Afternoon Swexy: Sessilee Lopez

Supermodel Sessilee Lopez is best known for being one of the four cover models of ’08s famed Vogue Italia “Black Issue”. And now she’s rocking the pages of Latina magazine and talking about the rumors of her being Kanye West’s new chick and other ish.

Sessilee On Kanye West:
“Me and Kanye are just friends,” she says, for the record. “He’s a great guy. I’m attracted to the way he thinks. It’s a great quality to be creative and not be afraid to voice that.”
Sessilee On Working with Tyra Banks:
“I was like a sponge when I worked with her,” Lopez says. “She told me, ‘You have to let the public as well as the fashion world know who you are.’
More pics and tidbits that Sessilee told the mag when you read the rest…

Sessilee On Modeling:
“Modeling is such a competitive business,” Lopez says. “Some girls get territorial; others get stressed out and start doing drugs to keep the weight off. I don’t want to mention any names, but I was once shoved onto the runway in one of my early shows; another time, an older model had the photographer fire me from a shoot just because I spoke to her. It’s comical, but we do sometimes have beefs to the point of sabotage. I suppose it’s because some models don’t realize that they can’t be the hot girl of the moment forever. I was partying hard and got a big head. I just thought, ‘It’s always going to be like this.’ I didn’t realize I wasn’t being as consistent as the other girls.”
Sessilee On being a Dominican model:
“Fashion is very black and white,” she says. “It doesn’t pay attention to heritage much. They don’t see me as a Dominican girl. They just see the color of my skin. It can be hard, because it’s your heritage and you want to be appreciated for it, but it’s just modeling, so I don’t let it get to me.
Swexy chick indeed.

First, the Dominican is a place, not a race.
Second, many blacks of a non african influence due to slavery (French, British, Spanish).

Look at our President, Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Tiger Woods, hell we all know they are of mixed race but they are profoundly identified as Black whether they like it or not (Tiger). It is what it is and people need to get over it.

Race is not synonymous with ethnicity. Black simply refers color. The terms we assign to different ‘races’ have become very cliche and we use them incorrectly.
Therefore, both statements really don’t make sense…Dominicans can be black, yes, because some Dominicans can be dark. If we want to be technical, this girl is Black simply because of her skin color (which is what she was saying). But the point of her statement was to say that her culture is not acknowledged and/or appreciated…just because her skin is dark does not mean that she shares the same culture as someone from Jamaica whose skin is dark, someone from America whose skin is dark, or someone from Beliz whose skin is dark.
Essentially, can we all trace that ‘color’ back to Africa? Yes, but because of colonization, we all are of different cultures and ethnicities, period.

The ethnic composition of the Dominican population is 73% mixed race, 16% White and 11% Black.[1] The mixed population is a racial mixture of black, white, and to an extent, Taíno heritage.[12] The country’s population includes a large Haitian minority. A smaller, yet significant presence of East Asians (primarily ethnic Chinese and Japanese) can be found throughout the population. Other ethnic groups in the country include Middle Easterners — primarily Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinians — Germans, Italians, Portuguese, Irish, Corsicans, French, and Americans.

Look I don’t care what you call yourself, but when they try to deny that small (usually large) % of African that is in them then that’s sad. Adriana Lima who is Brazilian even makes it know that she is part African descent. Now SHE doesn’t have to say so cuz she could PASS!!! But I’ve came across TOO many Dominican’s who will tell you they are Taino Indian and Spanish. Not black at all. GTFOH!!
When you come here to the US, you think they see you as WHITE??? Please if Obama is mixed and THEY are calling him the first African American President instead of mixed race then Dominicans are in no way different.
And for the LOVE OF GOD stop CLAIMING SPAIN!! Yall so many generations removed from that (slavery) and REAL SPAINIARDS AIN’T CHECKIN FOR YALL! They speak CASTILLIAN Spanish. Comprende?

But most “blacks” in the Diaspora are mixed (i.e. slavery). That is why people feel the term is an unifying and accurate description of the community.

Especially when you are blessed with more melanin, having a darker complexion as a PR or DR or Cuban, its like wake up where do you think you get the color of your skin from??? Its from your AFRICAN ROOTs just like Black folks. Some are soooo ashamed to admit their Africaness, it sad just like JUELZ’s comment about how her grandparents were from Spain.(Que LASTIMA!!!!!!) I think people in the USA see only two colors - black and white. In fact, in other parts of the world you would rather called yourself Japanese, German, English than black/white (nationality and ethnicity is more important). Maybe, that’s why she feels Dominican first, then black because she works as a model. I can understand her. It’s like in France there are lots of black soccer players and some say that they aren’t French, but African = black - and not white French. In my opinion, they are still French and that’s how I’d rather see and appreciate them.

You know what? I completely agree with you! 100% So many people want to be able to say that they are NOT black when it is completely obvious that they have AFRICAN roots. This Jamaican female (let me not get into the discussion of people saying they are Jamaican, Trini, etc. when they were born in Brooklyn and have never been to the country..you’re American but I digress) told me up and down that she was not black she was West Indian. Like c’mom ya self hate is soooo sooo sad!

White ppl -desendants of Spain or whateva, Blacks- Decendants of African Slaves (YES there was Slavery), Indians, and some who are mixed. Secondly she Black is not = to African- American. I am Black , but my heritage is St Lucian. Yes i am proud to be black , I know we are decendants of African slaves we were taught that in school and in the yard. But i am a proud Lucian.
I agree. My mother is from Trinidad and I lived in Trinidad for a year but I was raised the US and I don’t even consider myself west indian, but my heritage definitely is west indian. There are some African Americans who don’t consider west indians, afro latinos etc. black either which is also ignorant. Another thing I hate is when west indians love to say well there are so many different races in the west indies and the black people are so mixed. It’s not true. There are mixed people in the west indies but most are all black.

I wasn’t there and dont know ur exact conversation, but I know alot of West Indians, myself included, who was born in America to TWO WEST INDIAN parents and African Americans wants us to consider myself African-American. No I am West Indian. Thats my culture. I am Black thats my race. My parents are St Lucian, how can i be African-American. African-Americans are decendants of slaves directly from Africa to America. St Lucian are descendants of Slaves from Africa to America. And our history took different paths. My parents taught me my heritage. I speak English and Creole. I love my west indian foods. So i’m black, or St Lucian- American, or West Indian. no one is saying they’re not black. Deal with it.

They were lazy and decided they could go around the world and ‘discover’ shit that already existed and go capture darker complected ppl to build shit up for them. In the process, a lot of fucking went on..Europeans fucked Africans, Africans fucked Native Americans/Indians, etc. As a result, theres a shit load of countries in this world, all inhabited by groups of ppl who are decendants of ppl from various countries and cultures. The ppl from these big countries and cultures meshed and formed a bunch of smaller countries with new blended cultures. As a result, most people in this world are a mixture of some shit. PERIOD. We all come from different countries and have different cultures and this is what makes us unique. EMBRACE IT AND MOVE THE HELL ON!

Y’all not making any sense. The girl is interviewing for Latina magazine - they aren’t interested in hearing about her African American roots. IT’S LATINA MAGAZINE, duh.
If Essence was interviewing her then she can talk about being black. She wasn’t denying being black at all, obviously she’s on the cover of the Vogue Black Issue. At least she knows where some of her family is from.
White people don’t say they are white, they say, “I’m Irish and Italian” or “Italian and Sicilian” but not white. WHY? Because they know where they’re family came from. They don’t deny one-side or the other, which was the purpose of slavery anyway to get black people to forget where they came from. That’s how you’re brainwashed - forgetting or not knowing where you came from. If you come from Africa - GREAT! If some of your family came from Africa and some from Puerto Rico - then you part Puerto Rican and African - maybe more of one than the other.
If this girl couldn’t speak any English and just got off the boat - you’d say, “Oh she’s Dominican.” But she came straight out of West Philly and she knows she’s black, but she’s also knows where her ENTIRE family comes from.

I am the same complexion as Sensilee and my hair is straight without any perms or relaxer, and Im one of those who although is darker in complexion gets the what are you. St Lucian are descendants of Slaves from Africa to America. And our history took different paths. My parents taught me my heritage. I speak English and Creole. I love my west indian foods.
And, if you loved black people so much you wouldn’t be protesting so profusely not to be classified as one…
OnFeb 4, 2009 at 5:05 pm (Quote) | Reply |
The White Spaniards developed a classification in Puerto Rican and Dominican history that carrys over to this day. That’s why you will find Puerto Ricans and Dominicans who are very self-concious about their color. They look up to Spain when the Spaniards would only consider them people descended from the days of slavery. The majority of people in Dominica are mulatto, a combination of white/black. Unfortunately the black reminds them of their ancestors African slavery, not the conquering Spaniards.

What the hell is a Latin race anyway, it doesn’t exists. Not all the countries in South America speak Spanish and they don’t all have the same culture either. the culture of Peru is different from the culture of Bolivia and that differs from Argentina. So it’s all an attempt to lump everyone from that part of the world into the same category but it does not fit. In Brazil, where half of the country is Pardo(mixed African and European), there only connection to the rest of South America is their geography. Their culture is a blending of Europe and Africa, and the people are proud of it. It is because they have a better understanding and acceptance of their roots.

A lot of latin people do have african roots, but they don’t acknowledge it. This girl just happens to have dark skin, but u can be black and have light skin, without claiming to be something else. Look at the African American community. We have light skinned people in our group that don’t claim to be white or whatever.I heard that the self hate in latin people were strong esecially when it comes to being black. U shouldn’t haft to look like a typical black person to be considered black. I’m glad this girl want people to consider her Dominican heritage as well as her black heritage, but at the same time it’s sad that many people in the latin community probably don’t acknowledge her because she looks black and if they do acknowledge her it’s because of her success.
Naima from Top Model, she has latin roots and she’s light skinned but I don’t recall her being on the cover of Latina magazine. Why? because she’s black. Jaslene made the cover, and both of these girls won. The magazine’s website blog someone said that Beyonce wouldn’t have been on the cover if she wasn’t light skinned and some said the magazine should promote real Afo latinos instead of people like beyonce. LaLa from MTV was interveiwed and someone said aren’t u mixed or something and she said no, I’m 100% Puerto Rican. She looks black to me but u can be black and a Puerto Rican etc. But people only see 1 aspect of what a hispanic person looks like. They don’t all look like J.lo, Enrique Iglesias, and Shakira, but these are the kinds of faces that are represented and seen as Latin people.
J.lo, Enrique Iglesias, and Shakira and other sterotypical looking latinos could be black as well (not saying they are) because like i’ve stated before, look at the black comm. I know people who have the same skin as these people and they are not hispanic, white, or mixed they are BLACK. I think that black hispanic people like Sessilee, wether light or dark, that are not ashamed of their blackness should speak out about what’s going on in their comm and the self hate that some of their fellow latinos have.

Black is a color but it doesn’t always denote a race. It is an American thing. I am the same color as Mariah Carey and when I describe myself as Black to a Puerto Rican or Dominican they are always surprised about it. Black people all over the world have different heritages from the countries they are from, it just means their heritage is different not their color.

Isn’t Puerto Rico a caribbean country? People from slave holding histories always have issues. In Latin America not all Hispanics/Latinos are created equal. Blanquito. Lots of self-loathing amongst this group of people with the dark-skinned ones still licking the boots and longing to be accepted by the white-skinned. In Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo, the wealth and power is still in the hands of the white-skinned. And the Black & brown are left with nothing but sports. They need a cultural revolution to disperse with their self-hate. They have a slavery ancestry just like the African Americans, but Black Americans have a more positive perspective of their roots than they do on Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo.
OnFeb 4, 2009 at 5:43 pm (Quote) | Reply |
I’m Dominican and I agree with what most are saying: Latin/Hispanic people def have race issues. YOu can be black and be from anywhere in the world. On the islands there is def a mix of races, biggest ones being Taino, African and Spanish. Some are darker than others and what not. So you can be of any race, or a mix of races and be hispanic. Now whats ironic to me is that everyone up in here saying that Dominicans, PR’s and blah blah are black are perhaps the same people who calls us “Spanish” which that in itself is wrong cuz Spanish would indicate we are from Spain. I call myself Dominican of mixed race cuz thats what I am. If someone calls me Black great someone calls me White ok (altho i’d say im more Black) cuz essentially im EVERYTHING anyway. But NO ONE who sees me on the street says im a Black girl they say im “spanish” which really annoys the F outta me lol
OnFeb 4, 2009 at 5:49 pm (Quote) | Reply |
I think it would help explain things if people would stop thinking that Black automatically mean African-American, because it doesn’t. Jamaicans culture is not the same as African-American culture, nor is the culture of the Afro-Cuban the same as African-American culture, though they share the same coloring. And yes, the Black people of Santo Domingo, or the Mulatto people, need to have their own empowering movement to stop them from being so in love with the very people who oppressed them. It’s sad really.
OnFeb 4, 2009 at 5:53 pm (Quote) | Reply |
The only Spanish people are the ones from Spain. People on those islands speak the Spanish language but they are not Spanish. Just ask a real Spaniard and see. I know, it is stupid to call people Spanish just because they speak the language. I speak German but I am not German.

People talking about the “Latin race” need to enroll in Biology 101. There is no such thing. People from Latin America share a broad “Latino” culture, true, but just like people from the United States, who share a broad “North American” culture with (primarily) Canadians, or people from the UK who share a broad “European” culture with other Europeans, they can be of any race.
Thus, you have black Latinos, like Afro-Cubans, who are part of the broader Latino culture. You have Afro-Europeans, such as the Cape Verdean French and Black British. Then you have Afro-Caribbeans like Jamaicans and Afro-Trinidadians, Black Africans, and finally African Americans/Canadians. Although they are primarily influenced by the dominant culture (Latino, North American/Western, European, Caribbean), all of these people are black.
So when you say Dominicans and other Afro-Latinos can’t be “black” you are denying the very large black population that live in these areas. You are trying to erase their history and culture.
There is a long history of colorism and hate for people who look black, have kinky hair or a broad nose, unfortunately. Saying that someone is “black” is calling them ugly or disgusting. It’s no wonder why so many Dominicans and other black people around the world try to erase the African from their heritage. They’ve been told their entire lives that it’s ugly.
Dominicans were actually taught in school that they were descendants of white Spaniards, and had no African Ancestry. They were then instructed to look down on Haitians because they were taught to believe Haitians only had African blood, and that being black was bad. This means that darker skinned Dominicans are thought to be Haitian, even though they are Dominican and are descendants of Africans who settled in or were brought to the Dominican Republic.
It’s really quite sad.

People have different view on what black is…if you ask somebody in the states if their black their gonna think your talking about being “african american”. If your Dominican your of MIXED RACE. Which means your not predominantly black or spaniard. My mom is a white dominican and my father is a dark skinned dominican. I dont claim to be black or spaniard. I claim BOTH EQUALLY. Neither is better than the other…
P.S.- People need to just accept the fact that Dominicans are extremely proud of their Heritage. Where gonna rep our culture above everything else wether it be skin color or hair type. Our latin flair, rice and beans, plantains, baseball & merengue comes FIRST. JUST ACCEPT IT AND MOVE ON.

Dominican is NOT a Race but a country. In Dominican Republic however , there are many different races. Okay, I have an issue and maybe you can help me. Why is it when a white person is from South Africa, they always say South African instead of just African? As if South Africa is its own continent? I wonder if Black South Africans call themselves that as well or are they simply African. Hmm…
are you….serious?? South Africa is a country…you know…the one Nelson Mandela helped gain independence?
omg….y’all are so dumb

Dominican is DEF not black…I’m Dominican and my roots don’t trace back to Africa, not that I have a problem on if they did…My great grandmother and grandfather come from Spain…If u didnt know Spain owned that territory first…
Race is not synonymous with ethnicity.
If we must go THERE. DR was originally a part of HAITI. The people we now view as Hatian are descendants of the slaves that were quartered to that side of the island. It is all the same island. Now they are trying to quarter off another piece of HAITI and call it something else to bring more tourists.
People need to realize that we are all 1, and most cultures have a lot of black/African blood. People that call them selves Latino/a are a mixture of all the slaves, captives and capturers; a rela melting pot!
Africa is the birth land of the world, and when the Anglos traveled around the world they dragged the Africans with them to work, and we spread our love with them and all of the “natives”.
GET OVER IT!

No one is telling you that you can’t be multiracial or biracial or just “Dominican”. Who cares what you personally identify as. I don’t. Of course you’re going to have a “Latin flair”. DUH, you’re Latino. But denying that Dominicans have no connection to Africa is outrageous.
When you dance merengue, it’s a European dance. But the drums and merengue music are influenced by African drums and musical rhythm. Rice is not native to the Caribbean. It actually came with blacks and black slaves from Africa. Baseball was introduced to the Caribbean and Latin America from people from the United States, including African Americans.
I’m just saying–Dominicans have a unique culture that they should be proud of. But you need to be proud of ALL of your culture, not just the things you think aren’t influenced by Africans.
