President Barack Obama Responds To Osama Bin Laden's Death

Nearly ten years after the September 11 attacks he took credit for, Osama Bin Laden is dead.  Deets inside....

According to the Washington Post, American officials say Osama bin Laden was shot and killed iby U.S. Navy Seals in a mansion-like compounsd close to the Pakistani capital.  And during a televised message to America, President Barack Obama made these remarks....

THE PRESIDENT:  Good evening.  Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children.
It was nearly 10 years ago that a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history.  The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory -- hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless September sky; the Twin Towers collapsing to the ground; black smoke billowing up from the Pentagon; the wreckage of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the actions of heroic citizens saved even more heartbreak and destruction.
And yet we know that the worst images are those that were unseen to the world.  The empty seat at the dinner table.  Children who were forced to grow up without their mother or their father.  Parents who would never know the feeling of their child’s embrace.  Nearly 3,000 citizens taken from us, leaving a gaping hole in our hearts.
On September 11, 2001, in our time of grief, the American people came together.  We offered our neighbors a hand, and we offered the wounded our blood.  We reaffirmed our ties to each other, and our love of community and country.  On that day, no matter where we came from, what God we prayed to, or what race or ethnicity we were, we were united as one American family.
We were also united in our resolve to protect our nation and to bring those who committed this vicious attack to justice.  We quickly learned that the 9/11 attacks were carried out by al Qaeda -- an organization headed by Osama bin Laden, which had openly declared war on the United States and was committed to killing innocents in our country and around the globe.  And so we went to war against al Qaeda to protect our citizens, our friends, and our allies.
Over the last 10 years, thanks to the tireless and heroic work of our military and our counterterrorism professionals, we’ve made great strides in that effort.  We’ve disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our homeland defense.  In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government, which had given bin Laden and al Qaeda safe haven and support.  And around the globe, we worked with our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of al Qaeda terrorists, including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot.
Yet Osama bin Laden avoided capture and escaped across the Afghan border into Pakistan.  Meanwhile, al Qaeda continued to operate from along that border and operate through its affiliates across the world.
And so shortly after taking office, I directed Leon Panetta, the director of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of our war against al Qaeda, even as we continued our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat his network.
Then, last August, after years of painstaking work by our intelligence community, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden.  It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground.  I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan.  And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice.
Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.  A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability.  No Americans were harmed.  They took care to avoid civilian casualties.  After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.
For over two decades, bin Laden has been al Qaeda’s leader and symbol, and has continued to plot attacks against our country and our friends and allies.  The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat al Qaeda.
Yet his death does not mark the end of our effort.  There’s no doubt that al Qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us.  We must –- and we will -- remain vigilant at home and abroad.
As we do, we must also reaffirm that the United States is not –- and never will be -– at war with Islam.  I’ve made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam.  Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims.  Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own.  So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.
Over the years, I’ve repeatedly made clear that we would take action within Pakistan if we knew where bin Laden was.  That is what we’ve done.  But it’s important to note that our counterterrorism cooperation with Pakistan helped lead us to bin Laden and the compound where he was hiding.  Indeed, bin Laden had declared war against Pakistan as well, and ordered attacks against the Pakistani people.
Tonight, I called President Zardari, and my team has also spoken with their Pakistani counterparts.  They agree that this is a good and historic day for both of our nations.  And going forward, it is essential that Pakistan continue to join us in the fight against al Qaeda and its affiliates.
The American people did not choose this fight.  It came to our shores, and started with the senseless slaughter of our citizens.  After nearly 10 years of service, struggle, and sacrifice, we know well the costs of war.  These efforts weigh on me every time I, as Commander-in-Chief, have to sign a letter to a family that has lost a loved one, or look into the eyes of a service member who’s been gravely wounded.
So Americans understand the costs of war.  Yet as a country, we will never tolerate our security being threatened, nor stand idly by when our people have been killed.  We will be relentless in defense of our citizens and our friends and allies.  We will be true to the values that make us who we are. And on nights like this one, we can say to those families who have lost loved ones to al Qaeda’s terror:  Justice has been done.
Tonight, we give thanks to the countless intelligence and counterterrorism professionals who’ve worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome.  The American people do not see their work, nor know their names.  But tonight, they feel the satisfaction of their work and the result of their pursuit of justice.
We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism, and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country.  And they are part of a generation that has borne the heaviest share of the burden since that September day.
Finally, let me say to the families who lost loved ones on 9/11 that we have never forgotten your loss, nor wavered in our commitment to see that we do whatever it takes to prevent another attack on our shores.
And tonight, let us think back to the sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11.  I know that it has, at times, frayed.  Yet today’s achievement is a testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the American people.
The cause of securing our country is not complete.  But tonight, we are once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to.  That is the story of our history, whether it’s the pursuit of prosperity for our people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens; our commitment to stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a safer place.
Let us remember that we can do these things not just because of wealth or power, but because of who we are:  one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Thank you.  May God bless you.  And may God bless the United States of America.

Watch President Barack Obama address the nation here:

Gold bless our President.  God bless our troops.

I agree that I am confused

I agree that I am confused how to feel over the matter. Yes, in a way I am glad that Osama has finally been killed, but then again, like several others have mentioned, who are we to celebrate someone's death? On another note, I freaking love how President Obama personally takes credit for this. The United States has been working on this for over ten years and he steps in and tries to take all the credit. I believe that he uses the word "I" in this speech way too much. More credit needs to go to those who actually tracked him down and the ones who actually put their lives at risk. The US would have caught Osama one way or the other, even without President Obama. Yes, Obama did help all of this to happen, but I believe that he tries to take way to much credit and is only trying to glorify himself in this situation and get more of the American citizens on his side.

They are illegal, and the US led the initial attacks because of Obama's go ahead without congress' approval. This Bin Laden killing and burial is propaganda to keep Americans dumbed down to what is going on in the world. Obama is a puppet like his predecessors Bush and Clinton. Repubs and Dems and certain factions are all friends behind closed doors and are laughing at you. Mainstream media is propaganda, they are working towards a bigger agenda resulting the the masses demise. Signs are all around especially in the US and Japan, yet people continue to worship and trust in these leaders. Things are getting worse and people are in denial.

This is stupid. I was born and raised in New York City and was a couple blocks away from the World Trade Center when the planes crashed into them. I remember smoke, I remember running, I remember seeing people jumping from the buildings and splattering onto the ground. So much death. So much gore. Me and friends (fellow New Yorkers) do not understand why everyone is so happy about the killing of Osama Bin Laden? He was killed just as he killed others. We condemn the man and kill as he kills. Wake up people. We are falling down a slippery slope and if you think Obama's MURDER is liberating you are just as foolish as those who keep fighting in this pointless war. I wholeheartedly believe that our days are numbered just like his was.

Please humanity has been on a slippery slope since the beginning of time... You are certainly entitled to your opinion but this country should be happy that a person with absolutely no regard for human life (even those of his own religion) and with access to hundreds of millions of dollars is no longer walking this Earth. This man had been targeting innocent people since 1993 how else should they have handled the situation? By letting him walk out the back door??? HE choose not to surrender…I mean come on he had to pay for his crimes just as we all do in this life or the next. I think you are putting too much concern in what happened to him and not enough to the people his hate eliminated from the face of this Earth. The 3000 innocent men, women and CHILDREN deserved justice for what was done to them and for what. Our way of life, the way of life for Muslims overseas so much of how we perceive the world was altered because of this man and the sick twisted message he spread literally up to the day he died. I don’t condone they whole eye for an eye but in this case I’ll make the exception.

Very well said! You bring up

Very well said! You bring up a great point! Not only did so many people die, but our perceptions were changed so much because of that day. I really feel like the bigotry towards Muslims the exists today wouldn't exist if it weren't for 9/11. That bigotry is a can of worms for so much other stuff.

You are an idiot! Osama Bin

You are an idiot! Osama Bin Laden didn't go down without a fight! He had the option to surrender and live, but instead he went out fighting. Any criminal in the streets would've met the same fate. So, what? We have the opportunity to capture a man who orchestrated an attack on the country that killed thousands of innocent people who were simply living their lives that morning. The subsequent actions that he ordered and organized to be carried out that day changed this country forever. So instead of taking the opportunity to capture him without causing another American death what should the Commander in Chief had done? Let him slip away and maybe plan out future attacks, or go in and get his ass!? If you were within the vicinity of Osama bin Laden, please believe he'd kill your stupid ass, so what? The Special Ops were supposed to just let him open fire and escape to hide out and taunt the people who lost family members with his bitch ass recorded statements? What kind of bull sh*t are you on? Some people who lost loved ones on 9/11 wanted him to be captured alive, plenty more wanted him dead. Some celebrated, some reflected. At the end of the day, this man is the face of a lot of pain from the people who died that Tuesday, to the firefighters who got lung cancer from trying to help at ground zero. Obama didn't MURDER him you dumb ass. He did his job. What's going on in the world isn't play play. This man was a murder and was living in the lap of luxury, and what is your condescending message saying?? That we should be sad that he's dead? We should mourn him? Or should we have left him alone? Stupid.

You claim to be so pro black, but when our Black president does something that Americans who lost loved ones on 9/11 have been wanting done for a decade now, you equate black people who are proud that he got the job done to being puppets and Barack Obama our master... I don't get it. We really can't win for losing as a race. You knock black women for saying David Beckham looks good, but you equate us to doting slaves when we support a black president. Are you really trying to prove a point here or are you just playing and trying to get some attention? So what should we as black women observing history unfold do? Say Barack Obama didn't get the job done? Become team Sarah Palin? Jump on the birther bandwagon and try to link Obama with Islamic extremists? Say that it was really Bush who did it?? What should we do? You're criticizing, but you have no point at the end of the day...

Propaganda is in full effect

Propaganda is in full effect ya'll. Don't fall into it. This was planned and plotted, held for who knows how long. They waited for the right time to release this "death story." AND since the world and America is upset over Libya, and Gadaffi grandkids being killed they HAD to let this story out NOW. ANd the rush burial 'AT SEA' only further prove the lie to me. Muslims buried at sea....NEVER....As a former military personnel, sea burial is usually awarded to high ranking military and government officials. SO WHY would they THINK of burying him at sea... COULD is be that BIN LADEN was indeed a CIA opperative, that requested this type of burial, prior to his mission, or could it be the US gov't making it possible that NO ONE will ever have the chance to find him and prove the bin ladin story was the biggest lie in US history? His family has strong ties with the bush's, so lord knows the plot that was at work here. Its funny they made sure Kahlid Shiek Muhammad was NOT killed as number 2 in command, but they killed the number 1. Smoke and mirrors, and distraction is the ploy here. No way this man was alive this long and the CIA/FED, didn't know. SO how did they know now? With the help of the pakistan gov't? NO WAY, NO Freaking way.
Anonymous's picture

They buried him at sea

They buried him at sea because no country would take his body. They buried him quickly to cross their t's and dot their i's to make sure not ruffle any islamic extremist feathers that would be pissed that their leader was not only killed, but his body was paraded around the world which would spark sure retaliation and anger. I hate people who have concocted conspiracies who come and tell us "don't fall for it" like you know what you're talking about. Your conspiracy carries about as much merit as a 3 month old's shitty diaper. Shut up.

Okay, so you dispute that

Okay, so you dispute that Muslims extremists would be enraged if on top of killing their leader, we shitted on their beliefs that are EXTREMELY important to them and brought Bin Laden's body to the United States and showed it?? Terrorists deface human bodies, behead journalists and record it, and burn soldier's bodies and flaunt it for people to see. We don't do that as Americans. Keep believing the schizophrenic voices in your head telling you "da man out ta get us!" Nobody is gonna herd me off anywhere, because I am fully aware of my rights. I'm definitely not popping blood vessels over your idiotic conspiracies. And I'm not regurgitating anything the media told me. I'm intelligent to rationalize things. Last night, I said I wanted to see the body. But then i thought about it... Do you think the US would be stupid enough to give terrorists an excuse to go berserk?? Islamic burial tradition says that bodies should be buried within a day. All you have to do is see the way they reacted to what happened after Abu Ghraib to see how devout Islamic extremists react when their religion is disrespected. So what's your idea of what's gonna happen to us?? We're all gonna be herded off to FEMA trailers, then what? We're gonna be exterminated?? Ummm, no. I know history and after events like the Holocaust, do you REALLY think that Americans would allow that to happen? You're obviously crazy. Oh yeah, and stupid.

No matter how you shake it, this is a HUGE political victory. Americans have been hearing about Bin Laden and his connection to 9/11 and the USS Cole for YEARS. There are so many people happy that the man responsible for the horrendous deaths of their loved ones is DEAD! President Obama has been saying that he believed that Bin Laden was in Pakistan since he ran for office. He went on his hunch, used the resources and intelligence available and took his ass out. None of us know the specifics. And we probably never will, but to dispute this puts you in the category of the weirdos who don't believe the moon landing was real. If I'm gonna be in that category, then I'd rather stay asleep! My ROTC teacher told us shortly after 9/11 that there are things that the government knows that we'll NEVER know.
