Chrisette Michele: It's JUST Hair!

Chrisette Michele spoke about the real reasons she took it all off.  Her hair that is.  She found out that all the lacefront glueing and weaves and wigs don't make a singer or a black woman.  And she put her money where her hair is.

Read her statement when you read on...

Chrisette recently explained to VIBE:

“The turning point for me to shave my head was when I was out on tour. I had some pieces glued into my head because I didn’t want to dye my own hair, and the glued on piece would not come out of my head so I said I’m shaving my head because this is ridiculous. This does not make me Black. This does not make me a great singer; this makes me have a piece of hair stuck to my head and I was like, "I’m done, I can’t do this anymore."

My stylist once put a lace-front on me for a show that I did. I wanted to try it out. They take adhesive and put it around the edges of your hair and then they lay stocking material on top of that adhesive and then the rest of the stocking has hair attached to it and then this stocking material blends into your face and then they take makeup and put it on top of that stocking material and blend that into your face. I’m not sure if that’s healthy. I think you might get pimples and I don’t like pimples. I knew girls who shaved around their hairlines so that their lace fronts would lay better. I don’t know about that.”

She looks fabulous.  Work it out then Chrisette!

Black women are generally the

Black women are generally the only race of women who masks their natural hair texture. Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic, or Arab women aren't breaking doors down to get braided, kinky, wavy hair so WHY DO WE?? If our hair was meant to be silky straight wash and go THEN IT WOULD BE. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE F******* COFFEE! Challenge: Go to any beauty supply and observe how many other women, excluding black women, are asking for 8, 12, 14, 16, 18 in., etc. extensions. We have been subliminaly trained to despise our beauty in every shape form or fashion. It's not about doing what makes u happy all the time. Sometimes its about making a statement - I'm black, this is my skin, my hair, and I love it!

BEAUTIFUL!!!!! I love her music and style. I stopped wearing weaves 4 years ago and love MY hair. Lace front wigs are actually hilarious when done cheaply.

Seriously ppl, her hair will grow back...if she wants it to...but I'm happy for her its a big step to finally realize how much bs goes into weaves and relaxers when that's not ur hairs natural state...I see where she's coming from

I love it when a woman can be

I love it when a woman can be her own and not feel she has to follow the trends. I think she looks beautiful and has not lost her feminine touch at all. I once cut my hair a little longer than hers and wow did I receive a great response from men and women of all colors.

Beautiful!! Black Queen..I'm glad to see her wake up. Fake hair, fake nails, fake breast, fake ass, fake lips, fake eye color cannot make a real woman....just saying. If you want to hate on brothers for dating white/"other" races then black women need to stop trying (and failing) to look like them.

I will never understand why

I will never understand why so many people care about what OTHER people do with their hair. as long as it aint you hair how is it any of your business if they shave it off, wear a wig, weave, color w/e worry about ur own mess and stay out of every one's scalp
Anonymous's picture

I agree. You have to do what

I agree. You have to do what you are comfortable with. People have been manipulating their hair since the beginning of time. Some do take things to the extreme, but that's their business. Yes, stay out of folks scalp!

I wish black women would stop

I wish black women would stop with all the weaves. It's starting to look ridiculous. Why can't you love your natural hair. I'm not against perms but i hate fake hair. Your hairline will thank you also. A lot of weave wearer hairline is non existent. Free yourselves and stop being a slave to fake hair.
Tamera's picture

I agree that Black women are

I agree that Black women are afraid of their own beauty. I've worn my hair short for many years. Sometimes I like to count the women who wear weaves. It is a shame black women want to look like something their not. What really gets me, cheap weaves; when you can see the natural hair underneath. I wish black women would be proud of who they are and stop trying to be who they are not. I met someone who was inspired to take her weave out and go with a short hair cut. She absoutely loving her new hair, because one she can sleep with comfort, when it get hot she won't be itching her head, like she has lice.

Why is it that when women in

Why is it that when women in the industry cut their hair they always come with some story about "this is not what makes me" blah, blah, blah... what about the TON of make up caked on your face? Like come on, I'm so over why people cut their hair, grow their hair, weave their hair, braid their hair, dread their hair, perm their hair, hot comb their hair, wig it out. Stop justifying why you do these things to YOUR hair. At the end of the day it's your hair. And if we're on this "this doesn't make me" tip, then why the designer labels, why the fancy restaurants, why the luxury cars, why the fake nails ( or funky designs on nails)... Give me a break...
YadaYadaYada's picture

OMG! I totally agree with

OMG! I totally agree with you...She probably HAD to cut her hair off because it was damaged. People also have to realize that celebrities live VERY VERY fast paced and ever changing lives. Do you honestly think they leave the same hairstyle in for more than a couple days. That wrecks HAVOC on your hair. People can wear their hair anyway they want to nobody should really care. Some people like to wear fake hair to see what another style would look like without compromising their own hair. I know girls with hair down their backs that wear wigs...WHO CARES.. For celebrities however...they have to come up with some excuse to justify an action for the public. She wasn't just gonna come out and say her hair was damaged! Lets be real.
Anonymous's picture

Whether it was damaged or was

Whether it was damaged or was a bad weave job, that's what it takes for many of us to realize that what we have done to our hair and bodies.

I shaved my head my senior

I shaved my head my senior year in high school (2002) and ppl thought I had lost my mind or something. It was crazy!!! Everywhere I went ppl would ask y did i do it and would simply reply that "i wanted to". And ladies don't be afraid if men are going to check for you...they will. I had more guys approach me (the ones with brains and a sense of themselves as oppose to these "wanna be men") A man who doesnt like a woman simply because she doesnt have long, flowing weave or just long hair is a damn fool. That was the most liberating time of my life. P.S. and going to the barbershop is a great place to find men and network. I met my boyfriend of 7 yrs. there and I had a shaved head. So ladies be like Nike and "JUST DO IT"

@ yada & dee... i can agree

@ yada & dee... i can agree to a certain extent, but i think they feel they must make a verbal statement bc people WILL ask about it. the world is so concerned about women's hair. if a woman steps out of line & say...oh- i don't know- SHAVES HER HEAD, people make a big deal. sometimes they feel they have no choice but to reply. i also don't think the industry will let them get around the makeup. photographers probably wouldn't even take their photos. :(
TakeThyRod's picture

Totally agree...just cut your

Totally agree...just cut your hair and stop with the press releases of why you did it. Ok lace fronts didn't work for you....but not sure why this is news everytime someone goes "natural" or whatever. Just like it is not news if someone natural got a weave.
Dee's picture

What does any of the stuff

What does any of the stuff have to do with putting a potentially dangerous chemical on your head? You seem to have missed the whole point...Just because one doesnt wan't to wear weave doesnt mean they don't like nice things.
Sassy lady's picture

When did weave become

When did weave become dangerious? It's fake hair and thread. Where is the chemicial? Now if you're talking about glue and perms that different. But then again who makes home made shampoos? Do you? The point that I was trying to get across was that, it's okay to go natural but there's nothing wrong with wearing hair that isn't yours. When did it become a problem? And why should it be a problem if you know who you are, if you know your own self worth. Woman need to stop justifying why they do things. Just like it's annoying when a female whenever she gets a chance justifies why she wears weave "girl, you know my hair be breaking, just trying to make it grow back". WHO CARES... Why do you care what people think of your shaved head, I thought it was something you did for yourself. That's like buying a gift and saying "listen, it ain't what I really wanted to get you, but don't worry I got you next pay check" WTF. come on... Keep it moving. Black is beautiful all shades, size, EVERYTHING. and if you're going to promote this whole "natural" look might as well be a natural person, it only makes sense.

I agree with Chrisette

I agree with Chrisette Michele - it really is just hair - and it will grow back. She looks fabulous... when you have short hair, there are really zero bad hair days. Rock your look and keep on singing... There are so many folks I wish would have this healthy an attitude about their hair [entertainment industry as well as people in everyday walks of life]. Peace.

She looks amazing! Black & Beautiful without all those damn wigs we have to see B, Ashanti, Kelly, Eve & All the rest of those Black Stars in! Amber Rose & couple other black stars (Nina, Halley, Toni etc) started it but of course the media hates on Amber! Chrisette short crop cut looks cute too. & No I didnt mention Solange cause I'm sick of her & her sister too, LOL.
Mi Mi's picture

@MiMi You're sick of them?

@MiMi You're sick of them? But why? Why does it upset YOU so much what another woman does to HER HAIR? You need a life. Maybe you shouldn't look at them if it causes you so much distress. Where do you insecure women come from? My natural friends wear all sorts of styles, weaves, braids blowouts. My best friend chopped her locs in November, she now has a relaxer and her hair has now already grown into a chin length bob. She says she'll probably be natural by the summer because she's not really feelin the maintenance of relaxed hair. After seeing this post I had to ask her what she really feels about women who chemically treat their hair or wear weaves. She was confused as to what I meant. She says she has no feeling about it either way. Stop this divisive behavior. It's hard enough for black women in America as it is. Why be divided on an issue as simple as hair.....

I'm not too sure how i feel

I'm not too sure how i feel about Ms. Michele cutting all her hair off. I think the mohawk style she had ealier in the year represented her image the best. Your hair doesn't define your music at the end of the day but your music does have to represent ya image. DO ya thing though...Women go thorugh hell to get their hari straight. At least, you don't have to put up with that anymore
