ARRESTED: Raheem Devaughn & Dr. Cornel West JAILED For Supporting OccupyDC

Singer Raheem Devaughn and Dr. Cornel West were arrested yesterday for participating in an OccupyDC protest on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court.  Deets inside....

Shortly after attending the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial yesterday, Dr. Cornel West was arrested along with singer Raheem Devaughn and over a dozen OccupyDC protesters on the steps of the Supreme Court around 6pm, a rep for Raheem tells TheYBF.com.

The demonstration was one of many taking place around the world to protest against corporate influence in politics and the effects on the economy.

As the movement gains traction, protests in New York have drawn celebs like Kanye West and Russell Simmons into the fold.

Shortly after his arrest, Raheem's staff posted this message on Twitter,

Raheem is in jail for protesting along side Dr. Cornel West downtown. We expect him to get out soon. -Dave (staff)

Meanwhile, sources close to Dr. West posted a similar message on his Twitter saying,

Thanks ALL for your concern. Dr. West is ok. He'll share his thoughts from today very soon. Stay tuned! -- Bro.

The arrested individuals were charged with trespassing and are expected to be released soon.  We will keep you posted.

We Canadians did start this

We Canadians did start this but we are not free until the Queen has no power over us. The Queen has power over Canada if she doesn't like what we want she will say no. We have to go back to the drawing board until we have a law she agrees with. It is time for us the people to wake up the wealthy elites control everything in our world that has to do with why Haiti and Africa are doing worst off every day.

Where was #occupywallstreet & co.? Now that the economy is slowing recovering this is when they had the guts to protest about capitalism and corporate greed.

"the banks are too big to fail", do you remember that?!! and why do you think he gave our ALL of our money to the hated wallstreet....well let me spell it out for you -- your beloved obama sits atop the list of "purchased" politicians. who do you think funded his campaign? who do you think his biggest donors are?! lmbo. y'all are comical. black america so far up his a$$ you can't see for all his chit. keep on giving him that free pass and not holding him accountable for anything. things will continue to fall apart in this country and since WE are at the bottom of the totem pole WE will CONTINUE to suffer the most. you guys are soooooooooo grateful that we finally have a BLACK president that you see NOTHING else. keep on protesting, let's see how many jobs that creates.

(get it?) this anger is misplaced and misguided. but because the sitting president is a black man, you march all around the town except where his tent is set up. let me explain something to you slow fools, businesses create jobs. corporations create jobs. people create jobs. the government has NEVER created jobs enough to stimulate, sustain, or grow an economy. your president has policies that kills jobs. his policies are hostile to EVERYTHING that makes a capitalistic society works. and while he's giving you idiots rhetoric that makes you feel like having an org@zm, his policies are causing businesses and corporations to shut more doors and ship more jobs overseas. but you keep on feeling good about his words. you keep on protesting down at wallstreet. and you keep on screaming at me. but while you're at it, remember, i HAVE a job, and i'm starting my own business. because self reliant people KNOW that one day "the job" will be gone, and the only thing you will have left is what you have built.

Wall st. actually does buy congressman through this thing called LOBBYING....have you heard of lobbyists? Maybe before you make an ignorant comment, do your homework
Anonymous's picture

have i heard of

have i heard of lobbyists? have you heard of subject/verb agreement? before you step to me learn to speak properly or you are automatically dismissed. but since i have a few minutes of free time on my hands........ the statement you were TRYING to make is only 60% correct. POLITICIANS are bought and paid for by lobbyists, NOT congress....POLITICIANS my friend. but i know, i know, it is now the in thing to say "congress" because that's what the president has been feeding you. and you're so naive, you believe every word he says and run with it. who do you think president obama's donors are? where do you think he got the money to fund his campaign? where do you think his money comes from, the tooth fairy?!!! no sweetheart, it came from wallstreet, big banks....and oh my God, RICH FOLKS. the very same rich folks he's now telling you to hate. the very same rich he's now telling you is the cause of all our woes. the gullible will always suffer. why the hell do you think he was so quick to bail them out and give them our hard earned money? ALL politicians and bought, ALL OF THEM....democrats, republicans, independents...ALL OF THEM. so until you understand that premise, it would behoove you to go get the rest of your buddies down there at wall street and start protesting in front of the homes of ALL politicians. i suggest you start at 1600 penn ave. and just in case you're wondering -- that would be the white house.
EACH1TEAH1's picture

Each1, I agree with what you

Each1, I agree with what you are saying except the fact that all politicians are bought. There is only 1 and that is Dr. Ron Paul, Republican Presidential Candidate. He is the only 1 that has not been bought and he is also called Dr. No on the hill because that is what he votes when any law contradicts the Constitution and what he tells the lobbyists. To check on the donors for candidates, check opensecrets.org. Then everyone here will see that Obama is bought by the banks and him and McCain received $$$ from the banks in 2008. Dr. Paul ran for the 2008 election and is running now. The curious thing is that you rarely hear his name in the press. The Federal Reserve (private corp.), who runs the USA, despises him. Dr. Ron Paul has been requesting an audit of the Federal Reserve for the past 30 years. He wants to know where our gold is. He wants to eliminate the Federal Reserve, IRS, the wars (always votes against them since they are unconstitutional), legalize drugs, release non-violent drug offenders and return our liberty to us. He is libertarian and our masters don't want you to hear him speak because when you do, the blinders will fall off. The Federal Reserve is our enemy and has enslaved us with the money they print out of thin air. Ask yourself, if we are truly free, then why won't the media allow Dr. Paul more air time? He wins lots of straw polls and if you read the articles, they rarely mention his name. Vote for the person the media does not want - that is the person against the establishment. Dr. Ron Paul, President, 2012

So, is the constitution no

So, is the constitution no longer relevant in America? Freedom of Assembly. Last time I checked, the supreme court belonged to "The United States of America", therefore, the people have a right to assemble at the Supreme court. These quacks wouldn't care if "white" citizens assembled to cheer on the execution of a black man. You call them on their bullshit, and their all up in arms. Why so hostile, guilty? Also, I make a very nice sum of income, but I am no where near as wealthy as I could be if corporations, churches, etc. paid their fair share of taxes. Barack can start with GE & GM!

I appreciate and understand

I appreciate and understand the Occupy Wall Street movement: but at the same time I don't see what its 'changing', for the better. I also appreciate the celebs who want to take part. Its courageous of them to do so: but they are putting their safety at risk. I hope that Dr. West and Raheem DeVaughn aren't/weren't being mistreated by the police; and I hope that Dr. West is using the time to re-evaluate his anti-Obama rhetoric because not every problem we face today is Obama's fault, nor can he fix them with a snap of his fingers. Corporate greed has been years, decades in the making and many-a-millionaire-fat-cat will fight tooth & nail to keep things just the way they are. Selfishness & greed are running rampant and its a damn disgrace.

i really agree with you on this (excuse me if i dont use periods or commons :) i believe that people really think that obama is suppose to fix everything asap it took bush 8 years to really mess things up give him time it not about being black or white rich or poor its about doing whats right nothing worth having and doing comes easy instead of every time obama farts writing about it lets try to help each other we will never be the land of the free if we dont come together as a people im soooo happy about what mr west and raheem did and other people as well thats fighting for the cause theirs no way in the world that usa is rich but yet we have people out here homeless jobless hungry scared etc and banks wall street etc is living well off with not a care in the world as long as they get paid its sad its very sad

Occupy Wall Streets Goal is

Occupy Wall Streets Goal is to apply pressure on the government to come up with innovative ideas to fix the economy. Stop stalling on passing policies, and to offer assistance to those in need. Sidenote: As much as you want to exclude Obama, her is the Chief of the United States. It is his goal to bring the house to one accord, it is his duty to offer innovative ways to fi the economy, aside from continuous spending on infrastructure. That is a temporary fix to this economy. Yes it takes a team, but we chose Obama because he was supposed to be a leader & mediator. He is none of those. When Bush wanted to push for the war( as idiotic as it was) he had most politicians on one accord) and it's not just based on color. I am black & go through the same obstacles in my profession. I am able to overcome.

I know what the goals of

I know what the goals of Occupy Wall Street are and as I said, I respect the protest and its meaning; but I dont see how it is creating the kind of (corporate/economic) change that we ALL want to see. And I am not 'excusing' Obama, but I am definitely minimizing his role as 'villain' in all of this. Yes he is the president and all of these problems are ultimately his to handle: but no man is an island. He needs to support of Congress and the Senate; all of whom are elected by us and so on. It will take less selfishness on the parts of ALL businesses, their leaders, and consumers to get a more farily balanced economy and to create more jobs. Bush had the support of people of all races and parties for the war because #1-9/11 has just happened and we were all on board for a fight against terrorism, #2-he LIED and said there were WMDs armed and ready to harm us, and #3-a great many of Bush's influencial friends profited from the war because they invested in, and owned many of the companies that supplied weapons and goods to our military. I too am black and am fortunate to have overcome alot of these issues. I am gainfully employed and make a good salary. But I am not arrogant enough to think that these issues don't affect me/can't affect me tomorrow. There-but-for-the-grace-of-God-go-I. But if I dont save money & budget accordingly, knowing how bad the economy is, it is my fault. Not Obama's.

While I agree that the

While I agree that the original grievances of the Occupy movement has merit (although some people protesting cannot articulate why they are part of the crowd), freedom of speech and assembly does NOT mean that protesters are exempt from following the law (trespassing/staying overnight in a private park and not leaving when asked, keeping working people from getting to their jobs, etc.). I'm all for standing up for what you believe in, but there is a right and wrong way to do it. There is a small minority going about it the wrong way, and it makes the whole movement seem shady/disorganized.
