Curtis has been taking some sly shots at Jay-Z as of late, esp. by jumping into the Beans vs. Jay-Z drama on Beans’ side. And recently Curtis talked to Billboard magazine about his “Baby By Me” video. And sounds like he’s still trying to come at Jay in a roundabout way–through his wife Beyonce. Here’s what 50 said about making Kelly Rowland his leading lady in his vid:
“I ran into Kelly at the Latin VMAs, which I attended to perform with Wisin and Yandel, and I asked her if she would consider doing it,” 50 explains. “You can’t forget all the work she did with Destiny’s Child. The difference between Kelly and Beyonce is the extreme focus they put on Beyonce to make sure she was completely right. Kelly wasn’t held in the same regard, so, in order for her to mean anything to America, they’d have to match the marketing dollars spent on Beyonce. She never received the superstar treatment.”
While 50 is known to be messier than most chicks I know, he’s not exactly lying about this here. Y’all know we heart B to pieces around these parts, so no shade intended. But it is what it is.

Um, what’s wrong with what 50 had to say? I mean, it’s the blatant, honest truth. That’s not to say that everyone deserves or will get the star treatment (although I personally prefer Kelly’s singing to Beyonce’s, but back to the topic at hand). But we can look at a lot of mediocre vocalist (Ashanti, anyone?) who were propelled to fame just because they were fed to us so constantly. That IS the difference between not only Kelly and Beyonce, but Beyonce and Chrisette Michelle…Tamia…Deborah Cox… I don’t think that has anything to do with a slight to Jay-Z, even if 50 is the one that said it out loud. It wasn’t even criticism. If Beyonce can no longer be commented on without some connection to Jay-Z being assumed, then I feel sorry for her.

So the hell what if Beyonce was pushed into the spotlight. HER PARENTS dedicated their lives and money to help in the progression of her career. I am not a 50cent at all, but he’s 100% right in regards to the difference between Kelly and Beyonce. Kelly has a beautiful voice and does a nice job acting. I was just having a discussion the other day that Matthew shouldn’t have been the manager for the entire group because of conflict of interest. He’s always looked out of his kids first. Beyonce has had amazing opportunities that was not afforded to the other girls. Solange wrote a lot on Kelly’s album as well as other acts that Mathew managed. On the acting front, “Seat Filler,” was a pretty good movie. Kelly is talented, but like 50 says, she never had the focus on her. That made a big difference. I can’t believe I just agreed with 50 cent but he’s right.

Okay, Kelly didn’t have the focus on her Beyonce had but y’know what DC has been over for a while now and Kelly’s been free to manage and progress her career however she wanted. She chose to stay with the Knowles camp and it hurt her, maybe now she’s out she can step out from the shadow and be her own self. Or maybe not. Kelly does have mad vocal talent, but I’m not convinced she has the self-belief that Beyonce has developed over the years. And that’s the difference. Back in the day Beyonce clearly had confidence issues which she eventually overcame and obviously developed a vision for what was possible for her. Regardless of whether you believe she’s good or not, she’s achieved that.

I agree 100%. In the history of music groups, there has always been 1 major breakout star. Look at the Jackson 5 (M.J.), the Surpremes (Diana Ross), N’Sync ( Justin Timberlake), etc. The other members were left in the dust. I don’t see anybody giving any flack to Justin Timberlake. Some people have it, others don’t. And if I remember correctly, didn’t Kelly release her album first (before Bey became the megastar she is now.) Where was all the support then? She had a huge hit with Nelly, and the album still flopped.
And since 50 cent is so concerned about Kelly, why doesn’t he sign her on his label and give her the “superstar” treatment she deserves.

I agree wholeheartedly. Yes 50 is know to say some foul stuff but I don’t think his comment was intended for malice or wrong-doing. It’s by far the truest thing I’ve heard come out of his mouth recently. I think Kelly does have a better voice than Beyonce (nothing rude to Beyonce at all) but it’s obvious where Columbia and Daddy Knowles put their money.
Ashanti is a terrible singer but has more marketing then Kelly and that’s just sad.
I wish some of these singers who really are great singers and have real content in their music (Brandy especially) got the funding that Beyonce got because there would be better musical competition and not all these ppl trying to make comeback albums.

The fact is no one is going to invest millions of dollars in promotion for Kelly when she lacks star power! You put Destiny’s Child on the stage and its ALWAYS clear who the star is. Kelly and Michelle probably didn’t care anyway because they’re all making money.

first of all this is not a shot at Jayz. No matter how you feel about 50, what he said is the truth and he is not the first to say it. Anyone who doesn’t beleive it is either in denial or brainwashed. Kelly has much success in Europe and other places which proves her talent. I bought all destiny’s child, beyonce and kelly’s cd so I feel I have the right to talk. Ask yourself this how many kelly interviews, videos, singles, performances xmas and thanksgiving specials have you seen with Kelly now how many have you seen with beyonce. I hear what you are saying but i think this goes waaaaaaaay back to how the father positioned the group. I think the public was/is so wired to believe that BEYONCE was the STAR because she was always the one in the front, doing solo projects off to the side, blah, blah because her family constantly pushed her to the center. After 10+ years, people are kind of programmed to look at Kelly as backup because that’s how she was introduced to us. Beyonce knows it, Kelly knows it and Matthew knows it. Its pretty obvious that Kelly became fed up with the situation (FINALLY!!!) and broke way to do her own ish!!!! Kelly – I’m rooting for you – I like it when the underdog laughs in the end. Its so funny how she has never looked better, did more solo projects, toured up and down Europe and Asia until AFTER breaking away from Matthew.

Beyonce and Kelly are great singers. I think the only real difference between beyonce and kelly is clear. Beyonce has had way more success because she’s had better songs. Kelly’s 1st album didn’t sell tht well and her last album flopped. With that being said, we will always remember beyonce. Kelly will be mentioned on th elist of worst record sells ever.

Bey is the best vocalist and performer, also has the “it” factor. Kelly is talented, but has to find her own niche. There are plenty of talented people out there, but all will not obtain the kind of fame Bey has for whatever reason.

Beyonce is overdone. I’m from a different generation so I know her costumes- already done, the singing- already done, the stage performances-already done. The focusing on one as opposed to the other because one is more “marketable”-already done. The fame whoring parents pushing the daughter-Joe Jackson did it best.
Now-back to Kelly-it’s true she has a nice voice and a less scripted style and people love the “machine” that Beyonce is. So it’s all as it’s always been: the cash(or plastic) before anything else.
50 Cent is gonna be 50 Cent but he is right about this.
Beyonce bores me. Kelly is mildly interesting but I would love to see something other than Beyonce’s face for a refreshing change.

I feel like although I loved all of Destinys Child Beyonce always stood out to me and it had nothing to do with her being put out there which if I can recall Kelly had as many parts in DC as Bey hence why Latoya and Tavia were suiing Kelly, Bey, and Matthew because they stated he showed special attention and focus on Kelly and Bey in particular. So am I to beleive the outsiders know more about what was going on than the actual group members? My problem is (although I love Kelly also) she had so many performances and opportunities during performances, videos, or whatever else to show why she is as good or as deserving to be a bigger star then Bey yet she rarely cranked out anything to make you want more, more, more. Don’t blame that on anyone but her because she’s her own performer. While Fifty is entitled to his opinion just like anyone else he comes off constantly as jealous and envious of not only Jay but Bey especially because her name is constantly brought up by him. Wether he’s comparing her to Kelly, Ciara he seems to be mad because he didn’t get her instead. But whatever Fifty keep telling us why you mad. Regardless of him or anyone else trying to downplay her success (like he has tried to do in interviews so many times) she’s still that chick and she seems to get better with the years.

50 should get a chair on the VIEW, he be commenting on EVERYTHING! Kelly needs to let the past go, and part of her problem is hasn’t developed her own sound. When Britney came out she blew up overnight with some random song. She wasn’t heavily promoted in the beginning either. She needs to step it up with the connections SHE has made in the industry. At this point talking about DC STILL just sounds like sour grapes.
