GREAT DEBATE: Angela Simmons On College VS. Making Millions

Angela Simmons was in college just a couple years ago after graduating with top honors from high school.  She was getting straight A's her first year of college, but her clothing and shoe line Pastry she has with her sister Vanessa was taking off at the same time.  So her dad Rev. Run is talking about how he encouraged her to go for the dough, and maybe finish college later.  And now she's raking in millions: "I don't discourage nobody in my house," Rev. Run said. "This is an entertainment house. My daughter Angela was in college, she was like, 'Daddy, I don't know what to do, I'm getting straight A's in college, but Pastries is taking off.' I'm like, 'Peace college, go take your butt down to the sneaker office and go get that paper...that's your college... We'll get back to [school], Pastries is doing millions.'" It's always a debate for 20 somethings on whether they should choose school and spend money on it or the school of life and make their money. Your thoughts?

You go to school to make

You go to school to make money and to learn your desired field. If she's already going to make money in an industry she enjoys, there's no need for school...Case in point, Bill Gates! :)

@imnotthatstupid You know

@imnotthatstupid You know what though, I have to agree with you bcus once you reach a certain age "campus life" is just different. lol Your more concerned about going to class and then going home right after! I think she enjoyed a good year or two on on campus before Pastry took off though! Not sure

Also, her college education

Also, her college education (I'm assuming she would've taken courses in/or majored in business) would've helped her to more effectively run her business. Run could've hired a business manager for Pastries, which she could've interned with and worked with over the summers until she graduated. There is more to life than just money, IMO. Being young and enjoying the college experience is priceless.

College is cool ..but

College is cool ..but entrepreneurship is BETTER. She did the right thing. Half of the people in college would kill to have the opportunity she has. Instead, graduates come out in debt with expensive drug habits. I went to college & is fortunate to have a high paying job with minimal loans. I think 2 yrs of college gave her the foundation. She can go back at anytime to get the piece of paper. That is all it is. We need to stop focusing on the paper & focus more on the leadership one NEEDS to really make it in America. College is just social promotion after hs. We need leaders who have ambition to be the NEXT bill gates. Angela is well on her way.

I agree with yall he advised

I agree with yall he advised her properly get that money while the opportunity is there. You can always go back to school and is she was pulling in straight A's then I think she will go back because it shows she was serious about it and very driven. She's a smart girl makes good decisions in her personal and professional life so when she sees it's time to do something else I think that's when she'll go back to school. In the meantime ..MAKE THE MONEY DON'T LET THE MONEY MAKE YOU!!!!

Your are in school to make

Your are in school to make money anyway so if you have a productive business then I don't see anything wrong with you skipping school. The online school thing is a good idea though.

How can Rev Run discourage anyone with that double negative opening up his statement?... just sayin
Joja86's picture

I don't think I would've

I don't think I would've encouraged my daughter to quit school I mean-she's already wealthy and attached to the Simmons name-which she could've drawn on later. You don't get 2 chances @ being young and enjoying the college experience...which consists of more than just books and a degree.

We need to acknowledge the

We need to acknowledge the fact that she is not one of us. She is rich whether she is raking in her own millions or collecting her daddy's. This is the life she was given. She can choose millions over college, and if I could I probably would too. Most of us would but we are not all blessed with that kind of opportunity. Most of us go to college to do what we desire. She is doing what she loves and if she decided during or after her career to go back..at the end of the day its her life and college will most definitely be paid for. -Go Girl. She is smart, business savvy, and has the exposure that most of us don't! I say enjoy it!

Education before all else.

Education before all else. That is my belief and am sticking with it. How are you going to keep your millions after you make? EDUCATION, that is how. Hmm, BCK has inspired so many with their hot topics..i like, Natasha.

Her family has money so that

Her family has money so that worked for her. However, she is an acception to the rule. The average person does not have a rich parent that can say later for education; they still have to go to school. She can still get her education is she wants to, but she does not have to rush it.

Only reason why i went to

Only reason why i went to college was to make money. Only reason why i went back to school is to make MO money! Fuck a education, i really dont care about being a "educated black man". I wanna be rich, sorry i know it sounds harsh but its just me. I know i am making more money then "most" people that dont have a degree that are my age. But dammit if i had a way to make more money with out having to go to class and learn then you best know i'd be doing it.
JayRight's picture

Well, we all know she's

Well, we all know she's smart, so she could get a degree anytime she wanted. I agree with her father on doing the pastry thing. life is about taking chances and seeing where it takes you. not everyone who goes to college comes out successful. most people who have succeeded in he business game, didn't even go to college or finish high school. if you've got an idea, run with it! You never know where it will take you but it won't be there forever.

Where did Angela go to

Where did Angela go to college? If she did in fact earn straight As during her first semester or year, then I applaud her though somehow, I am not entirely convinced... Personally, I would have advised her to do both. She could have gone to school part-time in California and though it would have taken her longer to finish her degree, she wouldn't have to wait until she's older (assuming she still has the interested then) to consider returning to the books. I am certainly happy for her and her success, especially since she's so young but you can't put a price tag on an educated mind. I hope she does indeed get her degree. off with her head

I left college 1 credit short. I finished the class online 2 years later. You can do both.

First off, college is for

First off, college is for EDUCATION..not just to make money..you have C.E.O's and entertainers kids going to college and they DAMN sure dont need the money.. It seems that the less economically priviledged you are, the more you see college as a stepping stone to money..not a chance to expand your mind and become more self-aware That being said..he is right though..college will ALWAYS be there and that is something that no one can take away once it is achieved. But college isnt FOR everyone. If you know what you want to do and you are already doing it, why take a $40,000-100,000 detour?? That makes no sense!!

I absolutely agree with Rev

I absolutely agree with Rev Run and the comments about making your money now and going to school later! If you can make millions by not going to school at the moment, then why not leave? School isn't cheap and doesn't always secure top job placement.

Most people go to college in

Most people go to college in preparation for a career. Angela and her sister have jobs and they make the kind of money that isn't likely to fade away that easily. Even if Pastry folds, they will be millionaires and can start a new venture. If she wants a degree for the sake of saying you have a degree, then she can do that at any time. I'm a recruiter at a law firm and every day I get tons of resumes from folks with the whole daggone alphabet after their names. They are unemployed and looking for jobs. I'm sure some of them would trade those degrees for the Angela's position.

College isn't going anywhere.

College isn't going anywhere. She had the opportunity to take advantage of her resources and she did. And look she and her sister are very successful. I agree with her father. Not many of us 20-something year olds have that opportunity, so most of us have to resort to getting a formal education first (nothing wrong with that). But when an opportunity to make "positive" money presents itself.. you go for it.
Miss GQ's picture

Most people go to school to

Most people go to school to get a degree that would lead them to a career in which they'll make money. If she's doing what she loves AND making money in the process, why should she stop to go back to school? School ain't going nowhere. She can ALWAYS go back if she chooses to do so. If I was able to have the kind of career I wanted without going to school, I damn sure would be throwing the dueces at my school now lol

Seems to me like all she is doing is "street modeling" for the paparazi! GO TO SCHOOL! Unless you have REAL talent (which she does'nt) or a RICH FAMILY, Keep your ass in school. She's a millionaire, either way. I feel bad for them. THERE IS REAL VALUE IN LEARNING TO TRULY SUPPORT YOURSELF WHICH IS SOMETHING THOSE KIDS WILL NEVER KNOW. GOD FORBID THE FAMILY LOOSES EVERYTHING, THOSE KIDS WILL BE HOPELESS.

Most people go to college to

Most people go to college to graduate and get a great job and to sustain some sort of sucessful life. As we know, that is not always the case, especially during this economic crisis we are facing currently. With that said, I agree with Rev Run, her time is now. If she is making millions then was is the point of college right now. I am not by any means advocating not getting an education. It is valuable and something that no one can ever take away from you. But if you are going to make millions why not put college on hold for awhile.

Thing is you go to college to learn business...in her case. She already has all ther esouces she needed to start a business. Is there really a reason to go unless you really just want to have that degree. There are plenty of people who stoppped school to persue that dream and don't have to ever worry about anything. I think that she is in a position to go back whenever she feel like it.

Working for someone else all your life and conmplaining about it is BULLSH85!- Entreprenuership is in her blood and to say she is not a "real entreprenuer" because of who her dad is in my opinion- is wrong. Everybody should have the opportunity to do what you love and if Rev Run being her daddy makes it easier for her to achieve that, then GOD BLESS HER!
