The new show’s lead star Cuba Gooding Jr. showed up at the premiere looking dapper in a black suit.

While chatting with reporters at the event, the Oscar winner weighed in on the lack of diversity in today's films vs. diversity in television. He said, “You look at our project, ‘The People v. O.J. Simpson,’ it’s the Rainbow Coalition. Until we get to a place where films are being told from the perspectives of Native and First Americans, Asians and African Americans, we’re only going to, as members, have a limited pool to choose from for nominations.”

Cuba also said, had he been invited to this year's Academy Awards, he would attend to show support to Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs and the new changes.

Oscar nominated director John Singleton, who helms a few episodes on the upcoming drama, also weighed in on the diversity controversy. He said,

“The whole concept of race has been upended on a general level, but systematically it hasn’t. Systematically, they’re saying, ‘You’re this. You’re this. You’re this.’ But the people, especially the last generation or two, they’ve upended that.”
