WTF? Melyssa Ford Pops OFF On ESSENCE Magazine

Many people have been upset these last few months with ESSENCE because the magazine hired a white fashion editor.  Others believe the magazine is out of touch with black women as a whole.  Now Melyssa Ford is upset at the magazine because of their recent cover and their "subtle" messages to black women.  Find out her profanity laced issue when you read on...

Video vixen godmother/actress/model Melyssa did an interview with VIBE and voiced her opinion about the current cover of Essence Magazine. The cover features Blair Underwood, Boris Kodjoe, and Lance Gross and the caption says "How To Keep Black Men Happy And Faithful":

Melyssa : "Right now Essence has on the cover, three of the most gorgeous black men ever created on the face of this fucking Earth. They have Blair Underwood who has always done it for me, Boris Kodjoe whose definition in the dictionary is fine, and then they got Lance Gross—chocolatey loveliness. And you know what they fucking have the nerve to have as the fucking title of the cover story? “How To Keep Black Men Happy and Faithful.” And faithful! How dare you?! It makes me fucking sick. [It’s like saying] ‘Women take note—how to keep your black men healthy and keep from straying from you ‘cause it’s your fault.’ And black women wrote this to their fucking counterparts. As if to say, ‘If he strays, it’s your fucking fault. You didn’t cook enough. You didn’t blow him enough. You didn’t fuck him enough. You didn’t do enough to keep your fucking man healthy or faithful.’ O-M-fucking-G! "

Melyssa: "There are times where I’m surprised at the audacity that they fucking have to put something like that on the cover, but they’re regarded as the soul sista’s bible. They accept a fucking elitist attitude on who they’ll have on the cover and who they won’t? Please. Who was on the cover last month? They were toasting to women above the age of 40, and how beautiful they look, but Naomi’s on the cover? Okay, yes. Granted, Miss Naomi walks a catwalk, and she’s still killing 16-year-old and 20-year-old girls. Yes, but she has serious anger management issues and an overwhelming sense of entitlement, and she is engaged in fucking illegal activity that’s directly related to the blood diamond industry in Africa. And you’re putting her on a pedestal? Is that what you’re doing? But you won’t cover somebody like me because I based the earlier part of my career on my sexuality? My moral compass hasn’t been shifted off too much. My values are pretty good considering the causes that I believe in and places I’ve volunteered my time and given my money to, but you don’t feel the need to ever cover any single part of my career. You don’t even acknowledge that I even fucking exist. But this is what you cover and this is the thing you say? I think it’s hypocrisy."

Well *snaps* in a E (for Essence) formation.  She did raise a few good points I have to admit.  Even though she should have gotten to the real point and just asked to be on the cover like she knows she wanted to.

I kid.  Kinda.  Thoughts?

Oh Melyssa please shut up!

Oh Melyssa please shut up! You are in no position to criticize any magazine. You have been a disservice to black women the whole time with all your overblown sexuality in videos. You have done far more harm to our image than anything that Essence could print.

While I understand what

While I understand what Melyssa was trying to say her point is moot. The funniest part of her interview is when she acknowledges she's been a video ho most of her career and then she says her moral compass isn't "off too much." LOL what in the world? That's like saying yes he's dead but I only stabbed him a little. Broad puleeeze! LOL I needed this laugh this morning.

I feel her on the Black Men

I feel her on the Black Men part... now as far as her being on the cover or being talked about.................**crickets** ............Chick what have you done besides have a nice body?? Please GET OVER YOURSELF!!!!!!! THANKS

Melissa, leave Naomi out of

Melissa, leave Naomi out of this. Where did you see her getting involved in criminal activity? Do you even know the whole story behind the supposed 'blood diamond?' She may have anger issues alright but who in this world is perfect? What have you done that makes you deserve an Essence cover. Why would you even put your name in the same sentence as Naomi?
Monica's picture

I agree with a small

I agree with a small percentage of what she said BUT she lost me when she started going off about not being in the magazine. Sooooo.....she doesn't want them to give advice on how to make a man happy but you want them to give a road map on how to be a video "vixen"/industry jump off? Yeah that makes a ton of sense.
RedGirl's picture

So unattractive and

So unattractive and distracting when a man (or woman) can't convey a thought or express themselves without cursing. Secondly, is Melissa on drugs? Sweetie, what reason would they have to put you on the cover? Have a slice of humble pie honey, do you and stop worrying about who is or isn't featuring you in any media outlet for that matter. You're good right? So go sit down. Yes, she made some valid points...all to get some shine for another 15 minutes. Ridic.

#1 - Melyssa do you take the

#1 - Melyssa do you take the chance and read the articles. Last month issue was not about women over 40. It was about 40 women (Age of the women were not taken into account) who were fierce and fabulous. Second it is a matter of freedom of speech that you can write and say what you want. Melyssa you mad huh? Then dont renew your subscription.

Melyssa's tired azz loves to

Melyssa's tired azz loves to come out like what her air-headed azz thinks matters. She continues to act like she is a real actress when she has done nothing but be in videos and take pictures with her azz to the camera. I mean this broad really expect Essence to put her on the cover versus a top-model like Naomi? The day I see that then I will make sure I never support Essence again because they will really be hitting a new low.

Melissa Ford just made

Melissa Ford just made herself look dumber. Stick to vulgar music videos instead of trying to be the voice of reason for black women. Women like her aka prostitutes are the reason that black magazines have to work OT to prove to the world that black women are educated, fabulous, articulate, lady-like and not just potty mouthed video vixens who are only good for opening wide. Does Melissa Ford think all the money/gifts she got from rappers from turning tricks on video sets was legal?! Man please. Half of these rappers are drug dealers bc unless you're selling records like Jay-Z, you're not making enough honest $$ to support that flashy ass lifestyle. Naomi can't help where a gift came from. And let's not forget that people always provoke rich people so they can get money. Most rich celebrities have to keep lawyers on payroll bc of bum ass people trying to set them up to get a quick buck. But Melissa Ford drives a Honda Accord lol so she should stay in her league. She can't touch Naomi
Lisa's picture

she has a few points but in

she has a few points but in the end its going to be chalked up to "she's just mad she didnt get a cover" Essence is elitist in some ways, professional Black women, married, mothers relatively conventional. If they did an article on "video vixens" it'd probably be an angle about how they use their bodies instead of their minds to get ahead in life, such a shame. oh well

Well at least the article

Well at least the article would be true.

And therein lies the issue I

And therein lies the issue I have with Melyssa's beef with Essence...*Jadakiss' voice* "you just wanna be seen...knock yourself out!" I was on Vibe's website yesterday reading the feature on her and with regards to her issue with Essence I thought she made a lot of valid points that I never even realized, BUT then at the end of her feature when she said, "But you won’t cover somebody like me because I based the earlier part of my career on my sexuality? My moral compass hasn’t been shifted off too much. My values are pretty good considering the causes that I believe in and places I’ve volunteered my time and given my money to, but you don’t feel the need to ever cover any single part of my career. You don’t even acknowledge that I even fucking exist. But this is what you cover and this is the thing you say? I think it’s hypocrisy." I thought, so this is what it all boils down to is that you're upset that Essence has never featured you in their magazine? Girl bye! Any valid points that Melyssa made about Essence's credibility or lack thereof was negated when she started complaining about how they refuse to feature her. Because what Melyssa's message tells readers is that she would not have an issue or shall I say, she likely would not have voiced her opinions about the Magazine in such a public way if the people over at Essence had paid her some nevermind...e.g. featured her in Essence. And to me, that's what you call hypocrisy Melyssa! Ok, bye! ~RR

um melyssa..they're trying to

um melyssa..they're trying to SELL (key word here) magazines to women. not men. Believe it or not there are still a lot of women outside of the "hip hop" community who dont even know who the hell you are..so how could you being on the cover sell a magazine?

How can you look past the

How can you look past the cursing when all she did was cuss??? Look past the issue she had with the article and look at her real issue which that she is not on a cover. I know bullchit when I read it.

She makes some excellent

She makes some excellent points. I actually bought the magazine and was taken aback by it all. I mean, here are these beautiful brothas on the cover of this well respected magazine. Then the caption that basically says "you could or probably have this but you dont know how to keep him happy." I thought it was a slap in the face. A man, any man, has to want to be faithful. He has to want to be with you. And if he doesnt then he doesnt. Thats like saying if he cheats, you should say to yourself you werent good enough and didnt make him happy. I just thought they were talking down to the readers like we need to be taught. She shouldnt be bitter. If she wants to be on the cover, say it. Dont hate.
ms.starkitty's picture

So true. Well said! If he

So true. Well said! If he cheats, it's something wrong with THEM. If you are with someone who doesn't make you happy, you can simply break it off with them and go find someone who is a better match. Some men just want to have their cake and eat it to. They have a perfectly good woman at home, but they are just too greedy and immature to be faithful. SMH

I'm amazed at most of the comments here...Look pass the cursing and the anger of being on the cover and see the real point. Which is why is it a womans responsibility to keep a man happy and faithful. Last I checked I was responsible for my own happiness and my morals. How about we stop trying to beat down this woman and look at the real issue she poses regarding the message that this magazine is putting into the atmosphere? I think it's worth discussing.
vanity1's picture

@Vanity Most women in here

@Vanity Most women in here can't do that. They are too busy being "angry black women." These women rather attack Ford for who she is rather than get the point of what she is saying which is valid. I did not even address her being on the cover because that's not the point and I don't even know who she is. LOL But her points are valid and not lost of most modern women in here.
FURY NEVER SLEEPS's picture

We're too busy being "angry

We're too busy being "angry black women"...? Wow, is that a joke? She was the one who brought up being covered in the magazine. None of us just assumed that was the point. She made it the point. Anytime someone speaks, you have to consider their motives and their credibility. This woman made her motives clear, she wants to be covered in the magazine. I agree with what she said about the headline, but I don't think she should be covered anywhere. Why? So we can glorify being a video hoe? Sorry, no.
MyOpinion's picture

I agree with you on the

I agree with you on the cover. She's very trashy with how she expressed herself. So based on that I would not put her on any cover. I don't know anything about her. But her points are valid about that horrible headline. So we are saying the same things. Some people miss the point in here because they are so busy attacking the messenger.

She need to have a seat. She is not in any position to dissect Essence when her entire career has been based on sex. She can go whine to King, Smooth and those other bullsh*t publications because that is the only place she is relevant in our community. I don't Essence but I don't like what she has represented for black women even more.

"Leave Melissa alone! So what if she is salty that she isn't on the cover? I think she deserves it because she is a black woman with cash flow. " are you serious? LOL I have cash flow too so I should also be on the cover. Since when has that qualified anyone as cover material?
blackpearl's picture

If you are a black woman with

If you are a black woman with significant cash flow yes, you do deserve to be on the cover. I mean what I say whole heartedly. Sadly in America, the average black woman has a net worth of $5. If you can help a misguided black woman or girl get on track with making money I would love to see you on the cover blackpearl. Not everyone is college material, not everyone is going to make six figures but why do we have to throw shade at someone that made a way for their self?

You need to read more:

You need to read more: According to a report released by the Insight Center for Community Economic Development this week, there is a vast discrepancy in wealth between single women of color and single white women. The study, "Lifting As We Climb: Women of Color, Wealth, and America's Future," found that while the median net worth of single white women ages 36-49 is $42,600 -- 61 percent of the median wealth for same-aged, single white men -- single women of color in the same age group have a median wealth of just $5. Black and Hispanic women are also drastically worse off in a broader age bracket, with almost half of single black and single Hispanic women ages 18-64 reporting zero or negative wealth (46 percent and 45 percent, respectively), compared with 23 percent of single white women, according to the report. (from the huffingtonpost)

I don't know if I believe this report and I need to know how they got this info. I know successful women of color. And none of them have a net worth of $5 LMAO This "report" seems off. And where are they finding these women?

I agree. And considerng how most news report down grade black women, I would question the validity of that information. Black women receive the most undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees of all ethnic groups, including white women. Black women are moving up not down.

I have been a subscriber and

I have been a subscriber and have purchased copies of Essence for many years. Admittedly, I have been disappointed in the magazine within the last year or so and have ceased buying it. I wish to be empowered, encouraged, enriched, educated and entertained and I think the emphasis on my "wish list" is no longer Essence. A lot of the articles and covers are about keeping men happy or faithful or why they stray. There are no definitive answers and at this point in my life...who cares? Give me the tools, tips and advice on becoming better, rather than constantly bashing Chris Brown and telling me why I need a man and what I need to do to keep him at home. As for Ms. Ford I understand her anger and bitterness on some level, but the profanity was not necessary. I don't think she has contributed much in terms of warranting a cover other than the magazines she has been "sprawled" across.

Melyssa you are a video slut.

Melyssa you are a video slut. While Essence is garbage now what you think publicly does not mean anything. The day you decide to start flaunting your sexuality, because you still do on Twitter with those pictures, then you can talk about who and what should be on cover or as an article. Are you mad because in all your sucking and phucking you still did not keep all those celebs you hit? I think Essence must have hit a nerve with that article. Whatever sluts like you cannot speak for us regular , not working on our backs black women.

I was with her until she

I was with her until she started talking about being on the cover. She should've kept it at the topic at hand, which was "How to Keep a Black Man Happy & Faithful". I totally agree with that part. Now, granted she did bring up a good point about Naomi Campbell being on the cover, but I don't understand her being upset about not getting a cover herself. Honestly, I only know of her from music videos. She needs to calm down and rethink her stance on the cover. Of course, Essence won't put a video vixen on the cover or in the magazine for that matter. #justsaying

I think the choice of words

I think the choice of words she used takes away from any point she might me making. But what is so offensive about wanting to keep your man happy? This is why so many of you females are not with anyone. You always see these so called successful women alone. Maybe if women were women men would not cheat on yall. Just a thought.

It's easy for folks to

It's easy for folks to criticize. Sounds like Miss Ford has some real issues. Don't be mad at ESSENCE because you chose to objectify yourself for the masses because you didn't have any true inkling of talent. Trust, the magazine isn't losing any sleep over your rant. I suppose now that Melyssa is aging and no one wants to see her 40-year-old T&A her self-worth has plummeted just like her doctor-induced balloons. Again, she needs to get a life and stop trying to attack a magazine who probably doesn't even know who she is. Stay in your lane with raggedy magazines like Smooth, King and Vibe-King because that's all the former editors of King has turned vibe into is a music-booty mag. that's the only coverage she'll ever get. LOL

Naomi is also a homewrecker, running around with her white married man....She doesn't even like being black and I don't think she has ever gone out with a black man..So I don't see why Essence should be celebrating Naomi...She has anger issues as well and have been in court more than most...Just because she looks cute taking a pic doesn't make her something or better than Melissa.

I love how miss melyssa always has an inflated sense of self. even when she was a video ho like the rest she had an air of condescension as if she was exploiting herself in these videos no different from karynne steffans or anyone else. She clearly has issues and trust me I can think of one aspect of her career that would make her worthy of coverage since all I can truly remember about her is T&A. LOL God bless her though, she should continue to believe in herself and one day she might just be holier than thou.

While I agree with what she is saying about how the article to keep your man happy and faithful sends the wrong message, the WAY she said is just downright ignorant. If she would've taken out all of the f***ing words, PERHAPS one would have been inclined to actually take what she said seriously. HOWEVER, since she took the ignant...yes ignant...azz route, she looks like a fool. *deep sigh* Is she serious about her never being on the cover? I'm sorry sweetie but what have you done besides flaunt your assets for the world to see on BET, King magazine and that corny movie with Jackie Long? That doesn't qualify you for even a blip in Essence magazine. I say ALL that to say....Melyssa....give it up. You missed the opportunity to make a wholesome impression the day you shook/showed your a** on tv. As my daughter would say, "Build a bridge and get over it."
