DO WE LOVE IT?: Beyonce's Bonus Track "Schoolin' Life"

On Beyonce's deluxe edition of her upcoming album 4, she adds on 3 additional tracks.  The first one to just hit the net is called "Schoolin' Life" and she's going the Prince route with it.  Check it under the cut....

Beyonce sang over an 80's inspired beat for another track written by The Dream.  The "1+1" song she performed on "American Idol" also channeled a bit of Prince, and she's doing it again on "Schoolin' Life."  And she's talking about still excelling in a world where parents try to shield everything.

"Mom and dad tried to hide the world/Said the world's just too big for a little girl/Eyes wide open can't you see/I had my first heels by the age of 13..."

The other two bonus tracks are called "Dance For U" and "Lay Up Under Me."  Her 4 Deluxe Edition will be released exclusively at Target the same day as her regular album, June 28th.

This album is not marketed to

This album is not marketed to the club hopping 20-28 year old caucasian girls, the legion of gay fans, 12-20 year old high school kids. This is an album for the alternative ear. Those who listen to Kings of Leon, Maroon 5, Bearbrown, Adele..etc. This is an alternative album. She didn't go the traditional radio friendly route. So, it's okay for radio listeners to second guess Beyonce this time around. She will do just fine. She has secured her fan base. Those who are fickle were never fans. Like Mary, Mariah, Whitney, Madonna, etc. She has her fan base & they have theirs. If you never hear a Beyonce song on the radio again, her fans will know when the album release date is.

I listen to Kings of Leon,

I listen to Kings of Leon, Maroon 5, and Adele. Those groups are highly successful and get lots of radio play. This is not like their material. Beyonce's CD is plain old mayhem. She tried something different and I credit for that. It just isn't working.

If you are honestly familiar

If you are honestly familiar with those artist & groups I mentioned, you would know none of their music are similar, either. The entire post was to say she brought out alternative music. Alternative is not a genre but a description.

As an avid Adele and Kings of

As an avid Adele and Kings of Leon fan i'm dissapointed that you even compare this Album to any of their EPIC albums. Really? I know all her fans are trying to justify this album but the only thing that was remotely alternative was run the world and that was an epic fail. Everything else i've heard so far from this album is typical Beyonce. And no i am not a hater I actually have one or two Beyonce albums i just would not be buying this one as it doesn't cut it for me. Go listen to Kings of Leons's only by night Adele's 21 ,science and faith by the script or even Florence+the machine. Those are well thought out albums for the "alternative ear". If you like what you've heard from this album go purchase it but that "alternative ear " excuse just doesn't cut it.

I can't believe I am about to

I can't believe I am about to argue this; Alternative is not a genre, you do know? Also, because of delivery, does not make someone more substantial than the other. If you are only familiar with one's mainstream success, please do not speak. Lyrically genius "Diamonds used to be coal. Look young because they got sold, that's why you're beautiful" "Head down, as I watch my feet take turns hitting the ground. Eyes shut, I find myself in love racing the earth. I'm absorbing your love, love was right in my path in my grasp, and me & you belong." No song is going to be an encyclopedia. Like another poster said "let's not be fooled by delivery that Adele is some musical genius or Kings of Leon. If Beyonce were to strip her music down, she too would be considered a lyrical genius of their caliber. Good day!

Before people. like you

Before people. like you caught onto Adele's commercial success, I was listening to Kings Of Leon, Adele, Florence & The Machines, etc. I didn't say they were singing the same material, but let's not pretend that Adele is some type of lyrically genius. Their sounds are alternative. Till the end of time=He won't Go, Tears of mine, etc.. I am a huge underground rock, alternative, country, pop, rock, music in general fan. So, please don't tell me to go listen to an album I have owned long before they became world phenomenons. Just as Beyonce & Destiny's Child. Prior to mainstream success I was purchasing albums.

I agree with your comment

I agree with your comment 110%. I love Adele's music and this is no where near Adele type of music, so please don't put her and Beyonce in the same category. Adele's lyrics has substance, and as much as I respect Bey, her lyrics always lack substance it just always has an ok beat.

This is a totally unbiased,

This is a totally unbiased, impersonal opinion so please don't bite my head off. I believe Beyonce has a lot of talent that is untapped. Many of the reinventions we experience in her music is the production of the music and the style itself. However, it seems that Beyonce rarely taps the surface of her own talent. I believe that Beyonce hasn't quite hit a place where her and her music are one. It feels commercial and not authentic. There are some classics that are classics because the artist believed in their song and had passion for what they were singing. Examples include "Respect" by Aretha Franklin, "In A Sentimental Mood" covered by Phyllis Hyman, "American Woman" by Jimi Hendrixx, "Stormy Weather" by Lena Horne... I would just love to see Beyonce reinvent HERSELF rather than just the style of music she voices over. Again, I believe she is EXTREMELY talented by it seems she missing that element where artist and song become one. Where she has a passion for what she is singing. It comes across in her music and interviews that she is more focused on becoming an icon than making insanely lasting, good music that will naturally become iconic. I'd love to see her go a few clicks deeper and create something truly prodigious. To challenge herself beyond the accolades, past the image and surpass even her highest expectations of herself. I don't know, maybe my expectations are just too high for artists today. ***sigh, shrugging shoulders***
Suhaillah's picture

I have to say I agree and I

I have to say I agree and I am a Stan. She is not one with her music. Like on the last track on the album, she's trying to be really deep and I'm just not feeling it.

People won't understand

People won't understand Beyonce the artist if they're only familiar with her radio releases. I can attest; Yes, Signs, Dangerously in Love, Resentment, Smash into you, Hello, Broken Hearted Girl, Ava Maria, Satellites, That's why you're Beautiful, Why Don't you love me, Love on Top, I Care, I was Here, Save The hero...etc. have all been classically arranged & lyrically genius. If you already built stereotypes around an artist, nothing he/she delivers will impress you. That's just the truth.
Anonymous's picture

I agree with this too. So

I agree with this too. So true. I haven't been so open with "I was here" yet.
Anonymous's picture

this actually made me laugh.

this actually made me laugh. clasically arranged and musically genius? 1. go thank the songwriters for that. 2. i didn't know signs was lyrically genius. i guess listing all the start signs is now a genius move. 3. Ave maria is a cover. Celine Dion has a version of that too. 4. Smash into you another stolen song. Go listen to the original on youtube. No reflection on this "artist" 5. she practically repeated the same lines over and over again in why don't you love me. cute video tho so clasically arranged and musically genius? lmao

So glad Bey said f*ck ya with

So glad Bey said f*ck ya with this album. Black ppl really think their mentality and preference is what black ppl should be aspiring to. You ppl need to SUPPORT and ENCOURAGE your own (yourself!!!). And yes I said "you ppl". Your mentality is wack, real tack. DID YOU EVEN LISTEN TO THE LYRICS? F*ck them, Bey, I hear you. and I love the one w/Kanye and Andre 3000. Be encouraged. The children are the future, and their minds are in your hands, so keep schoolin'em through your music. Haters haven't done half of what you've done with your life. They have no idea what it's like to be talented and have giraffe money to show for it. They have no idea what its like to be you, period. If they were in your position they'd blow it miserably and be the crap they're calling you -- because it's universal law for ppl to experience their own judgments. They really think they can do you better than you, and be as successful as you have with it, they can't even do themselves....lol.... and for how many years have you been doing this, and killin it? They don't know how to give props where they're due. I see you and I'm so happy for you. They can't even imagine........Please don't listen to them. Keep listening to your heart. You've done so much more than many will ever, especially the haters.

You on here PREACHING this

You on here PREACHING this thing! My least favorite thing is how unnecessarily critical regular everyday people are of those of us who are out here DOING it. The NERVE of anyone who's never had the responsibility on their shoulders like she does, who's never bared their soul like she has, who's not in front of billions of critics daily to say what she is or is not doing right. King Bey's KILLING it and they can't STAND IT! Keep shining, Bey - you're a hard worker and every blessing you receive is much deserved!

Did you just hear yourself

Did you just hear yourself when you said that our children's minds is in Beyonce's hands? Really though? So our future will be filled with uneducated, sex crazed people? Kill me now.
Anonymous's picture

No, kill yourself. No

No, kill yourself. No freebies over here. In life you have to go hard or go home. If you don't think Bey influences the minds of her fans and that her fans are many/the future, and that she has conducted herself and her career and her life in a manner worth aspiring to, then I don't know what to tell you. It could be a lot worse. You could have young girls wanting to be talentless whores. And why do think she's uneducated? She didn't hit the lottery or inherit her wealth, she worked for it and hard too. She gives 11O% in everything she does. That's what ppl/the youth are diggin about her. It's an art, craft, BUSINESS. smh
