Say That Ish: Morgan Freeman No Likey Black History Month+Spike Lee Says He’s “Poor”
Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is “ridiculous.” Here’s what he had to say about it in a “60 Minutes” interview airing on Sunday:
“You’re going to relegate my history to a month? I don’t want a black history month. Black history is American history…I am going to stop calling you a white man and I’m going to ask you to stop calling me a black man.”
Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson’s Negro History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated — when black history would become fundamental to American history.
Morgan also said there is no “white history month” and says the only way to get rid of racism is to “stop talking about it. He also believes the labels “black” and “white” are an obstacle to beating racism. So his newish relationship with his white girlfriend he supposedly left his wife of 24 years for is his way of showing he’s colorblind? I’ll keep my comments to myself on this one.
In other news, Page Six reported yesterday that Spike Lee told Britain’s Sunday Observer, that despite a Manhattan townhouse, Martha’s Vineyard home and kids in private school, he is not wealthy:
He told me he had always intended his kids to go, as he did, to state schools. “But my wife put the kibosh on that,” he said. Lee balks at being described as wealthy. “It’s not rich rich,” he told me. “Rich is Spielberg. Lucas. Gates. Steve Jobs. Jay-Z! Bruce Springsteen. I’m not complaining. But that’s money. Will Smith. Oprah Winfrey - that’s a ton of money. Compared to them, I’m on welfare!”
Um, ok Spikey. I guess “wealth” is relative.

W/E, I like the idea of black history month because it at least allows the public FOOL system to focus on some positive aspect of blackness. Since most black kids are stuck in those hell holes, let them feel good about themlsevles for 28 days. If he PERSONALLY does not want to be seen as “black” then he shouldn’t exploit his blackness for things like winning undeserving academy awards and other honors. He has made a career off playing the magical negro but he doesn’t want to be a negro? LOL. It’s so funny how people want to pick and choose.
Spike Lee, no one cares if you aren’t ballin’ like Oprah. Try making a decent film that people actually want to see and stop guilt-tripping black people for not supporting all the crap you have made since the 90’s.

I think that black history should be apart of american history. but after taking a world history class from a black perspective i know that will never happened. there was 2 much knowledge in that class that would be left out if put together.

I’ve been saying that integration was the worst thing that happend to us…
I feel we werent prepared as a race to integrate.. we still was trying to figure out who we were as a people!!! We had only been free for like 100 years or so…If we would have gotten our own COMMUNITY together and STRONG…we wouldnt have let all this happen to us. WE were so concerned about having what the white man has that we lost ourselves in the process!!!

This goes as far back as slavery. The kings and queens of Africa were not tricked, they sold the ones who where essentially “Useless” in their society and that is where slavery started. I feel we werent prepared as a race to integrate.. we still was trying to figure out who we were as a people!!! We had only been free for like 100 years or so…If we would have gotten our own COMMUNITY together and STRONG…we wouldnt have let all this happen to us. WE were so concerned about having what the white man has that we lost ourselves in the process!!!
And the white man knew exactly what was gonna happen when they allowed us to integrate…

Thats why I prefered Malcolm to Martin. I respect MLK…I really do but it seems that the Civil Rights movement had those specific demonstrations for the public to have “pity” for us. Dont give my my rights b/c you pity me, give me my damn rights because as a human I deserve it!
Plus I like the fact that Malcolm was like, “if you dont want to give us a decent school, screw you…we will make one our damn self!” Same way with businesses, etc. Im from the south and the mentality is the same way…waiting on some white man to give them something. Um No. I highly disagree. If we had “SEPARATE BUT EQUAL” We would not have what we have today, because it wasn’t truly SEPARATE BUT EQUAL. It was SEPARATE AND UNEQUAL. We would def not have Obama in office and to tell you the truth, the people who would be fighting the war would be solely minorities. The game will be different okay. As far as integration goes, I think it was the best thing that could’ve happened to our race in my opinion.

What if the white man had enough balls to give us everything they had in their communities..equal schooling , equal jobs, equal pay etc…then there would have been no need to integrate with them. Thus we would have been able to strengthen our own community without losing our integrity..

In the end Malcom was for unity. After he made the pilgrimage and saw all of those races come together he kind of had a change of heart as far as Whiteman this & White man that, buthe was still for the Black people, but he knew he needed to broaden he views a little more when it came to other race. He changed and they didn’t like that so they assassinated him.
In the End Blacks just don’t know how to stick together. We are haters of our ownself and it’s sad.

Ok maybe its just me but what do people do to celebrate black history month (i know there is lil events) but if you dont want to take part in any black history festivities DONT! I feel we werent prepared as a race to integrate.. we still was trying to figure out who we were as a people!!! We had only been free for like 100 years or so…If we would have gotten our own COMMUNITY together and STRONG…we wouldnt have let all this happen to us. Yup, sometimes it angers me soooo much how some of my people can be but I choose not to even think about it. I’m just so proud of Obama and his family, Michelle is gunna be the first African American/black first lady in the white house! That makes me soooo proud!

Very true. However, Malcolm was always for “Getting ourselves together first…uniting within the black community first” We skipped that critical step and never been united as black folks ever since.

The main factor was the damn man driving the freakin station wagon off of the street onto the sidewalk hitting the lil boy who was riding his bike. I’ve been trained for this shit all my life, girl when I left kindergarten I can still remember my dad continuing my “education” until 7:30 when my mom got home. He made sure my eyes were open way before I had any idea what I was learning

We need to start with the schools. I think our children should be segregated until they reach high school to start off. We need our own schools to teach them when that happens though. The white man (yeah morgan I said it) will NEVER give your child the tools he needs to succeed him. It will never happen that’s why we need to teach our own. Fuck the public school systems, we need our own curriculum to right these wrongs. See this is where I am now. I’m trying to figure out what to exactly let my boys know now. They still kinda in that stage of not realizing the differences between races. Like if you way White they dont get that. And dont call them black cuz they think they’re light brown. So yesterday I was reading them a book about Barack Obama but when they asked me why everyone was so happy and I tried to explain that he will be the first black President, or the first person his color to be preseident they were kinda lost. LOL I was like I’ll have to hold off on the real details till they get a lil older.

I agree with you 100%. You have many who don’t want to better their lives. My husband has 2 nephews and both of them have two kids and they’re unemployed. My husband called to talk to them about joining the military or doing something with their lives in order to provide for their kids. They said,”I rather lay around the house all day than to go to the Army or work at McDonald’s.” Guess what, they’re still Laying Up!!!

I agree. When I was at the gym this morning there was an entire segment on the news about how high the black on black crime was in Houston itself. If I heard correctly, I thought she said Houston was leading that category out of all cities in America. Thats sad. I couldnt help but feel disappointed in us because all the idiotic things we do are multiplied, in my opinion, to discredit us as a race. No one will ever take us seriously because we wear our pants under our asses, sport colored weave, are drug dealers, abuse the system, umemployed, uneducated etc. It doesnt matter that this may be going on in other races but what folks dont realize is Black folks have to work two times harder than any other race. I absolutely HATE the stereotypes associated with our race. I dont think racism will ever “go away” but we HAVE to start sticking together.

Although I feel like Black History is American History and should be incorporated into history lessons EVERYday, it’s still good to take the time to really focus on the accomplishments of our people. Because please believe that if we got rid of Black History Month, there would be NO Black History taught in schools. What I am sick of is Black History being limited to MLK Jr, Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, and Rosa Parks. Ok, we know alllllll about them now. There’s so much of our history getting left out. I understand what I AM ME is saying, but if we took our children out of school to teach them ONLY about our history..then how will that help them at that job interview at that law firm.. There are some parents who are very educated and can teach their children how to be doctor’s and thangs, but what about that single mom that has not even a GED… Would that be fair to her?

I think that people should look at Obama as an inspiration. Look at all he’s been through in his life and how far he’s come. No, he’s not God, but I do believe that he has the opportunity to show Black people that it’s ok to be smart and successful and care about your community.

Who said only about our history, I’m talking the whole curriculum read riting and rithmatic. The kids spend most of their day in school so everything plays a part the environment what they eat for lunch I’m talking our own school system we have the resources to do it.

Black history needs to be added to every U.S. high school’s curriculm. It should be a required course..just like World History, American History, Mexican History (we had that in Texas)
