I working in higher education; so, education is very important to me; and I advocate for the youth to stay in school. I normally don't comment on this site but this Nene interview is a hot mess. First, when did getting a GED become the standard. I hate to sound judgmental but I think in America people don't value education. I'm Nigerian and I have two masters degree because since I was a little girl my parents instilled the value of education in me. Nene needs some speech lessons if she wants a career in broadcasting because she talks so ghetto.

Im so tired of you Nigerian Africans who learn how to say "hot mess" then talk about ghetto talk - always coming down on someone. Education is the top priority !!!! agreed. In America, you have to earn a high school education or GED in its place, to attend college. So, anyone who doesnt have a HS Diploma, but strives for higher education, must get a GED. This is the step one in the process of a college degree and on to grad school. And so, the GED isnt the "standard" but the catalyst for excellence in continued education. American people value education very much so, or you wouldnt have the great educational choies you have as an "international" student here in America, when Im sure you have plenty of these options in Nigerian culture.

Graduating from College is a big accomplishment. In today's society, most jobs will NOT hire you with just a High School education. With the mentality of just getting a HS diploma or GED and becoming complacent is just plan short-changing yourself. I work for a college university and the USA used to be #1 with education - now we aren't even close. China and India and cranking out College graduates left and right. That's why they get the better jobs. As the Air Force motto, says, "Aim high!" and don't short-change yourself. You're better than that! ;-D

I agree with the original poster. If we keep acting like it's the biggest accomplishment nowadays just because of 'todays youth generation' then yes, we will never see the light. We need to have higher expectations from our youth and they will strive to be better. I don't understand why there has to be a handful of black people in sea of light colored faces when we talk about post doctural degrees, etc.
