He's been quoting this "harsh realities" point of view in his interviews ALOT lately. The way I see it is that, he's not living in the ghetto; he's flying first class; he has a lot of money and yet he thrives on all things NEGATIVE! I am no Rap History Major. I do enjoy Rap Music but I dont agree with 50 Cents comment and I think he was unprofessional. A.Keys may have said what she said and frankly it is her business. I think we should shed more light on the issue of gangster rap. I listened to a little rap in the 80's and the focus was on the social ills, ecomonic deprevation, humiliation , disrespect and disregard of the balck man and black woman. It centered mainly on trying to restore these ills and stressed that we (Black or people of African or whatever descent that was not caucacian) were living breathing human beings too and we also deserved good shelter, food and other social amenities that the people of other races were getting. I think things took a downward spiral in the late 90's. Rap became commercialised everyone was wearing heavy and expensive jewelry, disrespecting women and glorifying killing one another and "thugrey". Whaever happened to street battles PURE AND REAL STREET BATTLES. Where a grown man spoke his mind, from the social ills as mentioned above to him not being able to provide for his pregnant girlfrind to him trying to det his darn GED;s so he can give his family and baby a better life.. Lord help. I apologise if this offends anyone and also for the length as I realize this is a lengthy comment.

Some of you guys, like 50, need to get your facts straight. Alicia grew up in Hell's Kitchen, which was one of the hardest neighborhoods in NY in the 80's. So her realities are just as harsh, if not harsher, than his. I feel he needs to grow up, stop talking for another grown ass man, and read what she said when she clarified what she said because if he did that, he'd understand what she was trying to say and realize she was taking up for gangsta rap and its rappers--even though I don't think 50 is or ever was one--and placing the blame on the government for creating the conditions that the form came from and on the media for creating the term and making into something negative, therefore reinforcing in kids that is was rebellious and, in the children's minds, it became "cool" to mimick the rappers and in return our children were staying dumbed-down and in the hood when they should've been going to college, med school, law school, wall street, etc.

I think you are missing the point. You are right, rap is not the only genre with negative lyrics. But I think Ms. Keys was alluding to the fact that the media and govt look to oppress our people MENTALLY so they continually feed us with negative stereotypes of ourselves, and since rap is so influential, they make a point to highlight the negatives and expose the depravity of our music and our culture instead of highlighting the numerous positive images and music that we as a culture have including rap.
