Drama over at 100.3 in Philly! Yesterday, Charlamagne Tha God (Wendy Williams‘ outspoken former sidekick who got his own show) Tweeted about getting fired from the station. He (and everybody else) speculated that it had something to do with that drama filled Beanie Sigel interview a few days ago where Beans fired shots at Jay-Z. And it looks like Jay is indeed the new Diddy (remember when he got Wendy fired for saying he was gay?). The folks over at Media Outrage chatted with a station employee who confirms:
MO: Was Charlamagne fired because of his interview with Beanie Sigel?
Person: Yes, I am %100 sure that he was let go because of his interview with Beanie Sigel.
MO: So you’re not speculating like the rest of us right now?
Person: No
MO: Why would they do that though, knowing that that interview brought high ratings?
Person: You have to understand as I’m very sure that he already does, the station has to maintain an amicable relationship with Jay-Z and his camp because this man is the biggest rapper in the game right now. Infact, he’s not really even a rapper anymore. He’s a business. So you can’t risk ruining a relationship like that just to draw ratings. A radio personality can always be replaced and with the proper set-up, put in a position to succeed. It’s better for the station to replace that person than ruin a relationship with someone who has been on top of the game for years now.
MO: So you are saying that you are really %100 sure that Charlamagne was fired because of his interview with Beanie Sigel?
Person: Yes. I can’t really go into the particulars but that’s what I was told. Is it foul? Yes. This is the business that we are in though.

However, I’ve heard that it isn’t really about Jay, but about some insensitive remarks that more than one interviewee has made about Jews that Charlemagne never corrected them about. He is a radio personality, he brought someone on his show who had something to say and just provided a forum for him to say it. I doubt that Jay-Z is really going around caring that much about Charlemagne to get him fired…BUT wake up people we live in a capitalist society that involves “at-will employment”. That basically means that people can be hired and fired at will by their employer, so I’m not going to act like it’s so shocking that he got fired. Radio stations are a business not a beacon of the 1st Amendment Right…in this situation the costs of Charlemagne must’ve outweighed the benefit of maintaining a good working relationship with Jay-Z. That’s the way the game works. Most of these shock jocks think they have the power to say whatever they want about whoever they want and nobody is going to clap back because they want their music played…but every now and then the pendulum swings and the artist has the upper hand. I think the shock jock radio personalities get the best of celebrities most of the time so if they become collateral damage every now and then, oh well!
