  • L.A. Premiere Of Good Hair

Written by Natasha - Last updated: Friday, October 2, 2009

YBF chicks were in full effect at last night’s L.A. premiere of Chris Rock’s documentary Good Hair:

Nia Long--featured in the movie–looked stunning per usual in this sparked blouse and mini shorts. Gorgeous look and hair and makeup for her. F’in love it.

Gabby Union and Jill Marie put on their best sexy hair poses on the red carpet.

Melyssa Ford and Elise Neal–both are in the movie too–did the same.

And Raven Symone hit the premiere since she’s in the movie as well.  I know some folks may not be feeling her look, but she’s looking pretty damn fabulous to me.  Work it Ray…

I hit up the screening for Good Hair here in DC last week.  My take: Funny (of course) and indeed a necessary discussion of such a big issue for the black community and women as a whole.  But I do have mixed feelings on the over-generalization, over simplifications, and assumptions made throughout the documentary.

At times, it also felt like black women, in particular, were being belittled and slapped in the face for how many of us choose to care for our hair. I also took issue with only one type of hair salon/hair care “professionals” that was being portrayed.  I guess perpetuating the “black ghetto girl” stereotype is great for laughs and all.  But there’s indeed a much more fabulous side of black hair care that could have been portrayed as well.  On a more positive note, I do applaud Chris for taking on this project and not waiting around for someone outside of the black community to talk about the issues of our own.  Just my opinion…

Lots more pics when you read the rest…

Malaak and Gabby and Chris all looked nice.  I see Malaak is rocking braids now.

Gorgeous gals Gabby Union and Jill Marie Jones.

Our other fave “Girlfriend” Golden Brooks showed off her post baby body.  Looks like all that baby weight is damn near gone already…

    Loretta Divine was there.

Eve rocked a cute chic look from Charlotte Ronson.

    H-O-T.

Tamala Jones showed off her cute short cut.

    Angel Conwell was there.

    Cute look for Raven.

Chris and pal David Spade kicked it on the carpet.

    Actress Jenna Fredrique was there.

Traci Thoms--who’s in the movie–was there.

Great look for Melyssa I must admit.

And Elise rocked an interesting dress with thigh high boots.

lol…even malaak’s braids are extensions. is the moral of the story that fake hair IS good hair?

Honestly, white people bleach the shit out of their hair ( I am guilty as charged) so why can’t a black chic wear a weave? 90% of women do something “unatural” anyways…

I have to say all the women look really pretty here.

First let me say that women who go natural also CHOOSE to take care of their hair. I’m not sure if the emphasis was on “how MANY of us” or “HOW many of us”. But being natural takes a lot of care and attention as well. That being said I think it’s great that Chris should even bring this up. His inspiration was how his daughters felt there was only ONE way that they could be beautiful. I think he just wants us all to know (like he said on Oprah) that we are beautiful regardless of how we wear our hair. Some people live beyond their means JUST for the sake of their hair. It’s ridiculous that some folks put the salon before the supermarket. That’s not right. But if you have the time, energy, patience and money to do it then go ahead. Just remember there is MORE THAN ONE STANDARD OF BEAUTY. Long and silky is NOT all there is to life.

Nia Long is ageless and gorgeous and Raven…rock those curves girl. Hips, T*ts and a little waist. Work it!

Wow. The point of the movie is NOT wear a natural. He’s just bringing light to a sensitive subject. The goal of the movie to to understand WHY Black women, and women in general, are so pressed about hair. Maybe if you see the movie, hell or even just watch an interview of Chris talking about the film, and stop making assumptions, you’d get it…

Claire – get over yourself. No one is questioning whether we know that black women can grow long hair. OF COURSE WE CAN!!! Were you serious with that point????? – I sincerely hope not. Maybe you should write a letter to Dark & Lovely, Essence or NAACP to give you a special honors for growing your hair if that’s what you need to feel better. This is about having fun with it – why are you taking it so seriously?? Women should have fun with their beauty and they (we) do and that’s why men LOVE IT!!!! I can’t help but feel slightly creeped out by the thought of wearing hair in my head that grew out of someone else’s scalp, I just can’t be sold on that.

I feel ok about changing what grew out of my own scalp( hair dye, relaxing, etc) but anything that involves using someone else’s hair?? Can’t get with it, to each his own, but my opinion( aside from those who lose their hair for medical reasons) is simply this…

If more Black women knew how to properly care for their own hair, then there would be a decline in weave/wig usage.

Yeah it takes more time and effort and care to care for your own hair, but I just think its just lazy to use wigs and weaves instead of caring for your own. I get the “Oh I just want to switch and change up my hair and weaves/wigs allow me to do that” defense but lets be real, most women who use weaves/wigs usually are not doing it to “switch it up” but in my opinion to “cover it up”. They don’t want people to see their abused/damaged real hair.

Its like that cliche’d excuse that stippers give when they try to defend why the strip “I’m paying for school” Riiiiiiiiiiight. Most women who wear weaves get very defensive and I think its because many just don’t have healthy hair underneath

Using wigs and weaves to protect your real hair is understandable, especially for the celebs pictured here, but I refuse to believe that even they are filming a movie, etc 24-7 to the point where we never ever ever see their real hair. I think the majority of women uses weaves/wigs as a crutch and to hide the fact that they really just don’t know how to manage their own real hair. I think a small majority use it for medical reasons and/or as protective measures.

The only real issue I have with the weave controversy is that almost NO ONE wears their real hair anymore..like EVER. I mean when I was younger there was variety, you had Regine rocking the wigs on Living Single…but then Mrs. Claire Huxtable rocked a nice little mom due. Brandy had mushroom then the braids..Jada had a short due..and so on and so fourth. Any young girl could turn on the tv and see themselves somewhere. Now..well not so much. Whether people will admit it or not the fact is sooo many young black girls suffer from low self esteem due to the how their beauty is judged based on the texture/and or style of their hair. And as they get older all those feelings usually just get buried under no lye relaxers and weave nets. Not all but many.

I think it’s funny how everytime I go get braids they put there hands all thu my hair and then call the other girls to come touch it. WE’VE BEEN POUNDED OVER THE HEAD SO MUCH, FOR SO LONG FROM COMMERCIALS, ETC. THAT LONG AND SILKY IS EQUATED WITH BEAUTIFUL THAT WE DON’T REALLY WANT TO BE SEEN WITH OUR OWN HAIR (IT’S AMAZING THAT THE FOLKS PICKED OUT OF THESE PICTURES THAT ARE SAID TO LOOK GOOD ARE THOSE WITH THE LONG SILKY WEAVES).

WHEN OUR 2 AND 3 YEAR-OLD DAUGHTERS ARE WANTING TO BE WHITE SO THEY CAN HAVE THAT HAIR OR THINK THEY ARE NOT PRETTY BECAUSE THEY HAVE SHORT KINKY HAIR (AND TRUST ME THESE LITTLE GIRLS ARE OUT THERE IN ABUNDANCE; MY OWN DAUGHTER EVEN TOLD ME WHEN SHE WAS LITTLE THAT SHE WANTED TO BE WHITE), THEN WE HAVE A PROBLEM.

WAKE UP PEOPLE. WE ARE CREATING A GENERATION OF GIRLS THAT DO NOT LOVE THEMSELVES.

He doesn’t know that black women go skiing, scuba diving and sailing. He has to stick to what he knows. It’s a damn shame that only Tamala Jones and I think Loretta Divine are the only women who are wearing their real hair. All the rest are weavelicious. I’m surprise that Malaak wore cornrows. Good for her.

but the cornrows are fake too. whats the difference?

Nia told Chelsea Handler she has tracks in, when she was on the show the other day. I like Nia but something seems so “Hollywood” and “Valley Girl” about her attitude now!! IDK but she just seemed different in the way she talked as well.

SMH: I can’t help but feel slightly creeped out by the thought of wearing hair in my head that grew out of someone else’s scalp, I just can’t be sold on that.I feel ok about changing what grew out of my own scalp( hair dye, relaxing, etc) but anything that involves using someone else’s hair?? Can’t get with it, to each his own, but my opinion( aside from those who lose their hair for medical reasons) is simply this…If more Black women knew how to properly care for their own hair, then there would be a decline in weave/wig usage.Yeah it takes more time and effort and care to care for your own hair, but I just think its just lazy to use wigs and weaves instead of caring for your own. Most women who wear weaves get very defensive and I think its because many just don’t have healthy hair underneathUsing wigs and weaves to protect your real hair is understandable, especially for the celebs pictured here, but I refuse to believe that even they are filming a movie, etc 24-7 to the point where we never ever ever see their real hair. I think the majority of women uses weaves/wigs as a crutch and to hide the fact that they really just don’t know how to manage their own real hair. I think a small majority use it for medical reasons and/or as protective measures.

I respect your opinion. But personally I have long thick hair just like Oprah but I will admit in a heart beat that I wear wigs for a three month period in between relaxers. So my hair stay healthy and has a change to chill in corn rows which I get done every month during those three months.

But honestly I love my wigs! I can roll out of bed, shower, shake and go! And look good! I get to work on time or early!

My mother has natural virgin hair and she still like to wear wigs to from time to time because as stated before no matter if it is natural or relaxed black hair requires time and care to keep it healthy and make it grow. To each their own don’t judge if you don’t take care of it just take care of your own!

Anyway they ladies above look lovey and Nia gets an A++++!!!!

LOL, ok well pat yo’ weave at them then! I have to say I don’t rock a weave, but to those who rock them well (emphasis on well) i say more power to you. Why can’t we (just like other races) add variety to our looks by changing our hair whenever we feel like it, however we choose to?

Nia Long and Gabby Union has the best weave there. Both ladies have hairlines and it seems that they only have weave at the back of their heads. Nicely done ladies. Plus, the weave blends in nicely with their real hair. Now that’s how weave is suppose to be done. All the other ladies with weave look like their are wearing wigs.

Not all but many

WHEN OUR 2 AND 3 YEAR-OLD DAUGHTERS ARE WANTING TO BE WHITE SO THEY CAN HAVE THAT HAIR OR THINK THEY ARE NOT PRETTY BECAUSE THEY HAVE SHORT KINKY HAIR (AND TRUST ME THESE LITTLE GIRLS ARE OUT THERE IN ABUNDANCE; MY OWN DAUGHTER EVEN TOLD ME WHEN SHE WAS LITTLE THAT SHE WANTED TO BE WHITE), THEN WE HAVE A PROBLEM.WAKE UP PEOPLE. WE ARE CREATING A GENERATION OF GIRLS THAT DO NOT LOVE THEMSELVES.

Just like white women have issues, asian women have issues…in Brazil, they are like #1 in cosmetic surgery. Sometimes we act like black women are the only ones who have self-esteem problems. It is a FEMALE issue if anything. We just all go about trying to fix ourselves different ways. We keep claiming the “whoa it is hard being black woman and we don’t love ourselves.” So people will keep feeeding off that. A black child not loving herself has nothing to do with her hair! It has more to do with her environment. Once you get off the hair, it is skin color, then it is weight. And this movie AIN’T going to fix that.

AND…so what?! The question is, why are we so worried about what everyone else is doing? If you are wearing your hair, and that is all that should matter to you. There we go generalizing because there are plenty of black women still wearing their hair. I just don’t get the double standard. Other women “improve” themselves through botox, implants, extensions and they are just improving on what they got. Black women wear extensions, we got a slave complex. Chris Rock getting on TV saying you can’t run your fingers through a black woman’s hair is most idiotic thing I have ever heard. Now, I have no problem with fake hair I thinks it’s great. Hollywood is harsh not 2 mention that they travel all the time, they have 2 have a quick and easy way to maintain their hair. Everytime I hear someone go into the weave topic and how it equates low self esteem, I bring up the same thing. People wear makeup, they wear a push up bra, ect. All of these are enhancers. Up untila bout a year ago, I was a weave queen!! My purpose was because I was letting my hair grow. Even now, I still will throw a weave in my hair because I like how it can give a variety of different styles to my look. Its an enhancer, the same way makeup, botox (eeeeeeeehhh), push up bras, booty pads, nail polish, ect is! Natural is not the only way someone will have self confidence about themselves. I can be as confident with or without a weave! IF you dont like the idea of weave, then dont wear one. There is no law stating you must wear a weave, therefore dont get your panties in a bunch. Yes, there is an em[hasis on long hair to be beautiful but short is the new long and women are just as beautiful! If we believe that, then we wont be here debating which one is right and which one is wrong! Be you, whether that be a weaved up sexy mama or a natural sexy mama!

I think that children should be rocking their own hair until they are in their teens.

my ex boyfriends niece was an example. Such a pretty little girl, but her mother insisted on putting that awful weave in her hair in the form of braids. It was so heavy for her delicate scalp and she would always complain about it, not to mention that it made her look like a older woman and not an innocent little girl.

when that garbage was out after her father fussed and hollered, everyone was amazed at how long and beautiful her own hair looked and how cute she was again. which made one wonder why put that mess in the first place.

RIGHT!! I remember I saw this baby about 18 months… couldnt even walk yet but she had kinky twists in her hair. All I could think about was.. why would a mother have her child, not even two yet, sit in chair/lap for 3 to 4 hours while people put extensions in her hair! I agree with you. Keep it at the basics like I had when I was a kid: Ponytails with knockers or cornrows! Then when you get older maybe 8 you can wear the back of your hair out (no matter how long or short it was).

Yes, everyone has issues, but when a BLACK child comes to her BLACK parent and very specifically refers to her hair by saying, just like Kris Rock’s daughter did, that she wants to be white or get a perm so she can have hair like white people or she thinks she is not pretty because she doesn’t, THEN THAT IS A HAIR ISSUE AND A SELF-ESTEEM ISSUE.

      3) It’s just playing with different beauty routines. whatever makes you happy is how you should wear your hair. How come your real hair NEVER makes you happy? I never see it.

I promise you, no man wants to put their hair in broken off thinned hair, nor do they want to touch your weave. You are soo limited in what you can do, do swimming, no sex in the rain, you basically suck

Do and say what you want, but every single black woman on here should be offended that these chicks showed up to a movie about loving your own hair, with a WEAVE or WIG on. Come on sistas, stand for something. BE OFFENDED by that!

Everybody in some sort of way alters the way they look, not just through their hair. For example.makeup, heels, etc. When you wear makeup you are creating a certain look that you want. Your eyes are not naturally smokey and your skin is not naturally golden and glowy and thats where bronzer and eyeshadow, etc come in. Your not as tall as you would like to be so you put on heels and get that feminine statuesqe look. Same goes for weave. You don’t have long beautiful and flowy hair so you get it through weave. And the big deal is…..
Just because you don’t wear weave doesn’t mean your “confident” within yourself, and vice versa because Im sure there are other things that you are altering and you don’t even realize it.

LOL – I agree, leave the kids hair alone!!

I did hair for many years, and sometimes in L.A. I did my own weave and everyone thought it was my own hair. I must admit it was frikkin cute! But when I took it out, I didn’t feel as pretty. I felt like I was not at my best without it. THAT WAS A PROBLEM. I got caught up in the notion that men liked long hair, my real hair was non worthy of rockin, and in reality I was all twisted. Not to mention all the money I spent and all the time I spent trying to look a certain way…. stop the madness ladies!!

HEALTHY hair is GOOD hair. I have no problem with weaves. But take care of your hair underneath all the weave!! We do not have BAD hair. But we fry it, dye it, perm it, pull it, yank it, and bake it until it can’t take anymore. Our hair is beautiful and so diverse in characteristics! I did a big chop in February and I had no idea my natural kinky spiral curls were so lovely :)

Take care of your hair ladies!!

I hope that lil “At times, it also felt like black women, in particular, were being belittled and slapped in the face for how many of us choose to care for our hair.” comment is not trying to allude to the thinking that people who have natural hair do not care for it. That sentence needs some clarifying.

i am thinking that premiere was rite around the corner last nite & i missed it! i have a problem w/ all of our beauty secrets and hair care regimens being put out on blast like this and no other nationalities secrets are all out there for others to ponder. I’m concerned this movie is gonna make it seem like the average black woman spends $3000 a month when she only making 2000 or less to keep up her hair just so she will feel accepted in society/beautiful/desired. This is bull b/c the majority of us do not do this!

I understand we might spend A LOT considering we don’t make up the majority of nationalities bringing in all the wealth but that clip of the movie I saw on Jay Leno last nite where Rock was in the salon and the beautician was saying that working ppl such as a woman sitting in the salon and getting her hair done were spending 3000 on a wig I’m like that is too much. We do not all do that and we are not all tryna be with the “white is rite” mentality. I do not like that perception being out there!

I dont think the point of this movie is to say people shouldn’t excercise their freedom of expression and alter their appearance when they choose to.

Chris Rock is however highlighting the “crippling” effect of wearing a weave all the time. And that yes, black women are most guilty of this. Like someone already said, a weave,a wig or whatever should not be worn as crutches b/c you dont like how your natural hair looks and feels. That is called self hate. So many black women hate on themselves other black women and their children in this way,

No, being natural doesn’t make you more righteous but it does mean you have risen above the crippling effect of the weave. Some women in general wont leave their house without makeup. Metaphorically too many black women are choosing not to leave the house without their weaves…its a dependency issue.

Perms are chemical poison for your hair period. It’s been proven. If perms aren’t helping our hair then why do so many people get defensive about it. If a perm added nutrients and helped you get “good hair” then ok. But seriously we as black women need to evaluate these “crippling” devices a little more at least with a weave you’re not poisoning your hair but in most cases a good weave that “looks natural” requires a good perm. Double edged sword.

I’m natural and when I dont feel like braiding my hair every night or what people want to call the hefty regime of taking care of natural hair, I’ll put in some braid extensions which 1) can be worn without a perm 2) is not pulling out my hair as long as I take it out in (1-2 month) time frame that will preserve my hair line…

I think some people are missing the point of this whole movie….Chris Rock isnt saying that weave’s and extensions and such are BAD. Like some of you pointed out, his own WIFE wears extensions and stuff. He’s just researching the thing that black folks have been talkin about for years (hell, decades even)…which is, WHAT IS GOOD HAIR? And do we weave-it-up nowadays because we’ve been brainwashed to think that the silky sleek hair is better than our own naturally kinky hair. I’m sure @ the end of the flick he’s gonna bring it all into perspective as to why we are how we are. I dont think the movie is going to poke fun @ people who wear weaves…..he’s just gonna have a good, funny time while he’s on his journey to find out what’s good hair. Lol! Basically, he made this movie for us black folk who can sit back and laugh about the whole ‘notion’ of good hair and how we act about it and what it means to us. But he also made it for the white folk who dont understand it.

LB: Yes, everyone has issues, but when a BLACK child comes to her BLACK parent and very specifically refers to her hair by saying, just like Kris Rock’s daughter did, that she wants to be white or get a perm so she can have hair like white people or she thinks she is not pretty because she doesn’t, THEN THAT IS A HAIR ISSUE AND A SELF-ESTEEM ISSUE.I don’t hear stories about little white girls going to their parents saying they want to be black so they can have hair like black people.

You know they probably have little white girl ask why can’t their hair poof out like ours, but i don’t think they make such a big deal out of it. I remember when i was younger their were a few little white girls that asked their mother if they could wear their hair like ours, multiple pony tails and bows. Most white kids have a couple or wear their hair down. I think that everyone wants something that they don’t have. However, the problem is that when the child is young parents are starting to create this distaste for natural hair at an earlier and earlier age.

I like wearing my own hair out though but I have not wore it unrelaxed and out since i was a child. I see people with long thick hair who seem to wear their hair in a ponytail their whole lives. To me that is worse than someone with a faboulous weave. And why would anyone be upset about the condition of someones hair underneath their weave. as long as it aint yours why should u care.

I agree with whomever runs this website. It is good that Chris did a documentary about hair, but it all seems to lead back to BLACK women…not women in general. There are a lot of generalizations/assumptions and I’m just tired of it. Black women — and black women do this to each other — are called “chickenheads” or “bald-headed” if you have short hair. And then if you put a weave in, then it’s “weave-wearing bitches.” I just don’t want other folks ASSUMING that Black women need to put in hair to feel/look prettier.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it seems as though he didn’t depict anyone with natural hair. I think that is very biased. How can you do a movie about hair, especially if it turns out to mock us, and not show the other side? There are plenty of sisters out here rockin’ the natural and are PROUD of it!

However, it just seems curious to me that even Melyssa Ford has to don the wig when she goes out, after she been rocking her natural hair since the movie started getting buzz.

Im sorry, I just hate that it seems like unless you have curly hair, or are named India Arie, then it’s not pretty or acceptable to wear your hair natural. I feel like Black women don’t really appreciate their real beauty.
In the same way Chris told Solange how pretty she was after she cut her hair because she wasn’t ‘generic’ pretty anymore. All these women look GREAT, but kinda generic. Like they’re rocking their weaves in defiance or something.

My hair is long and thick, and it got even longer wearing the weave. I said by Dec i’m going to start wearing my own hair because i’m tired of paying money for a weave. Plus i dont want to have to worry abt the receding hairline as well.

And frankly why is it anyone’s business? Tell me why anyone is concerned about hair in this manner, while people are dying in Iraq every day, children are starving and going to bed hungry every night, and this man makes a movie ,that needed to be made? That answers questions, it’s important OMG!!!! What is wrong with this picture? I am from an interracial family I do not have to perm my hair, I do not have to wear a weave, I do not teach my daughter to worship Caucasian hair, Children are a product of their environment , they are not born with any biases, it’s family member and movies like this , that make their lives miserable. The movie is called “Good Hair” because it a term that has been used so often by the black community, that Chris Rock’s daughter (and many others) think there is a such thing as “good hair” vs. “bad hair”. He made the movie in response to his daughter being upset that she didn’t have “good hair”. He wanted to get the idea out there that hair is just hair however you wear it… it’s not “good hair” just because it’s long, wavy, wash-and-go hair.
