Paula Patton & Robin Thicke EXPECTING?!+Paula Covers GIANT

@ Last week’s Keep A Child Alive Ball, do we spy a bump?
Just when we were about to put Mrs. Paula Patton on Preggers Watch after we saw these pics of her the other night, the folks over at GIANT say she and her hubby Robin Thicke are indeed expecting a baby.
Paula’s covering the upcoming issue of GIANT mag and she told them she did stop taking her birth control as they were planning for a baby. Now their sources say the couple of 14 years has one in the oven. Congrats may be in order.

Here’s Paula’s gorgeous cover Winter ‘09 by the way.

And her behind the scenes shots:

Paula is hoooooooot!! So is her husband!!!!!! BUT I will like to see Hollywood open there minds to the fact that a woman of color doesnt have to look a certain way!! She is almost a spitting image of Halle on that cover and I will like them to label someone as the next Angela Bassett or Cisely Tyson. The sad thing about it is no matter how much we think we’re not contributing to the stereotype the more we do.

OnOct 22, 2009 at 3:36 pm (Quote) | Reply |
Okay I completely agree. Halle is not a bad actress, but the nude scene got her an Oscar. She is not on the level of the greats in Hollywood or even her peers. Angela Bassett is a better actress but the industry is shaky. It’s like white actresses can get away with not being the most attractive and getting roles, Renne Zellweger anyone? But black actresses only get jobs the more attractive they are.

seasoned married folk say wait a year or two to get married. . .enjoy being married once the babies come, the focus changes. i don’t mind them waiting 14 years to have kids, they have been together since HS (from what i read) so why rush?
they probably did everything they wanted to do (career and relationship wise) before they wanted to have kids, hence her stopping the birth control.

CONGRATS!! I didn’t know they were together for that long. Read this on the takeout blogsite lol. Halle & Gabe move over…

Yep, Angela is fierce! Even Tariji is an awesome actress but she gets little mention.
Although I do think Rene is really pretty, I get what you are saying. You have to be extremely attractive as a black(or mixed race) female to get real accolades.

paula’s beautiful. halle is a great actress whether she had to get naked or not to win an oscar. either way, halle’s shoes are sum big ones to fill

14 years together? She’s only 33. So that means they’ve been together since she was 19 . . thats pretty deep. Congrats to the lovely couple

I hear that….I just got married in March and my hubby wants to wait 3-4 yrs…me…maybe 2ish. I definitely would not rush anyone to have kids…take some time to adjust to each other.

Beautiful pics…she’s definitey gorgeous! And congrats to her and her hubby on the bundle of joy!!!
BUT…why does she even have to be compared to Halle. That is sucj a ass-backwards statement…why they put that on her cover is beyond me. Let it be about Paula.

Paula is beautiful and seems very humble and appreciative of her blessing.
I believe they compared her to Halle as a woman that is not just a pretty face but also good at her craft. That’s not a bad thing. But I agree…I can see it mentioned in the article…but not on the cover like that.

I personally do not find her attactive at all. It’s like she is missing something. She is probably a good person and have gotten by on the premise she is the next Halle: tragic mulllato. Yet, she isn’t so tragic. I don’t know. I always felt she looked dirty, like a wet mut dog. That’s it, she looks like a mut. Some Bi-racial kids just look retarded to me: confused especially if they haven’t decided to pass for one side or the other.
Eventually black will no longer be black, it will be mixed. I especially fell sorry for the dark skinned girls because they are being replaced at a such a quick rate in hollywood for “black light.”
I will say it, I find it so offensive when some of them say they are mixed. It’s like you don’t get a freaking black pass, you still come from a slave. That’s what makes us black. What black person doesn’t have a white grandmother, aunt, uncle, great grandmother, so is it now based on percentage. Are we going to pull out the brazil fraction scale? It’s not jealous cuz i’m a black male, the huge reason why there are so many damn mixed kids. And if read another story about a black male knocking up some white woman and not staying around, I swear i will scream. There i said it.

I have a problem with the cover of Giant, Patton looks amazing obviously but what’s up with “The next Halle Berry” granted Halle is a talented actress why would they compare her to Halle almost like she’s aspiring to be the next Halle. They are both beautiful and talented actresses in their own right. Although I was also guilty of this the first time I saw Patton, I thought she reminded me of Halle, but the point is they are different and amazing people in their own way

I am black, both parents are Medical Dr’s from Ghana working in London. No White anything in our F-Tree.
So, when u talk about being Black, remember some of us are NOT children of Slaves.
I have lived in London all my life and had the lucky to travel with my Parents due to Dr’s without borders and through my travels I really find some of the Black Americans, Black South Africans, Black Kenya’s and the Black West Indians mind set very sad.
Some of you guys really let the white ppl win especially when you do not focus on Education but on sex and degrading black women in any shape and form.
Who cares if Paula is light skinned or mix race. She is great at her job, University Educated, very talented and Married.
Some of you black men post rubbish about her or talk about her being mix race but would you date her or would rather date a Vid Ho, b/c in reality you would not be able to hold a conversation with her. You would not marry her and you would might even beat her up b/c she is too smart for you. This is why most attractive black educated women go to the other race.
Another thing, if you keep aspiring to be like the Brazillian’s good luck to you. To me Brazil is NOT a success story…its a ONE big failure.
Portugal discovered many amazing countries many centuries ago. They shagged as many black women as they could. They discovered some of the most beautiful islands too…but they left those country poor and left those countries with war…See Mozambique, Angola and Brazil as a for instance. Brazil is a very very poor place. Where the goverment can wake up and take 100s of kids and kill them. 1000S of kids vanish every month. So, please do not joke about want to be like Brazil or be Brazillians.

Im sorry, but I am so tired of some black people claiming Halle got that Oscar for the nude scene..that notion just reaks of caddiness. Halle would have won that Oscar regardless..because the point of acting is playing a character far from yourself..Halle did that in that movie. Her performance was the best performance that year. Would you say the same thing about Kate Winslet who won an Oscar this year for a movie she was nude alot of times in? They are actors…I realised out of all the critisim Halle recieves for that scene, that is the only sex scene she has ever had. She has only been nude twice in films (Monstars Ball and Swordfish)..I just dont understand what all the noise is about. You would think she was a pornstar the way some black people acted over that scene in Monstars Ball. A lot of black people in that industry and out were barely even thinking about Oscar untill Halle and Denzel brought it back around and won that night..so they should be thanking them…there hadn’t been black people who won in a while before that.
Its you’re opinion if you think Halle is not among the greats or even her peers (although you’re stretching a little)…but IMO, Halle is one of the more versitile actresses there are. Angela Bassette is probably the only black actress right now that I can say is a better actress…but thats about it. As much as I like Taraji or Sanaa or Gabrielle…their acting is limited. My point is there is always someone better then the next…doesn’t take away from the fact that Halle is very skilled in her own right. I dont understand why there cant be room for everyone. And Angela Bassette turned me off when she was smiling in Halle Berrys face Oscar night..and crying with Oprah when Halle won, then turning around and claiming she turned down the role because she didn’t want to “prostitute herself out” (in which the creaters and director of the movie later said they never offered Angela the role in the first place), what type of nonsense is that? Im glad Halle called her out in Essence Magazine for that nonsense.
Sometimes I feel like the only reason why some black women pick on Halle is because she’s bi-racial…and they dont like the fact that a bi-racial woman gets held up as the “baddest black woman” (or whatever)..they are so irritated with her (for whatever reason) they just want someone to take her place so bad. Halle Berry worked hard just like everyone else works hard…she deserves her spot because she went after it and snatched it. Regardless of what you think of her there are no other black actresses that has as many versitile awards as Halle or comes even close to the money Halle gets paid per film. I respect her because she is not afraid to take on versatile roles even when she knows she’ll get ridiculed (specifically from the black community) for it. Paula is just as beautiful as Halle and seems just as beautiful inside as she is out…I wish her the best, but she has a long way to go before she reaches Halles level of achievements.
OnOct 22, 2009 at 6:31 pm (Quote) | Reply |
I agree with this statement..i think Paula has enough skill to make a lane for herself and not have to be the next anyone but her.

I like them as a couple. She lost the baby back in 2008. So I guess she needed some time to heal (emotionally). Paula has that Halle Berry look to me and yes she’s mixed her mother is black and her father is black and white but I think she looks like Halle and so people compare the two but they are both beautiful ladies. I don’t think it’s wrong to compare them and both Gab and Robin are cute too.

I stand by my comment and here is the reason why. After the hundred of thousands lost on the voyage to america. After over 300 years of slavery, and another almost hundred years of jim crow and segregation. After all those who died in the civil rights movement, who march, so that blacks (not bi-racial, not i’m mixed) could have equal rights in this country, I personally find it offensive so those who come from the same roots, the same slavery in their blood as I do can suddenly call themselves “bi-racial.” It’s blasephomous if you ask me. I’m not saying you can’t acknowledge your white mother or father or your white side, I have a white jewish grandmother and a creole grandmother, it’s not that deep. I don’t consider myself jewish or French. I consider myself a black american. No fractions, no sugarcoating the past.
What i am saying is that being black is a resposiblity, a moral responsiblity to not forget those who came before us. I feel when people say bi-racial it’s like they are trying to “pass.” or forget. And sometimes I’m a little concerned soon there will be a thing as “mixed” black and “regular” black like paperbag test. It’s happening, look at the rap videos, look at the leading roles in commericals, music, and film. Acutally, as dark brown man, I don’t have that issue. I’m defening dark skinned black sisters. I have a neice who wants to be a model, looks west indian, but i fear where is her audience.
Everytime I see a dark skinned girl on this blog she gets attacked. She gets called a man or something even more vile. So i say, some bi-racial kids who i’ve been taught were automatically beautiful sometimes look retarded. (case in point Whoopi and Richard Pryor children)
I shouldn’t have said some bi-racial kids look retarded and confused, lol. i don’t like generalizations. Maybe i’ve read too many Bell Hooks books.

Bell Hooks don’t say nothing to that extent! At least last time I checked she was not that blunt! I kinda understand what you saying but in all reality biracial people can not deny who they are and should embrace their cultures! I do notice that dark skinned women are usually more likely to be attacked and is said to have masculine features but we all live by the eurocentric standard of beauty so it is what it is. Not much we can do about that living in a country where most people have eurocentric features. One thing I have to add is slavery is not in our blood, although the mental effects are still in our heads! And people like you who continue to dwell on things like this is the reason why our country can never be united!

Actually that statement is very sad and this is coming from someone who has lived in London Half her life, spend extensive time in S.A., Kenya, Egypt, Zimbabwe and traveled to more than 15 countries. This mind set you speak of is found all-over the world in some black people. So let’s stop the sub-grouping.

Neo, Whoever, Liz= the same stupid troll who writes the same assinine comments about biracial black people wherever she goes. She constantly writes a diatribe about black/white couples using various different names, yet she performs somersaults and grins with happiness whenever she see a Hispanic person, especially a Puerto Rican with a white husband or wife. After nearly 400 years of the European Spaniards and enslaving them, destroying their culture and treating them less than human, this Puerto Rican troll and all the others like her, still think that they are European Spanish because the European Spanish owned them and gave them Spanish names. Dark Puerto Ricans are treated like dirt on the island and here in America and are looked down upon by other Hispanics. This particular Puerto Rican troll (Liz Neo, Whoever) is filled with self-hate and doesn’t want to see the white/blacks get along. She has been really pissed since Ben dumped JLO and for a time, she was mad at JLO for losing the white boy. She is a total nut job idiot and believes by coming on to black blogs to spread her poison, she can create friction and get people to rant and rave along with her. She writes nasty comments then answers them using a different names. This is 2009, and black women in America are broadening their dating and marriage options and we don’t give a damn what anyone thinks. We are strong, Independent, and Free To Choose.

wow, Giant is sso tacky with that “the next halle berry” title. It totally minimizes anythings she’s done tot this pt. because now you increase your expectations that she’s going to be “the next halle berry”, when that’s really impossible.
Whatever, Im going to hold off my congrats because the last time we saw Paula in pics with a round belly, it turned out she just ate too much over the holiday season and got a little thickness like the rest of us.
But um, that bathtub pic is fire. How on earth did Robin get so lucky? I hope he knows it.

Uh…. I am NOT the same person as Neo! I always post on here under the same name! And I did not agree with eveything that person said! You definitely did not read what I said! Get out of here! And I never seen the Neo person before, but I don’t think they are a troll either. They just sounded misguided. And Neo was a guy!

For you to “not like generalizations”, you seem to be full of them. Possibly as you said “too many Bell Hooks books” but definitely not enough of some others. Thank god most of us bi-racial folks don’t buy into this crap ABOUT US like some of the rest of you do. If you’re writing to get a response of out people it works. Now if you’ll excuse I’m gonna so back to being my beautiful, retarded self.

Some of the people has lost focus w/ the article. She is an admirer of Halle Berry. It should not matter that she is bi-anything. She has always identified herself as being a sista. Its okay for younger stars to look 2 older stars as motivation 2 move forward in their careers. Congrats to the couple. Wish them nothing but miracles n blessings on their new bundle of joy.

Black women come in all shades and colors and shapes and we are all a part of the AFRICAN DIASPORA. I am biracial, white dad, black mom, and I share two races and cultures; France and America. I guess you can say that mixed raced people are simply a different branch emanating from the same mother Africa tree, but nevertheless we are there and Africa is a part of us. Society and the times change with age and being mixed race does not make us any less proud of our African American heritage. The Western world follows an age old standard of beauty and unfortunately, they make the rules. However, that is also changing with the growing number of mixed race couples. We, as a people, will always be proud of our ancestors and it is progress that we do not live our history, we live for today and the future. And Black people today can marry whomever they want and be happy. I hope Robin and Paula will have a happy, healthy baby in 2010. A new life will sprout on the AFRICAN DIASPORA tree.

Aw, ya’ll hating on Halle. The nude scene got her the Oscar? That’s like saying Denzel didn’t deserve an Oscar before “Training Day.” Halle is a great actress. That chic makes you believe she is that character. I think Paula is a good actress but I wouldn’t say she’s better than Halle. “Perfect Stranger” was the bomb. I loved that movie. Yeah, she’s gorgeous but HB is also good. That’s why she’s still around doing her thing.

Both of her parent’s are black. Robin told a story of her father having a hard time accepting him because he’s from Mississippi. I’m sure someone is mixed down the line. And her and Robin have been together since high school. I loved Paula in “Deja vu.”

Even if she was mixed, and what? Biracial kids are like anyone else, some will look attractive to you and others won’t. And it’s a stupid thing to say that biracial kids don’t look right because that’s a lie. Halle Berry, Shemar Moore, Tia & Tamara Morry, Victoria Rowell and many others can attest to that. Heck, some of my friends and cousins can attest to that.

i see what u are saying but its up to the parents to educate the kid from a very young age of thier history. Alot of black folks aint even up on Black History. I also feel what u are sayin about the dark brown sista, i wish more AA men would stick up for that. but Blk ppl have to learn to see the beauty and value of ourselves and each other and not depend on mainstream media to do it.

wow, I didn’t realize what this post turned into. u know what’s funny, Paula has always referred to herself as “Black”. yet the ‘controversy’ continues…
there are some very relevant points being expressed, but we gotta learn to just let people be sometimes.

My opinion is that the reason why there is so much debate about “black” and “biracial” is that because history shows how blacks were always taught in America that their dark skin and coarse hair is what whites would consider ugly, being biracial is more accepting because your lighter and your hair is not as coarse alot of the time, and I think where the issue lays is that blacks have been brainwashed to believe they are only beautiful if they look biracial. Its sad but what can u do, and Neo is pointing out how that mindset is still very much alive b/c like this person said dark skinned women are constantly called ugly or animalistic, where as the lightskinned longer haired person is beautiful b/c they r black but don’t look it. Only black ppl can stop this mindset. I think all black ppl, whether your mixed or not are a beautiful race of ppl with so many different looks. I’m not biracial so I can’t speak for them, but what I do know is a biracial person can say they are black and noone would think twice, but if they say they r white, ppl would look like how is that possible when u look black, so I think Neo thinks its unfair to try to be both when really ppl will see biracials as black because they don’t look white, I guess???

Ohhhhhhhhhhh please with all this biracial BS. When will we realize that regardless of whether or not who is white in our fam, we are BLACK…period…case closed. People look at my granny and think she’s white…NO, she’s black…and so am I. People think my son is Dominican because of the texture of his hair and color of his skin. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter because regardless of how light our skin is, we are BLACK…stop it.
I’m light and people always mistake me for being PR or Dominican. Nah, I’m black and proud of it. I would NEVER say I’m mixed w/white or something else just for the sake of “fitting in” or being labeled as “exotic”. Niggas really need to get a grip. At the end of the day, we are BLACK…period.
Regardless of how light Paula’s skin is, she’s still black…and BEAUTIFUL.

I think the term Black to describe a people as diverse as African Americans need to change. Black is a pejorative term and it really doesn’t mean anything. I have a lot of racial mixing in my family and folks mistake me for Arab, Indian and even Jewish a time or two and when I tell them I am African American they always look surprised. I tell them that they should know that Black isn’t one obvious look and people should know that by now, but sadly some people don’t unless you obviously look it. But what does black look like anyway? it isn’t just one look right?

I’m black and look like Rashida Jones and I get tired of people constantly asking me ‘What are you?’ or coming up to me speaking Spanish and getting offended when I say I’m not Hispanic and I do not speak Spanish. Personally, I don’t think it is ever going to change with so many different kinds of people coming into this country. People have an idea in their heads of what a black person is supposed to look like and when you don’t match their mental perspective they get confused.

I recently read that there is a growing number of interracial marriages even occurring in some African countries between men from various Europe countries and African women. So it is happening all over the world. I think life has always been this way with people migrating all over the globe at various times in history so this is really nothing new, it’s just that we notice it more now.

The constant debate about who looks black, who doesn’t,etc, is endlessly moronic. How long will we continue to box people into categories?? How long???? Too many of us are stuck in the 18th century. If you haven’t learned by now that just because society wants you to check a certain box doesn’t forever bind you to a particular race/culture - then heaven help us. Some of the comments are so juvenile it’s frightening. The article itself tries to put Paula in a box - why does she need to be compared to the only other black actress that Hollywood as wholly embraced? because people want to constantly put us in boxes and make comparisons rather than let us be individuals. Stop feeding into the garbage.

I am tired of black people, or should I say certain activist minded black people trying to force people to think the way they do. There isn’t anything wrong with a biracial person saying that they are biracial, that doesn’t negate their African heritage and culture. I joined a company last year and one of the women in my unit who I thought was totally white, Italian , turned out to be biracial and that fooled me because I always thought I could tell stuff like that. I only realize it when I heard her talking about Kwanzaa and I smiled thinking it was interesting that she knew about our holiday. Her mother is white and her father is black and if anyone mistakes her for white she will immediately set them straight, but no one would expect her to go around declaring her race all the time. People need to lighten up and stop being so sensitive and let people be themselves.

In the black community there will always be debate over who is black or not. You can say your biracial if your biracial, my point was that biracials that are mixed with black are referred to as black. Our president is mixed but he is constantly referred to as our first BLACK president not our first Biracial president, and even though he was raised by his white family, he is constantly judged because he is half black, you have never seen the country treat a president that they elected as bad as they do Obama and he hasn’t even been in office for a year yet, and ppl are telling him what he needs to fix fast. He needs time, but white folks did nothing but support Bush when he put this country in the biggest mess any president has, but its falling on the black president, I mean the biracial president. Mixed or not mixed, as a black person we are all seen the same by other races but mostly white ppl make judgments about blacks.
OnOct 23, 2009 at 3:54 pm (Quote) | Reply |
This happens all the time with people of mixed race in America. And how you look is dependent on how society will see you. I guarantee you that Wentworth Miller, Grady Sizemore and Derek Jeter are not seen merely as black. Obama looks like a black man and would be seen as such if he did not state that his mother was white. I n other parts of the world mixed race people are seen as mixed race and appropriately so, I as a full black woman have no problems with that since it makes since.
OnOct 23, 2009 at 4:09 pm (Quote) | Reply |
The president may look black but he is mixed, my point is just that, so u can never tell because blacks come in all shades, just like whites and hispanics, but it seems like society only wants the mixed or lighter blacks to be noticed in a positive way, were as full black ppl are labeled as something negative, its never gonna change so there isn’t even any reason for me to comment on it anymore, I just wish all black ppl would be more supportive to each other because we are falling apart with all this negativity.
OnOct 23, 2009 at 4:32 pm (Quote) | Reply |
Wentworth miller I’d agree with you about, because his skin is white. So on sight, he would be treated as a White man. Derek Jeter on sight, is not White. lol, like not at all, so I’d disagree with that assessment.
But I agree with your overall point…people will be treated the way they look (if that was your point). Halle Berry *IS* of mixed race, but she’s also “Black”. I don’t see how anyone could, or would want to, deny this when its obvious looking at her, and also that’s how she’s always categorized herself. Paula may be mixed with a different race, but honestly she’s Black. She’s called herself Black. Her husband always refers to her as a “Black woman”, so why would anyone get upset if she’s not a beating a “I’m mixed/biracial” drum?
Was it W.E.B. Dubois who cautioned against the separation of the Black race based on this very same thing because we would be weakening ourselves, straining to separate from the darker and lighter people because one is more acceptable in society than the other?
OnOct 23, 2009 at 7:15 pm (Quote) | Reply |
First of all, Paula is not mixed race, both of her parents are light-skinned African Americans. I think eventually the biracial people will have their own category because there are so many of them and their numbers are growing in Europe, the caribbean and in North America. The same thing happened with the Native population in Quebec Canada. When the French and Natives began to marry and reproduce they started a whole new group of Native/French people called the Metis. Today the Metis celebrate both their Native Indian culture and their French culture and they haven’t forgotten either side of their roots. Biracial people celebrate both sides of their cultures they don’t leave either side out and I admire them for that. We should just let people decide for themselves and not try to impose what we think on them. Here in America, we practice the crabs in the barrel way of thinking too much. I am a dark skinned woman, fully aware and proud of my Africaness and I don’t feel that I have a right to decide for anybody else. I just don’t want dark folks to be too sensitive about this thing. I have no idea how it feels to have one white parent and one black and have folks tell you to choose between them, we don’t have a right to do that.
