YBF chicks Alicia Keys and Beyonce are taking full advantage of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnivale season. As previously reported, the two kicked off shooting their new vid this morning in the city. They’re decked out in Carnivale gear in many scenes and Laurie Ann Gibson is choreographing.

That ain’t no damn “Brazilian” carnival wear, that’s straight Nigerian material (Ankara is what we call it) made into jumpsuits and dresses! You can cop those for like 15-20 bucks for 6 yards and you can get someone to make these same pieces for way cheaper!
I thought for Brazil carnival they wear nothing but straight thongs, g-strings and bras with the headpieces. Guess they toned it down. I don’t care for the song like that but I love the wardrobe changes. I’ll look out for it. Gotta run and call my Indian connect for my yards before they jack up the damn prices lol smh.

Who cares if they are wearing Nigerian clothes. Seems fitting to me considering Brazil is full of displaced Africans with a history no different then any island or continent and Brazil has the largest population of black origin outside of Africa (obtaining over 37% of all African slaves traded, which is about 4 million slaves).
I like how they did it in the slums…considering many black Brazils do reside (and are ignored) in the slums of Brazil.

Err point of correction there, the fabric is not Nigerian, but popularly call African print, Ankara, Wax print etc. It is worn mostly In West Africa. I’m writing from Ghana, where it’s sold all over for any where between $3 to $20 a yard.

Its Nigerian pride… yea the material does look like ankara, but keep in mind that a lot of African culture pours over into countries where the blacks residing there are of African descent… I mean, most black Brazilians are either Yoruba and Portugese mixed or straight Yoruba or Hausau so there should be no argument when we see Brazilians claiming ankara as their own too.

Starr, you are entitled to your opinion, but Alicia Keys was actually wonderful on the Haiti telethon. I actually thought Beyonce oversang ‘Halo’ (as well as on the Grammys).
Alicia has her own shine. She was named Billboard R&B Artist of the Decade, and don’t forget Bey’s husband got Alicia to sing on the biggest song of his career. She can stand side by side with Beyonce and not flinch, looking just as good and not flinch.

some of you guys who don’t know how they celebrate carnival in the caribbean and South America is saying this is not carnival wear, but it is down there. In the carnivals, you see troops, or a group of people dressed in different attires as they walk in the parade. Some of the attire is traditional african wear, which people wear in the parades as well. There is the traditional african wear, as well as the cutomes where people wear the big head pieces and shiny bikini type outfits like what beyonce and alicia have on. Its all carnival wear people.
