Wacka Flocka Explains The Dumbed-Down "Music" Of Today

Ever wondered why most music these days just sounds like random non-words and sounds thrown together and put over a beat?  Well...you're not alone.  Many folks, including myself, are baffled over this dumbed-down music takeover.  But here's the possible answer.  Wacka Flocka Flame...the latest culprit in creating foolish ass (but annoyingly catchy) songs...explains why he goes this route, as opposed to really rapping.

The lazy mentality of folks these days is mind boggling.  But it explains so much....

Sadly, this dude speaks how he raps. Which means we have provided you with the hearing impaired closed captioned highlights of what was said:

Wacka Flocka Flame was interviewed by The Source TV. He talks about how he feels about his music and he addresses the criticism about it. He says that he is a party starter, just like the style of Kid ‘n’ Play.  Also, his definition of success is selling records to gold status (500,000). He believes in staying in his own lane by making his own way in the music industry, because he knows he will get bodied in the real rap lane:

* “I’m like ‘Kid ‘n’ Play’. I come to get your party started. I don’t come to make you laugh. That’s what the rappers are for. I’m a party starter. That’s it! If the party is dead, I’m going to come hype it up and then leave.”

* “I stay natural. I’m a mood record. Whatever mood I’m in then that’s what I rap about.”

* “I literally have too much sh** to do. Seriously! I got a CEO who’s locked up (interview onviously done before Gucci was released), I got a label to hold down. I got bills, brothers, families, friends that need me.”

* “You can look lame as hell because when you flex like you can rap, they are going to put your ass on the spot. Radio stations or anywhere. Any freestyle you do. You are going to be looking lame. When you know I don’t have any lyrics, you ain’t even going to ask me for no freestyle. It is what it is! Who didn’t grow up listening to punch lines? C’mon now! Why would I knock you.”

* “I think if I do a song like ‘Oh, Let’s Do It’ then I start rappin’ hard on punch lines, I’ma fade away because it’s niggas super harder than me. Now, I’m gonna fall back in their lane? When I can go and make me my own lane? That’s like saying, I can take the short cut to work instead of the highway because there’s just jammed up traffic and it’s during rush hour. Why would I go through rush hour when I can go the back way and save 10 minutes out of the day?”

* “I can’t even listen to my music because I’m going to be hype all day. I want to listen to see if you can really rap so I can chill in the car and ride to. That’s my whole outlook on it. If you drop an album and that sh** don’t go gold then you failed. That’s a failure. Like 200 copies is not no damn success. I50 is not success. But gold, now that’s success. Platinum is excellent. That’s how I look at it.”

Sigh.

Wow! That's real talk. We use to have ALL that. Which is why people are always screamin' we miss Lauryn Hill and 90's R&B. "Artists" just seem to be in the business to "make money." And they should get there money up, but the other side of that should be to make music that is timeless, that we'll want to listen to decades from now.

There's nothing wrong with

There's nothing wrong with party music, it has it's place. But it becomes a problem when the MAJORITY of music is geared only being "party music". There's hardly any conscience rappers out there anymore, and the ones that are out there get absolutely no radio play. There is a complete imbalance in music today and people who listen to all genres of music notice the shift. I remember the days of listening to Stretch Armstrong and Bobito on Hot97 here in NY where on Sunday nights from 9pm to 2am, they would play nothing but underground/non-commercial artists, but shows like that are gone. You know there's a problem when groups like Little Brother don't sell and they have to part ways.

Wow this generation. It's as if they believe they should be put on only because they ask. I have people like this that work with me. They don't do anything at work, call in, have no educational background but want to be promoted to Manager by their 2nd month on the job. If you can't rap (he admits this) why are you rapping? I remember when hip hop had checks and balances. If you weren't co-signed by another already established rapper no one was checking for you. Now it's a free for all. I would much rather hear someone would a good flow rap ghost writer lyrics than listen to these idiots mutter on the mic.

I actually have two songs by Waka Flocka on my computer and while this guy was totally incomprehensible in this interview I do not look to his music for personal guidance, just for loud ridiculous music... Why do you feel the need to critique him though? I don't look up videos on youtube of Jerry Springer and comment about how stupid the viewers are... I know that some artist or actor or tv show or w/e will need to inevitably appeal to the least intelligent denomination of audience... Oh ye shout out all my niccuhs on da block makin dat gwap - trap or die - tdot we ride on all you fck azz ybf lame asses

The basis of his interview

The basis of his interview was smart. His income proves the intelligence behind his musical ventures. Most of the people on this page talking about him which they had his money. Stop hating on him because he found a legal way to support himself.

I don't think the people that are commenting about his lack of speech or his obvious lack of education is completely wrong. I tried so hard to understand the words that were coming out of his month and I'm just not that dumb. His money has nothing to do with his lack of talent or his inability to speak correctly. This is sad and I pity the children who think this is cool, because they may want to speak this way without understanding how stupid it looks and sounds.

Waka can't speak well but I

Waka can't speak well but I understand what he is saying after translation. It makes since. He's paying the bills any way he can. It's not the artists fault if PEOPLE listen and buy the music, pay for shows, etc. If people are really tired of and all that concerned about "garbage" being played on the radio, they should complain to the radio stations and start petitions because in the end they are about making money. If wack-ass-rapping stops being requested and bringing in the money, they'll play Common, The Roots, Talib, etc. :l [side-bar] This Minaj chick can't get a break even under an Waka Flacka interview. In regards to her rapping, Missy rapped about some bullsh*t too, with all the crazy lyrics and videos to go along. "This the kinda beat that go bha ta ta / Ra ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta Sex me so good I say blah blah blah" -Missy Elliot WTF? Yet she is still successful in the game. I don't think that's any different than the " rah ha ha" sh*t that "Minaj" raps about. I hate hypocrites, that's all.

He's essentially admitting

He's essentially admitting to the reasons why so many hip hip artists are really just a drop in the bucket. The Music company is using you to push the agenda of formula/gimmicks/same ole same ole and when they're done they'll get the next thirsty nigga with a rhyme book and a dream to keep the audio safari going. As for Kid and Play he wishes he were that successful.

Now, reevaluate the statement

Now, reevaluate the statement from Nas, "Hip Hop Is Dead"!! What is your answer? Its all about how much money you can make. What about the music, the lyrics, the skill to creature? I guess all that matters is that it has a hype beat that we can dance to! Right? I miss the old days!!! That feel good music, music that had a message behind it. A message other than how much money you have, how many girls you have, how much drugs you sell. All the negative stuff. We need more Commons, Nas, Mos Def, Talib, Outkast, I can even put Bobby Ray on that list. Where in the hell is Kanye? Who else???

Normally I would spew a lot

Normally I would spew a lot of hate towards dude cause the ratio to normal black kids just living their life reading and preparing for college to the 14 year-olds pushing strollers w/2 kids a an STD is just too much. They big, they fat and they ugly and they get on my damn nerves. But back to the subject. I blame him for this madness but that's dumb because this stuff been going on forever (social services for the not-needy) I guess it is that their is no balance to the music industry. He has every right to make his music, however when that is all I hear when I know there are young men and women who can rap about mortgages and how to get good insurance rates over a smooth beat...I get perturbed.

And at least he knows what he

And at least he knows what he is doing. I just don't understand why men like him HAVE to resort to rap. What happened to owning your own construction company or law school. As much as I hate these thugs I'll never say that they don't have the capacity to learn and be brilliant at something other than rapping about strippers, T&A, cars, sex & money. I would just think we progressed more than that.

"Some commenters believe the

"Some commenters believe the rapper is "lazy" because he has decided no to challenge the rhyming prowess of better more experienced lyricists. I beg to differ. I think this rapper is just a good business man. His subgenre is party music. Hes not Nas, JayZ, or Lupe and he makes no claim to be. He understands his strengths and weaknesses vis a vis the threats and opportunities in the hip-hop market and hes planted his flag appropriately. Its plain corporate strategy. he can move more units at a lower personal cost per unit by displaying his own talents instead of wasting time and resources and accepting incredible risk to compete in a space where success is unlikely. You call him lazy...I call him and his contemporaries the Southwest Airlines of Hip Hop. I admit I admire Southwest; I fly SWA almost exclusively." I requoted this because yall need to read this again... I actually respect Wacka more after this interview than before... Because he's true to who he is... He knows his strengths and weaknesses and uses that to create hype ass music... And even HE realizes that his music has a specific place and purpose, HE can't even listen to it all the time... But when you want music that gets you hype, he is there... and that shit is fire. People who don't even like him per se will say that his songs are "catchy" that is because for his subgenre ("Party Music") it's actually really good... The problem is people are trying to compare apples to oranges when it comes to him vs. lyricist... Ain't nothing wrong w/ wanting to get hype... Everything has it's place.

Excellent points. I think the

Excellent points. I think the frustration sets in with WFF and artists like him, when the "party music" sub-genre he represents becomes the dominant driving force in (and - in the view of the mainstream - the ONLY voice of) hip-hop. My first exposure to hip-hop was the Wildstyle soundtrack, so I've grown up watching the many phases of the music over decades. There have always been multiple personalities to the music (party records, conscious songs, stories)...but as I recall, either the whole genre was ignored as a bastard music form (ex: "No-Rap workdays" on radio)...or as its popularity grew...all facets of hip-hop were on display. Kid-N-Play, KRS-One, Public Enemy, Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince...all represented. I'm 30+ and my generation isn't in the clubs trynna tear da b*tch down every weekend, or blowing up radio station request lines to hear what was playing in the club...so to the squeaky wheel, let the grease flow. The day hip-hop fans say "we want meaningful lyrics in our music to take center stage...even in the party records!" is the day hip-hop as I knew it/know it will be better represented. (As I recall, ATCQ/Leaders of the New School "Scenario" had us jumping around like fools in the 90's...and the lyrical flows were siiick...I'm just sayin'.) Until then, take comfort in knowing that the most ACTIVE fan base in 2010 hip hop wants to JERK, wear pants at their knees, and idolize lime wigs with a Turrets Syndrome flow. WFF is doing what he has to do to navigate the 2010 hip-hop business model. I'm not a fan, but I understand. We can't hate the player in this instance, we have to hate the game. Or better yet...work to change the game...ACTIVELY SUPPORT (what you believe to be) REAL HIP HOP.
