It looks like we will finally see Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone in the upcoming biopic about the late singer's life. The cover art was just released and we have the official date it will hit theaters. Also, Vanessa Williams has signed on to star in Star Jones’ new series “Satan’s Sisters.” Get it all inside…
Oh, so they're going forward with this afterall?
The masses will now get to see Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone in an upcoming biopic about the legendary singer/activist’s life. The Internet lost its collective mind when it was leaked back in 2012 that Zoe Saldana (of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent) would be playing the late singer. One of the most vocal critics was Nina Simone's daughter, Simone, who revealed that she had been completely shut out of the movie and had no involvement at all.
During an interview in 2013, Zoe responded to the criticism saying,
”What kept me from getting stressed and being hurt by the negative comments is that I’m doing it for my sisters and my brothers and I don’t care who tells me I’m not this or I’m not that. I know who I am and I know what Nina Simone means to me.”
“I did it all for love. Out of love for Nina, my people and who I am and my pride of being a Black woman and a Latina woman and an American woman. That’s my truth.”
Since all of the controversy, the Nina biopic sort of vanished. We didn’t hear much about it. Since then, an incredible documentary aired on Netflix called What Happened, Miss Simone (that Nina’s daughter backed and starred in) that was nominated for an Oscar this year.
Now, the official cover art (above) and release date for the Nina biopic have surfaced. It will hit theaters on April 22nd. SELMA star David Oyelowo also stars in the film where he will play Nina’s assistant Clifton Henderson.
Below is a synopsis (via press release):
She was one of the century's most extraordinary talents, a 15-time Grammy nominee and Grammy Hall of Fame Recipient; her mesmerizing songs and passionate politics combined to make her the unforgettable Nina Simone (Zoe Saldana). But fame and fortune came with a price, and her later years were riddled with depression, alcohol abuse and isolation. Rediscovering the meaning of her life and work took courage, strength and one true friend: Clifton Henderson (David Oyelowo), the man who started out as her assistant and eventually became her loyal manager. With Clifton's encouragement, the "high priestess of soul" began a courageous journey back to her music ... and, eventually, herself.

In other movie news...
We told you Star Jones was turning her book “Satan’s Sisters” into a TV series. And now a big name has been attached for the lead role.
Tony, Grammy, and Emmy nominated singer/actress Vanessa Williams has nabbed the lead role in the upcoming VH1 scripted series “Satan’s Sisters.”
According to the press release, the series is set in the bright lights of daytime television as the fireworks start every weekday at noon when the hosts of "The Lunch Hour" -- a long-running popular TV talk show -- discuss life, love, family, politics, and gossip.
Vanessa will play Maxine, the creator and host of “The Lunch Hour;” a formidable, powerful, and decisive woman, but fears she's being put out to pasture. Sound familiar? The series will focus on Maxine and her co-hosts, five women with very different points of view, who are best friends and sisters...while they're on TV. But behind the scenes, they are “Satan's Sisters” -- a backstage world filled with power struggles, personal demons, diva fits, love affairs, man troubles, cat fights...and cocktails.
We're intrigued. And we hope Vanessa brings some of that Wilhelmina Slater edge into this.
Talk show host Wendy Williams was once attached to the series, but we didn’t see her listed under producers. Legendary film and music executive Suzanne de Passe is still attached to the project. We can expect its premiere in 2017.
Will you be tuning in?
