OPRAH RECAP: Gabrielle Douglas ADMITS BULLYING & RACISM Nearly Made Her QUIT Gymnastics...And She HASN'T SPOKEN To Her Father!

Gold-medal winning gymnast Gabrielle Douglas gave a revealing interview on "Oprah's Next Chapter" where she admitted that she hasn't spoken to her father since the Olympics (because of her mother) and that she nearly quit the sport six months before the Olympics because of bullying.  Deets inside.....

Oprah Winfrey visited West Des Moines recently where she talked to Gabrielle Douglas, the first African American gymnast to win gold in the "All-Around" Olympic competition.  The duo visted the home were Gabrielle lived during her training and also the gym where she perfected her skills.  During the chat, she revealed that she nearly left the sport because she was bullied by teammates.  She also revealed her mother has prevented her from speaking to her military dad.  Here are the highlights:

On being bullied at her gym in Virginia:

I felt like I was bullied and isolated from the group, and they treated me not how they would treat the other teammates.....I was getting racist jokes. I was being isolated from the group. I’d come home at night and cry my eyes out because ‘What did I do to deserve this?'  One of my teammates was like, ‘Can you scrape the bar?’ and they were like, ‘Well why doesn’t Gabby do it? She’s our slave."

On fighting through the pain:

“I wanted everyone to know it’s still possible for anyone really. I wanted to make them know to never give up and always keep fighting, because though times may be tough, the sacrifices do pay off, so just keep pushing towards your dream and just love it at the same time and enjoy it.”

On contacting her father Sgt. Douglas:

“I don’t think it would be for the best" and “We’re kinda distant,” she said. She also revealed that her mother made her change her cell number so that her Dad has no way to reach her.

On the hair controversy:

She admits that the controversy hurt and she didn't learn about it until she looked herself up.  “I searched it, just to see what they were talking about. I put Gabby Douglas and then it first says ‘Gabby Douglas hair’ like the first one on Google.”

During the interview, Gabrielle’s mother, Natalie; her three siblings; and her coach, Liang Chow; all appear. Watch the video here:

I have lived in Virginia, and

I have lived in Virginia, and I will not doubt for one moment that this young woman has encountered some form of prejudice, stereotyping, and, or, blatant racism. Even in 2012, there are certain counties where Blacks are not welcomed and the people that live in those areas make it very well known. I'm talking Confederate flags, shotguns and pick-up trucks!

Regarding the interview w/

Regarding the interview w/ Oprah: Look at Ms. Douglas's body language- there are clear signs she was lying about the racist issue. Her eyes shift, her voice increases and she starts to talk faster. You may have to watch the interview several times, bc Oprah's ppl have edited in a way to "trick" viewers. Trust me when I tell you that her mom was lying too. Ms. Douglas is milking her 15 mins of fame for endorsements & cash. Her USA team-mates have reportedly given her the frosty shoulder since her remarks on Oprah. Why you wonder? B/C they are afraid Gabby will say something of the same about them. Very very bad move Ms. Douglas. Hire a publicist asap.

Gabby is a young woman who

Gabby is a young woman who has made significant contributions to the sport of gymnastics like no other African-American has. What could she possibly garner from speaking publicly about the alleged racism that she has encountered? Remember this is a sport in which there are not many (Black) persons like her. The topic in and of itself is sensitive in nature, and perhaps it touches a sore spot, even with her greatest of achievements. Being THAT GOOD often comes with a price! While most of the world places such great pressure upon her, it is important to remember that she is still a child. Her teammates have absolutely no reason to feel threatened by anything she says, IF they, themselves, are truly supportive of, not only Gabby, but one another.

For much of the last several

For much of the last several years, Douglas, who has done three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, has made do with YouTube videos of his daughter’s routines as he served with the 203rd Red Horse civil engineering squadron, either in Virginia Beach or in Kandahar. "I just had to pray to God just to keep him safe and tell the angels to keep my dad safe and come home," she told NBC. Even if Sgt. Douglas couldn’t see Gabby win the gold in person, the surprise visit to the trials, which marked the first time he’d seen her in nearly two years, resulted in a joyful reunion. Douglas held up an American flag with "Go Gabby Douglas, Love, Dad" on the front and his daughter had no idea he was in the crowd. "I'm like, 'Who's calling my name?' And then I look up,” she told the Des Moines Register. “It was my dad and his friend, and I haven't seen him in a while," Gabby said later. "They were holding up the flag. And I almost felt like bawling. I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, Dad!" "I just missed her so much," Timothy Douglas told the paper. "It's just so thrilling what's going on." As her father no doubt watched from afar and Gabby took her place atop the podium, her own feelings of national pride were stoked.

Brothers save your children

Brothers save your children from these evil woman By any means necessary.

PLEASE LEAVE THE SUBJECT ABOUT HER HAIR ALONE! The interview I thought was a bit short, but Kelsee Grammar weird ass got an entire hour! WTF?!?! But as the saying goes "if you weren't there during my struggle, don't be present during my success" and her mom is not having that ish! He can keep that military money. But at some point I do hope for Gabrielle's sake they regain connnection because there's nothing like a father's love. He should set a high standard for her future just as any father should for their daughter. But unfortunately there are a lot of fathers who just don't get it. If you don't want kids next time use a condom.

i live in barbados we all

i live in barbados we all have that hair what is the big deal

I missed the interview last

I missed the interview last night, but what kind of hilbilly rednecks was Gabby training witb back in VA?? It's unfortunate her dad isn't in her life but I'm sure he's kicking himself in the a$$ now! I don't even think Gabby should have discussed the hair comments but you know "Ms. Desperate For Her O" was gonna bring it up smh.

I love this young girl, she

I love this young girl, she did GREAT! However, her hair was a little off, so what, it is what it is and we all know it her mother just confirmed it. Of course, we don't know what's up with the husband/dad, but it doesn't sound good that you'd keep him away from his daughter..unless he's abusive in some way. Why does a 16 yr old need weave anyway ((sigh))...it has nothing to do with her skills, we know this.

Hello Everyone! I'm I the

Hello Everyone! I'm I the only one heard her say on ET tonight that he abandoned the family. He has not spoke w/ his daughter or tried to see her in 2yrs. Gabby's mom was in debt because he did not contribute to any of the Family Finance. They broke her moms BILLS down on NATIONAL TV due to the fact this man did not do his part and left them in DEBT! Her Dentist bill to her Gymnastic bills were all left on the moms shoulders. Not to mention she had to refinance her house which she almost lost and filing twice for bankruptcy. So now that she is famous he deserves to be in her spotlight! No Way! Where was he when they needed him? Exactly! No where to be found. Gabby is 16yrs old if she really wanted to talk to her dad she could. Perhaps somewhere down the line she will reconnect w/ him but this is not the time. He is not worthy to be around her and the people that got her where she is today. A white man from Iowa let her in his home he was her father figure for 2 yrs and gave her the support and encouragement that her real dad did not provide. You people kill me! Give her the time she needs to deal w/ him. For now she should celebrate and surrround herself w/ people who SUPPORTED HER emotionally to financially and in all of the other supportive ways she needed to become the champion she is today. Like so many dads whose child has become famous. The Dads miss out and are not included because they were not there thru the struggle. So why should they be included when success comes? Like so many other dads that want to come around now that the storm his over but never provided the safety and support while enduring the storm. Like I said he is UNWORTHY to be a part of her all her hard work and success!

Yes we black people were the

Yes we black people were the first to comment blog on her hair....And yes there were many saying her hair was OK...The truth is the truth..As far as her father that is between them we don't know the real deal....Money changes everything. As far as the bullying and racist comments Gabby can say HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW!

Oprah's fat ass gets on my

Oprah's fat ass gets on my last nerve, cause Gabby made it clear that she didn't wanna talk about the hair situation anymore, but her chunky ass continued to press the issue, and you can tell that she was eager to put the focus on BLACK WOMEN. Even though they spoke a little about something else, you can tell that she really wanted that interview just to talk about the hair, I mean as short as that interview was, the bitch could've called her and asked her how she felt about it, but she wanted to televise it and put the focus on ignorant black people. The interview was so purposeless. There were many black women cheering her on and left countless numbers of positive responses but they chose to focus on the negative as they always do. I thought the comments were pretty ignorant myself, but lets not act fresh out the box and act like you don't know how this hair shit got started in our community in the first place.

@Ms Thangfrothe... You are so

@Ms Thangfrothe... You are so right about Oprah. I tried to be supportive of her but I can't w/ her. Like you said so many people were cheering for Gabby all races especially black women. In the attempt to save her BAD O Network Ms. O has become more MESSY in recent times and will do any and everything to get RATINGS! This interview was way too short and seemed rushed to do because she needed something to follow up the Rih interview! Why not give her an hour like the Rih and Kelsey Grammer interview? Oh what really got me was the fact that Messy O wanted to harp on the hair thing more than the bullying race issue. Someone saying you are a slave to your face is clearly worse than people talking about your hair over the internet! Messy O wanted so bad to keep focusing on black women and how the black community are like grabs in the bucket. Yes at times that is the case but she clearly wanted to stir up trouble w/ her comments. I mentioned to my family during the Olympics that she could have used a perm but that was that and I did not blog about it. Oprah did not want to stay on the topic about her being called a slave in Vir Beach saying she don't like playing the race card. Oprah clearly has some issues about black women in particular and is harbouring issues from the past about being talked about in her earlier years. When I see more hate and contempt for her on a daily basis from whites. They are the ones wishing and talking about seeing her network fail. I see in in blogs all the time. They want her to just disappear. I don't wish Messy O any harm concerning her network but she needs to tread lightly w/ some of the comments she makes and stop being in denial about who her true enemies are!

She had to deal with the crakkas/white ridicule probably her whole damn lifeeee!!But you don't want to talk about that because them racist ass liberal white women mite not support you anymore.

That's a part of good

That's a part of good journalism. It's all about asking the tough questions and not holding back. It's not like she was maliciously trying to hurt her feelings, but it was important as a good thorough journalist to ask about something that got a lot of media attention. And as much as you may want to ignore ignorant black women who brought up her hair, the reality is that a majority of the people talking about it WERE black women. You can't hide from that. Yes, there were a lot of people supporting Gabby, but there were people hating on her hair too which to people who don't know about black hair issues was confusing and baffling.
Sarcastic Chick.'s picture

When I said what I said, it

When I said what I said, it was not about hiding or ignoring the ignorance of what those black women said, it was to express my irritation about the way Oprah went about it. You are right, good journalism is asking tough questions, but it felt like she got pleasure out of putting the focus on it and I know i'm not the only one that felt like that.
Ms.Thangfromthe5thflr's picture

I wonder what the deal is

I wonder what the deal is between mom and dad that her mom would rather her not speak to her father. I really hope its coming from a place of genuine concern for her well being and nothing personal or vicious. Its never cool to separate a daughter and father unless he is molesting the child or some other form of abuse. Outside of that, she should step aside and let Gabby make that decision. On another note....love her grandfather! Great to see such s supportive family behind her. With them, she can't lose!

How about if he's deadbeat

How about if he's deadbeat and is now trying to come around to cash in? I wouldn't want him around either.

Now black women , i got a

Now black women , i got a question I THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY HOOD WOMEN THAT TRIES TO KEEP THEIR CHILD FROM HEARING FROM THEIR FATHER?? But according to little Gabby Douglas who grew up around white girls have went against the grain and told the truth about you black women "her mother made her change her cell number so that her Dad has no way to reach her." Why do you black women do this to your children??Why do you treat good men and fathers as if they don't matter to their children??Why do you get mad when dude walk out on their responsibility and don't pay child support, but don't like when he's around because you don't want the father to have any type of influence in his childs life. Why black women ??WHY DO YOU TRY TO MANIPULATE YOUR KIDS?? ALOT OF BLACK WOMEN IN GENERAL DO THIS HOOD OR NOTT!! I've notice this shit myself, and i tell yall about it all the time BUT BLACK WOMEN ACT AS IF THIS SHIT ISN'T HAPPENING WITH THEM.
LetsGetIt's picture

"Good men and fathers?"

"Good men and fathers?" Girl, have a SEAT! Dude abandoned his family and Gabby's mom had to hold everything down solo. She risked her own financial security to give Gabby a shot at the Olympics and since the investment paid off, NOW Dude wants to come back and be a father? Hell Naw! If you were gone before, stay gone now. He's just trying to cash in on this girl's success and her mom is protecting her like she should!
DesignDiva's picture

Get the fuck out of here

Get the fuck out of here BLACK WOMAN!!! If you know anything about the military , you not going to be in that bitch and not INVEST some type of money in your children LIVES. THEY DON'T PLAY THAT SHIT!!!Any type of money you get IT'S STRAIGHT TO THE CHILDREN FIRST!! This man is the reason why she got MILITARY FUNDING for hey gymnastics. Know what the hell you're talking about before speaking SILLY ASS BLACK WOMAN. This woman just didn't want the father in the picture and whites including oprah LOVE TO TELL A STORY ABOUT A BLACK MAN NOT BEING IN THE LIVES OF THEIR CHILDREN and this black woman ran with it like most.!!!
LetsGetIt's picture

Sending a check to put some

Sending a check to put some food on the table and buy some clothes does NOT mean he was supporting her gymnastics career. If it was just about putting food on the table, Gabby's MOM could have done that herself. She almost went bankrupt paying for coaches, gym fees, travel fees, equipment fees, etc. Gabby's father didn't contribute ONE CENT to those expenses. Gymnastics is a VERY expensive sport and that's why you don't see a lot of people of color in it. Even Gabby says he abandoned their family and stopped talking to her WELL BEFORE the gymnastics trials.
DesignDiva's picture

I was pretty disturbed to

I was pretty disturbed to hear that her mother keeps her away from her father, but we really have no idea why that is... I totally disagree with using kids as a pawn in a battle between mother and father. i think that is the worst most selfish thing a mother can do. I think that there may be something else going on that would cause her mother to do that and for her to admit that her mother is keeping her away from TV alludes to the fact that there could be serious personal issues that they just aren't gonna talk about on TV... Who knows, he could be abusive or something? I think I read that he was in the military, so I don't think it's for money because he's not some bum trying to mooch... No matter what though, I still think it's pretty disturbing that he couldn't even speak to his own daughter to congratulate her. That's pretty sad.
Sarcastic Chick.'s picture

Most of the time it's just

Most of the time it's just black women being selfish, and i mean most of the time they do it to Good brothas. I don't know why, but they don't want a GOOD BLACK MAN to have influence on their kids lives. They want to be the ones manipulating their children to go against a father that is trying to do GOOD by his children. I'VE SEEN IT ALL THE TIME!
LetsGetIt's picture

I've seen it done to a friend

I've seen it done to a friend of mine who was a great dad... I didn't know his daughter's mom like that but I thought she was an idiot and evil for doing that... I saw how hurt he was and I just couldn't understand why someone would do that to a man who cares about and takes care of his child. Yet a few years later the dumb chick got pregnant by him again... Now I think they're both stupid.
Sarcastic Chick.'s picture

I agree but I think you also

I agree but I think you also need to know what the reason is behind it

Tell me the reasons behind it

Tell me the reasons behind it sista. Because most black men i see this happening to are good brothas, THE THUGS DON'T HAVE THIS HAPPENING TO THEM WITH BLACK WOMEN. But tell me why sista

Mommy versus daddy is

Mommy versus daddy is messy....

Is it me or does anyone else

Is it me or does anyone else feel like this interview should have been longer than 13 minutes? I mean Oprah did a special with the Kardashians and it was 2 parts...why couldn't she interview the whole team? Also, Oprah kept bringing up the hair topic after Gabby mentioned that she doesn't focus on the negative. Why continue to talk about it when she stated that it doesnt matter?

Because Oprah has decided to

Because Oprah has decided to do anything for ratings. Kim Kardashian was an all time low. If she interviews Evelyn Lozada I'M DONE.

I honestly can't say that I

I honestly can't say that I blame her mother for limiting Gabby's contact with her father. Dude's timing is really suspect. Now all of a sudden that Gabby's worth millions in future endorsements, you want to be involved?!? Where were you when her mom was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to keep her in the sport? Now all of a sudden he figures out how to use a phone? GTFOH!!
DesignDiva's picture

Great interview. I just think

Great interview. I just think that her mother needs to really step out of the way and let her have a relationship with her father. It sounded like something that she did to satisfy her mother. When NBC did an interview with her after she won, she stated how her father and a friend came to see her compete when she qualified for the olympics. She said that she almost lost it and became so emotional when she realized that he was the one who kept screaming her name out while she was competing. She said how happy it make her that he came to see her. Maybe her mother need to watch that interview and reconsider her views on the situation.

The black racist are worse

The black racist are worse than the white ones!! Its the black folk that are criticizing a teenagers hair when we ALL got nappy hair(until fake ass weaves and chemicals to look like white folk) Dont you idiots know that you are uncle tom, house niggs to be screaming such idiocy?? And for her mom to brainwash her from seeing her father is some more slave mentality ish!! Black people.....WAKE DA FUCK UP!!!!
