2012 SAG AWARD WINNER: Octavia Spencer RECEIVES Award for Best Supporting Actress In "The Help"

Earlier tonight, The Help actress Octavia Spencer took home the trophy for Best Supporting Actress.  Deets inside......

As the 2012 SAG Awards begins in LA at the Shrine Exposition Center, Octavia Spencer took home one of the first awards when she received the trophy for Best Supporting Actress for The Help.

The 41-year-old actress wore a gorgeous white and silver Tadashi frock on the red carpet.   And during her acceptance speech, she offered up a nod of acknowledgment to Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers.

Congrats Octavia!

Congrats Octavia, she did an excellent job. However, Hollywood need to be more diverse with black roles. Security, loud/obnoxious person, police officer, maid, athletic, singer is not the only role we know how to play. We can be versatile too. Although, it's good to tell some stories but Hollywood wants to keep us in that box of the same story of slavery, discrimination, angry black folks, enough of that. Whites vs black role. I want to see Sanaa Lathan, Gabrielle union maybe be the leading woman of a leading white actor. Most of these white actresses can't even act but they still get more roles because Hollywood favors them more. I'm just done with Hollywood, apart from them recycling the same stories, they are also TRASH.

This is why black people

This is why black people never get anywhere - instead of congratulating the woman more than half of the comments are fighting down her achievement - yes she played a maid, but her performance was great, she really did make that film and deserves the recognition she is getting. If she was a bad actress she would not have won anything! Maid role or not! Jews have suffered equal and more recent persecution than us black people - but the sheer difference between them and us is that they stick together - they support one another's businesses, they don't rob and shoot one another, or call each other derogatory names. They do NONE of that. I am not disputing that there is racist type casting in the film industry, but perhaps if we supported each other more, ACTUALLY WENT OUT TO SEE SOME OF THE BLACK PLAYS, SUPPORTING POR BLACK WRITERS, PLAYWRIGHTS, WELL MAYBE JUST MAYBE WE'D GET SOMEWHERE. But NO! Y'all rather go online and fight this woman down, and everything she has worked for. THATS WHY BLACK PEOPLE NEVER GET ANYWHERE

Wow. Loved the movie and

Wow. Loved the movie and Octavia's performance, however, she looks SO MUCH OLDER than 40 (she won't be 41 until May). She looks SO matronly, like Jennifer Hudson did when she won her Oscar. Full-figured women can look sexy! Marc Bouwer designs the hell out of a dress for full-figured women! Queen Latifah or Mo'Nique would NEVER wear a matronly dress like that! She is too young to look so old!

No, they need to keep playing

No, they need to keep playing them. There are stories that need to be told. The Help is an example of one of them. If you don't like them playing the roles, don't support it. For those of us who enjoy the films we will continue to embrace and support our Black brothers and sisters. We've come along way.
Ilovehousewives's picture

Yes, we've come a long

Yes, we've come a long way....now lets go to the movies to watch us play maids. SMH Please don't ever speak again. What stories need to be told? Hollywood has been telling the same damn maid stories since the crack of Moses. SIT DOWN MAMMY LOVER!
Anonymous's picture

If you thought the movie was

If you thought the movie was only about black people/women being maids you've failed to realize the substance of the STORY being told. Ignoring the reality of what black women went through to survive and take care of entire families is just silly small thinking and by recognizing it doesn’t belittle us. They (mammy’s, maids) were not images…they were real (not this story but the struggle for black maids, nanny’s…etc..etc…) just as real as the movies which depict the struggles of those who fought in the civil rights movement or slavery etc…etc…This movie is not a reflection on US (as black people). It is a reflection to people who thought this type treatment was acceptable or an insignificant matter to begin with. With that being said I didn't care for the movie myself, I also read the book; both were less than stellar BUT the performances were outstanding! And although I didn’t care for the book (writing wise), I appreciated that the story was told displayed the strength of black women (strong I must say). It made me really appreciate what they must have gone through. Having older black women in my family who were maids and nanny’s to “white folk” back in those days. I just have to say thank GOD for those who were before us because Lord knows I could not have dealt with that nonsense.

I find it FABULOUS that

I find it FABULOUS that African-American women are finally being recognized for being great actresses, and I'm glad that The Help told such a difficult story so well. It was not pretty or fun in any regard: but being maids/servants was a means of survival for so many of us. I remember my late Grandmother did 'Days' Work'; which was the equivalent of maid/housekeeping work...as the years wore on and The Civil Rights' Movement shook things up, she left that line of work and worked as an elevator operator at a local hospital. Then she was promoted and became the Supervisor of the hospital's mailroom; a job she retired form after 30 years of service. My mother became a teen-mom & that's how I got here. I did NOT become a teen mom, went to college and am now thriving. All of us in some way owe a debt to the people who literally SUFFERED and DIED for us to have opportunities; and I congratulate the women who told our stories in The Help.

My grandmother was a maid in

My grandmother was a maid in this time period and remained one until she retired. She did what she had to do to put my father through college so that he could have a better life than she did. She did what she had to do and I respect her for it. The Help tells her story and I am happy that it does. These are the people who fought in the trenches of the civil rights movement. Their story was just as important as any other inspirational black story; it should be told. As for why we don't receive awards for playing other rolls, it is about the ACTING. As much as I love the STORY that Red Tails told, the acting was sub par at best. If you are honest, you know I am telling the truth. I agree that there need to be more diverse rolls for African American actors, but why get upset when two of our best actresses do excellent jobs of playing positive characters who happen to be maids? Neither of them are maids in real life, so they are ACTING and they did great jobs of making their characters believable. That is why they are getting rewarded.
Alanco's picture

I agree. It amazes me that

I agree. It amazes me that black people get upset with positive stories about heroic women who through no fault of their own are maids in 1950's, but they support Jay-Z, Kanye and other music artists who make millions from white college kids by calling us n----, h---, and b----. That makes no sense. The Jews make 100 different holocaust movies a year to preserve their history and tell their stories. Our is getting lost or being interpreted by white/Jewish people.

Congratulations to Octavia

Congratulations to Octavia Spencer & Viola Davis on their SAG awards!!!!! Both were dressed beautifully, and gave wonderful acceptance speeches!

Congrats to Octavia Spencer

Congrats to Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis...but it is BITTERSWEET!!! Just 73 years ago when Hattie McDaniel was nominated and won an Oscar for protraying a housemaid. I believe that we are STILL being accepted in society ONLY in a certain CONSISTENT protrayal which is NOT COOL. JUST WAIT until next year (2013)... When we get nominations for Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" which is about the revenge of an African-American slave on his Caucasian former master. Our history is BEING written by Caucasian writers. (NO OFFENSE) African-American writers STAND UP!!! Once again...nominations for being an escaped prisoner, poverty-stricken, housemaid, abusive/drug addict, crooked police cops, pimps, drug dealers, vixens, showgirl/prostitute, obese, althetic, illiterate, gangsters, and sidekicks. Even though there are great previous Academy Award nominations but there is a NEED for more diversity. Overall, if you do not feel respected in society no matter what race or gender, do your research and do NOT buy the product because it is WRONG. **Above is my same post on another article. : )

I know a lot of people feel

I know a lot of people feel negatively about awards going to black actresses for playing maids, etc., but what we have to remember is that the women they portray were REAL women! They existed, they were here, and we owe them a hell of a lot of respect for what they went through. They sacrificed their dignity and sometimes their lives so that life could be different for the ones that followed. To sweep their lives under the rug because we think life's not "like that" anymore is a slap in the face. Congrats, Octavia, I'm proud of you and for you.

Wonderfully said. I think

Wonderfully said. I think folks are just frustrated that there are such few blacks nominated for/awarded these major awards, and when they are, the role tends to be a subservient one--however historically accurate, we have to question why the powers that be LOVE to give us accolades for these particular types of roles...it's this mindset we need to transform.

Umm, girl we already know all that. I think what must people are tired of is the fact that it keeps being rehashed over and over again and we as black people fall for it everytime and say it is our past. Well damn we know all that but when can we see something about positive black people that have done something in life? I'll wait.....

I think your last sentence

I think your last sentence show you missed the point. These women DID do something with their lives. They loved and raised multiple families and were the backbone of churches, communities and even the very civil rights movement. Just say you want to see highly educated and middle class black people. I found your comment dismissive and thoroughly condescending.

You're a hater, and very closed minded. Was anyone (white) complaining when Stanley Tucci won for playing a pedophile or Christoph Waltz when he played a Nazi; two VERY stereotypically white roles? They are roles that must be played that PORTRAYS REALITY! She's getting recognized for being an great actress, and shame on you for assuming that playing a maid comes easy for black women.
Anonymous's picture

@ Anonymous 9:16 Why would

@ Anonymous 9:16 Why would white people complain about that when there are unlimited roles for them to play? They don't have to play maids all the time because they have a variety of roles to choose from so there is nothing to complain about. Black people are always the maid or some other loud or underachieving character. Those are the only roles that we get recognized for playing. Sad but true
Anonymous's picture

But you're missing my point.

But you're missing my point. Rarely are the winners of Oscars without controversy. Most of the time, winners play pretty horrible or stereotypical roles (white or black). The winners win because they can play the role without making the role cliche. Octavia and Viola did just that.

FYI she is not being rewarded

FYI she is not being rewarded for being a shit pie making maid! She is being rewarded for her ability to illustrate the struggles maids of the era had to go through and sometimes the little things they did to get back at the people who treated them so terribly. She brought life to her character and I applaud her acting abilities. So in the great words of Minny “Eat my Shit”!
