This debate seems to happen often about whether or not Beyonce actually writes her songs as she claims. All while listing herself under writing credits for those songs. Every now and then a writer will come out the woodwork to say they wrote the song and Bey and her camp didn’t. These songwriters (and others) say B’s camp either pay to have Beyonce’s name replace theirs, or the Knowles camp just replaces it on their own. Then drama would ensue in the gossip mill.
I received an interesting letter from a former Sony (Beyonce is part of Sony Entertainment) employee. This person has been corresponding with YBF and many other sites for years on official artist and music news directly from the company. But now that said employee has been recently fired, they want to confirm that the rumors are true about Beyonce’s songwriting.

Michael Bolton, Lionel Ritchie, even someone was claiming they wrote some of Michael Jackson songs and Michael took credit. Who’s to know! Who cares. The songs jam and everyone gets paid. To the person who got fired. Perhaps this is why you got fired. You better hope no one ever finds or figure out who you are because you will never work again. See What Linda Tripp is doing now. Stand in the unemployment line because a lot of us don’t have a job right now and sorry but they probably know who you are not since you are fired and you worked for Sony. It will be easy to track you down now that this story is out and when they do your background check trying to get another job.

It’s deceitful, plain & simple. If any of you wrote a paper in school and someone found your paper or you shared it with them, they then took it & credited themselves as the writer, wouldn’t you be upset?

I agree. I don’t care who writes her music (people will buy it anyway and her songs aren’t that deep to begin with) but, I am a firm believer in respecting someone else’s work. Passing off material as your own when it’s not is not OK. Plus, there are 4-6 different names listed under the writing credits of her songs. She could add a word and her name would be listed. If you really write your own songs your name is the only one underneath the title (i.e. many Michael Jackson songs) or often there is one other collaborator. At the end of the day, she’s still fab and will keep on doing her thing. **shrugs shoulders**

If they are making false claims that Beyonce paid people off then that is indeed slander on their part if it is proven not true. Beyonce has garnered awards by ASCAP, the firs tAfrican American female to do so, and TRUST if she messed up in that way, noone would want to work with her again. She has a stellar rep in the industry, and that’s why writers and producers continue to work with her. You can’t deny what she brings to the table.

It is a known fact that within the industry that A LOT of so-called songwriters are not writers at all; they are singers who demand partial or full-credit. A new songwriter will gladly fork over partial or full-credit in exchange for an opportunity to make a name for him or herself as a songwriter. This is a shame because the singer is clearly taking advantage of the “TRUE” songwriter.

I totally agree with Leema.
I am a Bey fan and I know she is NOT perfect like a lot of people believe she is. I also believe that Bey has not written every song she claims she wrote. Example–When Neyo put Bey on blast for saying she wrote Irreplaceable–when Bey only helped with the production/music/melodies. Neyo wrote all the lyrics.
BUT, Beyonce has to be doing something VERY LEGAL about the songwriting because NO ONE has ever tried to sue her over these songwriting credits. If Bey is only helping with the melodies like she did on Irreplaceable then she is legally a songwriter and she gets a songwriting credit. If she didn’t help with the song at all but she paid to have a songwriting credit then that is the songwriter’s fault for giving up their work for fast money–and it’s legal because she paid for it. Because if Beyonce is REALLY stealing people’s music and putting her name on it–like they say she is–then why haven’t they sued her?? Just a question.

Having worked at a major record label as Assistant to Marketing Exec, I can say that most of the workers DO NOT know what is going on with their artists. They hear and read rumors just like everyone else. The only ones privy to any information are the President, the A&R who is working with the Artist, and maybe the A&R’s assistant.
Now, I have no clue if Beyonce writes, or has ever written on her album, BUT I will say that EVERYBODY takes credit for other people’s work in the industry. Before Scott Storch was anybody, he was producing tracks that other major producers take the credit for. Artists give an unknown a chance, take the credit for it (in belief that their name will make it seem more credible, or impressive) and the unknown takes his money and puts on his resume that he worked with such and such. Sooner or later, they become popular in their own right, and they do the same thing to some other unknown.
Why do people care whether or not this girl writes her own music? I don’t even get this big deal about people being a one man band. To paraphrase Clive Davis, a songwriter should be a songrwriter and a singer should be a singer.

Keri Hilson claims that she writes all of her songs and songs for other artists like Ciara, Ashanti, Omarion, Britney Spears and the list goes on. However, I had to find out on my own that Keri Hilson is apart of a songwriting group called The Clutch. It’s about five of them in the group. I have never heard Keri Hilson give credit to the other people in the group. I’ve never even heard Keri talk about being in the songwriting group. She just says, I wrote this song and I wrote that song–when in actuality up to five people may have wrote that song. Also, if at least two people in the group write a song, the entire group gets credit for the song. Therefore, there may be A LOT of songs that Keri never wrote–or didn’t write on her own–that she takes credit for. And I’m not taking anything from Keri because I think she is a talented songwriter–but I don’t hear people yelling about Keri not writing songs but taking credit for them. I’m just saying….

True talent? Well, when it comes to performering, Beyonce has talent, IMO. I also think she can sing.
But being famous doesn’t always equate to true talent. I believe some of the truly talent singers get no voice in the industry because the industry is based on image (ie Britney who can’t sing worth a dime). And there are a LOT of truly talented singers who get no voice in their talent…ie Tweet, Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Faith, Goapela, etc….the vocal range and the depth of soul that comes through….talent to me is how some one can capture and personalize their message and audience.

When he presented Quincy with the tape , the song melody , everything was already written. Paul Anka is just bitter. How can michael stael something he CO-WROTE. If that was the case, y did he agree to 50% of roylties and (2) y didn’t he make noise in 1991 when the artist Sapphire sang the song .I mean she had to get permission from both Mike and Paul Anka.

They say Beyonce doesnt do anything, but he/she clearly states Beyonce recieves credit for “vocal arrangements”. Which I believe becuase if you strip the beat from alot of her songs there are harmonies you would never notice. So there is where the credit comes from. Agreed. These blogs are so d.amn backwards. When she feeds the hungry or wins Billboard awards that’s not front page, but when it’s either A. Made up articles or B. Fake stories put out by “fired” employees, then it gets full page. Yet people say they are “tired” of her. Beyonce is somewhere performing, and laying low key to promote her latest project. Yet stories are still put up to generate traffic no matter how bogus they are. You are definitely write about Amanda Ghost. She thoroughly talked about the writing process with Beyonce on her album, how she conveyed to her what she wanted the song to capture.
If you ever hear any demos, you’ll see that Beyonce takes it to the next level in performing. She goes above and beyond. With her the song always ends up better performed as well. Arrangements changed drastically sometimes..so it’s clear that she brings ALOT to the table and shouldn’t be discredited.

This is nothing new! REality is Beyonce has several lawsuits against her for stealing the music of several artists noth known and unknown. She will take a song and change something like “baby you can” to “boy only you” and then claim to have written the entire son due to changing three words. Yes, it may have 3 other names under the credits for songs but none of those names are the people who have originally written the song. Ok, yes there are lots of people who steal songs but does that make it right? No it doesnt.Thats like saying its ok to drive without insurance because lots of people do it. Yeah they do it, and havent gotten caught but when you do, there will be consequences. If someone writes a song for you, dont claim it and take credit for it! I saw a YouTube video of Beyonce writing songs for her B-Day album too. I saw that video a few years ago. It was a video of Beyonce, Angela Beyince (her cousin and personal assistant), and I think at least one other person. They were in the studio writing the “Upgrade You” song with the beat playing in the background and pen and paper writing the lyrics. There is video of them writing it but I guess Bey didn’t write that one either.

This letter reeks of a bitter ex-employee. If you are going to write an email discrediting someone as well-known as Beyonce Knowles, you need to write in proper English. The email was full of grammar mistakes. Also, if you look at credits in the song, Beyonce is not the only name listed in writing/producing credits. Third, in the recording studio, there is only a few people present [most of the time]: Producer, Engineer(s), sometimes the songwriter, and the singer themselves. The employees that do the regular 9-5 most of the time is not privy to the artist work before the album is completely mastered and is 3-5 weeks before the release date.

I hate to say it, but that’s how the music bid-ness works. Beyonce isn’t the only artist to do it. I’ve read about a writer who said a very popular male R&B artist’ camp paid him off handsomely so the singer would get credit for songs he didn’t write…so it happens.
The only artist I ever heard publicly say that they leave songwriting to the writers is Aaliyah. She gave credit to all her writers, esp. Static, who wrote a lot for her.

Now I understand the business and songwriters who work with such artist take that risk. Some want it so bad they’ll sign their rights to the song over to the artist so that they can get some recognition and possibly launch their careers, its a flawed cycle. At the end of each day, she is a good performer and she hits it on the head in every show. I went to her show in Las Vegas and when I tell you I got my 500.00 worth. I DID!!! I don’t think it will ever make a difference at this point in her career. Beyonce has accomplished a lot in the music industry and has unbreakable records. We all know that she didn’t have a childhood and they we’re home schooled for many years. Yes, her camp should’ve made the proper arrangments to prepare better for interviews and speeches, but that the world of being a celeberty. I do not know why this bitter ex-employee is trying to bring Beyonce down. Look, I bought Sasha Fierce and if you look at the credits for songwriting, Beyonce’s name is listed along with several others- it is a collaborative process. I do not know what percentage of the song one has to write but If Beyonce only writes ” If you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it” and nothing else for “Single Ladies” then she gets credit, it may not seem fair to the outside person but it is fair for the industry.
A dispute was just settled about the new MJ song and it turns out he did not write the whole thing and now the estate has share 50% of the proceeds with some guy. As long as the songwriter is getting paid, all is well.

Beyonce gave Neyo credit for his songwriting on B’Day, even before Irreplaceable came out. I remember seeing her on MTV prior to the release of B’Day, and she mentioned Neyo and few other people that helped her write the album. Yes, there is footage of Beyonce behind the scenes while making B’Day, and she talks about the songwriting team that assisted her with the album.
Melody counts as songwriting, not only lyrics.
When Beyonce said she wrote Irreplaceable. It was only one time in concert. She was just trying to have some interaction with the crowd. She said something like, “I wrote this song for the ladies.” I hate when people try to act like she said this in some major publication or tv appearance. Technically, Beyonce can say she wrote Irreplaceable because writing melodies counts as songwriting.
If anybody really cared, they could go look at the CD booklet and see Neyo’s real name on the song. Again, she had publically given Neyo credit a few times before the album came out.
Beyonce hasn’t had a lot of lawsuits against her. I think 3 to be exact. It’s funny to me how people never point out the lawsuits brought against Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey or white artists, etc…I guess their half whiteness or whiteness makes people less suspect of them. Because we all know that white equals goodness. SMH.
Well, the first two lawsuits brought against Beyonce the judge didn’t find any similarities between Beyonce’s songs and the plantiffs’. I know with one of the plantiffs this woman had sued a ton of people, and she was never proven to have previously written any of the artists’ songs that she claimed. The point is anybody can file a lawsuit. It doesn’t mean it’s valid.
The third lawsuit was more against Sony because they didn’t secure the rights to use the Desiree song for Beyonce. It didn’t have anything to do with songwriting. It was more a record company slip up not securing the rights to use a song.
I admired MJ as artist so much. But people seem to think that he wrote everything by himself. You need to check the credits and know like even on Thriller that Quincey Jones and Rod Temperton made huge contributions.
Beyonce speaks fine to me. She pretty much comes across like all celebrities. Plus, many people aren’t the best public speakers. A person can be shy and hate speaking in front of people. I guess that would be magnified if I knew I was speaking to millions of people at any given time. It doesn’t mean the person isn’t smart or artistically gifted. Maybe they’re just better putting pen to paper.
Because some of you’re talking about how Beyonce speaks but what about MJ. He didn’t come across as extremely articulate in front of cameras. Beyonce is a much better public speaker than MJ was. Yet you think that he wrote all these great songs by himself. I’m not trying to reflect negatively on MJ. Because just like Beyonce, I feel like they’re both intelligent and extremely gifted people. I just know that everybody has strengths and weaknesses.
All this songwriting crap started because some white racist writer got mad because Beyonce won the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award. He was just angry that Beyonce was the only black woman to do it, and the second youngest person to do it. So he wanted to discredit her songwriting ability. It’s a shame that black blogs would keep running with such negativity against one of own. If anything, you should be helping Beyonce clear her name. But it just seems like black people only know how to hate on other black people. What a shame.

I don’t know what is hard for people to understand. Beyonce has written and co-written songs. Sometimes she has done it lyrically and sometimes melodicaly. Sometimes she’ll do both things. I’ve never heard Beyonce say that she has written every lyric and every melody to all her or DC’s songs. Beyonce says that she is a songwriter, which is true. I remember reading in an article a long time ago, Beyonce said that she used to give suggestions to change something in a song. But that her and her father didn’t know at the time that you’re supposed to get credit for anything you add to a song. So producers and songwriters would use her suggestions but not give her credit. I heard MJ say he wrote songs. I rarely ever heard him say me, Pookie and them down the block wrote songs together. I never really hear any artist say how much about the people that helped them on their songs. But when you go look at their CD booklet you see other names there. When are some people going to let the DC split go. It has been over 12 years now. People don’t complain about The Beatles’ split like this. Groups split up all the time. Sometimes they do it before they hit the spotlight, and DC just happened to have some notoriety when their’s happened. It’s always been so funny to me that when Matthew Knowles was paying for everything and managing the group for free before they hit the big time, LeToya and LaTavia didn’t have any problem with his management. But when they got about two hits, and Beyonce stood out in most people’s minds that’s when they were being done so wrong. I hope people know that LeTavia and LeToya wrote a letter to Matthew 2 weeks before the Say My Name video and said that they didn’t want Matthew to conduct anymore business for them. The letter was printed in the February Vibe 2001 issue. The record company said that it wasn’t a good idea for the group to have multiple managers, since the song/video was critical to keep building the success of the gorup that’s when the call was made to replace them. I mean if you tell somebody not to conduct business for you anymore a video is business. So all that sob story that LeToya and LaTavia gave is just ridiculous. Like I said, Matthew had been managing them for years where was the problem before they got some fame. In either case, LeTavia and LeToya said that Beyonce wasn’t to blame for any of it.

There are several music artist’s that haven’t recorded new music for sometime, but the music is used in commercials or some type of advertising..because an artist’s music lives beyond them. When you receive a writing credit, you receive the monies from these ventures. So let me get this straight……You have to be an English teacher or a novelist to hold a decent conversation. The only thing people are trying to say is that a person who does not speak well, USUALLY, (not always), does not write well. ISongwriting is more than just stringing a list of owrds together….the song has to make sense.
I really like Beyonce, because she is talented and gorgeous, but I don’t think she honestly writes her songs. People will continue to buy her records of course and that’s good for them. My money is not going in anybody’s pocket, much less a dishonest person’s pocket….so if she is taking ownership of something that is not her’s, she needs more than just a moral and self-respect evaluation.

Actually Neyo has sued Bey…google it ppl. Bey can’t even discuss the theme of her own albums. I saw an interview she did in Singapore I was so embarassed on her behalf. She said when she comes to Singapore ppl cant speak English but they know her songs. The thing is SINGAPORE is an on English Colony. Anyone, that she will interact with will speak English.They have one of the best business schools in the world. The Cabbie in Singapore speak better English than NYC Taxi driver. Boy I tell you, B’s camp sure knew which demographic to target to help get her to where she is. These YOUNG KIDS will defend Beyonce to the end, give their right arm, or last breath and the girl could be DEAD WRONG.
With that being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Beyonce didn’t write some of the songs she claims to have written. The thing is, if it comes out that this is true, it’s not going to be pretty at all. There’s something not right in that camp. Well of course she did not write most of the songs on this album for example there are three that she did not write on the I am… part: Smash into you originally Smack into you, Halo originally written for Leona, If I were a Boy written by some lady named Billy Jean or something I could have that last one wrong. Point being that she did purchase the wrights to the songs now they are hers regardless if she wrote them or not. We all know that she collaborated with other writes/producer i.e neo, the dream etc for the Sasha Fierce part.
The point is in Song writting or singing one does not always have to write the songs example luther, whitney, patti label, TLC, etc it is how well they sing the songs. At this point in the game those who should worry about song writting are these lame rappers. Beyonce is so careful on what she sings about she does not want anyone to actually know if it is from personal experince or from a point of view she is singing.
Once she grows as an artist she will be able to write about her pain in her relationship or lack of there of such as Janet and Mariah have been able to . She will have to woman up and reveal more of herself to us in order to keep progressing with that being said she does not actually have to write anything she can pay for it and perform it. All is well in Business and artistry that is the music business at its best

On a music front. Many artist today do the same as Beyonce’s doing. If you’re a starving writer trying to get on then you have to take what you can get, in the beginning, until you make your name. It seems to have been more prevalent in the last 10 years or so than ever. You don’t have many artist who are doing it all. Only a handful like Alicia Keys, Vivian Green, Kelley Price(who wrote a lot for Puffy back in the day a well as her own records), MaryMary write their own records. It’s the same on the guys. Beyonce has the name and as an up and coming writer, you don’t have much say sometimes, if you want to get on a project. Sad but true.
