Wanda Sykes REVEALS She Had Breast Cancer AND Underwent A Double Mastectomy

In a shockingly candid interview with Ellen DeGeneres (airing on Monday), funnywoman Wanda Sykes (shown above with wife Alex) reveals that earlier this year she discovered she had breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy. Get the deets inside....

Leave it to comedienne Wanda Sykes to find the humor in her cancer diagnosis. In an interview that airs on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Monday, the 47-year-old revealed "I had breast cancer. Yeah, I know it's scary."

Wanda says she discovered the cancer after going in for a breast reduction.

"I had real big boobs and I just got tired of knocking over stuff. Every time I eat — oh lord. I'd carry a Tide stick everywhere I go. My back was sore so it was time to have a reduction."

She continued,

"It wasn't until after the reduction that in the lab work, the pathology, that they found that I had DCIS [ductal carcinoma in situ] in my left breast. I was very, very lucky because DCIS is basically stage-zero cancer. So I was very lucky."

So faced with a hard decision, Wanda opted for a double mastectomy.

"I had both breasts removed, because now I have zero chance of having breast cancer."

She then explained how she arrived at the hard decision....

"I had the choice of, you can go back every three months and get it checked. Have a mammogram, MRI every three months just to see what it's doing," she explained. "But, I'm not good at keeping on top of stuff. I'm sure I’m overdue for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already."

It's good to know that Wanda is doing well now. And we will be seeing a lot more of her. She added that she's taken on cancer as one of her charitable causes.

"I was real hesitant about doing this, because I hate walking. I got a lot of [cancer] walks coming up."

Wow...glad she caught the

Wow...glad she caught the cancer early, but did her doctor really tell her that she could never get breast cancer again...I'm still in treatment for my breast cancer and if I had opted for the mastectomy, I was told there was never a zero percent chance of recurrence because there is actually like 3% of breast tissue left behind. I wish her only the best.

i'm going to list some points

i'm going to list some points which show that homosexuality is destructive to humanity. 1/ THEY CAN'T PROCREATE OR REPRODUCE. And please!! don't speak about the "in vitro trend" to me because back in the days, there were no in vitro procedure. What's the meaning of this ? It means that if humankind were homosexual, at the beginning of the time, you, i ,and everybody on the earth would never have been here, because of the incapability for them to reproduce. A man and a woman can procreate( as everybody knows). That is the only and main reason that justify the existence of the humankind today. 2/THEIR WAY OF HAVING SEX IS NASTY AND DANGEROUS AND UN-NATURAL. Why? Because a penis has been made to be fit for a vagina. Not for an anus. Gay men must use vaseline to be able to have sex (otherwise they would not be able to or would bleed. Some had to undergo a surgery to repair their anus because of this sexual practice etc...). Lesbian have to use sex toys to do so. Straight people don't need anything of such because everything comes easily and naturally. Unlike homosexual. 3/ THEM ADOPTING KIDS There is so much to talk about this subject. But i'm going to make it short. A child needs both a father and a mother to get built up in every aspect of his/her life. It's very IMPORTANT.The fact that the child could have a lack of these 2 influences in his life will be very damaging for his/her mind. Gays CAN procreate and reproduce. This is 2011, how can you make your arguement based on what science could or could not do 1500 years ago. 1500 years ago most of the children that were born died before the age of 5... you want to go back to those days? If everything stayed how it was 1500 year ago consider what you would be doing? What on gods green earth do you mean by "justify the existence of humane kind?" You are such a hateful individual. Homosexuality exists in nature, that's life. Just because you're uncomfortable doesn't mean it's wrong it just means you disagree. Many people say they don't serve a purpose in life because they can't procreate, but I think that's the point. God's answer to population control. Straight people populate and homosexuals aid in maintaining over crowding. There is a balance that must be kept. If you are so against them adopting because of the child's need of certain influences, where are your complaints about all these single mothers raising children alone. This is a post about a Black woman finding and treating early stage breast cancer, and the importance of other black women doing the same thing. As a survivor of the very same cancer Wanda had (diagnosed just one month before she was), I can tell you that cancer doesn't give a damn about your race, gender, age, socio-economic class or sexual orientation. LADIES (those of you with common sense), please get your mammograms (which is how I was diagnosed - before the age of 40), eat more plant-based foods, make sure your vitamin D level is normal, and hit the gym. I chose a lumpectomy over a mastectomy, but Wanda is very brave for making that choice. Take care of your bodies, ladies! It's the only one you've got!

Your writing is terrible. In fact, it's God awful. Instead of concentrating on gays and what you believe they should and should not do, you'd be better off taking a basic English class. Once you've mastered the basics of grammar, spelling, and subject/verb agreement, perhaps you'll be better able to articulate your misinformed and bigoted views. I have to respectfully disagree with you, as another black and gay, in my case, woman. I am a feminine woman, and I prefer feminine women, so I can pretty much go anywhere with a partner and still REMAIN in the closet. As a matter of fact, I get asked all the time when I am going to settle down with a nice guy. So, being black is by far the more significant part of my existence. No one should be denied their civil rights, and the pursuit of their happiness but comparing the continuing struggles of blacks to the gay rights movement is insane.

you say this from the closet like that supports your argument? I am not a femme and never have been. Just because it is easy for you to hide doesn't mean it is easy for the rest of us. That fact that you ARE hiding is the problem that exists for gay people. No it is not the "same". But when a gay person says "you should know I feel because you get discriminated against" they are not saying that they have had the 250 years of oppression and lack a history as a result. The pain that black people hold is not a result of today's discrimination but of the past. It is not a "comparison" as in a side by side we've both been wronged. I've never heard a gay person say "oh we have it worse" or "this is just like slavery." Discrimination is just as ugly whether it be because of race or because of sexual orientation. Don't Remain in the closet, some people could pass for white but they choose not too, most people could bleach their skin but they choose not to. Doing so would be the very antithesis of who they are. Why should you hide part of you, because its "easy" to do so (I don't think its that easy actually, at least not for me). If you would never "closet" the fact that you are black why would you "closet" the fact that you are gay?
