Tell 'Em Why You're Mad Nas!

Nas is fed up with Def Jam executives for not releasing his album yet. He wrote a letter to the company explaining his 99 problems.  And he didn't hold his tongue.  Read the letter when you go inside...

Seems like Nas has had enough waiting around for his album to be released. He took it upon himself to write the Def Jam execs with the subject line of "Put My Sh*t Out !"

Here's the letter in full:

From: Nas
To: LA Reid, Steve Bartels, Steve Gawley, Michael Seltzer, Joseph Borrino, Chris Hicks
Subject: PUT MY SHIT OUT!

Peace to all,

With all do respect to you all, Nas is NOBODY’s slave. This is not the 1800?s, respect me and I will respect you.
I won’t even tap dance around in an email, I will get right into it. People connect to the Artist @ the end of the day, they don’t connect with the executives. Honestly, nobody even cares what label puts out a great record, they care about who recorded it. Yet time and time again its the executives who always stand in the way of a creative artist’s dream and aspirations. You don’t help draw the truth from my deepest and most inner soul, you don’t even do a great job @ selling it. The #1 problem with DEF JAM is pretty simple and obvious, the executives think they are the stars. You aren’t…. not even close. As a matter of fact, you wish you were, but it didn’t work out so you took a desk job. To the consumer, I COME FIRST. Stop trying to deprive them! I have a fan base that dies for my music and a RAP label that doesn’t understand RAP. Pretty fucked up situation

This isn’t the 90?s though. Beefing with record labels is so 15 years ago. @ this point I just need you all to be very clear where I stand and how I feel about “my label.” I could go on twitter or hot 97 tomorrow and get 100,000 protesters @ your building but I choose to walk my own path my own way because since day one I have been my own man. I did business with Tommy Mottola and Donnie Einer, two of the most psycho dudes this business ever created. I worked well with them for one major reason……. they believed in me. The didn’t give a fuck about what any radio station or magazine said….those dudes had me.

Lost Tapes is a movement and a very important set up piece for my career as it stands. I started this over 5 years ago @ Columbia and nobody knew what it was or what it did but the label put it out as an LP and the fans went crazy for it and I single handlely built a new brand of rap albums. It’s smart and after 5 years it’s still a head of the game. This feels great and you not feeling what I’m feeling is disturbing. Don’t get in the way of my creativity. We are aligned with the stars here, this is a movement. There is a thing called KARMA that comes to haunt you when you tamper with the aligning stars. WE ARE GIVING THE PEOPLE EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT. Stop throwing dog shit on a MAGICAL moment.

You don’t get another Nas recording that doesn’t count against my deal….PERIOD! Keep your bullshit $200,000.00 fund. Open the REAL budget. This is a New York pioneers ALBUM, there ain’t many of us. I am ready to drop in the 4th quarter. You don’t even have shit coming out! Stop being your own worst enemy. Let’s get money!
-N.Jones

Nas sounds like he means business and makes some valid points. But I already know the argument of the execs will be--"Well you're not that hot right now."  Nas just released the Distant Relatives album with Damien Marley and got some pub for it, but not what the label was looking for.

Wonder if Lupe will follow his lead and do the same thing about his album?  Your thoughts?

On the real, Nas shouldn't

On the real, Nas shouldn't even have to be doing this for them to hear him. The man is a legend, a real artist and a creative genius. His work speaks for itself. #thatisall

Def Jam has gone to Hell in a

Def Jam has gone to Hell in a hat basket.... Nas is not the first artist to express his frustration and disappointment with the way the label chooses NOT to promote its established artists ----- Method Man, Redman and LL Cool J, and a few others all expressed frustration with Def Jam when Jay-Z was there stating that their albums barely got any promotion despite the fact that they are established artists that sell records - period. they may not go platinum every time, but there is an established fanbase and they will sell..... Why sign these artists if you don't expect a return on your investment? Why not promote and push their projects that you have invested your company's $$ in? It just seems stupid to me. People are tired of hearing the same old shit on the radio and would like to hear from other artists as well.....
Anonymous's picture

they sign them to silence

they sign them to silence them to get out of the way for younger artists. these new artists wouldn't have a chance if real artists were still getting burn. artists need to stop burning thru their money so that they can put their music out as independents. use the labels, stop depending on them! that's freedom

I don't know why ANY artist

I don't know why ANY artist would rock with L.A. Reid. He's ROBBED EVERY ARTIST he's ever signed. Let's see: Pink - dropped him because he was trying to change her image for profit Toni Braxton - had the worst contract in history next to TLC; the main reason she first filed bankruptcy and even had to cash in her grammy's Babyface - discontinued partnership with him because as a solo artist L.A. tried to run the same game when he was originally his partner TLC - got robbed blind with their long term contract they signed with L.A. and still aren't really recouping off their albums Outkast - got lawyers on him to change his contract Usher - Momma didn't like his contract and fought for re-negotiations Dame Dash - was mad at Jay when he should've been mad at L.A. because Jay was trying to get his Masters whereas Dame should've tried to get his % directly from L.A. Jay - only took the Def Jam job to get his Masters that they robbed ROC for and still had to pay $5 mil to get away from him. Jay won in the end because not only did he get his Masters, his album sold more than the Jay set they put out trying to get money off him. Janet - L.A. wouldn't put money into promoting her album nor would he pay for videos and in turn it flopped Patti - signed a no win deal with L.A. and ultimately got shelved because he took the money and promoted Mariah Etc. - every artist he's ever signed he's jerked and Pink was the first to publicly get in his ass and now Nas. Kudo's to them.

NAS IS RIGHT!!!! DEF JAM

NAS IS RIGHT!!!! DEF JAM EXECS THINK THEY ARE STARS AND THEY AREN'T THEY WISH THEY WERE THAT'S WHY THEY HAVE A DESK JOB!!! DEF JAM WASTE SO MUCH TIME PROMOTING SH#TTY ARTISTS BUT THEY CAN'T PROMOTE AN ICON LIKE NAS!!! SMH!!! MUSIC HAS REALLY DROPPED I SAID IT BEFORE AND I WILL SAY IT AGAIN BIEBER NEEDS 2 GO!!! L.A REID SIGNS BEIBER PROMOTES HIM AND NAS IS A VETERAN WHO JUST WANTS HIS ALUM TO BE RELEASED!!! Y'ALL WHO LISTEN TO MUSIC NEED TO QUIT LISTENING TO BIEBER, RIHANNA WE NEED TO SUPPORT DEF JAM ARTISTS LIKE CHRISETTE MICHELE & NAS!!!!! THEY ARE VERY TALENTED!!!
That's Wrong's picture

I applaud Nas for standing up

I applaud Nas for standing up to the DEF JAM executives; however, his approach was wrong. This is a business to these guys and if you are going to approach them with anger and concerns, you have to approach it from a business stand point. Nas’ letter was all anger and no business – it was personal, as it is should be for him, but he needed a business angle in there. He should’ve demanded that the executives release his album by a certain date or they would have to face some type of consequences, which would be difficult because he’s probably under contract. This is why artists have business managers, people that understand the business and can negotiate on behalf of their artists. Nas needs to approach the issue, but from a different stance.
Erinn D's picture

You are right! I understand

You are right! I understand that he's upset, but this is not the way to get what you want. In fact, it will more than likely backfire. If he think they are stalling to release his CD, hell, after this letter, it may NEVER make it to market. People need to know when to "get crunk" and when to be humble. At the end of the day, the executives as the decision-makers, not Nas.
Get it Together Black People's picture

I agree that he should

I agree that he should absolutely tell them how he feels, but this letter was a sloppy approach for a grown ass man. Not to mention, he sounds jaded, juvenile and a little bit crazy. Still love Nas though...just never knew this side of him.
The Anti's picture

You said EXACTLY what I was

You said EXACTLY what I was thinking! He has every right, as a living legend, to let them know the deal. But the letter was a tad on the immature side. It almost made me not wanna side with him but then I remembered the leeches the letter is addressed to.

I hate to put this out there

I hate to put this out there like this, but I am an artist and I had a meeting with LA Reid some years ago and he was clapping and having a good time while I was performing. All of the staff was in there rocking. Well I just found out about a year ago that the reason he passed on me was because my skin wasn't LIGHT ENOUGH! This dark skin brother stopped one avenue for me because of my skin tone. It wasn't the talent, but with that being said I wish it was the talent at least that could be improved or fixed, but my skin tone!!! WOW! That just let me know Nas is absolutely right they are looking at artist through their eyes and I'm sorry, but LA Reid has passed up on a few stars and I KNOW that I'm one included. It's just a piece to that chapter but not the end of the story.

I just feel like if people

I just feel like if people don't know the impact the Nas has had in the rap game, They shouldn't say anything. They talk like he's been a flop artist since forever! research before you type!
Trisha's picture

The only artist Def Jam

The only artist Def Jam supports right now is rihanna bcuz she does what they want she is a puppet, they dont produce real music anymore and they dnt support true/real artist. The industry is not as it use to be, it is now run by "OTHER PPL" we know who those ppl are..and therefore they push gimmicks...how many "true artists" are really being promoted in this day & age very very few and the promotion they get is just so so nothing major like the ones who are just simply "manufactured products" of the industry, and this is very very sad...this is what music has come down to..its a damn shame!!

Texas Girl's picture

I get what he's saying, but

I get what he's saying, but he needs to face reality. He isn't a major act anymore. He was once a platinum act and now he can't go gold. Why would he be a priority? He needs to call a lawyer and get off the label or just deal with it. He's got all kinds of debts to pay, so he needs that album out. I wish him the best with this though. Lupe as well.

Def Jam has really lost their

Def Jam has really lost their minds. They've got an honestly talented artist, a proven talent at that, and they're putting him on hold. I bought Distant Relatives, and saw the duo perform in concert a few weeks back. It was indeed, as Nas put it, magical. That kind of stage presence and content is almost unheard of in 2010. But like someone else said, you have to make your point with your money. I've already supported that one album three times over, and own every other piece of material Nas has put out- and I'm hard pressed to buy a lot of music these days. Record execs should show some appreciation for their veteran acts who are still able to produce. Since crowds always follow the hype (whether there is talent or not, it seems), give him the publicity he needs to be successful. He will be.

Tell 'em why you mad dun son!

Tell 'em why you mad dun son! Hahaha! No but in all honesty I feel what he's saying about artistry but he can now sit down with that bullshyt. No record label cares about your art as much as they care about their money. If your shyt isn't selling and you aren't pulling in revenue for them then they could care less. He has some big shyt to say talking about the execs wanting to be famous and yada ya but truth of the matter is many of them have more money than you ever will Nasir. Everyone knows that the ni**as behind the scenes are really the ones cheesing you dumb a** artist. I'm not mad that you think you're the shyt either. A true king of New York but if everytime you put out an album it's a bust then what does that really make you???? To call yourself a king, Mr. Hot Shyt you have to prove it. You, my dear, have proved nothing in a very long time.

Trisha's picture

You are another hater in

You are another hater in disguise. You said' "every time Nas puts out an album it's a bust" how is Nas having 8 platinum and several of those multiplatinum and 1 gold album a "bust." Nas has sold almost 30 million albums worldwide. Then you go on to say about the executives having more money than the artist but what does that have to do with the artist creative process and music being properly marketed. It is comments like yours that let me know that people truly don't know shit about an artists' work or career besides what they read on gossip sites. Get some knowledge about Nas as an artist before you try to sneak diss the man besides he has been doing this for damn near 20 years. Every great artist with longevity in the industry has had problems with executives of labels Michael Jackson. Prince, Janet Jackson, Mariah, Jay-z, Nas, Diddy, 50 cent, Lupe and the list goes on!

Nas is hot and what other

Nas is hot and what other artist could even pull off a Distant Relatives album in this climate and debute at #5 on the Billboard Top 200!? Nas Distant Relatives Tour is sold out across the globe and there are artist with #1 hits on the radio and billboard and still have not went gold. Nas last solo LP 'Untitled' went Gold in a month with NO radio airplay and you people think Nas is not hot because he is not on the radio...PLEASE! You people have no clue! B.O.B, Gucci, Waka have yet to receive a GOLD plaque. Shit Drake just received his platinum plaque and he was the hottest thing out! Nas does great with no radio support or blogs hyping his music like they do the trash music played on the radio!

Signing a petition is different than staging a protest which he mentioned in his letter. 100,000 people in protest requires incredible mobilization and I am confident that would not happen over a Nas record.

A more effective letter might have had had a better command of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. On the subject of his music release, he probably needs to go independent and distribute it himself. This all sounds very much like the saga of Kamal the Abstract.
