Kobe Bryant has issued a statement apologizing for last night's incident where he let his emotions get the best of him and was seen mouthing the words "f**king f**got" at an NBA referee. Get the deets inside....

*UPDATE* Kobe was fined $100,000 by the NBA commissioner for this incident.

"Kobe Bryant's comment during last night’s game was offensive and inexcusable," NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement. "While I'm fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated. Accordingly, I have fined Kobe $100,000. Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society."

During a tense moment in last nights Lakers Vs. Spurs game, Kobe Bryant was seen mouthing the word "f**got" towards a referee who charged him with a technical foul.

He issued a statement earlier today saying,

"What I said last night should not be taken literally. My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone.”

He was forced to respond because the backlash was swift and intense. The Human Rights Campaign lashed out at Kobe saying it is, "a disgrace for Kobe Bryant to use such horribly offensive and distasteful language, especially when millions of people are watching."

In a statement to TMZ they continued:

"Hopefully Mr. Bryant will recognize that as a person with such fame and influence, the use of such language not only offends millions of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) people around the world, but also perpetuates a culture of discrimination and hate that all of us, most notably Mr. Bryant, should be working to eradicate."

The Lakers front office was also contacted by The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination (GLAAD). And they're far from happy. I see ish is gettng REAL right before the playoffs....

what people seem not to get

what people seem not to get in situations like this is there's a difference between saying it when it could be equally interchanged with other equally as offensive slurs simply in the heat and passion of the moment, as games often are AND saying it out of disgust or serious and intent-filled discriminatory ideals. it was a basketball game, right before the playoffs, his team hasn't been playing all that well and he got hit with a foul he took offence to. everything should be considered IN THE CONTEXT OF THE GAME. "golden child" or not, he's freakin human. how many of us mouth off when we've just gone and stubbed our toe or something?? and that hardly involves the passion and emotion of a professional sporting game! of course he was wrong, he knows it. he's not bloody stupid! but come on now, take a step back and judge the situation in light of the evenings events and not as some worldwide proclamation of hatred for the gay and lesbian community!

In the heat of the moment and in frustration, he INTENTIONALLY hurled an offensive verbal assault on the ref. He intended to insult the man. The gay and lesbian community is upset with the fact that in order to offend, Kobe chose to use a gay slur AND in such a public forum. I understand how Kobe was heated and caught up in the emotion of the game. He can say what he wants on the court, but he must deal with the consequences of his action. The $100K fine was fair given the totality of the situation. If Dirk Novitzky yelled you f*cking n*gga, sp*c, "(insert your own derogatory term here)" I doubt you'd be so forgiving.

What he says is a reflection on these organizations, just as what we do every day in our jobs is a reflection on our employers. So gays and lesbian organizations rightfully, stepped directly to the Lakers and the NBA with their concerns and criticisms. And Stern acted appropriately. It's not about "sensitivity", it's about right and wrong. I wouldn't let my child hurl nasty comments at other kids and then tell the parents of those kids to all go grow a thicker skin.
