HERE WE GO AGAIN! Online Petition To BOYCOTT "Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta" Hits The Net

A few of the 3.6 million viewers who watched the debut of "L&HH: Atlanta" were turned off by the foolywangery of the show's content...and have taken the usual next step after complaining.  They've started a petition to boycott it.  Deets inside....

First it was "Basketball Wives," and now VH1's latest docu-soap "Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta" has provoked an online petition to boycott the show.  The petition says,

After we made a ruckus about Basketball Wives, sponsors began to pull ads. Well, it’s that time again, folks!

While we should respect the perceptions and experiences of the men and women featured on “reality” television shows, networks are airing stories that could be very helpful for people to hear, but they’re telling these stories in EXTREMELY dangerous ways.

We all know premium digital crack rock is ‘slanged’ in digital hoods other than VH1. We also know the problem is not just TV–it’s a big, mean, social monster that we’ve gotta shoot down one non-violent bullet at a time. Nevertheless, somebody’s gotta be the face of this lovely movement. And since VH1 has chosen to give us yet another beautifully-blinged jewel of commercial exploitation (Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta), they might as well be the face of change. By the way, shout out to all African Americans who received Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta as their Juneteenth gift! You won and lost at the same time!

As we work toward national- and local-level change, let’s tell VH1 and their sponsors (again) why people from a broad range of backgrounds will NOT stand for the exploitation of the lived experiences of people who may not even know they’re being exploited. This isn’t a “Black or White” thing, this is a HUMAN thing…and we should all understand.

P.S. That “turn of the TV/your kids’ TV if you don’t want to watch” argument doesn’t work here, VH1. A good number of the kids who are most at risk don’t have the luxury of living with parents who can just “turn off the TV”. Why? Because their parents are out working multiple jobs (thanks to this lovely thing called poverty); one or both parents are on drugs, dead, or in jail; or they’re raised by ill grandparents, relatives who aren’t that interested in their future, or foster parents who abuse them and only foster to collect a check.

Meanwhile, Joseline Hernandez isn't letting comments about being a homewrecker OR being a man get her down.  She tweeted, "GM thanks 4 all the positive support as well as the negative the ratings were great!Starting my day off w/Marvin Sapp"Never would've made it"  REALLY!!??

Since the "BBW" petition did result in the loss of a few sponsors, it will be interesting to see if this petition catches on.  Y'all already know my view on this.  There will ALWAYS be a FEW million people out of the umpteen million in America who will constantly watch trainwrecks.  Does that mean we keep appealing to those few folks at the detriment of our teens and kids in our community who will be conditioned to think the actions they see are OK?

Sigh....here we go again.

The reason mess like this

The reason mess like this doesn't need to be on tv is because it showcases Black women and men in such an unflattering light. How many times are we going to be portrayed as ghetto birds, unwed baby mamas who do nothing but seek out a baller to finance their lifestyle while fighting, cursing and dropping it like it's hot?!! How many times are Black men going to be portrayed as doing NOTHING else but trying to have a rap career, being a baller, creating babies, wearing long chains, poppin bottles and calling women b***hes??!! The only people co-signing this FOOLISHNESS are the ones who are exactly how I just described. The women in MY family or who I hang around do not act like ANY of these women on these shows. Most are married with kids, some are not married and some have children out of wedlock but believe me when I tell you they are NOT in the streets acting a fool over a man. The men in my family (my husband, daddy, brothers, uncles, cousins, friends) have good jobs, are EXCELLENT husbands and fathers (not flawless but they do their best) and respect the women in their lives. It’s such a shame that a majority of women (at least the ones on THIS site who co-sign this crap) don’t seem to think/know men and women like this really do exist. I'm embarrassed that folks embrace this CRAP! TO ME...it's not entertainment....it's a disgrace. I can't wait until ALL these shows get cancelled.

This is in reponse to

This is in reponse to TINSHA's comment talking about the petitions are racist. Duh, chick WE ARE BLACK FOLKS THAT ARE DOING THE PETITIONS TO GET THIS KIND OF MESS PORTRAYING US IN A NEGATIVE HORRIBLE WAY. Duh, where have you been? Wendy Williams, a black woman, voiced her opinion on the air along with the rest of us regarding BBW. This Atlanta Love & Hip Hop is hot garbage and should be removed and not worth watching and will show our lil innocent girls that this is what life is about, arguing over and settling for lifestyles like this with loser men that are not worth losing your self-worth or self esteem over and being humiliated.

LET'S JUST BE CLEAR FOR A SECOND....WE ALL NOW THAT THESE 'REALITY' SHOWS ARE FAKE. SO WHY PETITION THE SHOW? IT'S FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY. PERIOD!!! THIS SHOW IS MORE LIKE A SOAP OPERA THAN ANYTHING ELSE. NO ONE IS GETTING HURT OR BULLIED. JUST THE FOOLISH STORIES WE'VE HEARD FROM SOMEONE IN AT LEAST ONE POINT IN OUR LIVES SHOWN ON SCREEN. LEAVE THE SHOW ALONE. IF ANYTHING GET @ MONA SCOTT-YOUNG FOR RUNNING WITH THE FOOLISHNESS RATHER THAN THE POSITIVE IMAGE SHE HAS CREATED FOR HER SELF, PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY,PRIOR TO DOING THESE TYPES OF SHOWS.

i don't agree with the last

i don't agree with the last paragraph about the children having parents on drugs, etc. because although i empathize with it...it's not my fault and the parents are responsible to sacrifice..you can't expect me to sacrifice because someone else isn't doing their parently duties! sorry. I have children too and work but there is always a responsible adult around that monitors facebook and tv shows. the world is too big and people have different taste and not everyone has the same moral compass as you! so no, back to the drawing board....how about you take all the kids and let 'em live with you and make sure they don't watch VH1?! hhmmmm seems like a bit much huh, well so is your expectation to run everyone else's viewing of shows!
tanyamichelle's picture

I FEEL SORRY FOR YOUR KIDS IF

I FEEL SORRY FOR YOUR KIDS IF YOU THINK A BABYSITTER OR ANY OTHER ADULT OTHER THAN "YOU" CAN MONITOR AND MANAGE YOUR KIDS CORRECTLY...KIDS LOOK UP TO YOU AS A PARENT...SO WHEN YOU SAY "RESPONSIBLE ADULT AROUND" YOU SOUND STUPID,.. YOUR DAUGHTER WILL BE PREGNANT AT 15 OR SON A GANG MEMBER IF YOUR THAT DUMN AND NIEVE!!!! . YOU CAN'T MONITOR A CHILD 24/7 IT SHOULD BE OFF OF TV....STUPID

Sorry not buying the whole

Sorry not buying the whole "P.S. That “turn of the TV/your kids’ TV if you don’t want to watch” argument doesn’t work here, VH1. A good number of the kids who are most at risk don’t have the luxury of living with parents who can just “turn off the TV”. Why? From a recent study (and who

From a recent study (and who do you think watches TV the MOST? Blacks!): Children’s self-esteem generally goes down as TV watching goes up. But white boys are the exception, according to a new study published in the journal Communications Research. Researchers from Indiana University surveyed close to 400 boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 12, of whom 59 percent were black, and slightly less than half white, to see if there was a correlation between time spent in front of the TV and children’s self-esteem. They tallied the amount of TV watched and had the participants complete an 11-item questionnaire intended to measure overall feelings of self-worth. The study authors said that while white male TV characters tend to hold positions of power in prestigious occupations, have a lot of education and beautiful wives, the TV roles of girls and women tend to be less positive and more one-dimensional. Female characters are often sexualized, and success is often measured according to how they look. Black men and boys are often criminalized on TV, the researchers said, which can affect their feelings of self-worth. According to the study, self-esteem has significant behavioral and emotional ramifications, and it is often correlated with motivation, persistence and academic achievement, particularly among children.

While this may not be the

While this may not be the best choice of TV programming, it certainly isnt the worst. Every damn show on TV does NOT consist of a role model. Im sorry that children arent being properly supervised but that doesnt mean that I should not be able to watch regular TV shows because of it. This boycott is some BS. There are soooooo many other things worthy of this action and a harmless TV show like L&HH: ATL is not it. #FAIL

One thing that is difficult

One thing that is difficult with debating on blogs is that you can be adult trying to reason with an uninformed child. Please stop saying that white people, etc. do not protest against or do not have petitions against shows such as Jersey Shore and Mob Wives. That is grossly inaccurate! Just like an immature person, many of you will make claims that are incorrect and its laughable to say that no one had a problem with Jersey shore. Are you serious?? Get it together!!
Stacey's picture

I think it's important to

I think it's important to point out that "Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta" received a combined viewership of 3.573 million people, which included 1.926 million people for the premiere episode and 1.647 million people for the repeat episode later that night. So, the 3.6 million viewers figure, which is rounded up, is not the number of people who watched one episode.

Hmm? So, this is supposedly

Hmm? So, this is supposedly in support of the black community, yet there is a "shout out to African-Americans????" Right. If only there was real support of the ENTIRE black community, then maybe real progress could be made. Being or claiming to be African American does not mean you're black. ie. Charlize Theron

I will say this, I will

I will say this, I will continue to watch this foolery as long as they air it because it's funny, it's completely different from how I live, etc but these idiots decide to make themselves look crazy so I'm down to watch it. It's all a money things nowadays......money money money!!!!

If you don't like the show.....just don't watch it! Why watch something just to complain!

Excuse me? Did you not see

Excuse me? Did you not see all of the bad press, the numerous sponsors that pulled out and the petitions for Jersey Shore and public outcry from that state and tourism. Are you living under a rock? Know about something before you talk about it. There were also numerous complaints and petitions against shows such as the Sopranos, etc. I know that many of you like to make points on here but make informative ones. This post alone shows that some of you have no idea what has been the overall backlash from the emergence of reality shows. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BEFORE YOU TRY TO PERSUADE!!

Here's the thing. The world

Here's the thing. The world won't respect Black folks until we respect ourselves...every time something ignorant featuring us hits the airwaves somebody rich and white gets paid. I'm not white so I could care less about Mob Wives...I care about the socio-economic, cultural and political survival of MY people...and I think we are hitting a crossroads. P.S. as a woman I feel like all these ignant shows are helping to undo social progress. Most reality shows depict women as desperate, stupid, shallow, materialistic and self-hating individuals who are willing to sacrifice self-love and integrity over a man. But we accept it...so who's to say?

I applaud the sensibility

I applaud the sensibility behind the boycott. Enough is enough... it's time to send a strong message to the industry. I pray that the same sensibility will be exihibited when it's time to vote on local, state and federal issues and for leadership, as well as stand up against violence in our communities. We have a voice and the power.

its not good entertainment

its not good entertainment tho, its a bad example being set for out youth, thinking its ok for black women to act as such. Example on bbw's reunion Evelyn shared with us that her stp-daughter had seen the episode where she threw the bottle she was imitating her and laghing about it thinking it was a joke. This stuff is serious, i can just imagine how the generation after us will act....wheres the petition i want to sign it!!!

People take some things a little too seriously. Its entertainment!! I'm in college & most of my friends are in college and we watch love & hip hop and basketball wives faithfully, because its entertainment! My friend works for the gov and most of his co workers are white & have never even heard of the show. So 4 the people talking about not getting jobs because of how ur "race is portrayed on tv" your fine trust me. I've met white people that have never even heard of Kelis. Black people are the audience for the show. And the people who are boycotting are just wasting their time.

Nothing depresses me more

Nothing depresses me more than not being able to let my kids listen to "urban" radio stations expect the grown folks oldie channels, not having any black TV shows my kids can see except maybe ANT Farm on Disney and those horrible Tyler Perry sitcoms... I mean what happened? There used to be so many good shows on TV the whole family could watch, and music your kids could hear, and now on the radio its all about money cash hoes and strippers or women singing about men cheating on them. Is that what we teach our kids life is? On TV, it's mostly trashy people doing trashy things, and these people are more than often ADULTS with CHILDREN! Young girls are all over the internet taking pictures with their asses to the camera, because they've been taught that's what they have to offer. A big booty. A ride or die chick with her man who has "swag". A college degree and a future is not a requirement in a man. Swag is. I don't know what is going on anymore. We've hit some kind of cultural bottom it seems like.
