This is actually to the previous Nelly post:

Actually, Natasaha, I feel Nelly and he doesn’t need to stop (well, maybe stop the ignorant stuff all together). I read your site. I like it a lot. I told all my sisters about it. They like it too. But, I actually feel Nelly. Not just Halle, but many of the people that grace the cover of Essence do some pretty disgraceful things. It’s just a shame that we’re pit against one another like that, as to where it’s okay from Halle or Beyonce, but not for Nelly or Ludacris, then we’re forced to recognize it and fight over it. And on the Halle tip…she’s gorgeous, she’s got style; we glorify her. But why is the epitome of Black beauty a half-white woman? Please respond (anyone), I’m interested in the answer to that last question.

The epitome of black beauty has nothing to do with the fact that she is half white. She does not resemble a white woman nor does she ever claim to be one. A black woman is a black woman, regardless of whether or not they are “full-blooded” black…however you want to phrase it. Halle is beautiful. period. Who do you suggest be the epitome of beauty for black women? Just curious.

Iliot, you may be color-blind, but America is not. Is is not unintentional the media play Halle Berry gets. Neither is it accidental that she is held as the epitome of beauty. Whites are subconsciously(hell, they know it) inferior and understand actual beauty but will not allow it come in the form of pure blackness. So they taint it and mix the features they like to “whiten” what they don’t, but secretly envy (evidence: plastic surgery, collagen). What you get is a mixed woman held as the quintessence of black, when she is not. Yes, she’s is absolutely gorgeous. But you have to understand her for what she is. Black (for lack of better word) is beautiful in whatever context or quantity. There is no one single woman (other than Eve, perhaps) who is the epitome of beauty for black women. We all are.

I have some choice words for you Ms. Harlem Chic: First, Erykah may dress and act out of sorts to you, but that’s her style and choice just like I’m sure that you have your own style. We do have choices in America and maybe she doesn’t want to look, sound and act like everyone else….that’s her freedom of choice! That’s why she is unique. Furthermore, she has tremendous talent. You can’t knock her live performances…she may not have the warddrobe or lighting that Beyaki and them have but her show is all the way live and when you leave you feel good!!!! For that fact alone, Ms. Badu should be celebrated! Stop hating on Ms. Badu!!!! She is way better than some of these commercialized, non-singing, back-stabbing Beyaki’s of today!!!!

iliot, Halle Berry is a beautiful woman but she is not the epitome of black beauty. For me anyway. I’ve always thought Lauryn Hill ( I know Miss Lauryn is going through some ish right now but she’s strong) is the epitome of black beauty with that dark skin, those thick lips and the nappy hair. I’ve always respected her decision not to straighten/relax or hair or wear a weave. I would hold her up as the epitome. But thats just me. Each to their own.

I am from England, but also very concerned as to how the media portrays black women. I do believe that people with parents from two different races should be considered black is incorrect. The media has created this notion, to please themselves, however we should remember that by glorifying women such as Halle as black, this further alienates true black women from being recognised for whom we truly are. Once mixed race people become black, then what do ‘black women’ become?? Society is leaning towards the notion that it is ok to be of mixed appearance, such as your Beyonce’s, Amerie’s etc and labelled as black because at the most basic levels they do not want pure black women to succeed. Whats even more worrying is the black man’s role in this very damaging trend, which has the potential to really create problems for the self esteem of our young black sisters. All responses will be appreciated.

I agree with a lot of what Ldn callin is saying. Young black girls have always endured this problem, except that it used to really be only white women on the covers of magazines. Even the powerful Oprah Winfrey mentioned wanting a smaller nose as a girl becaue of the images of the white standard of beauty that she was constantly bombarded with. Why are ethnic features always something that has to be repressed or beaten back? Why must black hair be straightened or dyed some strange shade of blonde? Why can’t the dark girl be the love interest in the music video (she’s usually cut off at the waist and reduced to shaking her *ss). The worst part is that black media is using its platform to perpetuate these images of whiteness, instead of shattering or challenging this out-of-date beauty standard. It’s like some kind of self-hatred.

Whoever it was that said that Beyonce, or “Beyaki” as they called her, can’t sing is a liar for real. Commercialized? Yes. Back-stabbing? Maybe. But not being able to sing? That is definitely NOT what it is. Why do we have to put down one artist in order to lift another artist up? Erykah is talented. Very talented. But it’s like people feel they have to prove how “real” they are by putting down the commercial music in favor of the Erykahs and the Lauryns.

As for the race issue, I don’t know if it’s still this way now, but in the past, in the US, for purposes of the census if you even had like 5% black in you, then you were considered black. So it’s not as though the media just concocted this plan to deny black women their due. It’s just the way this country is and has been. I think that Halle Berry is beautiful, but I don’t feel that she is the epitome of black beauty. I don’t think there should be an epitome of beauty in any race. This is why people have eating disorders and have plastic surgery. They’re trying to keep up with someone who is the epitome of beauty for their particular race. I agree with the person who said that we are all the epitome of black beauty. If there were a darker person with ethnic features that we considered the “epitome” of beauty, then there would be all these women out there trying to see how they could be darker, how they could have a bigger nose and fuller lips. Everything would just shift from trying to be light-skinned to trying to be dark-skinned. We should all just try to be the most beautiful people inside and out that we can be.
