Nelly Talking Ish About Halle B.+Christina & Alicia Make Appearances+ Lil Kim Is "Chillin Tonight"

Nelly says Tip Drill isn't as bad as Monster's Ball So Nelly talked to the folks over at SOHH.com about why Essence will never put him on the cover.  He says there's a double standard of hip hop acts v. TV acts:
You look at Essence magazine, and they wouldn't put a rapper on the cover...They wouldn't put Nelly on the cover of Essence. Why? I don't know. Would I like to do it? Of course I would. Why not? You wouldn't put me on the cover because of the 'Tip Drill' video ... that's probably your main focus," he added. "But yet still, you put Halle Berry on the cover. She's had a 15-minute sex scene with some white guy in front of a couch ... I mean you can't tell me that 'Tip Drill' was worse than watching that sex scene between Billy Bob (Thornton) and Halle Berry. You can't tell me that. That was longer than four or five minutes. You feel what I'm sayin'?
Boy stop. Alicia Keys performed for Hot 97 listeners for their in-studio series. And she was rocking a cute Akademiks sequin hoody. Me likey. Christina Milian's fab self hit up the House of Taylor Jewels event this weekend: Christina Milian at House of Taylor Jewels Christina Milian at House of Taylor Jewels Christina Milian at House of Taylor Jewels Christina Milian at House of Taylor Jewels

So making it because it is a movie will be right? You black woman stay high on some shit.Wishy washy, can't make up your mind. Um when Tip Drill came out Debra Lee wasn't even the head of BET.*blank stare* Someone made this point too: "If Nelly does more for the community, he will have earned the right to be featured, but not at the moment. Halle has paid her dues, not agreeing with all of her work, but she has been respectable for the most part." Don't you know Nelly has his own non-profit organization to find a cure for bone marrow cancer?(probably not) And you know why he did it?Because of his sister died from it.You people kill me.It's not like your lazy ass does something to the community because all you do is "talk." It's a whole another world out there.Like strip clubs thats why the shit got played "at night." Would you not like HBO because they play adult material at night, but they use to run Sex and The City (Which I know some of you love) and the Sopranos, but got highly reviews, but were VIOLENT and highly of Sexual content and it was ran at night? What has Halle done?I'm pretty sure she done something right?Helped out lot of people who has diabites.A lot of rappers help out the community but "conservative blacks" always want to point out the damn negative.I don't listen to much Nelly music and never purchased his CD but I command him for stating his opinion. And he don't have to get a cover on Essence because they put the same blah people on there anyways. If any of you do read Essence, you know Finnesse is in there and he said his bullshit about women...

~~Nelly is so FYNE but I hate

~~Nelly is so FYNE but I hate that Tip Drill video! I don't agree with his point at all. Alot of the previous posters have all made REALLY GOOD points--agreeing or disagreeing with Nelly. I agree mostly with SQUEEKBOX. Yea Nelly (and other rappers) are wrong as hell for the Tip Drill video and other videos that degrade women. But the women are the ones that are wanting to do these videos. We have to kill it at the source--and the source is women. And if the women dont agree to the videos, then there is NO WAY for any rapper to swipe his credit card down a woman's ass. However, I'm sure they will find other ways to get their point across--but still--we women have to stop degrading ourselves by participating in the video. Those girls in Tip Drill were all laughing and smiling and having fun while being called a Tip Drill. Thats crazy!! Money will make people do ANYTHING. ~~Anyway, Christina Millian is so FAB. I love her dress. ~~And Lil Kim--oh lord, please switch your style up! She only talks about sex, men, sucking di**, and any other provocative thing. Can we get some depth to a song? Do what Fifty says--> "Go 'head and switch the style up and if they hate, let 'em hate and watch the money pile up." But hey, sex sells--just ask Nelly.
StarBaby's picture

I'm a little conflicted.

I'm a little conflicted. Nelly has a bit of a point. But he shouldn't even be tryna to still defend "Tip Drill." Yeah...maybe he was made the "scapegoat" for the outrage of the way that black woman are portrayed in videos...but he has to deal with it and truly understand why he was singled out. Anyway...his music is wack and played out...it's time for a new form of hip-hop anyways.... BTW...I cosign on the Debra Lee comment. A black woman who heads BET and cosigns to the denigrating images of black women. *Dead* The things that make you go Hmmmmmm.....

I'm sorry to say that Nelly

I'm sorry to say that Nelly does have a point. Sistas have always been the object of the pale man's desire. Halle was trying to do a different role, but in the process, did do something Angela Basset wouldn't even touch. Video's and Films are all artistic. Sorry to say, but sista's since the late 80's have supported these boneheads & are just now trying to get a conscience about it. Too late. The cat's been let out the bag. When the rap music became popular, all that would be mentioned is how good it is for these artist to do well and not be on the streets. Now that somebody started realizing how negative it makes our race looks as a whole, you want to start throwing stones. Along with dealing, crack, gold chains, & real unnecessary behavior, we want to now call attention to an individual and call him out. Why not talk about Ashanti for being on his arm? or his mother for supporting and allowing her boy to do it in the first place? Somehow we have lost our way. Halle got the award for the nudity & without it, wouldn't have gotten the critical acclaim. I think the bigger problem is we like the music( nothing else gets played on the radio anyway) but we all know at its best, its suspect. The community has lowered its standards and we are seeing the result. In retrospect, Nelly probably would do a different video, but its too late. He made the choice, and so have we by supporting him all this time too. During the MLK day's and beyond, both Halle's work and Nelly's video would have been considered audacious and rude. When is the last time you've seen the other communities women have a credit card ran down her butt or in a movie being pounded by one of us??? Essence is the top black magazine currently, and for the most part has been very well rounded. If Nelly does more for the community, he will have earned the right to be featured, but not at the moment. Halle has paid her dues, not agreeing with all of her work, but she has been respectable for the most part. If we really don't like what we are seeing, as a whole, we have to stop supporting it. You can't be half ass'd about it. The way I figure it, don't support him or his woman's music, stop listening to 50 and others music also, cause its much the same, & when its realized they're not getting the support, it'll stop. But as long as you talk about how cute and secretly wish you were by many of these guy's side, you also are part of the issue, & not contributing to a solution. One more thing, how many of you would object, if Nelly, or any other rapper of today, took out your daughter? Think about it?

I don't know if I agree with

I don't know if I agree with Nelly because I really don't care enough about the reasoning behind his statements. However, Nelly didn't do anything wrong here. He made a video portraying hoe's for what they really are, hoe's. Black women need to stop pretending they don't know "that girl" or have "that relative" that is a straight up hoe and would've love to shake her azz all up in the video. So he used them for what they were or at least how they would like "themselves" (choice here) to be portrayed for a video, ie tip drills. They do not represent me as a black women. People, stop sticking up for these women who are not victims. They are grown ass women who rather we like it or not, actually behave as he portrayed them in the video in the real world everyday. Nelly put this ish in a video, but it goes down like that at parties, the club, the after hour spot. And sometimes that homeboy's house you've never been to but yo man seems to end up at late nights sometimes "playing cards" or whatever. Truth.

It was not "poignant" and was to me so very unnecessary to the whole movie. sad thing halle needed to go down like that to get some respect in hollywood. Still, i get that nelly's got it wrong, it's not about the explicitness of the video but the attitudes and messages it is conveying...now if he talked about how halle was subjected in the movie, i'd get it.

Two points: 1) why are

Two points: 1) why are rappers so overly concerned with reaching venues that would only eviscerate them if they were asked ( i. e. fifty and luda wanting to do Oprah and now Nelly wanting to do Essence). Essence appeals to African American women who see a difference between an artistic albeit gratuitous sex scene and a rapper singing about sleeping with multiple women 2) " it must be your ass cuz it ain't your face" ~Nelly, nuff said

To all the people not feeling

To all the people not feeling what Nelly said---yall kill me! Nelly is a business man, well should I say a rapper first and maybe the video wasn't a good business move, nonetheless, it's to late to take it back. Furthermore, he is right, sex in movies, television or videos are all the same. All of you want to always criticize these rappers for depicting women in a certain manner, when the women need to be held accountable. As a black professional woman, with a nice body, I'm not trying to be a video hoe or take that path---those women in the videos CHOOSE to be in those videos. If they wouldn't agree to it, then there would be no videos. He's not wrong for making that video, quite frankly, I was disgusted by it yet, it was hilarious at the same time to think that women would stoop so low to be in a video---like the late great Tupac "You wonder why they call you bitch!" or should I say "hoe" Moving forward, I don't understand why Essence ban Nelly but exploit, P Diddy & Kim's lifestyle... I tell ya!!!!!!!

I think Nelly is missing the

I think Nelly is missing the point about why people have issues with the whole Tip Drill video. I don't think you can compare it to the sex scene between Halle and Billy Bob Thorton in Monster's Ball because it was part of a movie. A poignant scene within the context of the film. However, I don't think its right for Essence magazine to use something like the Tip Drill video as their reason for not putting Nelly on the cover. Whether or not a rapper degrades women should not be the reason for excluding them from covers of magazines. A more productive standpoint would be to put the rapper on the cover and discuss the controversy inside the pages of the magazine. Hell they put Professional Baby Mama Kim Porter on the cover with her hypocritical ass. Why can't Nelly have a cover, then.
Brittany's picture

Okay, starting with the minor

Okay, starting with the minor stuff, Lil Kim's single sounds like all of her other singles. Highly sexual and excplicit in nature with a fairly catchy beat. I would love for her to try a different route, but money, sex, violence, and a lot of other crap continues to sell. NOW!ON TO WHAT I REALLY WANTED TO TALK ABOUT. NELLY! I for one support that Essence magazine will not put him on the cover. Like it or not, doing the music video Tip Drill will scar him for a long time. And it should. It was one of a plethora of music videos done by black men who constantly profit off of the exploitation of black women and their bodies. Its misogynist. The women in the video had a choice to do it or not, but the fact that he tried to be an advocate for cancer (the disease his sister died from) and says how much he adores his mother, and his lover Ashanti completely contradicts his portrayals of black women today. Period. How would he feel if they were in that video having some of his friends swipe a credit card down the middle of their backsides??? I'm certain he would not like it at all. It's sad to say, but you could definitely classify this as a mirror image of physical exploitation that white men and black male slaves would inflict on black female slaves during the 1800's. The fact that he used a comparison of Halle Berry and the movie she did with Billy Bob called Monster's Ball exposes a type of racial and sexist interpretation of this work. Is the fact that she was a black woman having sex with a white man the problem? There was no exploitation there. But there certainly was when you had black women demean themselves to mere props, who were relegated to only shaking their behinds. When is he ever going to learn the gravity of why Spelman declined to have him perform at their school? I understand that money makes the world go round, but when you are ruining the image of your race's women, it's a slap in the face to every female he ever appreciated. They are not different from the one's he had in that video.
