SERIOUSLY? France BANS The Release OF "Think Like A Man" Over LACK OF DIVERSITY!

In a shocking move which some think is blatantly racist, France has decided to cancel the release of the major hit film  Think Like A Man -- due to the casts' alleged "lack of diversity."  Get the deets inside.....

Tim Story's blockbuster hit Think Like A Man has raked in over $73 million since its April 20th release.  But that means nothing to the french movie guild.

While tons of French films and films from any country are produced year after year with "Black characters" that can be counted on one hand (if at all), France has decided that Think Like A Man DOES NOT promote diversity and has been banned.  So the films with all white casts do promote diversity?

Majority of films starring majority black casts never make it overseas.  Because it is said that the people of those countries "will not relate and will not want to see that." This also affects how black and other ethnicity are perceived globally if there's never anything allowed to counteract negative stereotypes.   So how does it makes sense to ban a positive film starring a cast of minorities when the film could actually stimulate diversity in the future?  Global Voices offered an answer saying,

“Surprising as it may be, the answer lies in the fact that the film has an all-black cast. French cinema is often pointed at for not fairly displaying all components of the country’s multiethnic population. Although the recent success of the movie Les Intouchables, which earned French African actor Omar Sy the Cesar award for Best Actor in 2012, caused great pride and hope among French nationals from Africa and the Caribbean, it was not to be the turning point for a deep and lasting change.”

If it still doesn't make sense, French blog People Bo Kay added (translated), "The French state has had a sociopolitical strategy which favors interracial relationships rather than valuing communities. In the comedy ‘Think like a Man', the focus is on black couples."

So we're just ignoring the relationship between Gabrielle Union's character and "Turtle"/Jerry Ferrara?  This sounds like some ish they'd try in Hollywood.  It's interesting to note that France also bans the release of Tyler Perry flicks.

“Black actor and producer Tyler Perry’s movies are never scheduled in any French movie theaters or are only released in DVDs, even though he has been used to leading the US box-office, as with ‘Why did I get Married’ and ‘For Colored Girls’. The French society acts hypocritically, when it refuses to show movies from black producers who earn millions from conveying a positive message to the African diaspora through their films.”

Do you think the French are being racist in a reverse way?  Or do you agree with their explanation?

SPEAK ON IT!

Hey There people. I'm French

Hey There people. I'm French and discover this topic. It seems to be more a problem of "big money", there are no sociological analysis to do here. The problem seems to be the same than for the Spike Lee film's "Miracle at St. Anna". "France" the country doesn't censure, there's an independant organism that can eventually censure film, music.. There are no plots, you're just being manipulated. Peace.

Regardless of diversity this

Regardless of diversity this is still not right. This film does not have to be diverse to be shown in threaters. Even if it's a all black film. I go see all white films alllll the time and do not have a problem with it. When I went to see this film there was a diverse crowd in theatre and that made me smile because I heard everyone laughing. This was a funny and well thoughtout film. Its a shame that black films have to be diverse but white films only have to have one token black person in the film thats usually degarded to a sterotype. The people that mention president Obama.. Shut up.. The president does not have anything to do with this matter. Im tired of every time a "black issue" comes up people try to relate it to the president. So what we have an intelligent half African president and your point is exactly. Im going to continue to have an open mind and see great movies whether white or black and im pretty sure if I don't relate to it I will find a way to understand, like I always do. Racist out there find some medication to help yall cure that disease, it affects you more than it affects others. People need to wake up and the Blacks in Paris need to fight for whats right. Stuff like this is what makes me proud to be American... We have are problems to but the grass is not that much greener on the other side

It is true that there are

It is true that there are very few black people on french screens, but in the case of this movie they probably just watched their numbers and came to the conclusion that releasing the movie just wasn't a good deal. "Lack of diversity" just means "not enough money to make by attracting also the white audience". Believe me, if they thought that they could make a bunch of money from the movie they definitely would release it ! There is only one color movie producers like better than the others : it's dollar green.

Nice article if only true. Check your sources before writing stories around what happens to be a lie: France has never banned this film. Tip: all sources are not equal: info from Le Monde / NYT might be more truthful than info from an unknown blogger.

As a black French woman, I

As a black French woman, I speak for the entire Black community in France. We were all very disappointed and disgusted when we learned that the realease of the movie was banned. France is a country very hypocritical when it comes to this subject, they promote the melting polt and dont want to hear about community or race. For example it is forbidden to do statistics using data based on ethnicity. The difference between the Europe and the United States is that every Black people here, before being French, have a defined origin with a culture that's different from french white people. I was born and raised in the French culture but also in my parent's one. So the French state use this no-race/no-communatarism politic, in order to give us all the same white euro-identity. Yeah.. same game, different rules..

Where were the black couples or people in 'he's just not that into you'? I'll wait... Tis is beyond ubsurd
Love Jahh's picture

Uh, that movie was about one

Uh, that movie was about one relationship, one girls story. the title tells you that. Come better. Do you really not see the 'a'bsurdity in telling all women to think like man, but choosing a cast of all black women to do that out of the five 'different' relationships presented in the movie? Even the white comedian in the movie has black spouse (in real life). I know I'm not the only black person who watched that movie and felt the cast should have been more diverse for the message and content it was trying to put across. Felt like I was watching "For Colored Girls" by Tyler Perry. I haven't read this book, but it's hard to believe Steve was only talking to black women, so why would he take it from the pages to the big screen in that way? The answer has do with racism, "because of black pride", "because black actors don't get alot/enough work", etc. They could have diversified the cast for such a broad message concerning relationships as telling women to think like a man, but black folks feel entitled to be racist. Even if you think of a movie white folks have done that was as racist as 'think like man', I know you're smart enough to know that 2 wrongs don't make a right. Love Jones, Love and Basketball, and the movie with Wesley Nipes and Sanaa Lathan were all about relationships, or black relationships? Doesn't really matter (or it's hard to tell) since it was just about one relationship, does it? 'Think Like a Man' was blatantly racist, and its sad that black people are so racist and feel so entitled to be that they don't see it, or won't admit it.
Love Yah...there was no 'j' in alphabet's picture

So it'd an all black move, SO WHAT??? That gives them the right to ban it?! Smh. There's always a COON..

As much as I enjoyed the

As much as I enjoyed the movie, i totally understand where France is coming from. A movie about relationships focusing on black relationships was a bit low minded for people who should be above the stupidity of racism; but lets face it, the average black person is not over it. and this movie exposed that flaw very much so. Like it was telling only black women to think like man. Quite embarrassing when you think about it.
Observer....aka....Yep, I said it's picture

The movie was clearly focused

The movie was clearly focused on relationships (not black relationships). And those relationships just happened to be portrayed by black actors. all couples would be able to relate to this movie. so what you're saying is that its 'low minded' to only use black actors to portray these scenarios. BUT movies about relationships with all white actors are ok. what's embarrassing is your logic.
Anonymous's picture

They just happened to be

They just happened to be portrayed by black actors? What a coincidence! Are you serious. When someone wins the lottery, it's because they JUST HAPPENED to pick the winning numbers. This movie didn't JUST HAPPEN to be a cast of black actors, that factor was well thought out, and it's childish and embarrassing that you would even try that as a defense/argument. Everyone does not understand or relate to black people, and it was selfish and inconsiderate of the movie to assume that everyone would relate to such a diverse message about all relationships using an all black cast. Blacks have come a long way, but they are not the norm/majority. i guess the president being half black and married to a black women has made black people forget who and where they are, and whats fair and relatable. How was the movie clearly focused on relationships and not just black relationships when every relationship in the movie was about a black woman? If we're being honest, Steve was taking a shot at black women, telling them they are dumb ass her and trying to give them advice on dating a minority male, since that is what they are dead set on dating (black, mixed, red), and always jealous/mad when a black man dates outside his race. Notice the only white guy in the movie didn't have any issues in his relationship? and Gabriel Union's boyfriend puts you in the mind of the minority/hispanic/latin/indian, not a white guy, or just the worst/bottom of white guys (weed head, immature, playstation junkie, etc)...wigger. And to answer your question, movies about relationships with all white actors ARE ok. I know a lot of black people who love the movies about the bible (most important relationship EVER) with all white actors, i.e, "The Ten Commandments", "Moses", etc. Come better. Relationship are not about black and white, and this movie totally ignored that, foolishly and blatantly had no regard for it, and that's why France said that GTFOH with that obvious and blatant racist mess. Funny how black people defend racism when they're wearing it. "those relationships just happened to be portrayed by black actors." GTFOH. Do you really believe that crap? Do you really believe all of Tyler Perry's and Spike Lee's movie JUST HAPPENED to be portrayed black/minority actors? You don't think it's intentional, a motive/agenda behind it? Come on, at some point you people have to grow up and stop lying to yourselves and acting stupid trying to defend being racist. I said it once and I'll say it again, I felt like I was watching a lighter rendition of "For Colored Girls". Sad
Observer....aka....Yep, I said it's picture

You are obvious a white

You are obvious a white ignorant idiot, what the hell does the Ten Commandments Movie has to do with the self inflated pump up hype you just scripted. They could remove Eddie Murphy cartoon for displaying black clamation characters for drinking 40's On a corner in the hood, but Bart tells Marg ”shut up, what the fuck You stupid bitch” And it's still On prime time television x22 yrs. What an example for the white kids, but guess that's the reason for the junior Ted Bundys And Jeffrey Domer's no parental white guidance

Not surprised, I visited

Not surprised, I visited Paris last summer and was very disappointed at the blatant racism of white people toward blacks. It's funny bc France was touted as a safe haven for black artists in the past, but they definitely aren't welcoming to Blacks who identify with blackness, which is odd bc there is such a large African immigrant community there. I did see a lot of interracial couples and bi-racial people though, it is pretty sad that they don't support both interracial and all black positive relationships...

Racist mofos!France has many black people in their country, mostly from Africa and the Caribbeans. They are just as bad as they enslaved africans and colonized black people in Africa. European countries such as Belgium has a huge black population.I went there a couple of years ago and it was like little Africa over there. Black french people need to come together and fight to have black movies played in France and elsewhere in Europe. This bs needs to end arghh!
anti-racism's picture

It's true that in France

It's true that in France there is racist people. However, all people in France are not racist. It's true also that the people who control the comission which autorizes any movy to be released in theaters are 100% white members. Ask Mr Spike Lee about his movie Miracle In St Anna he can tell you about the first channel TV in France TFI who decide to promote the movie and it has never reach a single theater in France. Spike Lee sue them and won the case, TF1 appealed however they have to pay 10 Million Eur, the money will be kept by the court and if they lose their appeal it will be given to Mr Spike Lee's lawyer. Nobody can deny that our French society is conservative and does not promote at all minority like it's done in UK or USA. The movie industry here is controled by the same people or their affiliate for the last 30 years. Only one or two movies made by French black can reach a national level and be promoted in the major theaters. Our struggle has just started, the way will be long. However, we have some hopes and talented movies makers like Euzhan Palcy or some actress like France Zobda who are both from Martinique and they could not work properly in France it's why they went to USA and became famous. This is a daily fight, French overseas department population is 5% of the total population of France.
