Internet sources are claiming that Beyonce is lying yet again about actually writing the tracks on her album I Am…Sasha Fierce. People were in an uproar during the “Deja Vu” era saying Beyonce would just change a word or two and drop tons of cash in order for her name to be added to the credits for Song Writer. And now, here’s what the Post had to say about the Sasha Fierce album writing credits:
Ms. Jay-Z has been called out by two different R&B ladies for not writing songs she claims are hers. According to Rap-Up magazine, Chrisette Michele revealed that Beyonce’s hit single “Ego” was originally meant for her own album “Epiphany” but she decided to hand it over to the Queen B. And here is the shady part: The track is credited to producer Elvis Williams, Beyonce Knowles and Harold Lilly … not vocal Goddess Chrisette. (Update: Beyonce was not mentioned by Christette as a writter on “Ego” when offered the song, which she turned down but did not write).
The day before that story broke, a video blog post (I think the kids are calling them vlogs, who the hell knows) by Destiny’s Child ex-member Michelle Williams and producer Rico Love was published as well. The two discussed the songwriting and production surrounding Michelle’s “Unexpected” LP, which seemed super normal. Until they brought up Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams” track and various other songs that Rico wrote for her “I Am … Sasha Fierce” album.
Rico said to Michelle, “I did ‘Radio’ and ‘Scared Of Lonely,’ but I co-wrote ‘Scared Of Lonely’ with Solange, Lashawn Daniels, and Crystile.” Wait … you didn’t say Beyonce, Rico? But ASCAP has her name on the song’s credits. You little sneaky wig-wearing diva. All it takes is a few measly scraps of your millions, and these folks are happy to give you a good track.

this is old news though. There’s a vid on youtube with like half a mill views which gives like detailed info about all the songs she been credited for that she didnt write or was from older songs.
While i really dont care i mean, if its so trivial why do it? You know you didnt write the song so why would you put that you were involved in the writing process? It would be to make your fans think that your talented of course. I mean it really doesnt matter whether she wrote it or not because it would have sold either way but i mean. Album sales are based on popularity. Popularity does not equate with talent. Refer to Exhibit A Rihanna for that. In truth, the best albums out there don’t even crack the top 200. They are beneath the surface due to the fact that talent doesn’t matter anymore.

When you are an artist like Beyonce’ it is NOT uncommon to get credit for songs. This has been going on long before her. If a writer can get a placement on a multi selling act a lot of times they (the writer ) will give up a part of his or her writer’s share. Some artist just don’t chose to put their names in the credits… like Whitney Houston and a few others. I know for a fact back in the day when Whitney was really doing it… she got 25% off of the top because it was guaranteed that she would make your song ride the charts so that writer could have a whole other life finically wise and not to mention other doors opening up. The Bodyguard soundtrack is STILL the best selling soundtrack of all time. I know people who didn’t even write a song on that cd (They just produced a cover) and it made them an instant millionaire. So just imagine if you had a song on there that wasn’t even a single. ( You get where I’m going) I’m a song writer…. trust me if a multi selling artist wants 1 of my songs and I know it will change my life career wise AND finically, I would have NO problem giving up some of the writer’s share.
Don’t be fooled people. This is how it is and has been for a long time.

If you look at the recent passing of MJ the most valuable thing in his estate was his catalog. Any artist with good management (say what you want about pappa Knowles but he gets his girls paid) is going to make sure that they get as many publishing credits as possible because that is what you get paid on. Song royalties are paid out based on splits so if B gets a song from someone and changes a few words no she didnt “write” the song but a split sheet is based on percentages so she might get 1% of the money for that song but 1% of a song that sells 4 million copies world-wide is gonna add up. It’s called the music BUSINESS for a reason.

We pay Ascap Ascap distributes tothe artist personally. When music is created, there are two copyrights- the rights to the song, and the rights to the recording. So when you listen to Beyonce’s song, there are 2 pieces of the pie to carve up. One is the composition or writing of the song (which is owned by the songwriter) and the sound recording (which is owned by the record company).
The majority of revenue from a song comes from public performances and record sales.
Money from record sales don’t all go to the record company, some goes to the songwriter as well. There is a royalty rate, which is something like 9 cents per song, per copy sold.
Public performance rights only applies to the composition which means the money for this goes straight to the songwriter. So whenever you hear a song on the radio, the person singing it is only getting money for that radio play if they wrote the song. This is why artists like Beyonce are co-credited with writing songs so they can get paid. They may not have anything to do with writing it, but it’s a way to get a piece of the copyright, hence more royalty money for the artist.
So…Beyonce gets writing credit, not for the glory of saying she wrote a song, but for the royalties. Smart girl.
