Just an observation but….Looking at those b-ball players with their light skinned girlfriends only confirms my theory of African Americans having the color complex. The light skin thing is such a complex issue; but it has gotten better. The images in the media help to perpetuate old ideas of what’s acceptable black beauty; but we have come far. We have to accept our light skin brothas and sistas cause it’s not their fault that they benefit in some ways from being a lighter hue. Dark to Brown skin sistas such as myself used to get that funny feeling when seeing yet another high-paid brother with his trophy piece. But as I matured..I realized that it can’t be all that great to be light skin because you’ll always have people questioning your character, your motives and you’ll always have black people threatening whether your blackness is really real. Hell…I even had a friend say to me that “all light skin women are weak.” Now ain’t that a trip. I have learn to love my darkness and I wear it proud. When I love me…the world tends to love me back.

I knew the color issue would come up. I couldn’t help but notice too but, don’t make assumptions. I know on this blog awhile back there was a pic of Paul Pierce with another girl and she was a very beautiful brown-skinned woman. However, I’m not naive. We are conditioned as black people to think “white is right” and to some black people, the lighter you are, the more attractive. There are some men who make it and choose a girl just cuz she is light with curly hair. To them that is the “cream of the crop.” This has been going on for a long time, it’s nothing new. Hi everyone!
I really commend your comment and the mentioning of the study involving African American children who actually pick white dolls over black dolls (I think the figure was about 90 percent) when given the choice. I think one of the first things we should do is capture and congratulate the variety of blackness, (which this blog does very well, might I add) and continue to push the issue that ALL black skin is beautiful, light or dark, and generally learn to accept and embrace each other. The war that commences between women of color (and I do mean black women) perpetuates the idea that there is a difference in our beauty. Instead of highlighting the differences, appreciate those differences and spread the word. A lot of the ideals of beauty come from confidence and appreciation. If we (as proud DARK SKINNED women) learn to steadily embrace our color and pick each other up, including our sisters of a lighter hue, we will reap the benefits of real beauty which is INNER beauty. As far as the men are concerned, unfortunately, they are usually sheep, and follow whatever is popular (especially men in the limelight) so consider that you wouldn’t want a man who isn’t capable of appreciating different types of beauty on his own terms, rather than emulating a white man or his fellow basketball/football players. Never base beauty on a man’s/society’s perspective, base it on your own understanding. Love and Peace.

I can’t even express how sick and tired I am of people responding with the “hater” comment whenever someone states their OPINION. Remember opinions are like assholes, everyones got one. I know that comment wasn’t made toward me directly, however I do feel the need to speak up on my behalf because I was the first one to make a comment about the “NBA Players”.
When I looked at the picture of Paul and his wife, the first thought that came to mind was, “Wow she’s really pretty.” Moving on… After seeing Kevin and Ray, I’m like okkk is this some sort of trend? Their wives all look similar. Which lead me to ask the question was it mandatory to have pretty light skin chicks on their arms?? Not one brown chick was in sight. And to be honest I can actually only think of one bball player (Dwayne Wade) who was married to an average brown skin sister. It’s just funny because I bet before their baller status, they were probably dating women of color, and as soon as they get on… well you know the rest.
Those woman are undeniably beautiful but the similarites not only from those photos but from seeing other wives of bball players made me wonder.
It’s sad that dark skinned woman won’t ever be accepted in “HOLLYWOOD” or even in the black community (yes we as Blacks still discriminate), but trust their are men who love us chocolate sisters. So I’m not bitter. Nor “hating”. Just curious…

tonya you are right. in society, light skin has always been considered “prettier”… but i think the root of the problem stems from black people themselves… it’s none other than black people who keep claiming light skinned women as being beautiful black women. for example, halle berry is known as one of the prettiest black women. however, she is HALF WHITE, yet the black community loves to claim her black side. it is black people who continue to believe that being “mixed” is prettier (aka good hair, light skin, etc).. it’s a shame that society has this mindset, but black people created this mindset and continue to perpetuate it.

The comments about the NBA players choices were in poor taste. I am a Nia Long’s complexion and I feel that people can date who that want. If a guy feel that a light skinned woman means that he has arrived then so be it. Who is to say that they will be treated well. To all the ladies that feel that you are missing out on something because you have to get up everyday and work hard while these women seem to go to parties and shop all day. Think about this you do not know what goes on behind closed doors. If you want to meet ball players go to the games looking really good and sit in the good seats. Go with a friend and smile while making eye contact. The best chance is while in school with them. Ask yourself would you rather struggle to pay bills with a nice regular guy or be alone while a baller is on the road and not struggle. I would rather a regular guy.

Reading through the blog I cannot get over all the comments on the women NBA players choose to date. All the women pictured are beautiful women. I feel that women who sit around and write negative remarks are only jealous and the comments that black men with money switch over to other races, think about it if they have to sit around and listen to all this bickering I dont blame them. Why are black women so negative, argumentive and insecure? Do you feel that you cannot look as good as a light skinned woman? Stop hating and pick yourself up, I congratulate Pierce, Allen and Garnett for having such beautiful wives/companions at least they do not have to listen to an angry, whinny black woman! Listen to yourselves its a wonder any black man would want to stay in their own race.
