Why is it a question of Jay-Z’s manhood if he chooses to ADD his wife’s last name to his? I think it’s commendable and it shows that he isn’t inflexible. In modern society, a egalitarian marriage is more than equality in the home and in the workplace, it’s about a couple having a sense of togetherness and if Jay-Z and Beyonce feel that embracing both of their last names, and not just his last name would be better for them, then that’s exactly what they should do.
As usual, in our society everything a man does somehow reflects upon his masculinity, and then we wonder where these rigid gender roles came from. It’s almost 2010 people, everything does not have to be so black and white, there can be areas of gray. We need to stop being so narrow-minded. Women have taken their husbands last names since the beginning of time, and now we’re moving towards the future. There’s nothing wrong with men also taking our last name, or at least hyphenating it to their last time.

One of my business school professors had done it. He was a 30-something granola type dude who was all about being enlightened. He said his marriage was a partnership and the name demonstrated that to the world. I think it’s a very personal decision. I have guy friends who are adamantly opposed, I dated a guy once who was open to joint hyphenation and he definitely didn’t seem they type and another who was like my wife must take my name.

I dont know I am ultra traditional so I think him taking on his wifes name is a bit emasculating. If they wanted the family name to continue all they have to do is name the child something like, “Shawn Jay Knowles- Carter”. The child and mother would have the hyphenated last name not the husband. At least in the caribbean that is how it is typically done. My son is a hyphenated lastname for the same reason, my fathers family was short on males to keep the name going. I don’t believe that Jay Z is going to change his names to Knowles-Carter. It just doesn’t seem realistic to me from a man like Jay. If anything, Beyonce can just legally hyphenate her name and if they went to keep the Knowles family name going, they could just give their kids the Knowles-Carter last name.

Sounds like Matthew has the upper hand in this marriage. I can see Solange telling Daddy Knowles ‘hell no’. She has a mind of her own and I wouldn’t be surprised if she was holding some resentment towards him. He will always be able to control Bey & Jay. He’ll always remind her that he got her to the top. Jay is more of a protector than anything else because something is not right with Matthew and Bey. Tina comes off as the mother that had to shut up through it all. Bey will make sure she isn’t like her Mom in the relationship department. Eventually, Jay is going to grow to be just like Matthew Knowles. So trying to find that man that isn’t like your father only to find out later that he is, will be Beyonce’s biggest heartbreak.
