Black women in music videos who are noticeably black, will always have a hard time in music videos due to factors; 1. The music industry is selling a product, and the majority of consumers out there are white teenagers. And they want to see themselves, thus feel a connection to the product. So, in order for little white teeny boppers to buy the product, they have to have a close to white model in the video, to draw their attention, and so the urban singer will appear less urban. Usher is more main stream by having this model. 2. We can raise these issues with mainstream media, but what about the media which solely targets us as a group. For example, in many rap songs, there is always reference to a woman's complexion. Ice Cube reference to, a big Yella with stelletos, or Too Short lyrics, or to the many rap videos in which the girls are always a certain complexion with a certain hair type. Even JonB, mentioned that he was told only to have light complexion in his videos , however in real life, his ex-wife and his current wife are dark complexioned. Why are black entertainers more likely to have a nonblack woman or a bi-racial black woman as a lead or in their videos than black women who are entertainers?
