Chicago's Male Urban Prep Academy Sending EACH Of Its GRADS Off To College...AGAIN!

Chicago's Urban Prep Academy (an all-male charter school) just pulled a THREE-PEAT announcing that ALL of their graduating seniors have been accepted into four-year colleges! Get the deets on this fabulous feat inside.....

Some folks have no faith in the educational system, but Urban Prep Academy on Chicago's south side must be doing something right. Once again, 100% of its 2012 graduating seniors are heading off to college in the fall. And by the way, this school is the only all-Black, all-male public prep school in Chicago!

This is the third year in a row that the school has achieved the feat thanks to hard working teachers, dedicated parents, and of course...the amazing students.

The school started with kids whose futures had been left for dead by their public schools: Only four percent of the school's incoming freshmen were reading at grade level when they arrived on campus.

Urban Prep CEO Tim King says the school is so successful because of dedication, saying:

"We devote time and energy to those students so that they understand they can do well and they can have success if they modify their behavior."

And don't assume this is just a fluke. 83 percent of Urban Prep's 2010 graduating class re-enrolled for a second year of college. Now this is good ish.

My first comment would not go through...humm wonder why. This is a great story but why did the author have to curse & use the word "ish". Do you have to be ghetto in everything! Some other young woman with no self respect is talking about her sex life with someone she met on a dating site! What does that have to do with this article, and these men making something out of their lives! Use some kind of self restraint & try to have a little bit of class.Some of these people posting comments are an embarrassment.

This is the first time I have been to this site, and the way this article is written & some of the comments are disgusting! These kids have made progress & the person who wrote this used the word "ish"! What is wrong with you! To make it even worse some young woman with no self respect is talking about meeting someone on a dating site & their sex life! You missed the biggest

You missed the biggest part...they were left for dead by the school system. that means they were the blackmales you are eluding to. Next, the dedication the new school gives them. if the school system ( which most of the blackmales you are refering to attend) offered the same kind of dedication and support....this school would not be needed!

God Bless those children and thier families. This is amazing. For all of those passing judgement on the school and it accomplishments GTFOH. Obviously, you are not raising any children today. Times have definitely gotten worst as it relates to education. The education system is more about $$$ than who actually cares for the students. My child is in the 6th grade and an honor student. If it were not for her father and I working together as a team she would be in the left behind stats. We are divorced but co-parent. But it is hard as HELL out here. Let's GOOOOOO CONGRATS TO THE STUDENTS, THEIR PARENTS, TEACHERS. LEADERSHIP, AND COMMUNITY FOR SUCCESS.

I think the black community

I think the black community harms itself by celebrating things like this with respect to black males. Graduating from high school should be the norm. Going on to college should be the norm. Being a black male with a career should be the norm. Being a real father should be the norm. The fact that a lot of black males don't do those things doesn't change the fact that they're societal norms and we need to hold ourselves to the same if not a higher standard as everyone else. We, as a community, offer praise for people that are simply taking care of business rather than those that are doing something exceptional and I worry that we're lowering the bar in the process. Re-defining the normal as exceptional can give people the impression that they've made it when the real bar is actually ten rungs higher. Save the celebration for the mountaintop...we've still got lots of work to do.

You have a chip on your

You have a chip on your shoulder and it is weighing you down. The small celebrations ARE the way for any male student that cannot read at grade level, to become a successful adult. This is not lowering any bar, to give praise when due! The standard you are holding up for all to see is one of perfection and no one can live up to that! If you haven't fallen off your pedestal yet, brace yourself. You are living in the clouds if you think that normal for you is normal for everyone else, no matter what race or ethnicity. To hold yourself to any higher standard than the rest of us humans, is to set yourself up for failure! Failure in getting some good points across, failure in carrying a lighter burden and failure to actually stay on the ladder to the mountaintop at all. The bar is getting raised for everyone! In this untimely transition of some going from haves to have-nots, and others getting on with their life, heads held high, regardless of what they have or don't have, the fact that these kids accomplished this is no small feat! I know because I teach in an urban middle school. I applaud the teachers and the drive they instilled in these students to keep going! No, you cannot take that away from them! You don't have that power! You see, it isn't about race, it is about a desire to overcome obstacles, not just complain about them, blame them, use them to lean on and stay put, -at the bottom of the educational landfill. It isn't about business or taking care of it. I trust that you will find the supportive love that must have gone missing in your growing days, to be so cold about success now... .

your argument is a little redundant... it seems like you have never built anything from the ground up. Anything, be it a business, a church, a family, or even a sculpture has small achivements before final success.. you celebrate any achievement as minute as it seems!! because those small things are what eventually get you to the top..at the end of the day THESE boys are going to college all of them!THEY have made it! lets congratulate them and encourage emulation and that way we will get to the "mountain-top" as you so put it.

Anon, I definitely agree with the underlining message you are saying here. But unfortunately statistically, business is NOT being taken care of. So if celebrating "small victories" is what it takes to get everyone else on the right path, then I have no problem with commending those individuals who are doing positive things and "taking care of business" as you say. It is alright to celebrate and simultaneously remind that there will be higher obstacles to face and harder conquests. Life is short, let us remember not to diminish "small victories."

This just proves once again that with the right school administration, committed teachers, professional mentors and students determined to learn and be successful that it can be done! How wonderful and inspirational for this to be happening in a community where there is much despair,many abandoned buildings,drugs,gangs and a high percentage of teen pregnancies.
