BET Exec Stephen Hill says that this weekend’s awards will be heavily focused on Michael Jackson and his legacy:
“This will be a show heavy on Michael Jackson’s memory. I think what you’re going to find is that acceptance speeches for awards will have nothing to do about the artists themselves, but about the influence that Michael Jackson had on them,” Hill said Thursday in a phone interview from Los Angeles.
“A show like this takes a good six months to put together, so when something happens three days before, it’s going to be done fueled by emotions,” he said.
Hill said many of the celebrities who will appear on the show — including Beyonce, Wyclef Jean, Maxwell and Ne-Yo — contacted BET to see how they could help prepare a tribute.
“Within minutes after its happening, we had calls from different artists — all asking what can they do” and how could they pay tribute to Jackson, he said.
The NAACP issued the following statement in response to the death of Michael Jackson:
“Michael Jackson’s dedication to humanitarian issues, including helping to raise untold millions of dollars to alleviate poverty and hunger, showed us that he understood how to use his fame to advocate for equality and freedom worldwide. Michael’s compassion and vision for a better world, which he so clearly expressed in his music, will be part of his ongoing legacy,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous.
In the African American tradition of the great song and dance men Michael’s incomparable, talent and creativity influenced music, dance and culture for decades. His love of soul, rhythm and blues, and rock & roll, all performed with his innovative unique style captured the hearts and imagination of generations of fans.
“NAACP Image Award winning, international superstar, Michael Jackson was a musical artist rooted in the proud tradition of black American music. His career — from the working-class neighborhoods of Gary, Indiana, to the heights of the entertainment industry — is a classic example of the American Dream. Michael Jackson, and the talented Jackson family, represented pride and promise to generations of Americans and people around the globe,” concluded Jealous.
The coroner has reported that there is no indication of foul play. They cannot determine cause of death until toxicology reports come back.

When will this pain go away? :(
Fri, June 26, 2009 7:20 PM
Ciara, Rihanna, Beyonce Better do something. They all are hevily influenced by Micheal. Beyonce should do “ILL BE THERE” i think her vocals will touch us all. Rihanna should do “PLEASE DONT STOP THE MUSIC” and mix it with more micheal. Ciara should no “HUMAN NATURE” he soft vocal in the song would be angel like

Fri, June 26, 2009 7:28 PM
so sad, beautiful song..he will be missed!!!!!!!!!!!
Fri, June 26, 2009 7:38 PM
That kind of sucks. I know that many artists and people in general were touched and heavily inspired and influenced by his music but I was actually looking forward to the BET Awards. Now every single aspect of the show will be about him, some will of you will say well it should be rightfully so. However it will get repeditive and annoying with every artist trying to out do the other with their own personal tributes. I respect his music and his talents but the show isn’t going to be the same now, which is dissapointing.

I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT YOU MADE THE LOVE OF MUSIC MEAN TO ME
…I CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS HAS ACTUALLY HAPPENED OR, AM ABLE TO FATHOM THIS FACT.
PEACE BE WITH US ALL… :(
Fri, June 26, 2009 7:47 PM
they didn’t say ever single aspect…they said heavily focused..
im sure people are gonna perform their own thing..and then a segment of the show will be all michael as well as the acceptance speeches will be focused on thanking michael
Fri, June 26, 2009 7:48 PM
I agree with you…that would be really cool.
I also think, after that, the male artists who he’s influenced should do something then they all can join together.
I know BET will put something amazing together.
I still can’t believe this is happening…who would’ve thought…The King of Music is gone. But that’s life I guess. It can go when u least expect it.
Fri, June 26, 2009 7:49 PM
I am still in a state of shock. Complete and utter shock. I feel like I am in some sort of haze that i cant get out of. This is the first time I opened my laptop to check email today>>just can manage to go to any media outlets or really much of anything. I keep on thinking he will show up at the BET Awards….and this is some sort of full blown out joke. I asked my husband this morning, ” was it a dream?” and he replied, “No baby, it wasn’t” I subsequently went back to bed.
I’m not like this normally when a celebrity kicks the bucket>>I’m like: ‘oh that’s too bad’ -or-’hope his/her estate is in order’
And I keep it movin’….this is completely different>> its like when loved one dies, dare I say it parent or a child. This is gonna take me some to time process, digest>whatever…its gonna take me some time to get over this and accept he’s gone.
Fri, June 26, 2009 7:54 PM
I heard this song this morning here in LA. As much as the Game gets on my nerves he made sure to put this tribute together and I love it.
On another note some people can be so insensitive I understand what your trying to say Nicole but every artist that will be on that stage Sunday has used Michael’s blueprint so for once I think their tribute’s will be sincere and well deserved so lets just celebrate and be thankful that the coonery that is normally on BET will take a backseat for the night and we can just remeber the legacy of the King of Pop!!
Fri, June 26, 2009 7:59 PM
I see you Diddy. I’m feelin the tribute. You can hear the emotion in the music. MJ you will forever be missed but your music will live on forever
Fri, June 26, 2009 8:03 PM

I am very sad that we have lost Michael. He was a big part of my pre-teen years and I love him and I will miss him. I wish I had the honor of meeting him. He should have marry me instead of Lisa Marie Presley. She was not worthy of him. I wish I could have helped him some way…I am very distraught.
Fri, June 26, 2009 9:26 PM

I was just listening to all of MJ’s music on the internet. Wow. I kinda forgot how many hits he really had. It was like a trip down memory lane. Now this man had true genuine talent . He actually earned the title of “ICON” I’m tired of everyone labeling themselves as icons nowadays. If someone has to label themselves or try to convince you that they are.. well that’s just commercial egotistical bs.
Anyway…
I am still in a fog. He will be missed by so many.Poor Michael. I hope he finally found the peace he sought after so many years of media torment. May God bless you. We all miss you Mike!!!Can’t wait to hear all the music you had yet to release…IT’S NOT OVER YET!!!!
Fri, June 26, 2009 10:10 PM
Why oh why is the doctor Black?
Fri, June 26, 2009 10:15 PM
Sidenote, I would hope Ginuwine would also be part of the tribute…I’m sure he will though…
Fri, June 26, 2009 10:16 PM

Fri, June 26, 2009 10:32 PM

Fri, June 26, 2009 10:33 PM

Fri, June 26, 2009 10:37 PM
*sigh* SMH!
Fri, June 26, 2009 10:41 PM
I wouldnt mind seeing Rihanna perform please dont stop the music and C Breezy do whatever song he want to do.
Sidebar – I LUV me some Toccora but I so get TIRED of seeing her BOOBS hanging out 24/7! Enough already cover them thangs up!
Fri, June 26, 2009 10:52 PM
I can’t wait for the BET Award show, I think it is great that the stars will pay tribute to him and legacy that night. I hope it is a happy and fulfilling time that focus on the music and the icon that is Michael Jackson and hopefully the stars try not to OUT do each other and just come together. However, I kind of wish that they do a total different show or event that is solely dedicated to MJ, he should have a night just for his memory and dedicated to the music business. My heart goes out to Janet and the Jackson family.
Nice song
Fri, June 26, 2009 11:05 PM
The song was very nice just listened to it.
TV1 is showing the 30th anniv concert. I love me some Mya she is a GREAT REAL n TRUE dancer people sleep on her!
Fri, June 26, 2009 11:07 PM
Exactly! Rihanna payed tribute to Michael Jackson in her song “Please Don’t Stop the Music”…the song was also a international hit when it was released. It would be cool if she performed it.
R.I.P to Michael Jackson.
Fri, June 26, 2009 11:11 PM
That is a good idea…
Fri, June 26, 2009 11:27 PM
I was at my graduation when I heard the news of his death.. I was almost fighting back tears because it was so surreal, I was in disbelief.
…on a different note.. it is kinda interesting that MJ was almost scorned by people (some say he is a sell out for bleaching his skin.. some say he molest little boys) etc etc, they give MJ so much hatred and disrespect (which may have lead to stress and depression)… anyway, after doing all of that to contribute to his unhappiness, people are now mourning. SMH at hypocrites.
Sat, June 27, 2009 12:52 AM
I would love to see Chris brown pay tribute to him on Sunday but I have a feeling he not going to
Sat, June 27, 2009 1:06 AM
Well said!!!!
Sat, June 27, 2009 1:11 AM
He Better!!!!! Sorry….NO ONE else can do Mike like him. Not even Usher!
Sat, June 27, 2009 1:44 AM
You forgot The Game is on that track lol it’s actually his track…
RIP MICHAEL JACKSON, THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER OF ALL TIME!!!!!
can’t wait for the BET Awards either, hope they do good on the tribute whoever does it
Sat, June 27, 2009 2:07 AM
that song is sooo beautiful, the fact they recorded it in a day shows Michael’s impact. Wanye’s vocal’s are outstanding. The awards should be dedicated to Michael’s legacy for without Michael 99% of the artists attended would be no where. This is the single biggest loss the music industry has ever seen
Sat, June 27, 2009 2:22 AM
I am still so empty inside….i don’t know what type of emotion to feel =/
anywho…the song was coo for being put together in a matter of hours. Sunday should be the Michael Jackson Awards and June 25th should be placed on a calendar!
r.i.p. michael joseph jackson….the greatest worldwide entertainer to ever hit the stage…..music will never be the same :(
Sat, June 27, 2009 4:07 AM
I WILL ALWAYS LOVE AND MISS MJ. I LOVED HOW HIM & JANET WERE LIKE TWINS, BUT MJ REMAINED CLOSE WITH HIS FAMILY NO MATTER WHAT.
I COULD NOT STAND CHRIS BROWN FOR WHAT HE DID, BUT I THINK SUNDAY AT BET AWARDS IS THE ONLY CHANCE HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO WIN BACK HIS FANS & REJUMP HIS CAREER BECAUSE HE IS TRULY THE BEST PERSON TO IMITATE MJ’S DANCE MOVES AND I WOULD BE SO HAPPY TO SEE HIM BUST SOME MOVES ON SUNDAY. BUT HE WOULD HAVE TO START OFF WITH A SINCERE APOLOGY FOR HIS BEHAVIOR.
I REALLY DO THINK CHRIS BROWN IS THE BEST MAN FOR THE JOB, I JUST HOPE HE LEARNED FROM HIS MISTAKES AND I HOPE HE UNDERSTAND THIS IS NOT ALL SAYING HE CAN BE AS GOOD AS MICHAEL OVERALL BUT HE DEFINITELY CAN DO A HECK OF A JOB IMITATING HIS STEPS PERFECTLY.
LOVE YOU MJ
Sat, June 27, 2009 4:29 AM
So true. I was thinking the same thing. I love this song. Great job! It had me crying. Always love you Michael!
Sat, June 27, 2009 7:01 AM
I thought Chris Brown and Usher’s comments were the most sincere. I can see usher, chris brown, neyo and even ciara b/c her dance moves or even comedian Chris Tucker being part of a tribute to Michael, but please BET do not make Beyonce with her negative comments about the whole Jackson family or Justin Timberlake who accused and put all the blame on Janet Jackson during the superbowl pay tribute to him. Only those performers that truly respected and acknowledge the influence the Michael and the Jackson family had on their careers. This is a family that comes together in time of crisis. You cant disrespect one and not the other. So please BET no hypocrites for ratings be true and honor Michael, his family, and his legacy.
Sat, June 27, 2009 8:41 AM
OMG that song just made my cry. We love you Michael. Rest In Peace
Sat, June 27, 2009 8:51 AM
———-
yeah please do not be disrespect to micheal like that..if any female line is to perform and do a tribute it should people like diana ross, tina, whitney, mrs knight..these heffas need to fall back and please dnt get me started about rihanna on singing anything..she needs to sit her ass down somewhere and never come out..these people are the reason why music died and unfortunately the only greatness we had was taken away..RIP MJ…
Sat, June 27, 2009 9:24 AM
I’m just sickened. It’s like losing my distant lover. He was my very first crush, when I was 7 years old. I’m giving the age away, but who cares, I’ve loved him for 40 years. He was the soundtrack of my life. He was the only kid on t.v. that looked like me at that time besides “Cory” on Julia. All my heroes are leaving and he was one who I thought would outlive me. It hurts… the pain is beyond measure. He belonged to the world, but in my mind as a child, he was singing to me and only me. A piece of my soul died on the 25th and I’ve awakened two mornings now, praying it was all a dream. Michael, you’ve taken some of my soul with you to Heaven, hold on to it and I’ll see you when I get there… God rest his soul and keep his family strong. I’ll miss you forever Michael.
Sat, June 27, 2009 9:29 AM
Micheal Jackson was and still is the greatest entertainer in the whole world… I will truely miss him, He inspired so many people and loved everyone..I know he is in a better place with no more suffering. I love you Micheal Jackson and Thank You for the memories and I will cherish all my memories of you for the rest of my life. Gone to Soon now he is out of our lives but still here in spirit…
Sat, June 27, 2009 9:43 AM
Michael Jackson was and always will be the greatest entertainer and humanitarian of all time. R.I.P to the man who could stand in one spot on stage and make every scream and cry! The epitome of stage presence. He will be missed.
Sat, June 27, 2009 10:37 AM
The world loved you Michael Jackson. Lets all purchase at least 1 CD or download music from itunes or other sources as a sign of tribute to MJ. I don’t care what the media is saying regarding how he ranks in comparison to the Beatles and Elvis. Lets make it a reality by making him the best selling artist ever!!!If you look at the traffic regarding music sells at this moment on Amazon and I Tunes. MJ is leading the way. The media is truly racking my last nerve with all of the negativity regarding his life. I grew up listening to MJ and his brothers and I too as all other littel girls from that era had a major crush. I felt that I was a part of something that was magical and I was looking at a genius. The bottom line regarding his child molestation trials was that he was proven innocent beyond a reasonable doubt and that is enough for me. I never believed that he did any of that. Michael was the victim of a generous heart and scandalous individuals who proved that they would do anything for the sake of a buck. I love you Micheal Jackson, RIP.
Sat, June 27, 2009 10:39 AM
My favorite song by Michael was Ben.
Sat, June 27, 2009 11:15 AM
The media killed Mike…all the pressure, all the stress, all the condemnation, all the scolding. They condemned him to a point of solitude and isolation. Had they let that man live in peace, he would still be here in my opinion. Last week they were calling him “wacko jacko”…the man was larger than life, the most famous person in the world…it’s no wonder his heart couldn’t take anymore.
I just wish they would let him rest in peace since they denied him of that while he was here. :-(
Sat, June 27, 2009 12:01 PM
i wish ppl would leave the negativity out of this post.. it IS a good idea for rihanna, beyonce and other ‘current artists’ to do tribute songs.. cause they were influenced by him
but i also think that artists like tina, diana ross, ect should do testimonies..say how they met him..how he influenced their life
Sat, June 27, 2009 12:06 PM
i dont understand why ppl hate rihanna so much that she cannot be considered to honor a man who influenced her…they both had bad times in their life..controvercy followed them both ..stop being so ridiculous
Sat, June 27, 2009 12:12 PM
love the song
Sat, June 27, 2009 12:14 PM
i will truly miss micheal.. his music will forever live on. listening to ‘cant help it’ right now :)
love this man..his voice is so smooth
Sat, June 27, 2009 1:51 PM
so true. the white media kills me. that they would even compare elvis and the beatles to mj is INSANITY. it just proves that white folks are all about minimizing any black person’s achievement. the man was an ICON. he was loved by millions of people around the globe. no one will ever touch his record sales. he changed video and radio formats. he influenced numerous artists. he was a humanitarian. he spent his WHOLE LIFE entertaining us. and when he said he loved his fans, he really meant it. i generally don’t think twice when famous people die, but i honestly feel like a part of my childhood just died. mj wrote the soundtrack to many people’s lives, mine included. R.I.P., King of Music.
Sat, June 27, 2009 1:56 PM
rihanna can fuck off, she didn´t play any tribute fuck her. she wanted a hitsong that why she used michael song. she never spoke in interviews or on tv about that she was a fan of mj, like the to mj, have been saying for years how they love michael. i dont want her to perform she can sit in the audience.
Sat, June 27, 2009 2:07 PM
That was nice track Diddy put together. MJ i cant believe it. I have not felt this sad since my mom’s twin sister died in 2005. You are by far the best entertainer in the modern day era. God sent you here and you spent 45 years of your 50 years sharing your gift with us. You are the most MISUNDERSTOOD Black man ever. You put black folks on at MTV. Please dont get this fact twisted. Your cataloge of music is just mind blowing. Your vocal ability is simply beautiful. You and Luther are the best male vocalist period. Both gone too soon. I feel very selfish right now because who will fill your shoes. You know how BET always suprise you with that off the chain opening act at each award show. Was hoping you would be the act this year. Funny how things play out. Micheal you will be missed. They are playing you all over the radio. I like the way i feel when i listen to your music. Good Nite MIKE JACK. You were the last of the greats… I am full of sorrow.
Sat, June 27, 2009 2:13 PM
so because she’s not outspoken she’s not a fan???god some ppl are so irritating….
stop hating and celerate the legend, that is micheal jackson.
Sat, June 27, 2009 4:13 PM
Just wanted to say, “Can for once in our Dog Gone lives we not use the freaking N-Word.” What kind of tribute is it to talk about pooring liquor and Michael was my N? If Michael can excel to such heights that he did without using the word, why then, do we feel that we need to use it to HONOR him? If this is what the tributes are going to sound like, I would rather not hear the GARBAGE! Also, I know that if someone has to post something like this to supposedly musical geniuses, we definitely need to tell the fools to wear a suit & don’t take the stage looking like Classless IDIOTS! Please conduct yourselves with dignity and respect! The WORLD will be WATCHING!!
Sat, June 27, 2009 4:45 PM
I love that I’ll Be There video you posted
Sat, June 27, 2009 10:39 PM
I really loved the song. I am not a fan of the Game or Puff, but wow! Chris’ and Wanya’s vocals were beautiful and the lyrics were touching. I really would love to hear Ne-yo perform ‘Gone too Soon’ because that fits his voice and C. Breezy to do ‘Bad’ cause his dance skills are ridiculous! Rest in Peace M.J. You will always be loved. And one more thing, white media would love to brainwash us into thinking that Elvis was on the same level as Mike, but it is up to us to stick to what we know. As someone said before, all races and nationalities loved Mike, not true for Elvis, maybe the Beatles though, really not sure. Anyway, stick to your guns!

As someone said before, all races and nationalities loved Mike, not true for Elvis. Anyway, stick to your guns!
