Jay-Z ANNOUNCES The "Brooklyn Nets" As Official Team Name, Says He Knows The Gender Of The Baby

Big announcements from hip-hop icon Jay-Z today as he revealed during a press conference that he will help christen the Barclays Center with a series of concerts, and that the New Jersey Nets will officially become known as the "Brooklyn Nets." Deets inside....

At a press conference held in NY earlier today, Jay-Z revealed,

“We named the New Jersey Nets the Brooklyn Nets."

Jay-Z, who is a part-owner of the franchise, toured the Barclays Center (the home of the Brooklyn Nets) for the first time earlier this morning, and added that he would help put the 18,000 seat arena on the map by performing eight concerts there in September 2012.

"We're going to open this arena right here with a concert. Maybe one, maybe two, maybe three ... I sound like LeBron," he joked.

Talking about how important the moment was to him, he added,

"From the moment the Barclays Center became a reality, I knew this meant something significant for Brooklyn. "This is where I'm from, I'll always be Brooklyn, and opening this arena will mean more to me than anywhere else. I also look forward to opening night for the Brooklyn Nets. We're going to create an atmosphere like only Brooklyn can."

After the press conference, he chatted with "Good Day New York,” where he talked about becoming a father saying,

“No, I’m not nervous. Everything’s great.”

And as far as the gender of the baby, he revealed that he and Bey know but,

“...I’m not gonna say, of course.”

He wears a suit and acts like he knows what he is talking about but he only owns .02% of the nets. Its a marketing ploy to not reveal the sex and to keep it a mystery like they kept their dating and marriage under wraps. Publicity 101- mystery always heightens and catapults you to bigger fame.

Jay-Z is part OWNER of the Brooklyn NETS. It makes 100% sense that he use his STAR POWER to generate interest in this project from the Community and ALSO serve to help raise funds for this project moving forward. I agree ONLY with the point that the pay he is getting is not on par with the STAKEHOLDERS but he does have a minority interest which is a big deal considering African Americans usually don't have that type of situation and this is a major NBA TEAM. Jay-Z can also use this opportunity to enrich himself as I'm sure the sales from the tickets will go to him for the most part and he can continue to have first dibs on concerts which will help his LIVE NATION deal. There is something wrong with your logic if you're implying that Jay-Z is some blunt tool because that is simply not the case. Jay-Z is learning more about WEALTH and building his portfolio and don't be surprised if he move up and soon becomes an OWNER of his own Sports Teams once he build up more capital. This is a progressive step so what are you trying to accomplish???? Stop trying to be so negative and support Jay-Z's growth.

Most of what you said is true, but the Nets are hardly a MAJOR NBA team--yet. Out of 30 NBA teams, I bet the Nets' revenue is in the bottom 10. Most high profile players don't want to play there, even with the close proximity to NYC. And please don't think Jay-Z is the first African American to own a piece of an NBA team...Usher owns a piece of the Cavaliers, for one.

As you just stated, "..he has the opportunity to enrich HIMSELF." That's great that he has minority interest in an NBA team, but AT WHAT COST???? Most people in Brooklyn are NOT happy about this arena, the pushing out of local residents and businesses, and the mayhem it has caused. What he is doing is no different from big white elite developers who see nothing but dollar signs, grab the land, and be damned at the people it affects. In my line of work, I see elderly and poor people being kicked out their neighborhoods and family businesses having to shut down in the name of "revitalization." So until you have witnessed or been a part of this unfair practice, you have no clue. As the bible says, "What good is it to gain the whole world but lose your soul."
