Solange & Mary J. Blige Offer Up Words All Women Need To Hear Right Now At Billboard’s Women In Music Awards + Kelly Rowland, Ciara, Taraji & More Pull Up

If we ever needed some girl power vibes, it’s now. The entertainment industry has been hit hard with sexual assault allegations. So, Billboard’s Women In Music event held at The Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center was much needed and appreciated. That’s right. It was a night to celebrate and recognize all of the women in the industry who have made significant contributions to the game and who continue inspire young entertainers coming behind them.

2017 has been a good year for Solange. And before it wraps up, it gets even sweeter. The blonde bombshell was awarded the Impact Award for her activist efforts on issues like racism and cultural appropriation.

During her acceptance speech, she shared, “I grew up in this industry and I have heard women being told they were not talented enough, or smart enough, or sexy enough, or cool enough, and just not good enough and that became the industry standard. I’m so proud and excited to see artists rejecting those standards and tearing those walls down. It’s a new goddamn day and I’m loving it.”

And look at her now. The 31-year-old singer won a Grammy for her track "Cranes In The Sky," a track from her album, A Seat At The Table.

“Empire” star Tarji P. Henson, rocking Schiaparelli Couture, presented her friend with the Icon Award. The Queen of Hip Hop Soul opened up about how important sisterhood is and how we as women need to have each other’s backs.

“This has not been an easy fight but I’m a fighter,” she said holding back tears. “I’m here and I’m going to keep on fighting for every woman out there who does not know how to get out.”

R&B singer Ciara, draped in a custom Vera Wang ensemble, was tapped to host this year’s women empowerment night. The hot mom offered up some inspirational words to the ladies in the building.

"We can do anything if we surround ourselves with people who not only love but respect us," she said. "Tonight, I ask all of us as daughters, mothers, and sisters to rededicate ourselves to speaking up and speaking out on the issues that unite us as women. We must use our voices so that the next generation faces less sexism, less body-shaming, and let it be said loud and clear, less harassment.”

Nick Cannon awarded newcomer Kehlani with the Rule Breaker Award. Not only did she cop an award, she also performed her new track “Honey.”

"I'm so stoked to put this on my desk," Kehlani said before revealing her long-standing connection to Nick. "He's literally the reason I'm here right now," she recalled how he told her if she finished high school he would let her record at his studio in Los Angeles and help set her up with an apartment. "This is my guardian angel," she said.
