I am torn, I truly didn't

I am torn, I truly didn't care for the movie the Help, nor did I feel that Viola was exceptional. Octavia stole the show. Despite my reservations, knowing our struggle as a people, in many ways the movie pays homage to my grandmother (yes, she was a maid for white folks) and other black women who did what they had to do. Congrats ladies...you have come along way!

Some of the same people on

Some of the same people on here acting all philosophical and politically correct are some of the very same individuals who support rappers, singers, and other entertainers who produce FAR LESS than what these two women have worked hard to accomplish. You, who bob your heads, two-step, and shake your asses to profane, sexually-laced lyrics, have NO ARGUMENT HERE. CONGRATS, LADIES!

I don't remember Halle Berry

I don't remember Halle Berry getting all this negativity when she won best actress for fu$&ing the $hit out of a white man in Monsters Ball. Yeah, your right...Hollywood type cast most African Americans but..if I'm an actress...what am I suppose to do? Stop acting...hell naw. Ima work hard and make you remember the maid I played.

I don't support the roles in

I don't support the roles in THE HELP not because it's a maid's role. We are ALL aware of the History of African Americans. Yes, many African Americans were slaves, maids, etc. And I also know that Viola Davis rendered a great performance. The issue is HOLLYWOOD. Hollywood keep regenerating and rewarding the SAME PERFORMANCES (maids, druggies, etc) from African Americans. You keep seeing the same roles there is no diversity in terms of the roles. And I agree with people who say that there is nothing special about the performances because we are all so familiar with the emotions because it's been told so often. People like Meryl Streep get offered all types of roles. And if you look at the roles she has been allowed to play over the years you see such a diversity. But with Africans Americans there is not that same confidence from Hollywood that we can tell ANY story. When Hollywood can right the injustices they show so often in movies like the HELP by allowing African Americans the opportunity to play different roles then I will get excited when those performances WIN!

I agree with you in one way,

I agree with you in one way, but disagree with you in another. Yes I would like to see our brothers and sisters in the entertainment industry play a much wider variety of roles like Will Smith, Wesley Snipes, Denzel Washington for instance, but at the same time we can't ignore the fact that we have a a history of oppression, slavery and being maids that is simply filled with interesting stories. I thought The Help was a good story. Are you saying that it wasn't a good story simply because it was about maids? Are you saying the sister did not do a good acting job because she was portraying a maid? If so I disgree. There is a movie about Nat Turner's slave revolt called Nat Turner Unchained that is being cast right now. http://www.NatTurnerUnchained.com I am excited to see that... finally. But are you saying you would not support a film about Nat Turner simply because every black role by necessity would be the role of a black slave? That's where I disagree. Your occupation or class status is not what makes you who you are as our ancestors have shown time and time again. It's about how you play those cards, how courageous you are. You have to look at each movie individually for what it is. I'd much rather watch The Help than watch Soul Plane.

I also agree!

I also agree!

You got it exactly right

You got it exactly right Furious. I completely agree with you.
Anonymous's picture

Really don't care if YOU

Really don't care if YOU don't support them.. I rather them play maids than be a maids. You don't understand our history. The only job my grandmother could get was a MAID. Have a seat. _/ Plus you support a screeching drug out whore Rhiant!!!! OMG you are not Black wonder why you chase up Rhi coochie!!!
Anonymous's picture

I think we can all agree that

I think we can all agree that we had grandmothers and other family members that were maids. The problem is that these are only stories that are told in Hollywood. But we as blacks get all caught up and emotional because of the memories of our older generations that we allow Hollywood to just keep casting us in the same damn roles over and over again. Then we sit there supporting these white people basically telling you that we are only good enough to play certain roles in Hollywood because it reminds us of our past. Well guess what, we were more than just maids and cooks. But we never see that in movies, yet black people continue to act like giving us these same damn roles with the same damn type of "Ahhs so po but ahhs still has mahs pride" movies. I'm sick of it. WAKE UP
Anonymous's picture

You obviously need to WAKE

You obviously need to WAKE UP. Movies get made when there are people to write and finance them. A big production also needs marketing and an audience. If black writers and producers aren't creating these types of films, then they will never get made. These women are brought dignity and a voice to a piece of American history that goes largely ignored by white Americans and hidden by black Americans. The roles that black Americans played in the history of this country need to be explored from every angle. Yes. It is painful, and often seems stereotypical, but it has to be told. It amazes me that people criticize this, yet will support Lil Kim, Nicki Minaj, Jay Z, Kanye, Snoop Dogg and other forms ignorant and mistrel "artistry" where you own people are calling you a nig---, h----, or a b----. Makes no sense. WAKE UP!!

Viola looks beautiful and

Viola looks beautiful and radiant. To all the haters and negative miserable trolls on here, go screw yourselves. Congratulatios to her and to Octavia.
Who The, What The?'s picture

Viola looks stunning. Don't

Viola looks stunning. Don't understand all the negativity surrounding her looks. It's just not fair; she's not the stereotypical Hollywood type, but she's working what she has and I think that's what's important here. Not whether her dress and hair are THE most perfect choices. Regarding Emma Stone, the bland white center of this oreo cookie, she looks extremely uncomfortable. I think it's because she's not getting the attention she's used to -- the black women are getting the accolades for this film. Her physical body language is a sign of her inner turmoil with having the cede recognition and kudos to these two extraordinary women (Viola and Octavia) who happen to be black, bold and beautiful.
Just My Two Cents's picture

I would love it if both

I would love it if both ladies swept the Oscars. I am not ashamed of leading black actresses playing maids in time period pieces. Both my grand mothers were maids at some point in their lives because they didn't have many "career" choices in the deep the South. It is critical for us to tell our own stories. I've had high school kids and a few grown people tell me they had no idea blacks were treated so unfairly. The Jews make 50 Holocaust every year because they understand the importance of telling the story of their struggles. I don't understand why we are so ashamed. Our ancestors went through terrible hardship to make it possible for us today. We should look back on their lives with respect and preserve their memories.
chaka1's picture

I don't think that dress

I don't think that dress Viola has on is a good choice. I don't like the contrast of color and I also don't like the fit. Viola also has hair issues with this horrible wigs she selects. I like that comparison of a OREO COOKIE because that is all I see when I view this dress. I think Viola is a good actress but I don't see her range. She seems to play similar characters. I still think Hollywood needs to come up with better roles. I'm just not interested in seeing The Help. I did read the book but I don't have any interest in the film.
Furious Styles's picture

When I looked at the three of

When I looked at the three of them, my first thought was......1) this pic reminds me of a human oreo cookie and 2), what does that white woman's body language say? That being said, Viola and Octavia look great! I did not like the book nor the movie (only went to the movie because my two Aunts, having been maids, wanted me to treat them to the movie...LOL.. so I did), but congratulations to Viola for her accomplishment.

Congrats to Octavia Spencer

Congrats to Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis...but it is BITTERSWEET!!! Just 73 years ago when Hattie McDaniel was nominated and won an Oscar for protraying a housemaid. I believe that we are STILL being accepted in society ONLY in a certain CONSISTENT protrayal which is NOT COOL. JUST WAIT until next year (2013)... When we get nominations for Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" which is about the revenge of an African-American slave on his Caucasian former master. Our history is BEING written by Caucasian writers. (NO OFFENSE) African-American writers STAND UP!!! Once again...nominations for being an escaped prisoner, poverty-stricken, housemaid, abusive/drug addict, crooked police cops, pimps, drug dealers, vixens, showgirl/prostitute, obese, althetic, illiterate, gangsters, and sidekicks. Even though there are great previous Academy Award nominations but there is a NEED for more diversity. Overall, if you do not feel respected in society no matter what race or gender, do your research and do NOT buy the product because it is WRONG. **Above is my same post on another article. : )

While everybody else is

While everybody else is watching Django Unchained I'll be watching Nat Turner Unchained about the Nat Turner Slave revolt of 1831 where at least 55 whites were massacre by General Nat http://www.NatTurnerUnchained.com. I already read the script for Django Unchained and I think a lot of people are going to be blown away by the content when it shows up on the big screen. You are probably right. they will give out academy awards for the fictional slavery story while other true stories about black history do not get recognized.
