Jazmine Sullivan Says She Wants To Quit The Music Industry, Then Changes Her Mind?!

Seems like one of R&Bs brightest stars is burning out fast.  Jazmine Sullivan recently took to Twitter to announce she was turning her back on the music industry because she wasn't having fun anymore.  Not surprised knowing what these ladies feel like they have to do in order to get some shine these days.  And actually needing talent--like Jazzy has--isn't a necessity.

Get the deets inside...

In a statement posted on her Twitter account yesterday, 23-year-old Jazmine Sullivan said:

"i promised myself when it wasn’t fun anymore i wouldn’t do it. and here i am. i love u all and appreciate u soooooo much. u have no idea how much u’ve inspired me and fed my ego," the singer shared. "but the truth is that i have to believe in me whether you all do or not. and thats what i’m lookin for. that belief in myself. me. I. i love us. thanks for being here for me and riding with me on this journey. let us continue. [sic]"

What prompted this posting still remains a mystery, also, the tweets were suspiciously deleted an hour later, but not before VIBE.com caught them.  As of now, there has been no official word from Jazmine's camp or her record company.

I wonder if we will see Jazmine at the Grammys.  She was nominated for this year's Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for "Holding You Down (Goin' In Circles)."

Here's Jazmine's announcement in full:

Lots of her fans Tweeted her back like crazy pleading for her to not leave.  And since the tweets were deleted, did she change her mind?  Hope so....

Jazmine should be born a

Jazmine should be born a decade if she wants to sound depressed when she type nonsense on her twitter account like she did.. There is a huge difference in mentality to the times we currently live in and this is very unfortunate. No one really cares about soulful music anymore which is why she is probably depressed. Like more naïve and uneducated yonug female singers who want to establish major record deals haven't a clue that all the money in the advance negotiations pay for Most things such as the produces, promo etc. Labels have budgets and accountants showing their numbers have to double or its not worth it. People need to realize that there were over 40 billion illegal downloads in 2008 whiles 1.6 cd's sold. This pretty much speaks for those who believe labels care to lose at of money funded into an artist and not recoup it back. That would obviously be a very bad business deal then. Jazmine seems naïve. And those who are over weight and to lazy to stay fit will always try to justify something for a self administered solution. YES, it is not far that skinny pretty girl who can not sing like Rihanna. But blame the fans who become the puppets on supporting their garbage. Jazmine needs to grow up and face the music she wants to sing and if that takes going indie then she needs to women up and do it!

Its hard out there for people

Its hard out there for people with real talent. Folks these days spend money on gimmicks. Had Jazmine come out in the pre-hip hop era, she would have been a superstar. Nowadays in the black community, if you are not half naked, shaking your behind, light skinned female with a mile long weave, sleeping around, dating an ignorant athlete or ignorant rapper or without a sex tape, you will stay below the radar. If I were her I would do pop and sing to white people. Her music is very inspiring and thought provoking. Its not this mindless drivel playing in excess on black radio.

I could never get into Jazmine Sullivan for some reason. She looks dirty like she needs a nice scrub and like she is stuck up. Plus she has a football players neck and hairy azz arms and chest. Girl, invest in long sleeves and turtle necks if razors are not your friend.

OMG you are such a hater you

OMG you are such a hater you must be unhappy in life I will pray for you. The music industry has nothing at all to do with talent. Its about selling yourself and being a part of clicks a.k.a Jay Z, Rihanna, Kanye West. This girl has tooo much talent and is gorgeous and has the image of a regular women that we could all relate to. Im sure she is filling pressure of losing weight and the music industry is not what she hoped it would be. So it is never to late to go on a different career path. She is gorgeous and seems like a wonderful lady all the best to her.

I love her voice but that

I love her voice but that last cd was horrible. The lyrics were great but it did not flow or complement the beat(sound). I can only bare to listen to her singles, sigh. I think she should work on doing a mixtape and play around with different beats & just become more open with her overall persona. I just hope she doesn't fall into the club/pop genre to "fit in". Good luck to her, I'll be watching.

hhhmmmmmmm......so much to

hhhmmmmmmm......so much to say about this.......... I've been following Jazmine before she got the deal w/J Records and LOVE HER! Okay......here's the deal............for starters, Jazmine's thinking has got to change. From things she's said in interviews, you can tell the girl wants so bad to be successful and has been tricked into thinking that she needed a "record deal" to do so. IMHO.......she had enough buzz to get a nice lil' independent career on and popping for herself but nooooooooo......she had to have a record deal with a "major". Her and her camp are stuck in 1995, it's 2011 people wake up! Sign to an independent label......if you sell 50,000 copies, you'll make a hell of a lot more $ than you will selling 50,000 through a "major", you will actually see royalties from units sold, you NEVER will on a major.......ugh! frustrates the hell outta me that artists still see a major recording contract as the ultimate measure of success and the holy grail of music when in fact it's not, their business model is dissolving FAST and there are sooo many other ways that artists can earn a living and be successful now through various revenue streams........she really needs a good business team in place ASAP. Now for the real deal, nitty gritty............*NEWSFLASH*.......I Love Missy Elliot and think she's a very talented writer and producer BUT!!!!! She is NOT the right producer for where Jazmine needs and wants to go. The girl does have "it"........it's just that they're not playing to her strengths. Missy writes hot joints for "da moment" nothing per se.......classic. Jazmine's voice is entirely too dope and people are waiting for a talent like hers to shine to it's fullest potential...........that can't happen while she's stuck singing these run of the mill, plain ol' ordinary R&B songs that damn near ANYBODY can sing. She needs to be writing and singing music that has depth to match her tone and talent.........She did a cover of Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" and KILLED IT! THAT'S what she needs to be singing!!!!! Or at least, songs of that calibre!!!! Ugh! I know I'm going to ruffle some feathers with this but even her first single....."Need You Bad" was a run of the mill Lauryn Hill esq' song.......nothing special. But problem is that because Jazmine can REALLY sing, people think that that makes up for a sub par song.........it doesn't! If that girl got the right team of writers and producers together!?!?!??!?!..........she will KILL it! These first two albums ain't doing it, to go to the next level she's going to need the writing talent and production that can take her there. Who and what she's working with right now ain't it.........sorry, it's just the truth.......
Al DeCosey's picture

I agree whole heartedly.

I agree whole heartedly. There are not too many good singers. Jazmine is a great singer!! Anthony Hamilton, Jazmine Sullivan (to name a few) are singers of these days that have the pipes to sing anything. It really would be a shame if Jazmine retires. I bought both her albums and loved them. However, I always said that she doesn't have the right team to promote her talent. I love Missy Elliot, but she is not a fit with Jazmine. I think Jazmine needs a more older experience producer (Babyface). The girl is a diamond and I was looking at her to blosom to one of the biggest of our times!! She just need to stay strong and be herself (forget what people are trying to mold her into). But don't give up!! All of the storms, rain, snow, sleet, sun, will only make her blosom to be the greatest. And she most definitely is !!

Don't think for a second that

Don't think for a second that because you are a "fan," and have followed her career that you have any clue of what goes on behind the scenes. No artist, independent or major, aspires to sell 50,000. That are positives and negatives with both sides and there is nothing wrong with signing with a major if the company really believes in your and backs up their words with the necessary staff to see that a project is successul. As far as your critique on her music, JAZMINE WRITES ALL OF HER MUSIC. Therefore, Jazmine is in control of what beat she chooses to write to. Nobody is making her write what she writes. She's in charge in that regard. And for you to call "Need U Bad" a "run of the mill, plain ol' ordinary R&B song," I would love to see what's in your catalog. I know that since that record has been released, there hasn't been another r&b female singer with something as creative and original as that song - vocally or lyrically. And if you compare the song to being Lauryn Hill esq, that negates your entire argument that it's nothing special, as she's one of the greats. I understand the purpose of blogs - to make unimportant people feel like their ideas matter - but your "truth" is nothing short of an opinion.
Anonymous's picture

No clue of what goes on

No clue of what goes on behind the scenes? lol......okay, here goes....... so much to say to you, not enough time or space, I'll try to make this as short as possible..........this is going to go fast, please keep up. 1. No need to be snarky or snide, this is an OPEN forum where ppl can express their "opinions" or whatever you want to call it. If you can't handle it, then reading this blog is DEFINITELY not for you ;-) 2. There's a major difference between an "informed opinion" and just an opinion, hopefully this response shows you the difference. 3. Jazmine DOES NOT single handedly write all of her material. In as much as she's very involved and a part of the process the album PRODUCER(s) and the LABEL decide what material makes the cut vs. what doesn't. So in as much as you'd like to believe that Jazmine is 100% in control, not the case.....check the album credits......nuff said. Considered still somewhat of a "new" artist, she probably has very little control over these type of decisions. 4. You missed the whole point of me referencing 50K in sales on a major vs. indie. Point was.....while no one aspires to sell 50K, you have to find a healthy balance between a dream and reality. Again, given what I know of her prior to her major label and deal and her sales numbers now.....like I said, she would have been better off going the indie route. A report was done by http://www.ifpi.org that surveyed labels and found that it takes anywhere from $1 - $1.5 million to break a new artist now. Do you know Jazmine's latest soundscan numbers? in her first week she debuted on Billboard 200 @ 17 with sales of 55,700, a week later she was barely in the top 50 and even with the Christmas holiday, she's fallen out of the top 50 all together.........she hasn't even sold 100K at this point. So do you honestly think the label will pump even $500K into her album for marketing and promo let alone $1 millie? not a chance. 5. As far as labels having the staff to support artists........they don't! Most of these labels are a downsized version of what labels used to be, basically a skeleton crew. Labels now a days don't just pump money into newbies, you have to show that you can generate sales with limited resources/marketing/promotion, then if things take off, then they back you with more $ once you prove to be worth the investment. Prime example, name at least 3 artist within the last 5 years who didn't already have a million views on youtube and or a gazillion followers thru social media who a major label signed and just pumped money into them? you'll be hard pressed. Labels only financially back folks who have some kind of verifiable successful track record that they think will translate into big $$$$$. Not for nothing, she has gotten a considerable amount of support from the label though radio promotions and airplay, her music just isn't connecting with the wider audience that it needs to by major label standards. 6. You're all caught up in other singers and who's doing what creatively and "original" as you say, but at the end of the day this is a BUSINESS and either you're making money for the label or your not. In 1999 the recorded music business was a $14.7 Billion industry, as of 2009 it's a $6.3 Billion industry. They've lost more than 50% in revenue in a decade.....you do the math! 7. Your Lauryn Hill connection/logic is OFF! I mentioned her only for the fact that the song sounded like a Lauryn Hill song. Obviously there's no connection between the two like you tried to infer because if there was we wouldn't be having THIS conversation.......she would have racked up all the accolades, awards, and sales that Lauryn Hill did but she didn't. Bottom line is, she's depressed and music is no longer fun because she's feeling the heat from her label for not selling enough units. The major labels are owned by conglomerates who only care about the bottom line. Either you can make music that they can market and that will connect with a wide enough audience for them to make a return on their investment or they will kick you to the curb. When I knew she signed with J Records, I already saw this meltdown coming, expect her to get dropped next. I'd be surprised if she even sees another album on J Records. You want to discuss art and argue over opinions, when the discussion should be about commerce (economics) and should include facts. Your turn :)

I have to disagree with you.

I have to disagree with you. There are Plenty of Indie and Major artists that would be satisfied with selling 50K copies. Gone are the days where everyone sold a million. Now TOP artists are selling @ 100k first week. Great albums are usually slow simmers anyway. These are good numbers in todays time with all of the downloading and free music available. Rihanna only sold 150K her last album with ALL of that promo. Gone are the days when album sales shud be a key indicator of success. TICKET sales are where the money is. There are hundreds of successful artists that make great money touring the world. Most of them couldn't care less about radio play. Nobody respects the radio anymore. Anyone who judges success only by radio play is not a Real music lover and wouldn't understand the Real game anyway. A mature ear or anyone hungry for REAL art/music, knows where to find it, and will pay to see a great show. Check out all of these festivals with hndreds of thousands of attendees. Do you hear these bands/artists on the radio every minute?? The game has imprisioned some of our minds and ears. So sad after all of these years of destrying one of the most powerful industries, you still dont get it!!

I love Jazzy - I think her

I love Jazzy - I think her voice is incomparable, especially considering the current state of R&B and Neo Soul. I thoroughly enjoyed both of her CD's - Fearless & Love Me Back. Sometimes her incredibly mature voice belies the fact that Jazz is a very young lady. She needs to stay grounded and grateful for the opportunities she has. Some people are out here on their grind for minimum wage. I like her look-she is carrying excess weight that is not healthy for her, especially when you're gearing up to do tours, and other promo that requires endurance. However, losing excess weight and becoming hypersexualized are two totally different things. People, including celebs, have to learn to use social media in a responsible way - once you put somethin' out there you cannot take it back. Talk to your pastor, a counselor, your family, a mentor - you do not post things like that with "Twitter."

I love Jazmine's voice she is a true talented...Been a fan since she performed at the 5 spot in Philly back in the day when she was 14 - But her last album was horrible. Her single seemed like a regenerated Mary J - She needs to take stock of her career and it's direction and take some control of it - - Alot of you want to bring Katy Perry and Rihanna into it - I think they are apple and oranges...but at least those two maintain some control over their musical direction.....Jazmine dooo you....don't let your talent go to waste...so no to the man trying to dumb down your music...own you! It's sad to hear that Ms. Sullivan is leaving the business. Who knows what they wanted her to do or compromise. Her talent should be enough. But, we have to keep in mind who owns these record companies - jewish and caucasian, rich men. We need our own businesses and support one another. Jazmine is only 23 years old. She has plenty of time and talent to explore other options.

You all need to get off

You all need to get off thinking you have to be naked to sell. Newsflash, the singers that are doing that are not selling as many CDs as they want. Only Beyonce but even she cannot really match what the other singers who do none of these things are selling. Plus she is a brand and doing other things as well to make her money. The singers making money singing are Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Susan Boyle (and she aint no beauty queen!), and a few others. Norah Jones used to do very well in her genre of music without having to take her clothes off. Jazmine simply does not have the "it" factor which has nothing to do with her complexion, her weight, etc. This means she cannot seem to attract the people that can help her and the songs that will take her to the next level. None of her CDs have made me want to go out and get them. I cannot support someone just for the sake of supporting someone. I have to like what you put out. Unfortunately for her, not a lot of people identify with her which is hurting her sales. Maybe she needs to take some time off to discover how to connect with people.

i beg to differ this girl has the "it" factor and then some, perhaps she is stressed and needs time to think of the direction she wants to go in as far as her singing career. She's a great artist with more talent than most and will come out VICTORIOUS in the end because the first step to correction is admitting NEED! If unsatisfied admit then make corrective CHANGE! Hope she doesn't stay away to long....
