Ok. I wasn't going to comment but this is really some crazy shyt ya'll talking. It's 2009! People can date whoever they want to, for whatever reasons they want to, it's their life. They are the ones that will have to deal with the bullshit in the end. If they are dating outside of their race for society reasons, they will end soon and/or they will not be happy, guaranteed. It's different.........if I say 'I want a white man' just for the sake of having a white man, then in essence I am prejudice to my own kind, but if I meet someone who is not my race, and we just click and grow into something great, that's not a race thing, that's a relationship thing. Some black men say to themselves "I want a white gal!" that's prejudice, but if they honestly meet a non black person [white, korean, asian or other] and just happen to fall in love naturally, then that is understandable. We come in all shades and colors. What makes many of you think that the babies of these football players aren't by some light skinned chick? I'm just saying. I love that we have Barack and Michelle as an image you cannot avoid that is everywhere in the media as an example of what can be. At my job in corporate America, even white colleagues keep coming up to me mentioning how they think their image will be a great example for black men and women...all of this broadcast in our face daily for the world to see. They mention all the images of him taking kids to school and trick or treating and how his daughters look at him with such admiration and how affectionate he is with his wife. No longer can someone use the excuse that they never see these kind of parental and marital relationships in real life where they live. I also love that Michelle is polished and accomplished in her own right and she often speaks on his behalf and represents him at events and in interviews on her own when he is not available. I think it makes many men admire a woman like that and desire one for themselves. It is one thing to have an armpiece to stand in the background and make you look good but a woman that can represent you like Michelle Obama in public...that is a whole other thing. They are truly partners and I think that will do a lot towards inspiring other men to put more thought into their potential life partners. I've had male friends already mention how they want to find a 'Michelle type'. This is similar to how during the Cosby series many men desired a 'Claire type'. But this is not a fictional character so it is more powerful. Their images and their partnership is great for all men and women really. Back to athletes...my husband played football in college and mentioned how as many of these guys (before the NFL) go to majority white colleges in rural areas (U of Kentucky, U of Nebraska???)just as my own husband did they just continue what they got used to while there. He said the Beckys threw themselves on them on campus and pursued them with great aggressiveness and the guys did not resist much and for many that just turned into their preference over time. He said of the sistas that were attending the same college most of the sistas expected the football players to pursue them instead and put in effort and actually date them and court them and the guys avoided them for that more than anything just because they took more work. I have seen this in action at mixed events and it definitely plays a part in this. I have to give it to them for being more aggressive about what they want. I've been at parties with sistas standing with me admiring guys waiting for the guys to come to them (as many of us were raised) and while they admire Becky comes over and is passing her number and flirting and inviting him back to her place where her and 3 friends would love him to come over (this is a true story). Sometimes it is simply who is coming at them the hardest versus intentionally being prejudiced. That is what happened with my own lil brother who is now married to a 300 lb Becky with a kid by another brotha. It was hard to hate on him when that truly was all that was coming at him hard through his 20s and who was working with him and helping him out when he didn't have anything.
