Mo'Nique Announces The 2011 Academy Award Nominations

2010 Best Supporting Actress Winner Mo'Nique announced the 2011 Academy Award nominations today and we have the main categories inside for you.  Sadly, there weren't any raisins in the oatmeal...

The 2010 movie season was a particularly good one for African Americans with movies like Why Did I Get Married Too?, For Colored Girls and Takers having strong box office showings and individuals like Whoopi Goldberg, Kimberly Elise, Tyler Perry and Idris Elba turning out great performances.  And with Anthony Mackie in Night Catches Us and Denzel Washington in The Book of Eli, there were many buzzworthy performances out there.

I'm sure you have your own opinions about who got shut out, but here's who did get nominated:

Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, The Fighter; Helena Bonham Carter, The King's Speech; Melissa Leo, The Fighter; Hailee Steinfeld (who is only 14), True Grit ; Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom

Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale, The Fighter; John Hawkes, Winter's Bone; Jeremy Renner, The Town; Mark Ruffalo, The Kids Are All Right; Geoffrey Rush, The King's Speech

Best Actress: Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right; Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole; Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone; Natalie Portman, Black Swan; Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine

Best Actor: Javier Bardem, Biutiful, Jeff Bridges, True Grit; Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network; Colin Firth, The King's Speech; James Franco, 127 Hours

Best Director: Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan; David O. Russell, The Fighter; Tom Hooper, The King's Speech; David Fincher, The Social Network; Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, True Grit

Best Picture: Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Winter's Bone

Are there any YBF celebs you feel were left out of today's nominations?  Which movies/actors/actresses would you add to the list?  The Awards are Feb. 27th on ABC and hosted by actors Anne Hathaway and James Franco.

EDIT: We want to make clear that we are not insisting that a "black" film should have been nominated just because, we are simply presenting the facts and asking the question as some of our readers do believe certain talent was left off the list.  This is a venue to  speak your mind.

For the record: Our favorites are Black Swan, The Fighter, and Social Network--for actors, directing, and the movies themselves.

I have to say that I was

I have to say that I was expecting at least one award for Tyler Perry's "For Colored Girls". All you who say the movie was a waste or that this was something where you wanted a refund after have obviously not seen or read the play that was written many years ago. This movie is a good one that Tyler Perry took to a whole new level. This is his first R rated film and even in that Critiques everywhere were giving this movie an A and B rating when most or should I say all of his movies have C, D, and F ratings with the key being D and F ratings. I cannot speak and say that Hollywood Oscar people are racist but I can say that Tyler Perry is one of the few who puts such a great cast of African Americans in a movie together giving them roles to let them shine through. Hollywood has yet to realize the true talent that was in this For Colored Girls movie and the movie was nominated at one point but then just removed off the list. If it was up to me I would give this movie at least 2 nominations for Best director and Best picture. But then again that is just me. People see things differently. This is just what I think.

Spike Lee, Gina

Spike Lee, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Robert Townsend we need you! We need plots with substance and some different faces on the big screen. Halle is cool but there's a PLETHORA of incredibly talented black actors who need to be featured. Also, I'm so tired of rappers and singers taking roles from professionally trained actors/actresses!!!! -A 19 year old girl and daughter of a drama teacher

There are some

There are some actors/directors who want to win awards and others just want to make money. Tyler Perry wants the latter. He doesn't want or need critical acclaim because his fan base will still support him regardless.

Say what you want but Elise

Say what you want but Elise Neal killed her part in "For Colored Girls" And shouldnt something be said for giving a great performance while working with sooo little? I can't wait for the day when black folk can get behind the camera and hire other black folks instead of beggin' white folks to hire them!

Let just be honest here

Let just be honest here people, For Colored Girls was a colored MESS and not worthy of a second look let alone an Oscar Nomination. It was painful to see some of my favorite actresses choke on that tired dialogue. I saw Halle's movie and...eh. The state of black cinema is very sad.

Why did I get married too

Why did I get married too should not even be part if this conversation. Just because its black doesn't make it Oscar worthy. In fact we are pulrling up the rear in good scripts. What wasn't nominated was inception. Leonard dicaprio was shifted way more than Tyler Perry.

Is race an issue in this

Is race an issue in this nation? Yes. But that does not mean you should retreat from the world. Where would Barack Obama be if he felt the way you suggest? If you think that being President of the NAACP is better than being President of the United States of America you're crazy. Racism is not an excuse. Look at Denzel Washington he's won many TIMES. The sad thing is that people do think like you and they never challenge themselves or do work that is challenging. Think about people who compete despite race like Serena and Venus Williams. I suggest you come into the year 2011. Stop being a VICTIM. because TALENT is TALENT and it has to be recognized. People like you will always be separate and out of the loop because you buy into this idea that one race is better than the NEXT.
FURIOUS STYLES's picture

It's not about retreating

It's not about retreating from the world! It's about doing for yourselves and not begging for approval from white people.
Anonymous's picture

Begging? You're missing the

Begging? You're missing the point. Do yout think Serena Williams "BEGGS" the Tennis World to give her awards? Do you think Obama "begged" the American people to make him President? Why not try and give the BEST PERFORMANCE? Sorry but most African American actors are not the best actors because they don't get the best material and they sure don't write the best. Some do and they do get nominated....sometimes you don't. Ryan Gosling was better than Javier but he was not nominate. Life is not always FAIR but you're looking at it the wrong way. Tyler Perry has made a way for himself but his movies are hardly the BEST. Denzel did not BEG to get an Oscar his performances were nuance and strong and he WON it. You can't deny greatness. History has proven that. If you can understand that you know what I'm talking about. There is nothing wrong with ownership and innovation just make sure you're still striving to be the BEST no matter what you do and you can't be denied. It's that simple.

This is not the Academy's

This is not the Academy's doing, this is the fault of the producers that develop the scripts that are written and produced into feature films. There are no scripts being chosen that have lead actresses that are Black women. Tyler Perry is trying, but his movies are pretty much a joke to serious film makers, so the actresses his picks are scathe over by Hollywood and the Academy. What needs to happen is Blacks needs to start taking movie making seriously. We're too busy coming out with comedy after comedy, but never anything in other genres such as Drama and Fantasy. Once we change the direction that are movies are being made in, then we will start to get the recognition that we deserve. Change starts from within.

Wow...why are u folks so

Wow...why are u folks so vicious...It looks like Monique was making the announcement. That is a bit hard to do with ur mouth shut. Anyway, I agree that Tyler Perry's movies are simply not Oscar worthy. Look at what he did to Color Girls. That should have been his Oscar coming out party but instead, he turned it into one of his many typical, male bashing, low self-esteem women movies. Even my friends wanted their money back. I sometimes feel that he has lost all creative juices as a producer/director and instead of listening to others or inviting fresh ideas, it's now all about making money cause he knows he has a strong African-American following. But, isn't that just simply using us? He needs to step up his game or he will lose way more than an Oscar nod or two.
tellmeaboutit's picture

Are you serious male

Are you serious male bashing......It's just one side of a story. He had you look inside other people lives and the relationship issues they have..Not saying all people have those issues.. Those issues are not only happening with black woman , but also with woman of all races....You have men on the down low, marrying women. You have men who are abusive to the women in their lives, and Im sure everyone has known someone who was raped by someone they know...Powerful scene with Ms Rose explaining how being raped by someone you're affiliated with and not a stranger you would think it would be.....now you may have not thought it was a great movie...but some of the performances were Oscar worthy....such as Anika Rose, and Loretta Devine....

Halle Berry's portrayal of a woman with multiple personalities in Frankie & Alice was superlative! She eloquently acts out subtle and believable emotions all while looking beautiful. If you liked Natalie Portman's interpretation of mental illness you should definitely see this movie.

I love movies, good movies.

I love movies, good movies. Hollywood is such a disapointment on diversity! Why should it be black films and white films. I want to see films with diverse actors, point black! black movies lately ..... don't meet the mark, they present one- dimensional stereotypes of black characters, just like Hollywood. 2009 and 2010, I thought I would see more diverse roles for colored actors ..especially with black actors. And we should demand better! I want to see out the box characters , articulate, jaw dropping, non traditional black characters. Damn it!
