Gabby Sidibe Speaks On Vanity Fair Slight+Serena Williams: Nail Tech

While Gabourey Sidibe (or any young Hollywooder who was not female, white, and over a size 2) was not featured on Vanity Fair's now controversial Young Hollywood cover, she says she's not really phased by it. Here's what Gabby said when asked at the Oscar nominee luncheon about being featured inside the mag, but not on the cover : "Was I satisfied? Yeah, well… I mean, I come from a world where I’m not on covers and I’m not in magazines at all. And so I was happy to be in the magazine. At first I thought, ‘Hmm, should I be there? Then I very quickly got over it. I think if I were a part of that shoot I would have felt a little left out anyway. I would have felt a little like… whether or not I should have been there. [It] doesn’t matter, because I wasn’t on it and I’m excited to be mentioned anywhere, and it doesn’t matter to me where I’m not mentioned.” Source: Access Hollywood Interesting. Serena Williams posted a Global grind blog yesterday talking about her love for mani/pedis. So much love that she's decided to become a nail tech: “No one likes getting their nails done more than I do. As a matter of fact I go every four days to get a manicure and every seven days for a pedicure. So, I had a brilliant idea to get certified to be a nail tech. "Besides the fact that I am coming out with a nail collection from a company called HairTech, I thought 'Serena, this is a no-brainer'. "The night before my class I made sure I had all my tools, books and gear organised. I went to the Hello Kitty store and bought plenty of containers as well as a backpack to keep my belongings. If I'm not the best, I sure do want to look like it." Loves her.

Gabby is not the most politically astute Black girl out there. I know how hard Black folks can be and I know she's spent a lifetime taking shit from people who look like her about her weight and complexion. Let's not front. All this attention is overwhelming I'm sure and I doubt she has any clue how to address a slight like this one. I like Gabby's Attitude. She has her insecurities like everybody else but it sounds like though magazines would love to articles on her struggling with her weight, looks, self-acceptance, standards of Hollywood and other stuff they keep trying to drag out of her she wants to be know as just an actress and for her talent. Not her sob story and I highly respect that. Still pissed with Vanity Fair though with their boring ass magazine.

I always feel like Gabby is Hollywood's charity case. Them trying to paint this picutre of the "everyday Obese princess" as confident in "being overweight" and comfortable for who and what she is, is NOT a good look. Although Kelly Clear has left the building, I just have to say that there is no way to know if a person is HEALTHY or not. She may not be FIT, but who are we to say she's not HEALTHY? If she was a size 8, would you question her HEALTH? Doubtful. So unless you are Gabby's doctor, please cut the shit about her being unhealthy. And if she's happy and confident in her skin, then respect that. It probably took her a long time to get to a point where she could be comfortable with who she is. I'm sure if her weight is/becomes detrimental to her health, THEN she will try and do something about it.

Good for Gaby for the + attitude. How great is it to not actually go looking for the perfect acting job, actually get it, and come out on top retaining a great attitude all the time? It's wonderful and extra wonderful for her. I'm wondering what school Serena went to to begin learning nail-tech procedures....wonder how her presence affected the curriculum? Wonder how much it cost her? Do you thing she got a Pell grant or loan for the class? Is she wearing her line of clothing to class or a uniform.....or is that her sister's gig? However, the fact of the matter is, LOOK at the type of people on that cover. How long have black women even BEEN in Vanity Fair? Exactly. Gabby needs to go somewhere, "good attitude" or not, she needs to go somewhere and get down to a healthy weight. She is morbidly obese.

As a former fatty (343 lbs.)eventually that weight will take a toll on your body. I have a young cousin who died from a heart attack at 35 leaving behind four children. I was healthy for a while too. Then I started to develop some serious health problems. It's not easy to lose weight by any means, which is why we put that bull out there about being satisfied with the way we are but deep down, it hurts that you have to deal with a weight problem that you seem to have no control over. It took three years but I shed half my weight and it is still a day to day struggle, but when you think of the alternative, I would think you would at least try. You don't have be stick thin. Just take some of the burden off of your heart. I know. I've been there.

PEOPLE, CAN WE PLEASE BE REAL.....The chances of her name being mention in black mags in 2yrs is slim to none. There are a ton of fine ass black actresses who don't get the roles & opportunities they deserve so what makes you think Gabby will. Gabby is huge at 26yrs old. Monique at her heaviest weight never appeared to be where Gabby is today. You can glam her up for pics but I saw what I saw on that red carpet & sitting there on the couch at the View making Sheri look very small. Precious was made over 3yrs ago. She knew a media storm was about to hit & she made no effort to lose weight. While she is running (not litterly) around smiling like she is fine with her weight, I will sit back & wait for the Star Jones effect to kick in. After Star lost the weight she talked about how she couldn't walk a block or a flight of stairs. Star spoke on how TRULY unhappy she was in her day to day life. I don't expect Gabby to be a size 2 but can she get into the teens. I don't even see understand how someone her size can sleep comfortable every night.

Although we should condemn Gaby on being sooo humble & thankful but Vanity Fair was scandalous they knew what they were doing if you look at how the cover was set up...how could you fit a black face/body in there?? only people i see sitting in that grassfield with those cream color dresses on was Zoe and Joy Bryant Rasario (off the top of my head)i'm sooo surprise and maybe naive that it's still like this...It's like the only movies we can have good roles in are by Tyler Perry, Spike Lee,and John Singleton unless they're about Black history, sports, or dancing(Unless your Will Smith he's what really got me hope)...which is cool bcuz black actors should want to mess with those directors but we should not be limited i thought we passed all that but this whole vanity fair thing seems like a set back if we let idk...probably just ranting...

Gabby is overweight. Her body is gross. She needs to keep hearing that, obesity is not something to play with. It's your life. I totally support Michelle Obama's program. It's time for obesity to be taken seriously, and it starts from the food garbage that we put in our body system. Let's start talking about food addiction, not just drug or sex. I love gabby and i agree with the health comments 100%..but it gets to the point where its like GET OVER IT ppl its her life watch yourself...being healthy is very important but it is her decision to do it an her body and her LIFE.. show of hands how many of you would have been doin as much appearances lookin as 'unhealthy' as you say she is? not many have that confidence thats why i love her i'm a size 4 an i wuld feel very uncomfortable under the hollywood microscope no matter how long i was going to be relevant.

What does her being "un healthy" have to do with her not being on the cover, we're not talking about "Womens Health Magazine". It was a fashion shoot disguised as a "New faces of Hollywood" issue. It's really about who they want to take pictures of. They should have just written "ALL YOU HOES ARE SCREWED" on the cover. It is basically a nice way of saying that these are the girls who they are going to send the paparazzi out to stalk anyways.
