Robin Thicke Says VIBE Is Racist...Kinda

So Robin Thicke was interviewed recently and he gave his take on why VIBE came at him with some racistish bull about why he can't be on the cover of the mag: Q: What is it like trying to break the color line from the other side? Thicke: When I did a recent interview with Vibe magazine I asked, "Why can't I get the cover? This is a magazine I love. If there's one magazine that I'd want to be on the cover of, it's Vibe." Their response was they don't have white artists on the cover; that the only white artist they've had on the cover was Eminem. I guess if that's what it is, it is what it is. And I respect that because I live in a house with a black woman. I won't use the word "racism." I will say it's a tough -- but rewarding -- fight. I look at Mary J. Blige, somebody who has had only a few pop hits and yet has changed culture, generated new sounds and inspired leagues of artists. She's now a worldwide phenomenon. And it's because of what she stood for; she never gave up. She kept making great music, pouring her heart out to people. You can't always expect people to be as color-blind or open-minded as you want. What you can do is keep giving your heart and soul, like Bob Marley did. His music became so overwhelmingly loving; it was a relentless love in a sense. Keep beating them down with love and they can't stop you.

Vibe must not want to reach

Vibe must not want to reach their full sales potential or something! As sexy as he is, I'd buy that magazine just to see him! What's the deal with them tellin him that anyway? That's bull, he's a talented artist that does music which is considered black, so why not! I'm sorry, but Vibe is just hatin because they know they don't want black women lookin at this sexy ass white man and droolin! If it was the other way around and a white bitch that black men considered sexy was doin hip hop or r and b, they would've quickly laid out some space for her! She would've been booked to shoot with them even before she put out a first album. They would've made her career by putting her on the cover! Black bastards! He might as well call them racist! You can't tell me that if Ice T's bitch, Cocoa's nasty ass wanted the cover, she wouldn't get it!
mirelli's picture

Vibe is outta pocket

Vibe is outta pocket seriously. I'm sure there are plenty of ppl who'd love to see him on the cover, esp since he's underrated anyway. Give the ppl what they want since it's the ppl who buy the magazines in the first place!

Robin is the truth. Met him

Robin is the truth. Met him last year and he's one of the most genuine people I've come across. Black, white or green, talent deserves respect. I stopped buying Vibe years ago because I felt it was full of propaganda and I like facts. They probably couldnt handle his realness. Robin keep touching people's souls with your music.

That sucks! I never thought

That sucks! I never thought about reverse racism... Eminem is an a$$ though so I wouldn't care for him on any cover.

Robin, Is cool people, I know

Robin, Is cool people, I know him from back in the day over 15 yrs ago when he used to date my best friend, he was cool even then. We used to kick it at his home that summer.... met his dad and brother. Met some real legends hanging with him and if you knew him and his background you would know he’s the real deal and cool as h*ll.... He doesn’t deserve that kind of treatment.

OMG some of you folks are

OMG some of you folks are ridiculous to not see the reverse racism here! The fact that VIBE have only put <5 white folks on the cover and state Thicke can't purely b/c he is white is DISCRIMINATION. If you are minority (of color) or female, and have truly felt racism in your life, then you should know what one little bit of discrimination is, when they see or hear one. From what Blaq or Beeswax ignant dumb comments, you are just continuing to entertain your ignorant selves - thinking that you can continue to play the race card for yourself only. You can't pull out the race card whenever it suits you. Wake up racist black people! It's time to see that if you can't see racism against other races (other than black), you're only deluding yourselves. Racism happens everywhere, black against black, black against asians, asians against black, white against black, black against white, etc. Aside from that rant, Thicke did a nice job discussing a difficult issue he strongly believes in TACTFULLY - no pointing fingers, only lightly suggesting and leaving the reader to formulate their own opinion.

Good Grief! He is such a

Good Grief! He is such a phony! The only reason he even has a record out is because he's got major media connections in the family. Then he tried to fool the black public with some hooker he literally pulled in off the street while she was working as a prostitute in California, patton whatever. Does he take black people for fools? I heard all them songs were actually written for or by a Mexican Beauty Queen he met at a family function in Beverly Hills but he was afraid of the backlash of expressing his amor for a Hispanic aristocrat. Personally, I do not appreciate being lied to. The legacy of White lying and stealing from Blacks continues.
Beeswax's picture

It actually is kinda weird

It actually is kinda weird that he will drop mention of his black wife when that marriage is an obvious ploy concocted as a marketing tool in order to win open demographic favor. Well I guess that's what he's paying for- the ability to make reference to a black wife when he can't achieve the success he was hoping for, not in the hearts of the public anyway. Service with a smile! And knowing that, ahem, woman, I have to wonder for whom or by whom those songs were actually written for anyway? There is just no way Patton could inspire anything but disgust. Those unlucky enough to have met her, know exactly what I mean.
Kinda racist?'s picture

Oh he got dissed by Vibe?

Oh he got dissed by Vibe? Probably because he rollin with that awful hoe, patton whats-her-face. All the rumors about her, which I happen to know are fact, are now affecting his career. Anyway, all that is staged isn't it?

Robin Thicke, get a life. Why

Robin Thicke, get a life. Why won't 'White Mags" put us on the covers of their magazines. When we get equal treatment, then we can have this discussion again, until then... STFU & work on a good album.

Eminem STOLE hip hop and

Eminem STOLE hip hop and those ignorant ass suburban white punk kids think hes the greatest saviour of it or something. PLEASE..........FEMinmen only had two great albums, but his next two (The Eminem Show and Encore) was straight GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He turned into a fuckin clown, taking shots at Michael Jackson in his video (I remember that wackass song UGH!!!). EMINEM WOULD NEVER BE THE MILLION SELLING WORLDWIDE KNOWN STAR IF HE WAS BLACK. THAT IS A FACT!!!!!!!!!!!! Any REAL hip hop fan know his ass would NEVER EVER make a Top 100 Greatest MCs list, unless it was compiled by white magazines like Rolling Stone or something. And BTW Beastie Boys are white too and they were FAR SUPERIOR to this clown ass trailer trash lookin fool.

I enjoyed reading this interview with Robin Thicke. Ive always been a fan his. Im really shocked with Vibe magazine. After all theese years people are still seeing black and white. Why not put the man on the cover he is an excellent artist. Oh and side note Mary had wayyyyy more than a few pop hits.

That man is not whining or

That man is not whining or trying to play the race card. We are the ones making it bigger than what it really is. Why do you think this snippet is making the rounds? They wanted something to sensationalize the story. And like sheep, we fell for it. He's not saying he is entitled to anything. He saying he understands why they are hesitate because he knows what his wife goes through. Robin isn't going to denigrate her struggles just because he crossed a little resistance. And Mary J. has said herself that she has struggled to crossover onto the pop charts. Pop and R&B are two different genres of music. No one is downplaying Mary's accomplishments but Robin's right, the pop charts didn't help her at all. Now, the pop charts as an example is carrying Rihanna.
Anon's picture

Not only is it racist but its

Not only is it racist but its insulting to the intelligence of blacks. Nothing about Eminem's music was thought-provoking or inspiring. The only thing he did for Hip Hop was create a media flurry from white suburbia pointing right at the black community. Same as Uncle Luke. He basically made a joke of "black music" and we were laughing right along with him. Now, here comes a white male singing positive and relateable music and they won't put him on the cover? Goes to show how Vibe really feels about its black audience. When you have a lot of cooning and carrying-on they are all in support. Positivity doesn't sell covers I guess. I also feel a lot of this has to do with him wife being black. Which is sad, because they were HS sweethearts, both came from similar high-class backgrounds (his father is Alan Thicke of Growing Pains), and are both equally good-looking.

Umm my husband Justin

Umm my husband Justin Timberlake was on that cover and i know cuz i have the HUGE poster of it on my wall. I like Robin hes sexy and sooo talented but maybe the real reason VIBE hasnt put u on the cover is cuz... unlike justins 10 you've only had ONE hit. Unlike Justins 6 you've only won 1 Grammy for co-writing Ushers confessions. Unlike Justin you have not been on the biggest tour of the year. You have NOT had 4 billboard number 1 hot 100. Or TWO 8 million plus selling albums. You have not sold close to 700 000 thousand in a week. You have not broken a bunch of records, or worked with some of the worlds greatests (michael janet jackson, stevie wonder, timbaland, madonna snoop dogg) Basically Robin is a glorified one hit wonder and its gonna take more than riding off the success of Lost Without You, a two year old song... to land a cover of a magazine that is specifically for black superstars....

And blue eyed soul is nothing new. Not at all. Hall and Oats,Bogg Scaggs,Teena Marie,The Rightous Brothers there are many more. What happened to Jon B? I don't know why people think Robin,Justin and Joss are the first and only ones. I can name several others that knocked down doors in the 70's and 80's. And they rocked all the time in my home. He has to face the fact that he is new too... I don't think Vibe is racist. I don't know who is the head of the mag now, but when it started Quincy Jones ran it. And I know he isn't racist. Blaq - you ain't right. This

Blaq - you ain't right. This is called reverse racism if they don't put him on the cover just because he is white and this is the magazine for blacks. As long as black and white communities will be separated from each other there won't be understanding and yes, CHANGE in this country and world. That's why black models fight to be included in the mainstream magazines because world is not divided between black and white world, that is, a black model can and should be on the cover of such magazine because black models are also in this industry, the same with white artists who sing r&b or soul, etc.

It's funny how Robin had

It's funny how Robin had enough respect to not call this incident racism, but black ppl do? robin has a black wife and she's a model, he knows this is nothing compared to what she goes through trying to get the cover of a magazine. Vibe, Essence, Jet and Ebony, don't put white ppl on the cover because the point of creating these magazines were to give black ppl and alternative and some positive images. Out of all of the magazines out there this one is not going to have any affect on his career, Has his beautiful wife ever beeen on the cover of vogue, instyle, elle, or any major fashion mag? No, but he's on the cover of billboard and knows he has nothin' to cry about. Shit if he had put a white woman in his video instead of his wife he wouldn't even be considered R&B, he's be on tour with John Mayer and Justin Timberlake
blaq's picture

Mary has had a lot of R&B

Mary has had a lot of R&B hits but she has not crossed over like she should have onto the pop charts. The pop charts is almost exclusively white with a few, and I mean a few exceptions. Vibe is the same mag that told Kimona that she couldn't be on the cover because she was not an artist. She complained and got her way eventually. I don't see it as a big deal to him, he just gave an example to answer a question. He's in an interracial relationship, TRUST, he knows he gets more than this so you know he ain't trippin' off a mag cover.
