Beyonce Discusses Her New Album Called "4" In The June 2011 Issue Of "BILLBOARD" Magazine

Beyonce covers the June 2011 issue of Billboard Magazine where she speaks about the next phase of her career and why she cannot be defined as an artist.  Read the interview inside....

Beyonce, who will be receiving the Millenium Award on May 22nd from Billboard, recently interviewed with the magazine about her next album 4.  She talks about managing herself, where her career is going and how she understands herself as an artist.

Read the interview here:

Whenever you put out a new song, it seems to generate a catchphrase. Is that something you think about?

That's what I always want to do - I'm attracted to songs that will become a dinner conversation! [laughs] With "Single Ladies," clearly I'd just gotten married, and people want to get married every day - then there was the whole Justin Timberlake thing [recreating the video] on "Saturday Night Live," and it was also the year YouTube blew up. With "Irreplaceable," the aggressive lyrics, the acoustic guitar, and the 808 [drum machine] - those things don't typically go together, and it sounded fresh. "Crazy in Love" was another one of those classic
moments in pop culture that none of us expected. I asked Jay to get on the song the night before I had to turn my album in - thank God he did. It still never gets old, no matter how many times I sing it.

The new album is called "4." Aside from this being your fourth solo album, what significance does that number hold?

We all have special numbers in our lives, and 4 is that for me. It's the day I was born. My mother's birthday, and a lot of my friends' birthdays, are on the fourth; April 4 is my wedding date.

How did the creative process begin with the new body of work?

I recorded more than 60 songs: everything I ever wanted to try, I just did it. I started off being inspired by [Afrobeat music pioneer] Fela Kuti. I actually worked with the band from "Fela!" [the hit Broadway musical based on his life] for a couple of days, just to get the feel for the soul and heart of his music; it's so sexy, and has a great groove you get lost in. I loved his drums, all the horns, how everything was on the one. What I learned most from Fela was artistic freedom: he just felt the spirit. I also found a lot of inspiration in '90s R&B, Earth, Wind & Fire, DeBarge, Lionel Richie, Teena Marie... I listened to a lot of Jackson 5 and New Edition, but also Adele, Florence + the Machine, and Prince. Add in my hip-hop influences, and you can hear how broad it is. I also gave myself more freedom to really belt out some songs, and bring soul singing back: I used a lot of the brassiness and grittiness in my voice that people hear in my live performances, but not necessarily on my records.

This is your first record that you've made without your father managing you. What sort of options opened up that may be different than before?

It's not that anything bad happened between us. My family has my support always, and they support me, but when you've been working with the same people for 15 years, it's natural to eventually have your own ideas. I believe that parents prepare their kids for the moment that they're on their own: at this point, I'm taking everything my dad and my mother have taught me, and I'm able to do things my way. We were at a point where we'd learned so much from each other, and now it's exciting for me to do this on my own and hire my own team. I've started managing myself.

Your film career recently took an interesting turn. You've gone from "Dreamgirls" to "Cadillac Records" to "Obsessed," and now you're working with Clint Eastwood on the latest remake of "A Star is Born."

It's a dream come true; I'm still in shock that it's really going to happen. Clint Eastwood is clearly the absolute best, and I'm so honored and humbled. I was in no rush to do another movie unless it was the right film, and I didn't even want to touch "A Star is Born" unless it was with him. I actually learned that this project was in existence, and kind of claimed it. I want to get to work right now!

"A Star is Born" is an appropriate choice, as it follows the rise of a female singer to stardom. What have been your milestones on the way up?

I would say when Destiny's Child worked with Wyclef Jean on "No, No, No Part 2" - we were so young and green and in awe of everything, and couldn't wait to sing for him. And winning our Grammy for "Say My Name" was incredible. I remember hearing the song on the radio for the first time: I felt like "Wow, this sounds like a classic - something that will be around forever." Those melodies and that fast, staccato way of singing created a new style; it inspired a whole movement in R&B. Being part of that was amazing.

After all those achievements, what was it like going solo?

Scary and empowering! Everyone in the group was very nervous, and terrified to do things on our own. We missed each other; it was hard having to make your own decisions and not have someone there to say, "I agree" or "I don't agree." But going through that is a part of life; it was a big first step for me, but one of many first steps I'm sure I'll have. I kind of feel like that now again.

I'm approaching 30, and finally took a break in my life, which I've never had. I took more than a year off: I traveled around, spent time with my husband, woke up in my own bed, ate whatever I wanted, went to museums and Broadway plays, watched documentaries, and just had life experiences. I never get to go to concerts because I'm usually performing, so I saw so many shows - great bands, like Muse and Rage Against the Machine, that also inspired the album. There were a lot of artists I'd never been exposed to: I'm like a sponge and soak everything up, and I learned so much from watching these great performers. Having time to grow as a human being was really inspiring, and gave me a lot to pull from. I'm excited about growing: I can just have fun, and the artistic freedom to do whatever I want. At this point, I really know who I am, and don't feel like I have to put myself in a box. I'm not afraid of taking risks - no one can define me.

I loves me some Bey. But the

I loves me some Bey. But the latest song had me floored and NOT in a good way. As far as working with that ole cranky a$$ed man on a movie...EW. I cannot take anything Mr. E makes only because he is a huge republican and talks crap about our commander in chief. Anyway, I have to say any time a singer does a movie about being a singer...it's pretty much no creative stretch. Girl, get your music going and leave these films alone! And why do you always need to reference Adele in your interviews? That chick is so overrated that its not even funny. Just wondering why she never seems to shout out any r & b artists here in the states. And lets not claim to be the reason for YouTube's success.

Well anytime an artist pushes

Well anytime an artist pushes a release of pretty much ANYTHING back it means trouble. I'm not saying that she is in any but it is a bad move. The song is subpar and all over the place and deeming it epic or classic by any means is just plain ole wrong. I've read on other sites and will echo the comment that her new direction/creative sound is similar of Christina Aguilera's Bionic album. It had euro pop producers which unfortunately did NOT go over well. Sorry but everybody just dont get that whole MIA sound. It's whack and maybe a bit over the top. Bey, originality does not mean getting producers that every other artist (US or UK) utilizes because its just recycling. How about doing something soulful and when I say soulful I do mean SOULful. And a not to the wise, Icon NEVER call THEMSELVES iconic. It's annointed from the masses aka us minions that adore you. LOL I'm just sayin....

The negativity towards B

The negativity towards B blows my mind as well. I sometimes wonder how old the individulas posting are and what offerings to society are they making?! Is this what our society esp. as black people come too? The irony of it all, is that we are tearing B apart when she really has done nothing IMO to warrant that, unless some of you know her personally and can tell me a few things I don't know. Publicly her immage in comparison to the average "entertainer" is very clean. Now you don't have agree with her choice of dress or even like her voice but give credit where credit is due. Like those before her she is breaking down barriers even for other current female artists. When Kanye made his statement against MTV the media portrayed Taylor Swift as the victim (which to some degree they were correct because although truthful , it was rude) but what has her "community" done, they supported her and have propelled her to levels of success she probably would have never seen. While we are here with the crabs in the barrell metallity ripping B to shreds for what seems to be personal gratification. How SAD!

How sad r u to be so damn

How sad r u to be so damn naive. WAKE UP PULL THE WOOL FROM OVER YOUR EYES CAPTAIN SAVE A HO. Beyonce is lost because she sold her sold and she is using us as sacrifices. She's already a mental case can't u tell probably not she your idol right???

I absolutely love me some

I absolutely love me some Beyonce. BUT....The only thing in this interview that bothers me is it just sounds so...arrogant.I know she is a confident women and that is great, but saying things like " it inspired a whole movement in R&B", "i'm attracted to songs that will become a dinner converstion", and " Crazy in Love" was another one of those classic moments in pop culture that none of us expected' are all just a bit much. It ok to pat yourself on teh back, but going out of you way and over the top to tell ppl about an accomplishment is too much. It just sounds more humble when someone compliments you and you accept it with a thank you. It's also good to that she is finally acknowledging "her Husband" which i don't know what the big deal was about that and hopefully Jay Z can start acknowldeging her as "his Wife" in his interview.
Hater recognizer's picture

Nothing that she said in the

Nothing that she said in the interview was untrue. She's not a starlett she's a STAR she's been doing this way too long to sit back and act as if this is all by chance, as if this life just fell in her lap. This is what she does... What type of Artist of the MILLENIUM would she or anyone else be to sit there and deny the fact that they've been working for this their entire life, and yes it was hard but I did it and I'm here. Her success is not by coincidence, and I personally feel she'd be ridiculous to act as if it was... She's said it in her music for years, and I love the fact that she's now strong enough to stand up and say to the world "I'm the Shit"

its funny how people are

its funny how people are straight dissing this chick but lets be honest you danced to everyone of her songs from when she was in destiny child to when she became solo. Hate all you want but do you think she cares no. Every artist in the industry copies off each other. Wether its clothes, hair, or videos its the same cliche. Look at rappers they rap about the same shit from one another. All their videos are the same. It doesnt really matter if you hate or love her she is still gonna sell and trust some of you will buy her album and be jamming it or download it. You guys wanna be haters but you cant cus your not even in the same category to be talking. Unless you have millions on top of millions your opinion is worth nothing

PREACH!!! & They're still dancing!!! I had a co-worker tell me that she doesn't like Bey because of the whole illuminate crap and that she can't stand her newer songs...So, I sing and play them at work all the time & guess what... She often joins in!!! Hypocrit! LMAO!!!! She's so sickening to people that they HAVE TO LOVE HER!!! I've always LOVED HER, even in the video with Wyclef "No no no no NO... Boy I know you want me I can see it in your eyes..."

Although I do not like the "girls run the world" song, I do love Beyonce bc there is simply no reason to hate her. im almost certain that there will be songs on her album that I do enjoy. I am 25 years old and alot of women in my age group have simply grown WITH Beyonce. Its nice to see her growth. Even in this interview she seems more open, more sure of herself. Thats beautiful.

i have never been able to

i have never been able to understand or comprehend where all of the Beyonce hate comes from - she is a talented artist period. She can sing. That is what she is supposed to do. Now - love her or hate her I do know this - She made upwards of $90 million last time out (yes that's ninety million) so- haters hate on - she can buy all of ya'll and make change 10 times over. She earns what you will make over the course of your entire life in a day. I highly doubt she gives a damn what anyone who doesn't like her thinks - because for every 1 person that talks *ish about her on a blog - there are millions all over the world buying her music, clothes, perfume, seeing her shows, etc. She's laughing all the way to the bank. And so is her husband.

She might want to rethink

She might want to rethink this "managing herself thing" because it's starting off kind of bad. This Run the World song is a mess (even Kelly and JLo are beating her in the charts) and the video was supposed to be released 2 weeks ago but apparently, it's not done yet, hence all of the trailers to keep people reminded. Not to mention the $100 million lawsuit against her that her father even said she was wrong. Bey needs to put the bottle down and start focusing before this becomes the end of her career.

Tasha what is wrong with your readers. They are MAD HATERS. Yes I said it haters. Whatever this woman does you guys hate it! I mean seriously ppl are always complaining about how theres no real talent out (even though there is, explore your options) blah blah blah, and here's Beyonce one of the most talented performers of our time and all you have to say is how she's lying about her age and shit?? I mean seriously, just because she doesn't pour out her heart in an interview doesn't mean she's being fake. And she is 29 she does not have to have children if doesn't want to! Let Beyonce enjoy her life and stop scrutinizing everything she does. Of course she isn't the best "artist" but she's a great singer and dancer and that TRULY should be what matters. And "Girls" is actually a cool song to listen to. I promise just listen to it. NOT a stan, just a woman who has some sense.
