The situation with Mia is soooo sad its not even funny…I was a big fan of her mother’s Bebe Moore Campbell’s books and she use to write all the time how her daughter was Bipolar…she put her in a home a couple of years ago because it was getting worse…then her mother died (i think 2 years ago??) and all hell broke lose, not only that, Mia has a son, so whats going on with him??? She has been on camera wildin lately, last year she had a homemade porno looking all crack out…its about to be 2010…crack should not be an issue anymore!!!!

This is such a sad story my heart bleeds everytime I see or hear about her. Maia Campbell is bi-polar. Her actions are exactly what happens when those suffering from the disease do not take their meds. Bi-polar people don’t believe that they have a problem, they refuse their meds causing them to be even more erratic. They often use street drugs and alcohol to self-medicate and are extremely sexually active. Bebe Moore Campbell provided a lot of information in her book 72-Hour Hold, and as you can see Maia is suffering from all of the symptoms described. She definetly needs medical counseling and intervention, but unfortunately she is being taken advantage of by those around her and exploited (as seen in the taping of her). She is not in her right mind. Please pray for her, because if something does not change, she’ll end up dead.

Maia is and has been bipolar…..and it’s truly sad as this is what can happen when mentally ill people do not get the support and help they need. I know someone who has more than one relative with this illness and despite their deep pockets, their family members are still struggling. Mental illness is very, very difficult to deal with and in our community it’s often misunderstood, undiagnosed and ill-treated and we often don’t have the resources to handle it. I had to turn this off, it was so heartbreaking. I know folks who know her and who knew her mother. I truly hope that public attention can help her get helped in some way. The niccas taping her are just as lost and sad as she is.

It is sad because in order for her to get help someone in her fam will have to get it court ordered for her to take her meds. Okay I don’t even know why this is even titled “Video Fab” excluding RHOA. DMZ sounds crazy, and I can’t even comprehend what he is blabbering about. I’m so shocked about Maia Campbell though. I feel sooo bad for Maia Campbell, I’ve read several different times that she suffers from mental illness. I wish her mother was still around to try to get her help, but I’m sure there are other family members and friends who try to help but to no avail. I’ve had family members who have been in similar situations, mental illnesses and drug use combined, you try to help all you can, but in most cases, there is nothing you can do but keep trying and pray. It’s very sad.

SORRY…but I really don’t feel sorry for her. It’s a sad situation. When she did that interview years ago, I think it was in Sister 2 Sister, trying to make herself seem better that many, I looked at her in a different way. She put herself on too high a pedestal and didn’t realize the fact that she was an addict, gave many a reason to look down at her. At the same time she was knocking others. Those up too high, fall the hardest.

OMG Maia. The first time I heard she was going through some rough times was on the other site and that shit made me sad. To go from RIches to Rags on account of imbalanced hormones and sick people taking advantage of her. I hope she gets the help she needs cuz she WILL end up DEAD in a alley somewhere. And the sadder part is that she has kids..lord I’m gonna pray for her.

She was like that before. The book BeBe Campbell made about a woman trying to help her mentally ill son get help was actually about Maia. So this is her off her meds, and probably on drugs as well. The checks probably stopped coming in since its no longer in syndication, but if she still gets checks the production just can’t stop paying her if its contractual. Its basically like if you worked somewhere and recieve pension, they just can’t stop paying you because you have a drug problem.

Her mother Bebe Moore Campbell was one of my favourite writers – I looooved Sweet Summer – still have a dog-eared copy on my bookshelf that I whip out and read every now and then.
And I feel like both her mother and grandmother would be rolling over in their graves right now. Her grandmother was actually a social worker, university educated and an AKA and look at her granddaughter now – men exploiting her and making a fool out of her. That’s hurtful.
But I totally believe what people are saying about her being bi-polar because anyone who has read Sweet Summer would know that addictive behaviour and mental illness seems to run in the family. Bebe wrote about how her aunt Ruth (Maia’s great-aunt) was a bad alcoholic and how her cousin Michael had major issues.

It’s so sad to see someone in her condition being ridiculed. She has been very open, in the past, about being Manic Depressive. As a matter of fact, in her mother’s (the late Bebe Moore Campbell, noted fiction author) coming to terms with the illness she did lots of research about it and wrote a novel trying to bring more attention to the great stigmas around personal health amongst just about everyone in this country.

It is unfortunate that you feel that way. I am not familiar with the article you are talking about, but based on what you said, it is possible that she may have been exhibiting signs of her illness then. When people who have bi-polar disorder are going through the manic phase…they often think more highly of themselves than they should, they have grandiose thoughts, so it could have been that. Regardless, I hate to see someone suffering like that. Mental illness is something that is not handled very well by our community in general, and many, many people use drugs to self-medicate because they are often so ashamed to admit that they have a mental illness.

I finally got a chance to see the video and it IS heartbreaking!! :( Her being beautiful has nothing to do with our reaction, we feel for her because we have a point of reference, her TV show, to remember what she was like in the past. My BIL suffers from the same disorder and nothing we did could help him. You literally have to commit a crime before you get help and unfortunately in a pschotic break he did just that and is now locked up in a psych hospital. I hope she has family that sees this video and that they try, and TRY hard for an intervention. My prayers are going out to her and her family.

You are soo true, I read the book her mother wrote in school about the challenges a middle class african family face inregards to resources and committing their children after the age of 18. The book is called 72-hour hold. That is when I found out that this girl had mental health problems. It was inspired by her daughter’s mental health illness which is still called bipolar with manic specification. Pray for her, she is soo manic in that video, I can see what her mother was describing in the book.

Wow. That video was heartbreaking. It is sad what mental illness does when left untreated. We also lost Lisa Nicole Carson, from Ally McBeal, to mental illness. I believe she is institutionalize now.
I am thankful that I dealt with my depression. It is not funny or a joke to be lost in your own mind or to hate the person inside of you.
She will remain in my prayers and hopefully with people like Jennifer Lewis speaking out, black people will understand that this is not an other person disease, it is also ours.

I went back to research her mother, novelist, bebe moore campbell, and discovered that she died of brain cancer 3 years ago. Her last novel was about a mother seeking treatment for her mentally ill daughter. I think this is the case with Maia.

I agree. I know someone with the disease and it hurts to watch. People with this disorder need help but are most times not willing to see that they have a problem at all which causes them to skip the meds. They need someone (most times a parent or family member) to “monitor” them way into adult hood. I PRAY she and anyone else suffering from a mental illness and a drug addiction, get the help they need…and those of us who know someone with a problem should do what we can. Large or small. :(

Although it seems out of order to post this video, it may in the end provide a deterrent to at least 1 future drug user (hopefully).
Incidentally, it should be irrelevant to us how beautiful she used to be because if she was average or less than average looking in the past it’s still a sad situation.
For those who have not lived with that experiences, you really can’t help someone until they reached the bottom and THEY’RE PREPARED FOR HELP. You can believe that friends and family have reached out over and over again over many years so don’t think that family has abandon her not likely.
The pimp and his nephew abusing her are just part of the cycle of the ills and sufferings we place on each other as po folks.
Lastly, Maia is just the face of just what is happening everyday around us to good very good non celebrities that have fallen to this disease. I kno, one of my fam is. A very good guy by the way.

That has to be the saddest thing I’ve seen in a long time. She is truly not in her right-mind and that is so sad. “72 Hour Hold” really was about her. The people who are taping her is definite exploitation, however maybe some good can come out of the video being out here. Maybe it’s good for people to see the real effects of mental illness, especially in someone they remember as being beautiful, vibrant, and full of potential. OMG. She is so far gone. The sad thing is that I had an aunt who acted almost the same way except she was just on drugs. We tried everything to get her off the streets. My family even basically kidnapped her(my mother held her arms and then sat on her in the back seat while other family members helped and drove) but it wasn’t enough. Once they go to rehab they don’t have to stay there if they don’t want to. In Maia’s case, I think her family would have to do what Britney Spear’s family did. They had her declared mentally ill and appointed her father as her guardian so that they could make her get help and take her medication.

I identify with Maia. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 4 years ago and let me tell some of you something. Mental illness does not have a face, so please stop with the “she was so beautiful” stuff. She is STILL beautiful. It is the chemical reaction in her brain throwing her off. The earlier on the disease is caught, the better your chances are. Bipolar disorder comes with triggers…meaning things that will tick a person off. Traumatic experiences can trigger a depressive episode that can last for a long time.
PRAY FOR HER. If any of you are in California and ever run into her or see her, PRAY FOR HER AGAIN. You have NO idea how hard it is to deal with and for those saying “she can get help”…Maia is NOT in her right mind. She is not functioning like a person capable of making conscious decisions. Understand that before making crazy comments.
You may have a family member going through this and not even know it. Please read up on the illness and look for warning signs. Don’t be like my family was and just say “Oh it’s stress.” No, it’s FAR beyond stress.

It is sad when people take advantage of someone and it is obvious that someone is taking advantage of Maia Campbell. She has a mental disorder and probably medicates herself with crack. Where is her daughter? Where is her father? Why isn’t someone taking care of her. This should not be on YBF. I love YBF but since you know so many people why not call LL, Debbie, Carlton somebody to get her some help instead of publishing this sad stuff. Now that you have posted the clips from Maia Campbell and knowing that she is our fellow sister and is in some official trouble what are you and your collegues going to do to help this girl? Since YBF was able to locate this issue and post it on this board I know there are resources that you can provide in tracking down this girls’ family. I think YBF owes it to the YBF fans and especially Maia Campbell. FOR ALL OF THE WOMEN WHO SAW THE VIDEO: TAKE TIME TODAY TO PRAY FOR MAIA AS WELL AS THE STRUGGLING SISTERS OUT THERE. THIS ALL THE PROOF WE NEED.
Personally, I think this is sick and tragic. We have a sister in our heads who made some bad choices along with the fact that she is sick, but instead of helping her, we see her brothers taking advantage of her, abuse her, tape her, make fun of her and put her on blast, instead of merely helping her. Is this what we have evolved into? Is this what we find entertaining? Is it funny that this woman knew she was going to get “beat” and was okay with it? What is going on? My heart sunk deeply when I saw the video. I can’t seem to shake this feeling off. I don’t know how to help but I know YBF could do soething for the sake of humanity.
I encourage everyone to pray for this young lady as well as the others out there like this that we don’t know of.

WOW is all I can say on this post. So many comments reflect back to Maia’s beauty – but yall it’s deeper than that. At the end of the day, no matter how beautiful she was – it’s her soul and her mind that’s messed up. Instead of making comments about her beauty and making jokes about drugs – I strongly suggest everyone who understands the power of God to lift Maia up in prayer. The God I serve is MORE than able to release her from the bondage that she is under. If you REALLY listen to what she is saying – the girl is HURTING. I, of course, do not personally know her – but as a child of God – it is my duty and yours to place her at the top of all prayer lists. She needs to be delivered yall – and its gonna take a lot more than WISHING she changes. May God bless each of you and place something on your hearts for Maia and others you may know like her…

That is probably her pimp. It would be hard to do a show or get her from under the tyranny of a pimp. Her family probably can not help her because of this and also she probably turn on them due to her illness. All I can say is mental health issues are real and not to be played with.
Maybe after people pray for Maia, contact your government to find out what they are doing to assist families to get their loved ones committed without it being voluntary and longer than 72 hours. Also find out what you could do to change the laws/policies.
Maybe this tape surfaced to bring awareness to a problem that is plaguing all races. We laugh at people when they using substances or blame them but I guarantee you, alot of these people have undiagnosed mental health problems ecspecially in the black community. Trust this is not a choice that Maia or DMX made, they both have some real issues that they can not control.
Also, let’s not blame the industry for this problem. It is difficult to get your own family members off the street let alone a none family member.

I’ve been a fan of this site from the start and I’ve always loved this site. It’s always been very entertaining. I’ve never posted on here before however, I felt the need to do so after watching the Maia Campbell video. It brought tears to my eyes no lie to see such a beautiful black women so down and out. I didn’t know BeBe Campbell was her mother. She probably got her inspiration for “72 Hour Hold” from her. This is so sad. When I saw Maia on this video, my mouth just dropped, I just never would have thought that someone could get so low and strung out.
