Rihanna Talks About Fashion & Her Complexion

Here's the rest of the Rihanna's InStyle spread from the August issue hitting stands July 17th:

She rocks a Bill Blass blouse and Catherine Angiel necklace in this cover look.

One of my fave looks--she pairs a Valentino dress with Gucci leather booties. A Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci gold-plated necklace completes the look.

For a fall look--Rihanna sports a Chanel tweed vest, Helmut Lang jeans, and jewelry from Chanel and MCL by Matthew Campbell Laurenza.

A Rose Anne de Pampelonne necklace and Chrome Hearts belt add a modern touch to Rih Rih's feathery Fendi frock.

And here she rocks a hot pink Emanuel Ungaro silk-nylon jacket, BCBG Max Azria dress, and sexy Emanuel Ungaro eelskin heels. [In Style's August] issue is all about breaking entrenched rules of fashion and design. What are some rules you'd like to crush? "The idea of not wearing brown and black together seems so dated. The other day I wore a black T-shirt, black Nobody jeans, a brown leopard-print belt by Dolce & Gabbana, and brown Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, and it looked awesome. Also, the rule about not matching your makeup to your outfit. I do that onstage, matching red lipstick to a bright red jacket or neon-pink eye shadow to a pink jumpsuit. And I also love to mix prints. We've had the Meg, the Jennifer, and now people ask for the Rihanna at salons. Will you be switching it up again? "The first time I heard people were asking for the Rihanna, it was really flattering and maybe a little strange. It caught me by surprise, but now I feel it's a very cool thing. I don't feel the pressure to change it up again at all. I like it, as they like it." Can you talk about your style obsessions and how your look has evolved over the years? "It has evolved without my even noticing it. Lately I'm obsessed with Thierry Mugler... Grace Jones inspires me. She is the most iconic woman ever, in my eyes. She has extraordinary style and she's fearless. I love designer Martin Margiela; Kanye West told me about him. I also like Dsquared, Chloe, Zac Posen..." But you weren't always a fashion maven? Growing up in Barbados, you were a tomboy. "I wore my brother's clothes, dresses with sneakers, or no shoes at all. I would always get into trouble with my mom. She would say things to scare me like, 'You're going to get cut!' But I couldn't help it. I would climb trees, steal mangoes, catch birds--silly things that were fun to us at the time. My cousin and I were the only girls in the group. We would have to stand up for ourselves because the guys didn't want us around." You stood out in Barbados because of your light complexion. Do you remember having trouble fitting in at school? "Definitely. It made me angry. For the first six years of school, I would go home traumatized. The harassment continued to my very last day of elementary school. High school was better."   The rest of the Q/A when you read the rest... I read that your mom owns a boutique and your dad works at a garment factory--it seems you have the Rihanna fashion line already partly sewn up. "[Giggles] Well, I am working on that right now. It takes a lot of effort, and I want to be involved with every step of the process." What do you do for kicks in L.A.? "I don't go out much. I'm moving into a new four-bedroom home in Los Feliz that I'm excited about. Parts of it will be inspired by India. I love things like canopy beds, printed fabrics, and Spanish touches. Then I can stay at home and cook West Indian dishes like callaloo [stewed greens]. But I do want a sports car--as soon as I get my license." Who knew you were so domestic. Wait a minute. You're such a rebel. In the video for "Take a Bow," you drive a car. "I have my Barbadian license, just not my American one." How will you celebrate your 21st birthday? "Don't scare me! I have till February. I feel like I have so much more to accomplish before I'm 21. No party plans yet. Many showbiz types say, "Don't ever read your own press," but you do, even the online stuff." What's the kookiest thing you've read about yourself? "The Grammy thing--that I brought Jay-Z on stage and Beyonce was upset, which is so ridiculous. Or the idea that I've had breast implants--I don't even have much cleavage. It was just the dress! So yes, I read about myself and about everybody else in the gossip pages. It's comedy to me; I laugh about it." The tattoo behind your ear is a Pisces symbol--two fish swimming head to tail in a circle--which represents life after death. If possible, what would you be reincarnated as? "If I had to come back in another form, it would be as my dog, DJ. He gets the best treatment, all the attention in the world, and he's so adorable. Plus, he goes everywhere I can take him."

WANT YOUR OWN AVATAR? GET IT HERE.

Before like last winter,

Before like last winter, before she started taking that stuff to change her complexion ( i presume because no one can change skin tone like that in a year just from not being in the sun) she was not even what i would consider "light-skinned" She had a nice tan complexion, but i guess that didn't get her enough props in the black community so she had to do what she had to do to get our approval..SIGH...

And the fact that InStyle asked her about her complexion really irritates me. I mean come on...she wouldn't be on your cover if she wasn't lightskinned..nor would she be as famous as she is. We all know that. Let Rihanna, Beyonce and Alicia Keys be 3 shades darker and they'd be relegated solely to the covers of Essence and Ebony. Lets be real. But it's as if, by asking her about her complexion, they can show that light skinned black women "struggle" too and are discriminated against as equally, if not more so, than dark skinned black women. Puhleeeese. Gimme a break!!
Actually it is true, I live it. Dark Skin women assume that I'm stuck-up, and white people know that I am at least part black... therefor below them. So it sucks. I remember when I was a child my mother moved us to an all black neighborhood. I was beat up and picked on daily for my "permanent jerie curl" and "manilla folder" skin. It was horrible, and I still deal with it today.
And "Dark skin" people deal with it too..I still hear people (adults) making comments about people who have a deeper skin tone, at least your teasing was relegated to school age kids. Maybe in reality, you think you're stuck up so you assume others think the same about you. Have you ever asked these "dark skin" women if they think you are stuck up? I doubt if they even care about you..LOL

And lastly, smdh at the folks getting UPSET because she has the "nerve" to speak the truth about HER experience. If she was picked on because of her complexion as a child, what the hell is wrong with her speaking on it? It's HER experience... it happened to HER...not everybody else. She was not speaking for the entire island of Barabados, nor was she speaking for the enitire Caribbean, so who are any of you to say she's lying? People really scare me with their ignorance on these blogs.
THANK YOU!!!! Someone finally has some common sense on this blog....My parents are Caribbean, my mother was born with grey eyes and blonde hair until she was two and my father is dark-skinned. I had to argue with people all the time that my mother was really black and not a white woman, comments and insults all hurled by other Caribbean people. Like any Black person, we all come in a range of hues as a result of colonialism, but to dismiss Rhianna's or my personal experience as ignorant and/or a lie is ridiculous and ignorant. Yes, we belong to many groups based on gender, race, country, all of which have core norms and distinct factors, but this is in no way the sole indicator of how they will affect each of our individual experiences. C'mon people, get a clue!!!
Nobody's saying that Rihanna's individual experience is incorrect. What we (or maybe I should just speak for myself) --what I AM saying is that, as a famous person in the public eye, when you make statements about social/racial/political experiences you immediately become a spokesperson on that particular issue whether you like it or not. So you have to be careful about the kinds of comments you make in public, especially when you're making statements on highly controversial topics like skin color and the black community. and Especially when she's made these comments at least 3 times. The way it comes across is that light skin women in Barbados are constantly harrassed on a daily basis. If I was some white girl living in Connecticut reading this article, that would be the impression I'd get. Unfortunately, famous black people and other minorities will be seen as spokespeople for our communities, so its our responsibility to make sure we are using the RIGHT WORDS and if we do speak about our "individual experiences" we really emphasize that it is JUST AN INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE. Otherwise it will be taken out of context as experiences of all black people. That's just the way it is.

I think Rhianna is doing what

I think Rhianna is doing what she needs to do by capitalizing on her fame right now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. How many of you can say that you bought a house at 20? I mean seriously its not that deep, there is enough room in this industry for Alicia, Beyonce and Rhianna why does it have to be so segregated. No one is saying oh Fergie or Gwen can't be hot because Madonna has a lock on pop! Its so childish thats why as blacks we are so behind because everyone is so run 'gainst (Pardon me my Jamaican heritage just came out but basically it means enviable/ trying to be against someone) And as far as the complexion business goes, get over it she is what she is, everyone is so quick to say that if she wasn't that color she wouldnt be on the covers but can we please remember Lauryn Hill, when she was out she was on every friggin' cover of white and black publications. So get off this light and dark skinned thing and be realistic black is black no matter what, the less we build on it and make it a topic of discussion every single time the more its going to fester in the community. Just let it die and please keep in mind one of the biggest reasons that ethnicities like Jews are so successful is because they stick together, the might not all like each other but they damn sure do stick together, we need to stop airing our dirty laundry giving outside cultures fire to use against us to try and make us feel small. Be above it all and appear unshaken and untouchable and you will see a big difference in time. Now I'm done ranting:)
You know when I come here, it is not like I expect anyone to read a book or travel but my issue was with the question. Why the hell would the InStyle person assert that she stuck out because she was light-skinned? Barbados but as usual Rihanna says somethign strange or ignorant like the time when she said her mother raised her in a "black" way and that she is considered white. I am annoyed that she did not correct the Instyle interviewer in saying that the Caribbean has a plethora of people of different complexions and races. That just killed me. The interviewer was ignorant and Rihanna just went ahead and answered the question as if she was to stupid to pick up on the interviewer's ignorance. Some of you making a big deal about the comment here probably don't even own a passpost and are black American. The people who found her comment strange including my mother (who is extremely fair and from Barbados) know that she does not stick out there. That is the issue. I am not saying that she did not have problems if she did, I am saying that she is lying when she sais that she stuck out and I did not like that. It was not th first time I heard her say something like that. I find that many of the Caribbean stars like to change up there rhetoric and lie about their islands when they make it big. Many have done that. People in this country are ignorant about the Caribbean and you should correct them, educate them. My father is Indian. People here in the states act all shocked as if he is the only Indian!! When Trinidad has a greater population of Indians than blacks and a large population of mixed people like myself. There are many light skinned people, people of mixed race and people who are non-black in Barbados.
well said~

I hate it when celebrities

I hate it when celebrities act like they dress themselves. Girl, give your stylist some props! Stop acting like you know about fashion, please. Or hair, when she came out her hair was long, and looked funny. She got her some money, got a hair stylist and they gave her the look she has. I wish celebrities would just "keep it real."
Also,
Also, Rihanna's response to the complexion question annoyed me. She was "traumatized"?? I'm sure she got a lot of mean comments from dark skinned girls who were JEALOUS of her, and probably used SKIN LIGHTENERS on their own skin. But she always "forgets" to mention that she also received a lot of compliments about her skin. Everyone knows the Islands have a serious skin color complex (well, everywhere in the African diaspora--but it's more apparent in the Islands). Women with lighter skin are seen as beautiful, and women with darker skin are pitied, looked down on and forgotten. So dark skin girls/women often feel resentful to light skin women because they get all the attention and praise. Rihanna's constant claims about being harrassed, is not helping anything... PHEW! Ok, thats the last thing I'll say about that subject!
OMG, please go back to 1968 with your foolishness. How dare you say that dark-skinned women feel resentful towards lighter women. YOU ALL NEED TO SIT DOWN AND

YOU ALL NEED TO SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP. WHETHER U LIKE HER OR NOT, RIHANNAS IS FIRECE. AS FOR HER "TRAUMATIZING" EXPERIENCES... WHO CARES IF THEY ARE MADE UP OR NOT, THESE ARE HER "EXPERIENCES" AND SHE IS NOT SPEAKIN ON BEHALF OF THE WHOLE OF BARBADOS OR WHEREVER. SHE MAY NOT BE THE BEST SINGER, AND I PERSONALLY THINK SHE HAS NOTHING ON BEYONCE, BUT IGNORANT OR NOT, SHE MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT, SO WE CAN SIT HERE AND DEBATE ALL WE WANT OVER HER STYLE, HER ROOTS, HER BOO, HER HAIR, HER COMPLEXION (that has "changed" since she first came out), SHE HAS THE LAST LAUGH. SHE BOUGHT A HOUSE AT 20. CONGRATULATE HER.
Beyonce' had said once, that she use to read blogs...but she had stopped because the things she reads make her want to crawl under a rock. I guess Miss Thing cares what people has to say about her! Obviously Rihanna does not give a damn what you people say! Did you see what she said? She says reading blogs make her laugh...you have got to respect her character if nothing else. Love you Rih Rih! blows kisses
FALSE!!!!!! Beyonce has neva said anything about reading blogs. She just simply said she doesn't go on the internet like that because of the possibility of identity theft! stop making up lies to glorify this gimmick(rihanna)

Rihanna is my girl of course a fellow bajun... But the uh being traumatized for being lightskinned thing is a sttrrreeeeettcccchhh and hard to believe ... Maybe they were teasing her for being a tom-boy (way more likely in Barbados) anyhoo other than that I love this girl she is adorable and sometimes that's all the public needs!

The only reason I'm giving it to Cassie is because Cassie got a sugar daddy/pimp by the name of Puffy and the only talent she needs is laying on her back.... Rhianna actually has to work and spend money on studio time and she has to model and get contracts and what not... Cassie on the other hand can just ride Puffy's spaceship till it hits the top, then acts how many licky licks does it takes til she gets to shop....
Shouldn't that make Rihanna better than Cassie since Rihanna's trying to work instead of being a whore like Cassie?

So she was harrassed in

So she was harrassed in school, kids are cruel and tease all the time. Comments made in response to her interview w/Instyle in regards to her skin tone just sounded very ignorant.
