Solange spoke to the folks over at NY Mag at the BCBG show yesterday. And here’s what she had to say about why she took charge and shaved her head for the third time:
“I did it once when I was 16 and again when I was 18,” she said backstage at BCBG. “I just need to kind of start over and liberate myself and feel empowered. I feel like so many women put so much of their power in their hair, and I was succumbing to that — like, spending so much time and money and energy on my hair.”

As a family, we have been struggling with Maia in her illness for quite some time. We continue to hold fast to our faith and hope that some day she will realize that healing will begin when she decides to reach out and accept the help and treatment that have been offered to her. We all have challenges in life that we must face, but when compound problems such as mental illness and substance abuse are prevalent, it can appear that there is no way out. However, our sustaining faith and trust in God compels us to believe differently. We strongly believe that Maia will be healed.
We also know that Maia’s mother, the late Bebe Moore Campbell, who devoted much of her later years in life to mental health awareness and education, along with her family members and friends would welcome your prayers and support for Maia’s sustained recovery.

I love Solange. Her vibe is that she’s original, refreshing and just a chill chick. I loved her last album, she’s a old soul in a young body. She may not have the greatest voice, but her sound is all her own. I’m personally since of Mr. & Mrs. Carter. Enough already, have some kids and sit down somewhere. I’m extremely happy that Maia’s family is helping her. I understand mental illness because my Mother has mental issues and it was extremely hard to get her to a Doctor for a diagnosis and medication. It is exhausting to keep trying to convince an ill person that they need help. When they’re screaming at you, when other people insert themselves into that person’s life as an enabler now you’re not just dealing with your loved one but trying to extracate a hanger on at the same time. Now imagine in Maia’s case the family must have dealt with so many people who were hanging on b/c of her celebrity. I’m just glad they’re still hanging in there with her. It’s hard.

I met her on Hollywood Blvd. and talked to her for a short time. She seemed very confused, talkative and paranoid. It was sad because I did’nt recognize her as Maia Campbell initially. She told me that her name was Cali but some people call her Maia Campbell. I just figured she was on drugs or something. She ran away in heals towards a night club where she claimed to be on the list. I felt sorry for her but it really hit me when I read the above note from her Dad and Grandmother. “God bless Maia and her family”
