Black people need to learn the difference between culture and stereo type. If an Italian singer sang for the olive garden, or a chinese singer for panda express no big deal. When a black person sings about chicken there's something wrong? Personally, I refuse to eat fried chicken and watermelon in public, but that's just me. I'd be lying if I said I didn't like them, but I also don't want to perpetrate certain stereotypes. I remember while I was a grad student at Harvard, I went to a restaurant called John Harvard near campus in Harvard Square with 5 of my black friends. Once we were all seated, the waitress said, "I know what you guys want. We have GREAT fried chicken on the menu!" One of my friends said, "We'll only get the fried chicken if we can get red kool-aid and hog maws and chitlins on the side." The waitress just stared back at him totally clueless.. It really was a lesson for me. Here we were, 6 black Harvard students and the only redeeming quality this waitress though we possessed was a love of fried chicken. I had been to the same restaurant with white classmates several times in the past and we were never offered fried chicken to start. We have to elevate ourselves above stereotypes and teach these people that there is more to us than basketball, rap, and fried chicken. We're a discerning sophisticated demographic who DESERVES to be marketed to as such. Shame on Burger King and shame on Mary J for cashing the check!

I agree that if it were a no-name black person singing it wouldn't be a big deal, just like when no-names be singing and dancing and rapping and krumping and hopscotching in Mcdonalds, Churches and Popeyes commercials. But the difference is no-names of all races usually start at the bottom and go through some clownish embarrassing jobs. I mean look at the people in those SAFE AUTO and PROGRESSIVE commercials and those BAIL BONDS commercials, there's a lot of EMBARRASSING commercials among all races but HEY, that's the struggle of being a beginner, Mary is NOT at that level anymore and EVERY ONE ELSE had a nice "DREAMY" commercial. David Beckhams commercial is DELICIOUS, he was in a dream sequence and he looked TASTY. Jay Leno commercial is corny but it's arrogant and cool like a A-list celebrity commercial and Salma's was offensive to me, it's stereotypical but at least you can CLEARLY tell it's a character portrayal, a scripted skit. Mary's isn't dreamy, cool and it doesn't look like she's playing a role, reading a script, acting a part like Salma, it's looks like a REAL HOOD chicken testimony from the heart and soul of Mary, and BK is dead wrong for that. Again, EVERYBODY ELSE commercial is like a dream or a skit, while Mary is the only being portrayed as herself testifying for some fast food snack. It's just looked so stupid and out of character for Mary. Had she just been standing at the counter like David it would be a whole new story, had she been presented like a down- to-earth superstar stopping by BK after a performance that would have been a whole different story. But she was presented as a superstar she was presented as ghetto bird with some nasty hair. And honestly, it's not about a black person singing about chicken, because I just know had it been someone silly and fun like CeeLo doing it, it would have been great, but serious a$$ Mary J. Blige with her always stressed out facial expression is not the one to be doing comedic chicken commercials.
