President Barack Obama Responds To Osama Bin Laden's Death

Nearly ten years after the September 11 attacks he took credit for, Osama Bin Laden is dead.  Deets inside....

According to the Washington Post, American officials say Osama bin Laden was shot and killed iby U.S. Navy Seals in a mansion-like compounsd close to the Pakistani capital.  And during a televised message to America, President Barack Obama made these remarks....

THE PRESIDENT:  Good evening.  Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children.

It was nearly 10 years ago that a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history.  The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory -- hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless September sky; the Twin Towers collapsing to the ground; black smoke billowing up from the Pentagon; the wreckage of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the actions of heroic citizens saved even more heartbreak and destruction.

And yet we know that the worst images are those that were unseen to the world.  The empty seat at the dinner table.  Children who were forced to grow up without their mother or their father.  Parents who would never know the feeling of their child’s embrace.  Nearly 3,000 citizens taken from us, leaving a gaping hole in our hearts.

On September 11, 2001, in our time of grief, the American people came together.  We offered our neighbors a hand, and we offered the wounded our blood.  We reaffirmed our ties to each other, and our love of community and country.  On that day, no matter where we came from, what God we prayed to, or what race or ethnicity we were, we were united as one American family.

We were also united in our resolve to protect our nation and to bring those who committed this vicious attack to justice.  We quickly learned that the 9/11 attacks were carried out by al Qaeda -- an organization headed by Osama bin Laden, which had openly declared war on the United States and was committed to killing innocents in our country and around the globe.  And so we went to war against al Qaeda to protect our citizens, our friends, and our allies.

Over the last 10 years, thanks to the tireless and heroic work of our military and our counterterrorism professionals, we’ve made great strides in that effort.  We’ve disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our homeland defense.  In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government, which had given bin Laden and al Qaeda safe haven and support.  And around the globe, we worked with our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of al Qaeda terrorists, including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot.

Yet Osama bin Laden avoided capture and escaped across the Afghan border into Pakistan.  Meanwhile, al Qaeda continued to operate from along that border and operate through its affiliates across the world.

And so shortly after taking office, I directed Leon Panetta, the director of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of our war against al Qaeda, even as we continued our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat his network.

Then, last August, after years of painstaking work by our intelligence community, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden.  It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground.  I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan.  And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice.

Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.  A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability.  No Americans were harmed.  They took care to avoid civilian casualties.  After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.

For over two decades, bin Laden has been al Qaeda’s leader and symbol, and has continued to plot attacks against our country and our friends and allies.  The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat al Qaeda.

Yet his death does not mark the end of our effort.  There’s no doubt that al Qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us.  We must –- and we will -- remain vigilant at home and abroad.

As we do, we must also reaffirm that the United States is not –- and never will be -– at war with Islam.  I’ve made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam.  Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims.  Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own.  So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.

Over the years, I’ve repeatedly made clear that we would take action within Pakistan if we knew where bin Laden was.  That is what we’ve done.  But it’s important to note that our counterterrorism cooperation with Pakistan helped lead us to bin Laden and the compound where he was hiding.  Indeed, bin Laden had declared war against Pakistan as well, and ordered attacks against the Pakistani people.

Tonight, I called President Zardari, and my team has also spoken with their Pakistani counterparts.  They agree that this is a good and historic day for both of our nations.  And going forward, it is essential that Pakistan continue to join us in the fight against al Qaeda and its affiliates.

The American people did not choose this fight.  It came to our shores, and started with the senseless slaughter of our citizens.  After nearly 10 years of service, struggle, and sacrifice, we know well the costs of war.  These efforts weigh on me every time I, as Commander-in-Chief, have to sign a letter to a family that has lost a loved one, or look into the eyes of a service member who’s been gravely wounded.

So Americans understand the costs of war.  Yet as a country, we will never tolerate our security being threatened, nor stand idly by when our people have been killed.  We will be relentless in defense of our citizens and our friends and allies.  We will be true to the values that make us who we are. And on nights like this one, we can say to those families who have lost loved ones to al Qaeda’s terror:  Justice has been done.

Tonight, we give thanks to the countless intelligence and counterterrorism professionals who’ve worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome.  The American people do not see their work, nor know their names.  But tonight, they feel the satisfaction of their work and the result of their pursuit of justice.

We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism, and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country.  And they are part of a generation that has borne the heaviest share of the burden since that September day.

Finally, let me say to the families who lost loved ones on 9/11 that we have never forgotten your loss, nor wavered in our commitment to see that we do whatever it takes to prevent another attack on our shores.

And tonight, let us think back to the sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11.  I know that it has, at times, frayed.  Yet today’s achievement is a testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the American people.

The cause of securing our country is not complete.  But tonight, we are once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to.  That is the story of our history, whether it’s the pursuit of prosperity for our people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens; our commitment to stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a safer place.

Let us remember that we can do these things not just because of wealth or power, but because of who we are:  one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Thank you.  May God bless you.  And may God bless the United States of America.

Watch President Barack Obama address the nation here:

Gold bless our President.  God bless our troops.

however Americans are

however Americans are unemployed at rising numbers, states are cutting budgets at huge numbers for public schools and universities, the American people are being raped literally at the gas pumps for no reason, there are no jobs however states are building prisons for private profits at an alarming rate, people are losing their homes, cars and families due to economic hardships, working middle class is almost none so I say as an African-American woman I rather here companies are moving back to the states, schools are getting more funding, people that lost jobs are being rehired, the government is actually helping those that lost their homes due to massive layoffs and unemployment, the gas prices are being lowered by at least $2.00 I can go on and on.....I really don't care about bin laden being killed, REALLY!

And meanwhile, you're sitting

And meanwhile, you're sitting on the internet with the rest of us doing nothing. If you are so concerned about this nations problems...get off the internet and go help work on them. Because this President is one of the few people even working on this nations problems...catching Osama Bin Laden may not mean anything to YOU but to a lot of people who lost loved ones in 9/11 it means a heck of a lot, to all the trrops who have sacrificed their time and lives for this moment it means a lot. Your comment is the typical American response these days, very selfish and self righteous, sitting on the sidelines doing nothing but complaining. Have a seat.

hmmmm, he was found in

hmmmm, he was found in Pakistan not even really hiding, he was in a mansion in a wealthy neighborhood, is no one questioning the Pakistini government, how could they not know he was there, who was funding him to live in that mansion? I refuse to believe the Pakistini government did not know he was there, I don't trust any of them, I really don't, they are very sneaky and I don't believe they like America or consider us their alies and I believe he wasn't found sooner cause Bush and the Pakistini government really weren't looking for him, Bush used to be friends with the Bin Laden family and knew Osama, somethings really fishy about this, and the Bush administration was always pushing the notion that Obama was hiding out in some mountain in the wilderness, and he was actually in plain view

You know their asses will still have something fly to say even after the brotha captured the most sought after fugitive in America. I would like to see some video or a pic or something. The whole buried at sea thing is making me want to give the side eye but I don't want to be like whitey and chose to rid with my president. If he says 'ole boy is dead then I'll ride with him on it. I wonder if one of the troops took pictures of Osama on their camera phone???? Hopefully, they'll leak them on TMZ or Youtube. Hahahahaha!

Yes, I wanted them to get

Yes, I wanted them to get him, he did not deserve to get away with what he did to so many innocent people, the 9/11 attacks were devastating, could you just imagine being in one of those planes knowing your life was going to end or trapped in one of those building when it collapsed? I was listening to some of the emergency phone calls from the towers and its disturbing, one was of a woman who called 911 and was talking with the operator crying and then you can see where she was cut off exactly when the building went down, I don't care what you believe in or who you are, no one has the right to kill innocent people for any reason, let alone for political, religious statements, and did ya'll read where those cowards used a woman as a shield against gun fire, they are just evil no respect or regard for human life at all

It took 10 years, 30 million

It took 10 years, 30 million lives (American and Iraqi), and 3 wars just to kill ONE man, and you idiots think that this is progress?????? That is like blowing up a building in an attempt to kill a fly. This is all election fodder.......because nothing is going to change. Iraq, did I miss something?

Iraq, did I miss something? Osama was the cause of the Afgani invasion. I think we can all say the Iraqi invasion was bullshit. You are comparing apples to oranges here. It is the death of the al qAeda leader we are talking about. As an East African I must say I am happy. Beyond terrorizing Americans, they hit Dar' Es Salam And Nairobi far before 911 and are in Somalia now. The only thing holding Somalia back is Alqaeda at this point. The only reason Lybia can't be dealt with swiftly is because they are finding Alqaeda cells with in the rebells. Now that their leader is dead they will need to regroup. And let's not forget how rich this man was. He is from one of the richest families in Saudi Arabia, that's going to hurt a bit. I just hope the whole group as a whole will some how be dealt with and brought to justice. He was one man, but so were Jesus, Mohamed, etc. They had a legion of followers who still support to this day. One man can yield thAt much power.

The number is closer to 1

The number is closer to 1 million. Still way too many, but no where near 30 million. Afghanistan doesn't even have a population of 30 million people.
TruDat's picture

30 million lives? What sky

30 million lives? What sky did you pull those numbers from?
NekeT's picture

but this is why people are

but this is why people are happy they finally got him, since Bush initiated the attacks all the lives lost would have been in vain with out the actual capturing of Osama, and they did intend on capturing him, but they say he resisted and I believe they aren't lying about that because I believe they would have loved to show case his sorry ass around like he did so many captured americans, and trust if you lost someone in the 9/11 attacks you would have wanted some justice as well, but the thing is we lost so many american lives because Bush started a war and ended up having another agenda in Afghanistan besides capturing Osama, if that would have been the ONLY mission there than trust there would have not have been so many lives lost that would have been the sole military concentration, like in this instance, there were no american military lives lost in these operation
Anonymous's picture

co-sign, Bush just charged

co-sign, Bush just charged into Afghanistan with no clear plan and whole bunch of other Agendas than to get Osama, if that was the ONLY mission they would have scouted him out for months, planned, trained, and had a precise operation like this one, and hardly any american lives would have been lost, it would have been just like a hit, get him get out, but Bush started a WAR he put troops in Afghanistan to restore order and police their citizens, he wanted to capture Sadam Hussein, and others, he had some plans to take over oil and other resources, etc. I mean he had his own Agenda that had nothing todo with the American people and the 9/11 attacks but he used the attacks as a cover of what the mission was supposed to be

I don't really know what to

I don't really know what to say. Especially knowing how close the Bin Laden family was with the Bushes when it came to property deals. Also, like Saddam, Osama used to be on the CIA payroll....Millions of US tax dollars were paid to run terrorist camps against the Russians in the 80s. If only the majority of Americans knew this they wouldn't be so proud of this "victory".
