You Decide: Is Robert Downey, Jr. Playing A Black Man Good Ish?

That's not a black actor in the middle.  It's Robert Downey, Jr.Here we go again...kinda.  A movie ABOUT A MOVIE originally written with a black character in mind will have a white man in black face portraying that black character to prove a point.  Confusing, I know.  Folks had a problem when Angelina portrayed a biracial woman for a true story, so it might just be a problem again.  Even though the situations are exactly the same. Ben Stiller's new movie, Tropic Thunder, is an action comedy about a screenplay he originally wrote with one of the Vietnam soldiers as a black man.  And now, Robert Downey, Jr. is playing that role in black face as he has dyed his skin once he found out (in the movie) the role was originally slated for a black man.   You decide.

Good ish...or foolywang material?

It's not a big deal. I think

It's not a big deal. I think the part is about a white guy going overboard when cast in a role that was originally for a black character. It's suppose to be funny. Let's not make something out of nothing.
April's picture
Of
Of course a real black guy couldn't play the part because he is playing a white guy playing a black guy. It's like a movie inside of a movie. Can anyone read? I think we black people like getting worked up and offended over nothing. Jeez.
Agreed. But lets be honest folk, even without this controversy... the movie looks dumb ass hell!!
CaliGirl's picture
I hope
I hope some of the posters are being facetious. The plot line is as plain as day, it's a movie about a movie, so no, a black actor shouldn't be playing the part of a white actor pretending to be black for a role.
exactly. How could a black man, act as a white man, pretending to be a black man. He would just be a black man, in black face, playing a black man? See what I mean? :)
CaliGirl's picture

I agree with Heiress, It's

I agree with Heiress, It's not like he's in actual "black face" with tar black paint on his face and huge pink lips, sayin' yizza boss...He's playing a realistic black man, just as eddie murphey did in Coming to American, just as the Wayans did in white chicks, just as Martin did on his tv show..and the list goes on and on....I don't think that all black people have tthe same mannerisms, attitudes, personalities, etc.. so I think that he could play this character, as long as he understands what this individual is about. We as black people have a difficult task..we have to be aware of negative portrayals, but at the same time, not come off as overly sensitive militant jerks...in this case...get over it people...it's just a character in a film...played by someone of the opposite race, nothing less, nothing more.

I don't see anything wrong with Robert Downey Jr. playing a blackman I had to do a double take to make sure Natasha wasn't Pranking us. the Wayan's brother Played White rich girls in White Chicks, and Eddie Murphy was Mr. Wong in Norbit,IF WE CAN DO IT THEY CAN DO IT!!!!!
Actually this information is a little off. The movie DOES have a black soldier in it. Robert Downey Jr.'s character is a white man who is so much a character actor, that he WANTS to play a black man in the movie they're shooting. There's another character named Jackson who IS black. It doesn't offend me, it's part of the joke. And based on the script, I think the joke is more on the white character than it is directed toward black people.
exactly.. pple haven't even read thru the whole thing and are catching feelings.. we're sometimes blinded by our racial sensitivity.. he's playing a character who WANTS to play a black actor in the movie.. wat is the producer supposed to do for that role? pick a "black actor" to stand in for robert downey junior? cmon now ppl
mr me three's picture

The outrage is funny.

The outrage is funny. Haven't you gotten it yet? Part if the joke is the fact that a white man is so pressed to get the part, he decided to pose as black. The joke is on HIM. But you know what else? Things like blackface and the word "n*gger" cannot hurt you unless you give it the power to. I refuse to allow this mess to bring me down. And I think Ben Stiller is a funny, thoughtful comedian, so I do not believe he or Robert Downey Jr. were trying to be offensive.

seriously, WTF is up with

seriously, WTF is up with these white actors painting themselves black? Unless this is something that is actually done in the movie for comedic effect, then its unacceptable. With all the available black talent that we have, y must crackhead RDJ portray a black character?!

Read the article people! And for the person I quoted above, have you seen Zoolander? I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH

I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HIM BEING BLACK FACED BECAUSE WE ALL SURE DID LAUGH OUR ASSES OFF WHEN WAYNAN BROTHERS DID WHITE CHICKS. ITS OK FOR BLACK PEOPLE TO PLAY WHITE, BUT WHEN A WHITE PERSON DOES IT WE HAVE A PROBLEM. NO ONE WAS COMPLAINING WHEN EDDIE MURRPHY PLAYED AN ASIAN PERSON IN NORBIT. PEOPLE NEED TO STOP READING INTO THINGS...IT IS NOT ABOUT HAVING ENOUGH BLACK ACTORS IN HOLLYWOOD, IT IS ABOUT COMEDY. THEY ARE TRYING TO POKE FUN AT THE BLACK RACE.

This is another case of us

This is another case of us overthinking. It is written in the script as a joke. Remember how Jamie Foxx used to go in 'white face' to play the TV reporter on his show. Even though I think some of Ben Stiller's movies are a little over the top I kinda understand what they are doing. BTW...comparing this to Obama...the two have nothing to do with each other.
shanshilly's picture

Yes there is a problem when

Yes there is a problem when anybody makes these kind of decisions especially when it's a white man's stupid choice. There are plenty of Black actors in Hollywood looking for roles and the fact that a white man developed a "Black" character already seems far fetched. What does Ben Stiller know about being a Black man in the first place??? Can't he just write about interesting characters and then find qualified talent to fill the roles? What an idiot! Why don't we have a Black man portray a Jewish/Irish Catholic like Ben and put make-up all over his face to prove the point. I think we can call the movie STINGY.
Jessica's picture

ACTUALLY, Robert Downey Jr,

ACTUALLY, Robert Downey Jr, is not playing a black man, be is playing a white actor (Kirk Lazarus) who played a black man in a war movie. It has nothing to do with the best man for the job. It is a spoof on that movie. If Ben stiller hired a Black actor to play a white actor who is playing a black man that would just be silly.
Karis Michelle's picture

Whether you know it, or not.

Whether you know it, or not. Rober Downey, Jr's great grandfather was a slave. He fought in the Civil War. So, the casting is not too far off.

To make a follow up comment

To make a follow up comment about White Chicks or Norbit all I can say is the ethnicity transformations in White Chicks were necessary because it was the crux of the film...The Black Characters had to become White girls to socialize in the white upper class, it was the gist of the entire screenplay. & As for Norbit we all know Eddie and Charlie wrote the screenplay and that he is known for playing multiple roles in costume. My point on this is that Eddie never gets other black actors to play Asians, Jewish people or anybody else he does it himself to show his versatility as an actor and display his character impersonations. Ben Stiller is not known for playing people of other ethnicites and neither is Robert Downey Jr. so this is really from left field if you ask me.

Like when Gene Wilder applied shoe polish to his face in the Silver Bullet with Richard Pryor.

Dressing up and acting as another race should either be right or wrong, period. And if people really feel that its wrong, it shouldnt be done at all, but since its not illegal there's nothing we can do about it. Sooo...as long as its not degrading or insulting to black people, people shouldnt cry foul when something like this happen, especially if we have been known to do it and laugh about it....
nobody got upset because we were all shocked at how fugly the wayans were playing white women! Look at the history a black

Look at the history a black face. Where did black-face originate? We might not know exactly where 'black-face' original origin, but my history book seems to have a pretty good idea of where it started. It was to construct a social image of African American men during the late 19th century. I DON'T FIND ANYTHING FUNNY ABOUT AT ALL. As far as MARLON AND SHAWN WAYANS in WHITE CHICKS, that is acceptable because I don't recall white females being depicted to society as something distasteful as African Americans men.

It is not that big of a deal to me. Suppose he was the best man for the job. We all preach that people should look beyond skin color yet we always want some special treatment because of skin color. He is an actor and he is acting as a black man ... that is the character he chose to portray ... what is the problem?
