Oh Really Chris Rock?

Photog: Gordon/Wireimage
Why not just keep the political ball rolling. Page Six is reporting that Chris Rock had jokes about why a black woman can’t be First Lady.
CHRIS Rock is worried about a Barack Obama presidency because, “I don’t think a black woman can be first lady of the United States. Yeah, I said it!” Rock cackles in his cover story in Rolling Stone. “A black woman can be president, no problem. First lady? Can’t do it. You know why? Because a black woman cannot play the background of a relation ship. Just imagine telling your black wife that you’re president? ‘Honey, I did it! I won! I’m the president.’ ‘No, we the president! And I want my girlfriends in the Cabinet! I want Kiki to be secretary of state! She can fight!’ ”
I know we were supposed to laugh, but…

I saw Chris Rock at Palm Springs do this bit for his NO APOLOGIES TOUR. It was funny as hell when he said. But when you take this joke out of the context it was in, of course its going to sound crazy.

I thought it was pretty funny. I know that if I was in Michelle’s Obama’s place I would probably be saying “No- WE won the presidency sweetie.” Especially considering the fact that Michelle is so well qualified herself - Princeton undergrad, and Harvard Law School. She’s a bad chick and Barack knows that. That’s why he wifed her up! Maybe she won’t throw her friends in the Cabinet, but I’m sure we would see them somewhere in the future political framework.

It’s just cooooooomedy! Rock is controversial and the fact that Obama’s wife is totally opposite then his comedic description that joke shouldn’t be taken literally.
Learn to discern… yeah I agree it’s out of context of the rest of his stand-up and tour name is “NO APOLOGIES”

Actually I’ve seen him perform this joke on his tour and it didn’t seem bad. When he said it almost all of us were laughing though.

Natasha, I went to his London concert at the Hammersmith Apolo (Jan 25th 2008), and he preformed this joke. At the time it was funny but in retrospect everyone was like, that concert was SHIT. the warm up act was better than him. I forgot who he was, but he’s known. He was really good.
I was really expecting some Never Scared type jokes. That would have made my night.
Now, is he really using all of the same jokes he performed in London in the states too? wow talk about recycling!

Shut up, Chris Rock. Let’s let Obama get in office first, before we give people another reason why we CAN’T be in office. You know that’s just one more thing to be taken out of context as gospel.

LMAO, i thought this was funny as shit
but when thinking of the forum he said it in (rolling stone magazine) know “white- eyes” would read it and totally misinterpret it, its not funny
but had he said it in a black publication or to a black audience, i dont think there was harm done— cuz i think we would have “gotten” it as a harmless joke

I’m not amused but I do find some honesty in his joke. Black women are very loyal and tend to give back to their people unlike Black men.

Lihten up guys, chris is a comedian. The brotha is just doing his job. And magazine articles are done months in advance so I am sure there was no mean intention behind the joke. If any candidate can take a joke, Obama is the one. Maybe he could even use a chuckle right now…

I agree - the quote was taken out of context. I also saw the No Apologies Tour, in Chicago though - Chris was killin it! He was amazing - before he talked about how amazing black women are, but shoot, watch out now if you tryna make her a first lady, lol. That was more of it. It’s not like he’s coming out saying Michele Obama wouldn’t handle hers. He also went on to say how fine he thinks she is, lol:)

I saw his show when he came to baltimore in Feb. He was very funny! alot of things that chris rocks said is always borderline, but sometimes right. he does not discriminate, he talks about what is on his mind, and what other people are thinking but afraid to say. You had to be there to hear the whole show, you can’t just laugh at the points you agree with and then have a straight face for the one’s you don’t. He was just talking about black women in general, not about obama’s wife directly, it’s comedy. If he would have said it two yrs ago or if he said it after the fact doesn’t matter. He didn’t put down Obama’s wife, after he said that, also said that the black woman would be the backbone of the president.

I dont think its funny..Im so sick of black women being put down by everyone. Its even more annoying when a black man does it. I get its suppopsed to be funny..but we are talking about the future first lady..if she can’t get any damm respect, my ass wont be either. I’m so sick of other women being put on some sort of pedestal. I belive all women are beautiful..but why is it that black women seem to be the dirty, nasty, ugly one. Latina’s are automatically sexy, aisans are submissive, whites are “so much fun”..Blacks are____ hoes and bitches. Im just over it and sick of laughing about it…lets change it.

I don’t think what Chris said is that bad and I have to admit, I chuckled at the end there too. If anything, I think we’re all wound a little too tightly about all this. Everybody is on edge! Maybe a little laughing might do us all some good. And honestly, it’s a compliment to black women. He’s saying no black woman is going to sit back lookin all weak, play second fiddle, and stand there like a blow-up doll (like our current First Lady). That’s why black women are all the hotness!
On Mar 21, 2008 | Reply | Quote

On Mar 21, 2008 | Reply | Quote
I must admit that I have not heard the entire routine but, I take issue with Rock’s “joke”. It has been my experience that most jokes are seventy percent truth - that’s what makes them funny. They are usually the truth exaggerated. So for a person that already believes that African-American women have control or attitude issues, this “joke” is right on point. But, that is simply not true. Not all black women have attitudes or are mouthy or loud. However, when you look at the caricatures of us in the mainstream media, this is what is portrayed to be the truth about black women. As far as I am concerned, Rock’s comment only works to perpetuate an already damaging and erroneous stereotype. And for those of you who think that it is funny - would you feel the same way if it were a non-African-American comedian making the “joke”?

Its a joke….damn. If u were sitting in the audience in one of shows…most ppl would of laugh…and dont’ say u wouldn’t cuz ya probably would. This what happens when ish gets taken out of context…. of course its gonna look worst than it is. one its only words ya see, and two, you didn’t hear how it was said. Man, folks is sensitive. I’ve seen comedians say far worst things, and the women are usually the laughing their behinds off.
I don’t see whats the biggie. We have a black man runing for prez, and all of a sudden folks wanna get all sensitive, and take offensive, when last year, ya would of lol….
Is the timing wrong either way. NO, its a joke.
On Mar 21, 2008 | Reply | Quote
@Nancy, it absolutely would not be funny if a non-black person told this joke. However, since Chris is Black, with a Black momma, grandmomma, wife, daughters, etc, etc, etc, oh and he was raised in BK, he may know a thing or two about black women. My interpretation of the joke was that black women do not sit in the back, on mute; we have a voice and opinions and no one (not even the President) is going to make us play the background. Just my opinion!

How insulting to the Obamas. It was already said by a female reporter months ago that Michelle emasculated her husband, and now Cris would make an insensitive comment as that. People are taking things very literal, and who knows how sensitive Michelle is, she maybe offended by that statement. We don’t know someone’s level of tolerance. Cris needs to understand that his wife is not Michelle. But, why was the joke even necessary to make in the first place?
And people really have Michelle wrong, she was asked in an interview, what would she do if Obama cheated? She said, well I guess I never had him. Now, I would a black woman, as Cris describe say something like that?
Black comedians get me, whenever they’re doing stand-up or t.v. interviews, they always say, oh no black folks don’t do this, or black women don’t or wouldn’t. I’m sick and tired of that stereotype that all black people are the same. It’s not true, and comedians need to stop acting like it’s funny.

It’s just comedy…but to the average swing voters, it could be threatening…it’s like black folk need to chill out and let the man run his race…there will be time to laugh and joke once someone is selected regardless. Chris Rock means well…his jokes are not only meant to make one laugh your organs out but make you cognitively evaluate the state of our society be it moral or immoral. Chris has created a lane of his own, some are afraid to travel. I’m not offended by his jokes…rather the timing needs to be curbed at this point…the media needs fodder to survive. I wasn’t going to comment till I saw his show last night in Atl. I will never again support a Chris Rock concert or movie. I don’t know if he is going through something with his wife but he made a habit of putting down black women through his entire show. Ever time he made offensive statements about black women & put white women on pedistol, I had to deal with to bleached blonds in front of me standing & clapping.
1-Chris said we hate white women cause we know that Rosie O’donnel can walk into any black club & pull a blk man before us, and she don’t even want a man…………WHITE WOMEN WERE ON THEIR FEET CLAPPING.
2-Chris said that we always accuse blk men of wanting a white women as soon ast the get a little money. He said, no we want them when we are broke but just could not afford them. WHITE WOMEN WERE ON THEIR FEET CLAPPING. I guess blk women are only good enough for broke brothas.
3-Then the joke about a blk woman being 1st Lady. When he said black women would not know their place, I had to deal with a bunch of white women on their feet clapping as this black man was putting us down.
Chris opening act was a 46yr old black man who was also bragging about his 20 something white girlfriend as if he finally achieved something. The tour should have been called the “I LOVE WHITE WOMEN TOUR.”
CHRIS ROCK DIDN’T SAY ONE POSITIVE THING ABOUT BLACK WOMEN DURING HIS ENTIRE SHOW.

his joke was disgusting and completely despicable. in a time when blacks are trying to make more progress and be seen as equal human beings, his jok,e was not funny. if anything, he should have talked about spitzer and his slut or how it would be to have a man taking the background to his wife. whether white or black, michelle is still a woman!
On Mar 25, 2008 | Reply | Quote
When I read this I thought it was wrong. But I attended his comedy show in which the joke was stated in Atlanta. I wasn’t offended at all. It was a freaking joke. I don’t go to comedy shows to get mad or nitpick at every comment to decide if it’s politically correct. His tour is called “No Apologies” for a reason. I actually laughed at the joke when he delivered it. Just posting the joke out of context is just as messed up as running Obama’s pastor’s comments over and over again…totally out of context.

I have been appalled and let me start here…
The lack of education and social awareness seen on this thread is so unfortunate. For the past 40 years, black people have been in the fron seat and at time even driving their own self-respect, diginity, upward mobility, love for oneself and each other etc etc…into the ditch.
Funny…please…I assume that Don Imus was funny last year when he made the joke about “nappy headed hoes”…it is techincally true isnt it…we have nappy hair (which we are taught to be ashamed of) and the world and our own men treat us and depict us as hoes.
Yes of course this will be too deep for a group of people who are shallow and ignorant as the ones on this thread.
Nancy and some of the others who saw this for what it is, Thank You.
One person said, “Some of y’all need to have a coke and a smile.” Sorry I am not a part of your house negro minstrel show. I am not going to smile in the face of disrespect.
One person said, “ho are you?oprah?laugh girl, laugh!!!its funny coz that the way we are…and who have you been hanging out wit-whites?”so much fun”?i dont think so”. Yeah if you hung around whites then you would not be laughing at such jokes. These stereotypes of us have been around for years and have been at the root of black subjugation. If some of you saw the disrespectful smears about Michelle Obama on predominately white sites then you would not be laughing. Chris Rock and them are all on the same page.
The very construction of black womanhood in American society has been dehumanizing and demonizing. The sad part is that blacks are now giving it life. You guys are embarssing your own negative stereotypes so why bother be up in arms when whites say anything about you…anyhting?
Marcus X, I am singling you out because of your name. I am assuming that you have been some how inspired by brother Malcolm. If so then I will let you know that Malcolm X tolerated no disrespect towards black women. He claimed that black women were always the most disrespect and unprotected. In order for a black man to be a man, he must protect his women like every other race of men. When you do not protect your women and treat them with respect, expect no one else to and expect not to be looked at as a real man.
Grace, girl!! I believe you 100%. That was why I stopped going to black minstrel…oops I meant black comendy shows. White audiences laughing at stereotypcial caricatures of blacks is an age old form of entertainment. It is also degrading and embarassing. Many comedians are decent but there are too many in the mix who just take things way to far. Black women are easy scapegoats for laughs. If you people on this thread only knew how damaging this was then you would not be laughing. However you are short sighted and ignorant. I am sorry that you had to experience that Grace. Please do not subject yourself to that again!! Empower yourself.
I can be very light hearted but I do not play with things like this because they just are not funny regardless of the time.
Chris Rock, you are the epitome of a COON!!
